• What are suitable performance indicators for programmers?

  Hi, I am wondering what performance indicators people encounter, and think are realistic, for programmers in the workplace? I've seen numerous articles (I can't recall a really good one that I read right now) that detail how programmers will optimise for the metric they are being measured by (whether that be lines of code etc.). However, is there any metric that can be used as a good performance indicator of a programmer in the workplace, and conversely be used as a milestone by a programmer when negotiating with management? • Add UIView behind UITableView in UITableViewController code

  I would like to use a fixed image as the background in a simple grouped table view in my iPhone program. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, the background is always solid white. I have followed several supposed solutions on this site and others to no avail. Here is the relavant code in the viewDidLoad method of the table view controller class (note, this code uses a solid blue color rather than an image for simplicity's sake): self.tableView.opaque = NO; self.tableView.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; UIView *backgroundView = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 480)]; backgroundView.backgroundColor = [UIColor blueColor]; [self.tableView.window addSubview:backgroundView]; [backgroundView release]; I suspect that I am not positioning the backgroundView view in the right place. I have tried sendToBack:, bringToFront:, and others but I always just get a white background. Is it possible to do this from within the UITableViewController? Must I use Interface Builder?

  Hi, I've been shifted around roles a lot, and have been put in a support role which seems to deal out a lot of rubbish due to poor business management. Anyway, my line manager says that he's not sure he would recommend me for a developer role as they regard support as a poor technical role. What I resent is the fact that not all the information is available to us about what we're supporting and I miss coding. This thing I'm supporting has been regarded as a disaster when it went in and is still highly unstable. The thing is...does he have a point about Support roles being under developers, or are they completely two different kettle of fish?

• Emacs on Windows: how to protect built-in el files from being accidentally edited

  On Linux, they are all read only, so no problem. But on MS Windows, what happens is like this: I get curious about the definition of the command isearch-forward, I type C-h f isearch-forward and click on the link isearch.el from the help to get to the definition of the function, and while I am reading its definition, I press C-h or C-c many times, but I set Caps Lock as another Ctrl key, so sometimes it happens that I release Caps Lock too early, in which case C-h or C-c becomes inserting h or c, sometimes I notice that and undo it, but sometimes I don't notice it, and I even save them all with C-x s. What is a good way to protect the built-in el files from me on MS Windows?

• latest Xemacs on Windows binary download

  I'm trying to get an updated version for Windows vista. I previously got 21.4.22 but it's been a year since that release. The linux versions should be 22.x. I'm wondering if anyone else builds stable binaries for Windows ? 21.4.22 has several bugs and I cannot figure out how to fix them. I know Xemacs is not as active as GNU emacs but still aren't there any Xemacs users on windows who build their own copies even if the official site doesn't ? I would like to be able to compare buffers, files and directories apart from being able to edit any file : java, javascript, ruby, .bat, .sh, .xml, etc.

• Spring online repository for Maven

  I've just installed Maven2 for the first time. By default it pulls down a few useful jars into a local project: jakarta-commons, junit etc. I wanted to pull in the latest Spring release (2.5.6 at the time of writing). But the online repositories I looked at (iBiblio and Maven) only had much older versions of Spring libraries. Are there any other repositories that are kept up to date? What is the best practice here; can we maintain them ourselves? I would be prepared to help out maintaining this stuff!

• What next in the career map for a Lead QA Engineer

  I am a Lead QA Engineer in a Software company and at a stage in my career wherein i need to plan my next move. Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. Will moving to Test Automation eventually lead me to development. Even so, am i looking at step-down in pay and career-level. Option 3: Moving to Product Management.   To make story short, i'm building self-learning banner management system. Users will be able to insert these banners to their site when banners will be shown based on sales/impressions ratio. I have 4 tables Banners bannerID int bannerImage varchar.... SmartBanners smartBannerID int smartBannerArrayID int bannerID int impressionsCount int visibility tinyint (percents) SmartBannerArrays smartBannerArrayID int userID int Statistics bannerID int saleAmountPerDay decimal... Each night i need to generate new "visibility" for each SmartBanner based on whole SmartBannerArray that same user has. So i need to get sum of impressions and sales for each bannerID in SmartBannerArray. All comes to my mind is to use double cursor, one will loop thought SmartBannerArrays get needed values for sum of impressions and sales and then inner loop which will access each SmartBanner and change it's "visibility" percentage based on (sales/impressions)/(sumOfSales/sumOfImpressions)*100 Hope you get the picture... Is there any other way to design better tables or not to use double cursor to avoid server overload ?

