  • What’s new in SQL Prompt 6.3?

    This post describes some of the improvements we’ve made in the latest version of SQL Prompt. Code suggestions In recent months, the focus of the SQL Prompt development team has been to remove annoyances and improve code suggestions. Here’s just a few of the improvements to code suggestions we’ve made in SQL Prompt 6.3: The suggestions box is no longer shown when there are no suggestions Suggestions are now shown if you continue to type a half-completed word More suggestions for new SQL Server 2014 syntax Improvements to partial match suggestions Improved suggestion ordering As well as improving suggestions, we’ve also added some new features. Select in Object Explorer You can now use SQL Prompt to select an object in the Object Explorer from a query window. This is useful because many SSMS features are available from an object’s Object Explorer context menu (eg select top 1000 rows, design, script as). To select an object in the Object Explorer, place the cursor over the object you want to select and press Ctrl + F12: Here’s a short video of the feature in action. $SELECTIONSTART$ and $SELECTIONEND$ placeholders You can now use $SELECTIONSTART$ and $SELECTIONEND$ placeholders in your snippet code. The code between these placeholders is selected when you insert the snippet.   • SQL SERVER – 5 Tips for Improving Your Data with expressor Studio

    It’s no secret that bad data leads to bad decisions and poor results.  However, how do you prevent dirty data from taking up residency in your data store?  Some might argue that it’s the responsibility of the person sending you the data.  While that may be true, in practice that will rarely hold up.  It doesn’t matter how many times you ask, you will get the data however they decide to provide it. So now you have bad data.  What constitutes bad data?  There are quite a few valid answers, for example: Invalid date values Inappropriate characters Wrong data Values that exceed a pre-set threshold While it is certainly possible to write your own scripts and custom SQL to identify and deal with these data anomalies, that effort often takes too long and becomes difficult to maintain.  Instead, leveraging an ETL tool like expressor Studio makes the data cleansing process much easier and faster.  Below are some tips for leveraging expressor to get your data into tip-top shape. Tip 1:     Build reusable data objects with embedded cleansing rules One of the new features in expressor Studio 3.2 is the ability to define constraints at the metadata level.  Using expressor’s concept of Semantic Types, you can define reusable data objects that have embedded logic such as constraints for dealing with dirty data.  Once defined, they can be saved as a shared atomic type and then re-applied to other data attributes in other schemas. As you can see in the figure above, I’ve defined a constraint on zip code.  I can then save the constraint rules I defined for zip code as a shared atomic type called zip_type for example.   The next time I get a different data source with a schema that also contains a zip code field, I can simply apply the shared atomic type (shown below) and the previously defined constraints will be automatically applied. Tip 2:     Unlock the power of regular expressions in Semantic Types Another powerful feature introduced in expressor Studio 3.2 is the option to use regular expressions as a constraint.   A regular expression is used to identify patterns within data.   The patterns could be something as simple as a date format or something much more complex such as a street address.  For example, I could define that a valid IP address should be made up of 4 numbers, each 0 to 255, and separated by a period.  So 192.168.23.123 might be a valid IP address whereas 888.777.0.123 would not be.   How can I account for this using regular expressions? A very simple regular expression that would look for any 4 sets of 3 digits separated by a period would be:  ^[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}$ Alternatively, the following would be the exact check for truly valid IP addresses as we had defined above:  ^(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1[0-9]{2}|[1-9]?[0-9])\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1[0-9]{2}|[1-9]?[0-9])\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1[0-9]{2}|[1-9]?[0-9])\.(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|1[0-9]{2}|[1-9]?[0-9])$ .  In expressor, we would enter this regular expression as a constraint like this: Here we select the corrective action to be ‘Escalate’, meaning that the expressor Dataflow operator will decide what to do.  Some of the options include rejecting the offending record, skipping it, or aborting the dataflow. Tip 3:     Email pattern expressions that might come in handy In the example schema that I am using, there’s a field for email.  Email addresses are often entered incorrectly because people are trying to avoid spam.  While there are a lot of different ways to define what constitutes a valid email address, a quick search online yields a couple of really useful regular expressions for validating email addresses: This one is short and sweet:  \b[A-Z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}\b (Source: http://www.regular-expressions.info/) This one is more specific about which characters are allowed:  ^([a-zA-Z0-9_\-\.]+)@((\[[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.)|(([a-zA-Z0-9\-]+\.)+))([a-zA-Z]{2,4}|[0-9]{1,3})(\]?)$ (Source: http://regexlib.com/REDetails.aspx?regexp_id=26 ) Tip 4:     Reject “dirty data” for analysis or further processing Yet another feature introduced in expressor Studio 3.2 is the ability to reject records based on constraint violations.  To capture reject records on input, simply specify Reject Record in the Error Handling setting for the Read File operator.  Then attach a Write File operator to the reject port of the Read File operator as such: Next, in the Write File operator, you can configure the expressor operator in a similar way to the Read File.  The key difference would be that the schema needs to be derived from the upstream operator as shown below: Once configured, expressor will output rejected records to the file you specified.  In addition to the rejected records, expressor also captures some diagnostic information that will be helpful towards identifying why the record was rejected.  This makes diagnosing errors much easier! Tip 5:    Use a Filter or Transform after the initial cleansing to finish the job Sometimes you may want to predicate the data cleansing on a more complex set of conditions.  For example, I may only be interested in processing data containing males over the age of 25 in certain zip codes.  Using an expressor Filter operator, you can define the conditional logic which isolates the records of importance away from the others. Alternatively, the expressor Transform operator can be used to alter the input value via a user defined algorithm or transformation.  It also supports the use of conditional logic and data can be rejected based on constraint violations. However, the best tip I can leave you with is to not constrain your solution design approach – expressor operators can be combined in many different ways to achieve the desired results.  For example, in the expressor Dataflow below, I can post-process the reject data from the Filter which did not meet my pre-defined criteria and, if successful, Funnel it back into the flow so that it gets written to the target table. I continue to be impressed that expressor offers all this functionality as part of their FREE expressor Studio desktop ETL tool, which you can download from here.  Their Studio ETL tool is absolutely free and they are very open about saying that if you want to deploy their software on a dedicated Windows Server, you need to purchase their server software, whose pricing is posted on their website.   • Meta Information within Apache config files

