  • Archlinux/atheros WLAN configuration troubles

    - by GrinReaper
I'm trying to config archlinux to use my wireless network adapter. It's quite troublesome. From what I've gathered, it's an atheros network adapter, using the ath5k driver/module... I can't get it to work; any ideas? Here's some of the output from my tinkering: # lspci | grep -i net 00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia corporation MCP67 Ethernet (reva2) 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: atheros communications inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev01) # lsusb ... AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev01) ... Kernel driver in use: ath5k Kernel modules: ath5k # dmesg |grep ath5k registered as phy0 registered led device ath5k: atheros chip found PCI INT A disabled registered led device registered as phy1 # ip addr | sed '/^[0-9]/!d;s/: <.*$//' 1: lo 2: eth1 3: eth0 # ip link set <interface> up/down RNETLINK answers: Operation not possible due to RF-kill Also, is there a way to dump text from command-line to a text file so i can just copy pasta? Sorry, first time using a linux distro... EDIT: So I just tried this: I actually just did this twice. (I can't tell which setting is on/off for my wireless adapter. The lights are blue all the time now.) #rfkill list 0: hp-wifi: wireless lan softblocked: no hardblocked :yes 1: hp-bluetooth: bluetooth softblocked: no hardblocked :yes 3: phy1: wireless lan softblocked: no hardblocked :yes #rfkill list 0: hp-wifi: wireless lan softblocked: no hardblocked :no 1: hp-bluetooth: bluetooth softblocked: no hardblocked no 3: phy1: wireless lan softblocked: no hardblocked :yes 7: hci0: bluetooh 0: hp-wifi: wireless lan softblocked: no hardblocked :no I've dug around some other articles and it seems like ath5k is supposed to be preferable to madwifi, so should i be using madwifi? I'm 99% sure I disabled the hardblock (by turning it ON) but, as shown above, phy1 wireless lan is STILL hardblocked. What gives? Maybe I've made some more fundamental error in a basic config file? EDIT: I've fixed the hardblock. I've tried pinging www.google.com, but to no avail. I get: ping: unknown host www.google.com In the arch wiki: Edit /etc/hosts and add the same HOSTNAME you entered in /etc/rc.conf: 127.0.0.1 archlinux.domain.org localhost.localdomain localhost archlinux To my understanding, hostname is just a user-specified and based on preference(?) My /etc/rc.conf: HOSTNAME="gestalt" My /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost gestalt but should it be the following? 120.0.0.1 localhost.domain.org localhost.localdomain localhost gestalt

  • No internet connection using Edimax routers

    - by idan315
I have two computers connected to a router, connected to my ADSL modem by PPPoE. One of those computrs use Windows XP, the other uses Windows 7. The computer using Windows 7 keeps getting limited or no connectivity, and I can't use it to connect to the internet. Connecting the computer to the modem without the router 'in the way' worked, and I was able to use the internet - which led me to believe that the problem is with my router. However, I have changed my router, and the problem persists. I am really lost on how to approach this problem. Possible leads: when I view the network information, I see that my computer is connected to 'Multiple Networks'. One of those is "Network 4" (probably my router), and the other is Unidentified network. I don't know how to make the "Unidentified Network" disappear, or why is it even there in the first place. When I try using "ipconfig", I have two default gateway IPs. The first is 0.0.0.0, and the second is the IP of my router (192.168.2.1). The first router was Edimax BR-6204Wg. The second one I've tried connecting is BR-6424n. Any ideas?

  • Why is my Network Connections list empty?

    - by DealerNextDoor
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but none of the links I have found have worked. I've been trying to find fixes for the past couple of weeks. This all started a few days after I got my router. At first, I thought it was just something that would fix it self. But as usual, it never does. I am trying to update my router's wireless card to try and fix this problem, but I need to get the card's information to update it on the HP website. And since my Network Connections list is empty, I can't get any information about it. So to get around this, I tried to go to 'Manage Wireless Networks', and when I tried to get the properties from there, I get this error: Windows has encounter an error saving the wireless profile. Specific Error: The data is invalid. So, what all can I do to try and fix this? Any help will be appreciated. EDIT: Sorry, forgot to put router info. Router Model: WNR1000v2-V2 Router Maker: NETGEAR Router Firmware Version: V1.0.0.12NA The router is up-to-date on all updates.

