• Implement a Cellular Automaton ? "Rule 110"

  I was wondering how to use the Rule 110, with 55 lines and 14 cells. I have to then display that in an LED matrix display. Anyway my question is, how can I implement such automaton ?? I dont really know where to start, can someone please shed some light on how can I approach this problem ? Is there a specific METHOD I must follow ? • Avoiding string copying in Lua

  Say I have a C program which wants to call a very simple Lua function with two strings (let's say two comma separated lists, returning true if the lists intersect at all, false if not). The obvious way to do this is to push them onto the stack with lua_pushstring, which works fine, however, from the doc it looks like lua_pushstring but makes a copy of the string for Lua to work with. That means that to cross over to the Lua function is going to require two string copies which I could avoid by rewriting the Lua function in C. Is there any way to arrange things so that the existing C strings could be reused on the Lua side for the sake of performance (or would the strcpy cost pale into insignificance anyway)? From my investigation so far (my first couple of hours looking seriously at Lua), lite userdata seems like the sort of thing I want, but in the form of a string.

  Just installed and migrated a 2008 solution on Vista ultimate 64 and .net 4.0. Everything builds and test run surprisingly well but I got the hang description below while trying to run the app under SQLite (ran fine. Any clues? • Issues with the [embed] tag and fonts

  Hi, I have some issue with the [embed] tag. Even if I set the embedFonts property of the textfield to true the text doesn't show up. The thing is that it worked previously and after some changes (not related to fonts) it doesn't. I'd like to understand how the embed process for font works to find the error in my code. I declare : [Embed(source = 'asset/font.ttf', fontName="font", mimeType="application/x-font-truetype")] private static var font:String; to assign the font to the program. Then i call "font" when declaring my textFormat. Is the "fontName" property the link with the textformat ? I work with flashdevelop and the flex_sdk_4.0.0.14159 (the big adobe one, with air (~140mo)) Thx ! -Leg

• C#: how to check and display the content of a folder?

  I'm not sure whether this topics has been disscussed before or not, but I'm not sure the exact word to search for it. What method/class should I use? The program has 3 buttons: 1) for folder browsing, 2) scan for the selected folder content, and 3) open the file. When user browse the selected folder*(1), user click scan button to scan from the first file until the last available files and listed it text box(2)* and from that user can decide whether to open the files or not*(3)*. • Interacting with java code from C#

  We've written a Java program which we are looking to use and interact with from C#. What are our options? Optimally it would be possible to compile the Java application as a library (.DLL) that we could reference from C# perhaps using P/Invoke. This, however, doesn't appear to be an option according to the first few searches online. We opt to be able to use ASP.NET to built a search engine powered by the Java code, so if this opens up for any other options please let us know.

  Hi guys, What is the best approach to find if a given set(unsorted) is a perfect subset of a main set. I got to do some validation in my program where I got to compare the clients request set with the registered internal capability set. I thought of doing by having internal capability set sorted(will not change once registered) and do Binary search for each element in the client's request set. Is it the best I could get?   I've written a class in python that I want to wrap into a .net assembly via IronPython and instantiate in a C# application. I've migrated the class to IronPython, created a library assembly and referenced it. Now, how do I actually get an instance of that class? • Remote DocumentRoot in Apache gives a 404

  I have the following specified in my httpd.conf, but I get a 404 when attempting to connect to the server from another machine. If I set the docroot to the default htdocs directory, everything works fine. (note..   Lets say I have a function f[x_, y_], and two lists l1, l2. I'd like to evaluate f[x,y] where x runs over the list l1 and y runs over the list l2, and I'd like to do it without having to make all pairs of the form {l1[[i]],l2[[j]]}. (Motivation: I'm trying to implement some basic Haskell programs in Mathematica. In particular, I'd like to be able to code the Haskell program isMatroid::[[Int]]->Bool isMatroid b =and[or[sort(union(xs\\[x])[y]'elem'b|y<-ys]|xs<-b,ys<-b, xs<-x] I think I can do the rest of it, if I can figure out the original question, but I'd like the code to be Haskell-like. • Getting progress status out of a class library method

  This app that I am doing uses a class library (if I dare call it that) to do the bulk of the work: 2 main methods in there (DoWork and UndoWork) use the other classes to achieve thier goal. Now that that works, I want to get out of the Console test enviroment and do a GUI. How would I get the status of say, the DoWork() method to update a progress bar? Should I multilate the class library (which currently works with the Console and Windows.Forms) to update? The problem with that is that I would surely have to make the class library use Window.Forms which will mess up the console testing apps (And there are lots of them - I tested all the way through, and then all together). Could you suggest some ideas, or places I can read up about ideas (the whole point of writing this this program is to learn, afer all)? Oh, by the way, suggestions like "foresight" or "planning" probably won't help here...(now, anywyay!) - But certainly will in future projects!