Could it be that the string A::getString() returns is being allocated in A.dll and freed in main.exe? If so, why - and what would be a safe way to pass strings between DLLs (or executables, for that matter)? Without using wrappers like shared_ptr with a custom deleter.

Currently, here it is: ^[a-zA-Z\s/-]+ I'm using it to pull out medication names from a variety of formulation strings, for example: SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TRIMETHOPRIM 200-40 MG/5ML PO SUSP AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE 125 mg-31.25 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE AMOXICILLIN TRIHYDRATE 125 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE 125 mg-31.25 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE Amoxicillin 1000 MG / Clavulanate 62.5 MG Extended Release Tablet The resulting matches on these examples are: SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TRIMETHOPRIM AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE AMOXICILLIN TRIHYDRATE AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE Amoxicillin The first four are what I want, but on the fifth, I really need "Amoxicillin / Clavulanate". How would I pull out patterns like "Amoxicillin / Clavulanate" (in fifth row) while missing patterns like "MG/5 ML" (in the first row)?

• Can obfuscation (proguard) lead to MIDlet malfunction?

  Hi, Im trying to obfuscate a Java MIDlet with proguard. It runs ok on the PC, however, when I run it on the phone, the program opens, connects to the server, and then freezes. If I disable obfuscation, it runs ok again on the phone. Ive tryed all the obfuscation levels for apps (7, 8 and 9 at NetBeans), and none of them seems to work properly, and I cant release this app for comercial use without obfuscation. Also, the compiler throws some warnings: Note: duplicate definition of library class [java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream] Note: there were 14 duplicate class definitions. But I dont know if this is realy the problem. Does anyone knows what is wrong? The obfuscator arguments are listed below: Obfuscator Arguments (7): -dontusemixedcaseclassnames -default package '' -keep public class ** { public *; } Obfuscator Arguments (8): same as (7) plus -overloadaggressively.   For easy of development I'm using a ViewBox to wrap all content inside a Window. This is because my development machine has a smaller screen than the deployment machine so using a ViewBox allows for better realisation of proportion. Obviously there is no reason for it to be there on Release versions of the code. Is there an easy method to conditionally include/exclude that 'wrapping' ViewBox in XAML?   We've developed a web application where people can sign-up on our website to make use of our service. We have a functionality that allows users to send invites to their friends by looking up their contacts on Gmail, Yahoo Mail etc. My question is - do we have to use a 3rd party email management software like a MailChimp or SendGrid to send such emails or should we send them directly? If we send the emails directly and if the recipients start marking those emails as spam, isn't there a very high chance that we might get banned by Gmail, Yahoo etc.?

  I have an open source VSPackage that I would like to release with support for Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, and Visual Studio 2010. I'm trying to figure out how to create the installer and how to perform the package registration with each edition of Visual Studio. The deployment research I've done indicates my best bet for an installer is a VSIX inside an MSI. The registration research I've done is a lot less clear. VSPackage registration seems to differ for every edition (VS2005 uses regpkg, VS2008 uses pkgdef, VS2010 uses VSIX). Can anyone share their experiences and/or point me towards any information about the best approach for targeting multiple versions of Visual Studio? I'm looking for the easiest implementation and preferably keeping it in a single installer if reasonably feasible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have searched high and low for information, and it all seems to be out of date (referencing Silverlight 1.0 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 beta, release candidate and alpha packages) or just plain doesn't work under VS2008 SP1. What do I need to install, and which project do I need to create? I have installed the Silverlight 1.0 SDK, which gave me no starting point, the Silverlight 2.0 Tools for Visual Studio after a website suggested you could use that to develop 1.0 apps, but the suggested template doesn't exist, and Silverlight 3.0 Tools for Visual Studio, which was a last ditch resort.
