  • Calling super()

    - by Mike
When do you call super() in Java? I see it in some constructors of the derived class, but isn't the constructors for each of the parent class called automatically? Why would you need to use super?

  • instantiate object with reflection using constructor arguments

    - by justin
I'm trying to figure out how to instantiate a case class object with reflection. Is there any support for this? The closest I've come is looking at scala.reflect.Invocation, but this seems more for executing methods that are a part of an object. case class MyClass(id:Long, name:String) def instantiate[T](className:String)(args:Any*) : T = { //your code here } Is close to the API I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Passing data to overridden base method in C#

    - by UpTheCreek
Bit of a dumb question, but I'm wondering what the accepted way of passing data from back to an overridden base method is in c#. e.g. I guess I could do: class A { int x; public virtual void DoStuff() { Console.WriteLine(x); } } class B : A { public override void DoStuff() { x = 1; base.DoStuff(); } } But is there a better method that for example doesn't require the use of a member variable?

  • Singleton & Multithreading in Java

    - by vivek jagtap
What is the preferred way to work with Singleton class in multithreaded environment? Suppose if I have 3 thread, and all they try to access getInstance() method of singleton class at the same time - What would happen if no synchronization is maintained? Is it good practice to use synchronized getInstance() method or use synchronized block inside getInstance(). Please advise if there is any other way out.

  • Visual Studio code generated when choosing to explicitly implement interface

    - by fearofawhackplanet
Sorry for the vague title, but I'm not sure what this is called. Say I add IDisposable to my class, Visual Studio can create the method stub for me. But it creates the stub like: void IDisposable.Dispose() I don't follow what this syntax is doing. Why do it like this instead of public void Dispose()? And with the first syntax, I couldn't work out how to call Dispose() from within my class (in my destructor).

  • Print layout of C++ object with g++ compiler

    - by zaheer
Is there a way to print the layout of a C++ object using the g++ compiler or any other means. A simplified example (assuming int takes 4 bytes) class A{ int a; }; class B:public A{ int b; } so the output would be A - 0 4 + a + B- 0 4 8 + A.a + b + It would be useful to understand the layout of objects (in my case virtual machine code). Thanks in advance. Regards, Zaheer

  • C++ Performance/memory optimization guidelines

    - by ML
Hi All, Does anyone have a resource for C++ memory optimization guidelines? Best practices, tuning, etc? As an example: Class xxx { public: xxx(); virtual ~xxx(); protected: private: }; Would there be ANY benefit on the compiler or memory allocation to get rid of protected and private since there there are no items that are protected and private in this class?

  • Adding procedural C openGL functions to an iPhone project

    - by user309595
I want to add a few drawing functions to an iPhone project for drawing things. Something like drawTile(x,y,len, wid); which would call openGL to draw a box somewhere. I should just be able to write a procedural C file to do this but the openGL libraries are objective C and I'm getting weird errors. Do I have to make a class for all of my drawing commands and call class methods?

  • Method-Object pairs in Java

    - by John Manak
I'd like to create a list of method-object pairs. Each method is a function returning a boolean. Then: foreach(pair) { if method evaluates to true { do something with the object } } One way of modelling this that I can think of is to have a class Constraint with a method isValid() and for each constraint produce an anonymous class (overriding the isValid() method). I feel like there could be a nicer way. Can you think of any?

  • Are methods also serialized along with the data members in .NET?

    - by Shaza
The title is obvious, I need to know if methods are serialized along with object instances in C#, I know that they don't in Java but I'm a little new to C#. If they don't, do I have to put the original class with the byte stream(serialized object) in one package when sending it to another PC? Can the original class be like a DLL file?

  • Hint to MVC view generator for primary key on POCOs

    - by myotherme
When generating a strongly-typed Index view for my model I always get the following: <%= Html.ActionLink("Edit", "Edit", new { /* id=item.PrimaryKey */ }) %> I am using a POCO class for use with our ORM. As I understand it when using LINQ to SQL the view code will know which field is the primary key. Is there a way that I can an attribute to the property (or class) that will let the View Generator know that the ID property if the primary key?

  • CSS / HTML - Image will not show up

    - by weka
    Ugh, ok. I've been up all night working this thing and now an image won't show. It's so darn annoying. Trying to get this .png image to show up on a simple PHP webpage. I just wanna go to sleep X_X CSS: <style> .achievement { position:relative; width:500px; background:#B5B5B5; float:left; padding:10px; margin-bottom:10px; } .icon { float:left; width:32px; height:32px; background: url("images/trophy.php") no-repeat center; padding:05px; border:4px solid #4D4D4D; } .ptsgained { position:absolute; top:0; right:0; background:#79E310; color:#fff; font-family:Tahoma; font-weight:bold; font-size:12px; padding:5px; } .achievement h1 { color:#454545; font-size:12pt; font-family:Georgia; font-weight:none; margin:0;padding:0; } .achievement p { margin:0;padding:0; font-size:12px; font-family:Tahoma; color:#1C1C1C; } .text { margin-left:10px; float:left; } </style> HTML: <div class="achievement"> <span class="ptsgained">+10</span> <div class="icon"></div> <div class="text"><h1>All Around Submitter</h1> <p>Submit and have approved content in all 6 areas.</p> </div> </div> What am I doing wrong, guys? :\

  • Is it possible to restrict how a method can be called in PHP?

    - by Ashley Ward
Given that my class looks like this: class Methods{ function a(){ return 'a'; } function b(){ $this->a(); } function c(){ $this->a(); } } Is it possible to ensure that function a can only be called from function b? In the above example function c should fail. I could just include it in function b, but in the future I may want to let a() be called by some new functions (e.g. d() or e())

  • Is there a straightforward way to have a ThreadStatic instance member?

    - by Dan Tao
With the ThreadStatic attribute I can have a static member of a class with one instance of the object per thread. This is really handy for achieving thread safety using types of objects that don't guarantee thread-safe instance methods (e.g., System.Random). It only works for static members, though. Is there some corresponding attribute that provides the same functionality, but for instance members? In other words, that allows me to have one instance of the object, per thread, per instance of the containing class?

  • relaxng schema - use attributes for members and elements for structures?

    - by rpkrpk
For a data-binding application, I am trying to draw parallels among RelaxNG, C++ and C. RelaxNG.Elements === C++.Class === C.Struct RelaxNG.Attributes === C++.class-members === C.structure-members Only that the Elements in RelaxNG can also have a data-type (i.e. it seems Attribute is a special case of the Element). Do I have the above equivalence correct? If I use the above convention in my implementation, will I be breaking some data-binding libraries?
