• What is the best way to determine the path to the ISV directory?

  MSCRM 4.0 Problem: I'm currently storing xml files in the ISV directory along with my web applications. From a plugin (or potentially a seperate app), I need to find an easy way to navigate to the ISV directory to read these xml files. This routine will be called extremely often, so processing minimization should be a strong consideration. Potential solutions: Registry: There is a registry key called 'WebSitePath' with the data 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\CRM'. Could potentially use this to build the path. (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) IIS directory data: Looping through the DirectoryEntries of path '"IIS://localhost/W3SVC"' I could obtain the the web application where description is equal to "Microsoft Dynamics CRM". (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) Webservice: Create one to read and return the data contained in these xml files The webservice would have easy access to its executing directory. Database: Store the data of these files in the database. Help: Can anyone suggest a simpler solution to obtaining and reading a file from the ISV directory? If not, which of the above solutions would be the quickest to process? Thanks for any and all contributions.

• Why is iPdb not displaying STOUT after my input?

  I can't figure out why ipdb is not displaying stout properly. I'm trying to debug why a test is failing and so I attempt to use ipdb debugger. For some reason my Input seems to be accepted, but the STOUT is not displayed until I (c)ontinue. Is this something broken in ipdb? It makes it very difficult to debug a program. • PHP: Array of objects is empty when I come to retrieve one from the array

  Good morning, I am trying to load rows from a database and then create objects from them and add these objects to a private array. This is code which creates this classes and attempts to access the properties on them: $stations = new stationList(); $station = $stations->getStation(0); echo $station->getCode(); I am finding that the sizeof($stationList) at the end of the constructor is 1 but then it is zero when we come to try to get an object from the array using the index. Therefore the error that I get is: Fatal error: Call to a member function getCode() on a non-object Please can someone explain to me why this is happening? I guess I am misunderstanding how object references work in PHP5.

• Creating and publishing exel file in MOSS 2007 using data from SQL sever.

  Hello, I need help in this matter: We have a template of exel file in which all calculations are already set. User can request a 'report'. Idea is to create a button on our site (SharePoint portal). After clicking on it a new exel file is generated. This means to get actual data from database (SQL server 2005 SP2), import them into template, let all calculations to generate proper data and then allow user to see this file. For now it's enough to publish final exel file in document library. I am quite new in WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 and I need some advice in what can be the best solution. Looks like a quite complex task for me. Is there some direct way how to accomplish this? Or maybe I need one tool to get data from database and to import this data into exel file (SSRS?) and other tool to publish it in document library (MOSS7 Exel services?). I heard something about PerformancePoint Server 2007, is this a way to follow? Thanks forward for any advice!

• Proper use of the IDisposable interface

  I know from reading the MSDN documentation that the "primary" use of the IDisposable interface is to clean up unmanaged resources http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.idisposable.aspx. To me, "unmanaged" means things like database connections, sockets, window handles, etc. But, I've seen code where the Dispose method is implemented to free managed resources, which seems redundant to me, since the garbage collector should take care of that for you. For example: public class MyCollection : IDisposable { private List<String> _theList = new List<String>(); private Dictionary<String, Point> _theDict = new Dictionary<String, Point>(); // Die, you gravy sucking pig dog! public void Dispose() { _theList.clear(); _theDict.clear(); _theList = null; _theDict = null; } My question is, does this make the garbage collector free memory used by MyCollection any faster than it normally would? edit: So far people have posted some good examples of using IDisposable to clean up unmanaged resources such as database connections and bitmaps. But suppose that _theList in the above code contained a million strings, and you wanted to free that memory now, rather than waiting for the garbage collector. Would the above code accomplish that?

• How to estimate size of data to transfer when using DbCommand.ExecuteXXX?

  I want to show the user detailed progress information when performing potentially lengthy database operations. Specifically, when inserting/updating data that may be on the order of hundreds of KB or MB. Currently, I'm using in-memory DataTables and DataRows which are then synced with the database via TableAdapter.Update calls. This works fine and dandy, but the single call leaves little opportunity to glean any kind of progress info to show to the user. I have no idea how much data is passing through the network to the remote DB or its progress. Basically, all I know is when Update returns and it is assumed complete (barring any errors or exceptions). But this means all I can show is 0% and then a pause and then 100%. I can count the number of rows, even going so far to cound how many are actually Modified or Added, and I could even maybe calculate per DataRow its estimated size based on the datatype of each column, using sizeof for value types like int and checking length for things like strings or byte arrays. With that, I could probably determine, before updating, an estimated total transfer size, but I'm still stuck without any progress info once Update is called on the TableAdapter. Am I stuck just using an indeterminate progress bar or mouse waiting cursor? Would I need to radically change our data access layer to be able to hook into this kind of information? Even if I can't get it down to the precise KB transferred (like a web browser file download progress bar), could I at least know when each DataRow/DataTable finishes or something? How do you best show this kind of progress info using ADO.NET?