  • Programmer configuring a new network

    - by David Lively
I'm in the process of expanding my home network from a couple of laptops on a wireless Verizon FiOS router to include: Linksys 24-port switch Cisco Pix 515 Cisco 3640 router One new development desktop and three new machines to act as a db server, web server and a backup system. My company is moving offices and we've decommissioned some older hardware, which I was able to pick up for the cost of the labor to move it home from the office. The benefits to working with dedicated web and db servers are very valuable to me. I know very little about network topology, other than that everything plugs into the switch, which then plugs into the cheap Verizon router. (Verizon provides a coax connection that the router must translate into Ethernet before I can use it with any of this equipment). Questions: What is the recommended topology for this equipment? Verizon router - Pix - 3600 - switch? Is the 3600 even necessary or desirable? The Verizon router has one WAN port and 4 client ports, all 10/100. Is there any performance benefit at all to wiring multiple connections from the verizon router to the switch, assuming I don't use the Pix? Should I use the Pix? Software firewalls are a pain, and seem silly if I have a device like this lying around. Anything else I should know? Am I wasting my time with this? I also obtained a 7 foot rack, shelves, patch panels, UPS, patch panels, etc, which are going into a conveniently air conditioned closet. All constructive advice appreciated.

  • SSH not working through Double NAT

    - by d_inevitable
I am trying to setup port forwarding for ssh through 2 NATs The first Router translates my internet IP to my outer network (10.1.7.0). In the outer network there's a second Router that does NAT to my inner network (192.168.1.0). The target server is connected to both, the outer network and the inner network. I cannot change the port forwarding options for outer router. It is currently configured to forward the SSH and HTTP port to the router for the inner network. Internet + | v +-----------------+ +------------------+ | Outer Router | | Inner Router | |-----------------| |------------------| | | SSH HTTP | | +----+ +--------------------->| | | | | | | | | | | | | +-------+---------+ +------+---------+-+ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +------------------+ | SSH | | | | Server | | | | | |------------------| | | | +-----------> |<-------+ | | | | |HTTP (testing) | +------------------+ | | | +------v------------------+ | | Outer Workstation | +-------------------+ | |-------------------------| | Inner Workstation| | | | |-------------------| | | | | |<----------------+ +-------------------------+ | | +-------------------+ When connecting from a outer workstation to the address of the inner router, then both SSH and HTTP work fine. When connecting from the internet to my public ip with HTTP, the connection works fine as well. However SSH just times out. Most likely because the reply is not routed back properly. I suspect its either because of the SSH itself, or because the server is connected to both, the inner and outer network. Any ideas how I could resolve this issue? The routes on the server are currently: ip route show default via 10.1.7.254 dev eth0 metric 100 10.1.7.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.1.7.1 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.2 Do I have to change this? If so how?

  • Cannot find wireless driver for HP laptop

    - by rodey
I have an HP laptop (model: dv7-1267cl, Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium) and I cannot find the wireless driver for the laptop. I am need of a different version because my wireless connection under Windows is flaky and unreliable. I have problems printing to my wireless printer and logging in to and using several sites like reddit.com, phoenix.edu and facebook.com - I get several "page cannot be displayed" messages while using my wireless connection. I disable my wireless adapter and use an ethernet cable and it all works fine. I also used an Ubuntu Live CD to confirm that there is not a problem with the hardware. This is software/driver issue. The drivers were auto installed by the OS. The Device Manager shows the wireless adapter as Atheros AR5009 802.11 a/g/n WiFi Adapter. I have checked the HP website for my laptop and they do not have wireless drivers listed for that model wireless adapter. I have also checked with atheros.com and I do not see my model adapter on their list of available hardware. Device Manager lists the Hardware ID's for my adapter as: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_1381103C&REV_01 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_1381103C PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_028000 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_0280 A search for the first Hardware ID turned up this question from experts-exchange.com. tl;dr A driver does not exist for that model adapter.

  • How to Turn Your Ubuntu Laptop into a Wireless Access Point

    - by Chris Hoffman
If you have a single wired Internet connection – say, in a hotel room – you can create an ad-hoc wireless network with Ubuntu and share the Internet connection among multiple devices. Ubuntu includes an easy, graphical setup tool. Unfortunately, there are some limitations. Some devices may not support ad-hoc wireless networks and Ubuntu can only create wireless hotspots with weak WEP encryption, not strong WPA encryption. • Broadcom STA wireless driver frezees

    - by Srki
Upon updating my 10.10 netbook to 11.04 on the first startup it froze. I checked the forums and found that disabling wlan in BIOS fixes the problem so I did that and it worked, system was ok and it didn't freeze but then I had no wireless. I know that Broadcom STA driver is to blame cause I removed it from "additional drivers" and enabled back in bios wlan and everything worked fine (exept no wireless cause no driver is activated). Enabling Broadcom STA in the additional drivers again and restarting wireless was up and it found my network and connected to it but in a matter of seconds netbook froze. Can you please help me...