• Why can't QFile read from the "~" directory?

  I've tried the following short example to find out about a bug in a bigger program I am working on. It looks like QFile doesn't support unix (or the shell's) notation for the home directory: #include <QFile> #include <QDebug> int main() { QFile f("~/.vimrc"); if (f.open(QIODevice::ReadOnly)) { qDebug() << f.readAll(); f.close(); } else { qDebug() << f.error(); } } As soon as I replace the "~" with my real home directory path, it works. Is there an easy workaround - some setting to enable? Or do I have to go the "ugly" way and ask QDir for the home directory of the current user and prepend that manually to each path?

  So I wrote a project-management program for a small business using Microsoft Access 2007. Now they've requested lots of additional features (timekeeping, privileged data tiers ...) I personally use Linux, but the whole office uses Windows. I'm relatively new to programming but like to teach myself using projects like this. I'm right on the edge on this -- I can't really tell what the path of least resistance here is: do I stay in access + VBA and teach myself a dying, annoying language -- while struggling against all the limitations of Access? Or do I move to something else? Python seems simple enough ... Whatever I use, i need to be able to offer a GUI.

Apparently each pair of "44" is interpreted as 'D'. My ASCII table approves this. But how do I get my program to output the actual register content (0x44444444)?

But for all the stuff i need to draw myself i would like to use the same drawing routines because font and unicode handling is so difficult and complex. Do you see any negative points in useing Pango/Cairo. Well on MacOSX i havent succeded installing Pango/Cairo yet. Looks like a bad Omen. I would also like to hear about the performance penality. The first time i looked at Pango i thought, yes thats the reason why Software is still getting despite better hardware.

• Conceptual question about NSAutoreleasePools

  In my Cocoa program, wouldn't a really simple way of dealing with autoreleased objects be to just create a timer object inside the app delegate that calls the following method e.g. every 10 seconds: if (pool) { // Release & drain the current pool to free the memory. [pool release]; } // Create a new pool. pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; The only problems I can imagine are: 1) If the above code runs in a separate thread, an object might get autoreleased between the release call to the old pool and the creation of the new pool - that seems highly unlikely though. 2) It's obviously not that efficient, because the pool might get released if there's nothing in it. Likewise, in the 10 second gap, many many objects might be autoreleased, causing the pool to grow a lot. Still, the above solution seems pretty suitable to small and simple projects. Why doesn't anybody use it? What's the best practice of using NSAutoreleasePools?

• Programming with midi, and tuning notes to specific frequencies

  I am working on a project in which I need to be able to generate midi notes of varying frequencies with as much accuracy as possible. I originally tried to write my program in Java, but it turns out that the sound.midi package does not support changing the tunings of notes unless the frequencies are Equal Tempered frequencies (or at least it didn't in 1.4, and I haven't been able to find evidence that this has been fixed in recent versions). I have been trying to find a more appropriate language/library to accomplish this task, but since this is my first time programming with MIDI and my need for specific tuning functionality is essential, I have been having considerable trouble finding exactly what I need. I am looking for advice from people who have experience writing MIDI programs as to what languages are useful, especially for tuning notes to specific frequencies. Any links to websites with API docs and example code would also be extremely helpful.

• Visual Studio 2005 - VC++ compiler C1001 on Windows 7

  When I try to build a simple "Hello World" C++ app on Windows 7 Beta, using Visual Studio 2005 (VC++2005) I get a rather generic error C1001 error (Internal compiler error) The compiler seems to just crash, and Windows pops up its (un)helpful This program has stopped working dialog. The file it complains about is mcp1.cpp. Has anyone come across this before? • C++ iostream not setting eof bit even if gcount returns 0

  Hi I'm developping an application under windows, and i'm using fstreams to read and write to the file. I'm writing with fstream opened like this : fs.open(this->filename.c_str(), std::ios::in|std::ios::out|std::ios::binary); and writing with this command fs.write(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); closing the file after each write with fs.close() Reading with ifstream opened like this : is.open(filename, std::ios::in); and reading with this command : is.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); The write is going fine. However, i read in a loop this way : while(!is.eof()) { is.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); } and the program keeps reading, even though the end of file should be reached. istellg pos is 0, and gcount is equal to 0 too, but the fail bit and eof bit are both ok. I'm running crazy over this, need some help ...

• Where are the static methods in gcc's dump file.c.135r.jump

  When I run gcc with the parameter -fdump-rtl-jump, I get a dump file with the name file.c.135r.jump, where I can read some information about the intermediate representation of the methods in my C or C++ file. I just recently discovered, that the static methods of a project are missing in this dump file. Do you know, why they are missing in that representation and if there is a possibility to include the static methods in this file, too. Update (some additional information): The test program, I'm using here, is the Hybrid OpenMP MPI Benchmark. Update2: I just reproduced the problem with a serial application, so it has nothing to do with parallel sections.