  I know there are many RAD platforms out there. Infact there are so many that I'm having a hard time finding out which one fits me best. What I want is a RAD tool that would allow me to define a database data model (make DB tables) and then create (view and edit) forms for the various tables. Data input, updating and various queries should be easy and GUI should generate automatically. I'd like to add some additional functionality by coding (such as various complex calculations on the data). I'm a programmer so I'm willing to learn to use a more complete, full-blown RAD solution if you can point me to it (NetBeans and RubyOnRails being the two such frameworks that I'd would probably be high on the list). I'm currently doing Windows Forms logistics apps in .NET. I've actually developed a very crude and basic version of what I need, but I just know that there are solutions out there that are much better and I'd benefit by knowing how to use them. So in short, the basic requirements: * database based data storage (SQLite if possible) * very automated GUI creation * desktop based (as in: not a web app) * extendable by coding * used for creating simple data entry, view & query apps. So basically something like Oracle Forms or DotNetMushroom Rapid Application Developer. But for .NET and SQLite if possible.

• jeditable not updating browser display - leaves "click to edit..." after succesful edit

  I am using jeditable fairly simply and it all works fine, updates the database, etc. The only problem I have is after the user types the new value data and hits enter it doesn't update the field in the browser to show the new value - instead it puts "Click to edit..." in place of it. Am I missing something like a return value from my php file? the php fucntion just takes the args and updates the database - and it works fine. • SSAS Cube reprocessing fails - then succeeds if I try again

  So I'm basically brand new to the concept of BI, and I've inherited an existing ETL process that is a two step process: 1) Loads the data into a database that is only used by the cube processing 2) Starts off the SSAS cube processing against said database It seems pretty well isolated, but occasionally (once a week, sometimes twice) it will fail with the following exception: "Errors in the OLAP storage engine: The attribute key cannot be found" Now the interesting thing is that: 1) The dimension having the issue is not usually the same one (i.e. there's no single dimension that consistently has this failure) 2) The source table, when I inspect it, does actually contain the attribute key that it says could not be found And, most interestingly... 3) If I then immediately reprocess the dimensions and cubes manually through SSMS, they reprocess successfully and without incident. In both the aforementioned job and when I reprocess them through SSMS, I am using "ProcessFull", so it should be reprocessing them completely. Has anyone run into such an issue? I'm scratching my head about it... because if it was a genuine data integrity issue, reprocessing the cube again wouldn't fix it. What on earth could be happening? I've been tasked with finding out why this happens, but I can neither reproduce it consistently nor can I point to a data integrity problem as the root cause. Thanks for any input you can provide!

• Tips on managing dependencies for a release?

  Our system comprises many .NET websites, class libraries, and a MSSQL database. We use SVN for source control and TeamCity to automatically build to a Test server. Our team is normally working on 4 or 5 projects at a time. We try to lump many changes into a largish rollout every 2-4 weeks. My problem is with keeping track of all the dependencies for a rollout. Example: Website A cannot go live until we've rolled out Branch X of Class library B, built in turn against the Trunk of Class library C, which needs Config Updates Y and Z and Database Update D, which needs Migration Script E... It gets even more complex - like making sure each developer's project is actually compatible with the others and are building against the same versions. Yes, this is a management issue as much as a technical issue. Currently our non-optimal solution is: a whiteboard listing features that haven't gone live yet relying on our memory and intuition when planning the rollout, until we're pretty sure we've thought of everything... a dry-run on our Staging environment. It's a good indication but we're often not sure if Staging is 100% in sync with Live - part of the problem I'm hoping to solve. some amount of winging it on rollout day. So far so good, minus a few close calls. But as our system grows, I'd like a more scientific release management system allowing for more flexibility, like being able to roll out a single change or bugfix on it's own, safe in the knowledge that it won't break anything else. I'm guessing the best solution involves some sort of version numbering system, and perhaps using a project management tool. We're a start-up, so we're not too hot on religiously sticking to rigid processes, but we're happy to start, providing it doesn't add more overhead than it's worth. I'd love to hear advice from other teams who have solved this problem.