  • Can you explain how to understand what the 'iwconfig' command displays in Ubuntu-9.04?

When I try associating a key using sudo iwconfig wlan0 key s:my_key I get the following error message: Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. I do have the right key though, so what's the problem?

  • Why does NetworkManager take so long to connect to the wireless network?

    - by spoulson
I have a Dell Mini9 that came with Ubuntu 8.10. Out of the box, Wifi configuration was done under System settings - Network and worked straightforward. Then, after some update patches, NetworkManager was installed to replace this functionality. Initially, it did not carry over my settings and I had to figure out how to redo it. After lots of bumbling with it, it finally works. However, after bootup the NetworkManager icon waits about 2 minutes before even attempting to connect to the wireless network. Then, about a minute later, it connects and I'm on my way. The Mini9 boots up within 30 seconds from SSD, so opening Firefox and then waiting 3+ min for wireless networking is a bit of a pain. Can anything be done?

  • Connect wired-only devices to a remote wireless access point?

    - by billpg
Hi everyone. In building A, I have a Netgear wireless access point using WPA2. Works great, no problems. In building B, I have some devices that only have wired Ethernet ports. They can't see my access point. What I need is a gizmo that connects over-the-air to my access point in building A, talks WPA2, and converts the packets to and from a wired Ethernet port. Netgear-access-point in building A      (WPA2 WiFi) Wireless bridge device          <-- Looking for this.      (Cat5 ethernet) My devices in building B. I've looked for devices on Amazon, but the descriptions are infuriatingly unclear. It says it supports WPA2, but does it support it as a client? Grrr... Any recommendations please?

  • Is there a way to turn off the sound that plays when my computer reconnects to the wireless network?

    - by Dan Tao
I know this seems silly. Obviously I could mute my computer, or turn the speakers off. But it seems like surely there should be a way that I can keep all of my normal computer sounds without having to hear this one sound (no, it doesn't really bother me; mostly my wife just wants me to turn it off because she finds it annoying). I tried right-clicking on the volume icon in the notification area and went through all of the sounds in the list, thinking I could find the one offending noise and just turn it off. But none of them seem to correspond to the sound that plays when my wireless adapter randomly disconnects and reconnects to the wireless network.

  • Wireless technology - which is better: more single radio APs or less dual radio APs?

    - by gert_78
We are currently talking to vendors of wireless solutions for a wireless deployment in a university campus with some 5000 students. One vendor is offering us a Cisco solution with a WLC 5508 controller and 69 2x2 MIMO Dual-band/Dual radio APs (Aironet AP 1042 model) The other vendor is offering us an Aruba solution with a 3600 controller and 96 2x2 MIMO dual band BUT single radio APs (Aruba AP93) Both vendors are charging 82.000 US$ (support, 3y service contracts, switches and additional required options all included of course) The Aruba vendor is trying to convince me that 96 single radio APs will give us more connection/users/capacity then the 69 dual radio APs. I have my doubts about that and since it is my core competence-domain I wanted to ask here the opinion of people that have a more profound knowledge and experience in this area. When you talk to vendors it's often hard to get objective information. So try to answer only if you are sure and please mention it if you are affiliated with one of the vendors. I appreciate all useful help and want to thank you in advance for the effort!

  • How to get Atheros ar242x wireless adapter working under Debian Linux?

    - by Mark
Does anybody know how to get the Atheros ar242x wireless adapter working under Debian Linux (5.0.2 and/or 5.0.3)? My Debian live CDs and install CDs both don't like this card at all. Curisouly, it seems to work on other, Debian-based, Linuxes. Is this a free/non-free Driver issue? I know Debian gets mardy about that. Although for what it's worth, the Live CD doesn't seem to detect my wired LAN connection either... Specifically this is on a Samsung R610 laptop (some version of which seem to have an intel wireless adapter - this one definitely doesn't!) I've tried all sorts of things but obviously on a live CD installing software is limited. I've also tinkerering with network config files and kernel modules etc but to no avail.