• Reading a CSV with file_get_contents in PHP

  I am reading a 'kind' of csv file and exploding it and storing it in array. The file I am reading has this structure Id,Log,Res,File mydb('Test1','log1','Pass','lo1.txt'). mydb('Test2','log2','Pass','lo2.txt'). mydb('Test3','log3','Pass','lo3.txt'). Now what I am trying to do is : reading the last record in my database, get the Name, lets say in this case 'Test1' and then I am searching through my file and where I can find the position of 'Test1' and get the next lines in the file, extract the ID,s and add it to database. I am getting the position of desired string in the file, but I am not sure how to get the next lines too. • Are we DELPHI, VCL or Pascal programmers?

  i´ve been a delphi database programmer since D2. Now i´m facing some digital imaging and 3D challenges that make me to start study OpenGL, DirectX, Color Spaces and so on. I´m really trying but nobody seems to use Delphi for this kind of stuff, just the good-old-paycheck Database programming. ok, i know that we have some very smart guys behind some clever components, some of this open-source. Is there any PhotoShop, Blender, Maya, Office, Sonar, StarCraft, Call of Dutty written in Delphi? Do i have to learn C++ to have access to zillions of books about that kind of stuff? What is the fuzz/hype behind this: int *varName = &anhoterThing? Why pointers seems to be the holy graal to this apps? I´ve downloaded MSVC++ Express and start to learn some WPF and QT integration, and i think: "Man, Delphi does this kind of stuff, with less code, less headaches, since the wheels were invented" This lead my mind to the following... Do you ever tried to write a simple notepad program using just notepad and dcc32 in Pascal/Delphi? if so embarcadero could make our beloved pascal compiler free, and sell just the ide, the vcl, the customer support ... and back to the question: Are we DELPHI, VCL or Pascal programmers?

• Parsing/Tokenizing a String Containing a SQL Command

  Are there any open source libraries (any language, python/PHP preferred) that will tokenize/parse an ANSI SQL string into its various components? That is, if I had the following string SELECT a.foo, b.baz, a.bar FROM TABLE_A a LEFT JOIN TABLE_B b ON a.id = b.id WHERE baz = 'snafu'; I'd get back a data structure/object something like //fake PHPish $results['select-columns'] = Array[a.foo,b.baz,a.bar]; $results['tables'] = Array[TABLE_A,TABLE_B]; $results['table-aliases'] = Array[a=TABLE_A, b=TABLE_B]; //etc... Restated, I'm looking for the code in a database package that teases the SQL command apart so that the engine knows what to do with it. I realize I could glop through an open source database's code to find what I want, but I was hoping for something a little more ready made, (although if you know where in the MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite source to look, feel free to pass it along) Thanks!

• Possible to recover mysql root pass with sudo server access?

  I've inherited development for a website on vps hosting, and have login info for a user with sudo privileges, but don't have the password for the mysql root user. After digging around a little, it looks like the only way to fix this is to stop mysql (something like this: http://waoewaoe.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/recover-reset-mysql-root-password/). But because the website it's serving is currently in production, I'm hoping you guys can enlighten me to any potential consequences (or let me know if there's typically a file where the password would be accessible). a) during the time mysql is stopped, information in the database won't be accessible, right -- even by other users? b) will resetting the root password have any impact on other users after mysql has restarted? Will their username/passwords still be valid? The current application is using an account with limited privileges to read/write to the database, and while 5min downtime in the middle of the night would probably go unnoticed, half a day while I tie up loose ends/figure out what I screwed up will land in me hot water. • JPA - Performance with using multiple entity manager

  My situation is: The code is not mine I have two kinds of database: one is Dad, one is Son. In Dad, I have a table to store JNDI name. I will look up Dad using JNDI, create entity manager, and retrieve this table. From these retrieved JNDI names, I will create multiple entity managers using multiple Son databases. The problem is: Son have thousands of entities. It takes each Son database around 10 minutes to load all entities. If there is 4 Son databases, it will be 40 minutes. My question: Is there any way to load all entities and use them for all entity manager? • Python Django Global Variables

  Hi all, I'm looking for simple but recommended way in Django to store a variable in memory only. When Apache restarts or the Django development server restarts, the variable is reset back to 0. More specifically, I want to count how many times a particular action takes place on each model instance (database record), but for performance reasons, I don't want to store these counts in the database. I don't care if the counts disappear after a server restart. But as long as the server is up, I want these counts to be consistent between the Django shell and the web interface, and I want to be able to return how many times the action has taken place on each model instance. I don't want the variables to be associated with a user or session because I might want to return these counts without being logged in (and I want the counts to be consistent no matter what user is logged in). Am I describing a global variable? If so, how do I use one in Django? I've noticed the files like the urls.py, settings.py and models.py seems to be parsed only once per server startup (by contrast to the views.py which seems to be parsed eache time a request is made). Does this mean I should declare my variables in one of those files? Or should I store it in a model attribute somehow (as long as it sticks around for as long as the server is running)? This is probably an easy question, but I'm just not sure how it's done in Django. Any comments or advice is much appreciated. Thanks, Joe

I keep getting errors when the Record Set Object attempts to open. If I pass a query without parameters, the recordset opens and I can work with the data. When I run the script through a debugger, the command object does not show a value for the parameter object. It seems to me that I am missing something that associates the Command object and Parameter object, but I do not know what. Here is a bit of the VBScript Code: ... It is something like this: SELECT column1 FROM table1 WHERE column1 IS LIKE ? I understand that ADO should replace the "?" with the parameter value I assign in the script. The problem I am seeing is that the Parameter object shows the correct value, but the command object's parameter field is null according to my debugger.

• Replacing unversioned files in WiX major upgrade.

  I am still having this problem. This is the closest I have come to a solution that works, and yet it doesn't quite work. Here is (most of) the code: <Product Id='$(var.ProductCode)' UpgradeCode='$(var.UpgradeCode)' Name="Pathways" Version='$(var.ProductVersion)' Manufacturer='$(var.Manufacturer)' Language='1033'> Maximum="$(var.ProductVersion)" IncludeMaximum="no" Language="1033" Property="OLDAPPFOUND" / -- -- -- There is a later version of this program installed. The problem I am having is that I need the two files in the Database component to replace the previous copies. Since these files are unversioned, I have attempted to use the CompanionFile tag set to the PathwaysExe since that is the main executable of the application, and it IS being updated, even if the log says it isn't! The strangest thing about this is that the PathwaysLdf file IS BEING UPDATED CORRECTLY, and the PathwaysMdf file IS NOT. The log seems to indicate that the "Existing file is of an equal version (Checked using version of companion)". This is very strange because that file is being replaced just fine. The only idea I have left is that this problem has to do with the install sequence, and I'm not sure how to proceed! I have the InstallExecuteSequence set like I do because of the SettingsXml file, and my need to NOT overwrite that file, which is actually working now, so whatever solution works for the database files can't break the working settings file! ;) The full log is located at: http://pastebin.com/HFiGKuKN PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

• Got a table of people, who I want to link to each other, many-to-many, with the links being bidirect

  Imagine you live in very simplified example land - and imagine that you've got a table of people in your MySQL database: create table person ( person_id int, name text ) select * from person; +-------------------------------+ | person_id | name | +-------------------------------+ | 1 | Alice | | 2 | Bob | | 3 | Carol | +-------------------------------+ and these people need to collaborate/work together, so you've got a link table which links one person record to another: create table person__person ( person__person_id int, person_id int, other_person_id int ) This setup means that links between people are uni-directional - i.e. Alice can link to Bob, without Bob linking to Alice and, even worse, Alice can link to Bob and Bob can link to Alice at the same time, in two separate link records. As these links represent working relationships, in the real world they're all two-way mutual relationships. • Making one table equal to another without a delete *

  Hey, I know this is bit of a strange one but if anyone had any help that would be greatly appreciated. The scenario is that we have a production database at a remote site and a developer database in our local office. Developers make changes directly to the developer db and as part of the deployment process a C# application runs and produces a series of .sql scripts that we can execute on the remote side (essentially delete *, insert) but we are looking for something a bit more elaborate as the downtime from the delete * is unacceptable. This is all reference data that controls menu items, functionality etc of a major website. I have a sproc that essentially returns a diff of two tables. My thinking is that I can insert all the expected data in to a tmp table, execute the diff, and drop anything from the destination table that is not in the source and then upsert everything else. The question is that is there an easy way to do this without using a cursor? To illustrate the sproc returns a recordset structured like this: TableName Col1 Col2 Col3 Dest Src Anything in the recordset with TableName = Dest should be deleted (as it does not exist in src) and anything in Src should be upserted in to dest. I cannot think of a way to do this purely set based but my DB-fu is weak. Any help would be appreciated. Apologies if the explanation is sketchy; let me know if you need anymore details.

• How to avoid loading a LINQ to SQL object twice when editting it on a website.

  Hi guys I know you are all tired of this Linq-to-Sql questions, but I'm barely starting to use it (never used an ORM before) and I've already find some "ugly" things. I'm pretty used to ASP.NET Webforms old school developing, but I want to leave that behind and learn the new stuff (I've just started to read a ASP.NET MVC book and a .NET 3.5/4.0 one). So here's is one thing I didn't like and I couldn't find a good alternative to it. In most examples of editing a LINQ object I've seen the object is loaded (hitting the db) at first to fill the current values on the form page. Then, the user modify some fields and when the "Save" button is clicked, the object is loaded for second time and then updated. Here's a simplified example of ScottGu NerdDinner site. // // GET: /Dinners/Edit/5 [Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner)); } // // POST: /Dinners/Edit/5 [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post), Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection collection) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); UpdateModel(dinner); dinnerRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id=dinner.DinnerID }); } As you can see the dinner object is loaded two times for every modification. Unless I'm missing something about LINQ to SQL caching the last queried objects or something like that I don't like getting it twice when it should be retrieved only one time, modified and then comitted back to the database. So again, am I really missing something? Or is it really hitting the database twice (in the example above it won't harm, but there could be cases that getting an object or set of objects could be heavy stuff). If so, what alternative do you think is the best to avoid double-loading the object? Thank you so much, Greetings!