  • Security tips for adding wireless AP to domain network?

    - by Cy
I am researching best-practices for adding wireless to our existing domain network. My DHCP server is running Windows Server 03 Standard (not sure if thats useful). I am familiar with simple home networking but I thought I'd get some expert advice for the more advanced stuff. Any tips and / or best-practices? Is this Cisco Wireless Access Point a good option? Are there any additional hardware recommendations? Thank you in advance for your help.

  • How to restrict access to a specific wireless network to only 1 user profile in Windows 7.

    - by Mathlight
Hi all, I'm using Win7 SP1. I've got multiple users on the laptop that can / must connect to a wireless network, lets call it Wireless1. I've got an second wireless network, (lets call it Wireless2), which I want to limit access to only the admin user of the laptop. Now I can remove Wireless2 in the network manager every time, but i want a more user friendly solution, so that only the admin can connect to Wireless2, and all the other users cannot ( they may see the network, but must enter the password, like all other networks ). Any ideas?

  • Route gaming data over wireless and everything else through LAN?

    - by Alex
I have two internet connections available to me. One is via LAN.. not a great ping, but fast downloads. The other is via USB wireless adapter.. good ping, but slow downloads. I want to connect to both of them simultaneously. I want to be able to specify which data or application will use the wireless connection and route everything else through the lan connection. Is this possible, and how would I do it? Windows 7 x64 is my operating system. Here is the data from route print: http://pastebin.com/vsjQRpSM I'm still unsure of how to use this to make all of my data go through the nvidia lan interface, even after reading route /? Also, if I'm able to achieve that, will it override the ForceBindIP?

  • connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

    - by peter karasev
Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...

  • Making a Linux laptop flight-safe; disabling wireless/radio

    - by SpoonMeiser
I'm going on a long flight tomorrow, and would like to be able to use my laptop during the journey. Wireless devices like WiFi and bluetooth interfere with airplanes instruments, and shouldn't be used on flights. If my laptop does not have a physical rf-kill switch, is it sufficient to just ensure that the relevant modules do not get loaded? If so, is that always safe, or does it vary between different hardware? My particular situation, is a Samsung NC10 netbook. Atheros 5k wireless hardware. Debian sid with kernel 2.6.30-1-686. However, I think it'd be interesting to know the answer to this question for the general case; not just my specific case.

  • Layer 3 switch routing

    - by Yoshiwaan
I need help moving over to using our layer 3 switch as the inter vlan routing device rather than our cisco router. I've mostly got it working but I've got stuck near the end and need some advice (I think I just need a bit of education on the subject really). Cur I have a Dell PowerConnect 7048 connecting to a Cisco 1841 router. I've got a few key excerpts from the configs to provide the key information. On the powerconnect I have the following: ip routing ip default-gateway 172.31.14.1 ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.31.14.1 253 ! interface vlan 1 ip address 172.31.14.254 255.255.255.0 exit interface vlan 2 ip address 172.31.19.254 255.255.255.0 exit interface vlan 4 ip address 172.31.16.254 255.255.255.0 ! interface Gi1/0/1 description 'Link to L7Router01' switchport mode trunk switchport trunk allowed vlan except 3,7-4093 exit ! and on the Cisco the following: interface FastEthernet0/0 ip address 172.31.14.1 255.255.255.0 ip nat inside ip virtual-reassembly ! interface FastEthernet0/0.2 description Accounts VLAN encapsulation dot1Q 2 ip address 172.31.19.1 255.255.255.0 ip nat inside ip virtual-reassembly ! interface FastEthernet0/0.4 description Voice VLAN encapsulation dot1Q 4 ip address 172.31.16.1 255.255.255.0 ip nat inside ip virtual-reassembly ! So what I'm doing is moving clients over so that their default gateway is a 172.31.x.254 address rather than a 172.31.x.1 address. This works great for inter-vlan routing, I have no issues with this. The switch can also access the router no worries, and users on the 172.31.14.0/24 network can access all interfaces and sub-interfaces on the router, including 172.31.14.1. They can also access all of the interfaces that the router connects off to, no worries there. The problem I have is that users on the 172.31.16.0/24 and 172.31.19.0/24 subnets cannot access either 172.31.14.1 or any of the subnets the router connects to. They can, however, connect to BOTH of the sub interfaces on the router from either subnet. What am I missing here? Why can't the vlans connect to the non-sub interface on the router? Are tagged packets being sent to this interface?