    I have a number of VirtualHosts config files controlling sites served on Ubuntu server using Apache. I'm writing a ruby script to parse these files, and then display information about the site being hosted. One of the things I'd like to do is display a user friendly name for each site for easier identification, rather than relying on ServerName, or ServerAlias, to determine the site name. Does anyone know of an Apache configuration directive that exists for this purpose, or for displaying other related meta information about a config file, or will I have to use comments rather than a directive instead? Thanks!

    I'm getting this error with IIS 6.0 (i assume), and PHP 5.2.3, and FastCGI FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. Error Details: Error Number: 5 (0x80070005). Error Description: Access is denied. HTTP Error 500 - Server Error. Internet Information Services (IIS) Any ideas, nothing revealings in logs (other than 500 errors), this is pretty much all of I have to work with. The script has read and execute privileged for the internet guest account; and, I've added read/execute privileges to the whole D:\PHP. I followed this tutorial http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/247/using-fastcgi-to-host-php-applications-on-iis-60/ to set it up. The only major diversion is I installed PHP to D:\PHP

  • defunct dbus-daemon zombie freezes login for 30 seconds

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (Precise Pangolin) and noticed a 30 second delay whenever i log into my server via ssh or perform any kind of login via sudo on that machine. I can provoke immediate execution by killing the defunct dbus-daemon showing up during the delay: output of ps fax |grep dbus 19222 ? Ss 0:00 dbus-daemon --system --fork --activation=upstart 19752 ? Z 0:00 \_ [dbus-daemon] <defunct> taping into the dbus using dbus-monitor --system i'm getting: signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=7 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.4" string "" string ":1.4" each login. Stopping the dbus service eliminates this problem but probably causes many other... I'm not running xorg on the machine but the packages are present for X11 forwarding capabilities. I've ruled out the common motd script delay and ssh "UseDNS no" fixes one finds when looking up login delay issues. Many thanks in advance for any help with this, it's been driving me crazy ;-)

  • ASP.NET MVC: Using jQuery context menu with tables

    I needed to add context menus to some tables of my intranet application. After trying some components I found one that does everything I need and has no overhead. In this posting I will show you how to use jQuery context menu plug-in and how to attach it to tables. I found context menu plug-in by Chris Domigan and it was very easy to integrate to my application (when comparing some other plug-ins that work only on demo pages and in simple scenarios). Thanks, Chris, for great work! Now let’s use this context menu plug-in with table. Before we go on let’s see what we are trying to achieve. The following screenshot fragment shows simple context menu that we want to attach to our table. And when we click some menu option then something should happen too. :) Installing context menu plug-in Download plug-in (if download link is broken then open demo page and I think you know how to get plug-in from there). Copy jquery.contextmenu.js to your scripts folder. Include it in your masterpage or in the page where you plan to use context menus. Conclusion We saw than using jQuery with context menu component allows us easily create powerful context menus for our user interfaces. Context menu was very easy to define. We were also able to attach context menu to table and use ID of current row entity also in events of context menu. To achieve this we needed only some minor modifications in view and couple of lines of JavaScript.

  • Sending ctrl-backslash from Windows to Linux using Synergy

    I'm using Synergy+ to share the keyboard and mouse between a Windows and a Linux (Red Hat) PC. The Windows box is the server, Linux is the client, and both are running version 1.3.4. My Windows box is set up for English UK keyboard. In a Linux terminal window, Ctrl+\ (backslash) sends a quit signal to the currently running program - useful to kill a Python script that's run amok, for example. When I try to do this via synergy, Ctrl+- (minus) is sent instead. This has the undesired effect of resizing my terminal window :( Backslash on its own and Shift-backslash = pipe both work fine. Any ideas what's happening?

  • PASS Summit Feedback

    PASS Feedback came in last week. I also saw my dentist for some fillings... At the PASS Summit this year, I delivered a couple of regular sessions and a Lightning Talk. People told me they enjoyed it, but when the rankings came out, they showed that I didn’t score particularly well. Brent Ozar was keen to discuss it with me. Brent: PASS speaker feedback is out. You did two sessions and a Lightning Talk. How did you go? Rob: Not so well actually, thanks for asking. Brent: Ha! Sorry. Of course you know that's why I wanted to discuss this with you. I was in one of your sessions at SQLBits in the UK a month before PASS, and I thought you rocked. You've got a really good and distinctive delivery style.  Then I noticed your talks were ranked in the bottom quarter of the Summit ratings and wanted to discuss it. Rob: Yeah, I know. You did ask me if we could do this...  I should explain – my presentation style is not the stereotypical IT conference one. I throw in jokes, and try to engage the audience thoroughly. I find many talks amazingly dry, and I guess I try to buck that trend. I also run training courses, and find that I get a lot of feedback from people thanking me for keeping things interesting. That said, I also get feedback criticising me for my style, and that’s basically what’s happened here. For the rest of this discussion, let’s focus on my talk about the Incredible Shrinking Execution Plan, which I considered to be my main talk. Brent: I thought that session title was the very best one at the entire Summit, and I had it on my recommended sessions list.  In four words, you managed to sum up the topic and your sense of humor.  I read that and immediately thought, "People need to be in this session," and then it didn't score well.  Tell me about your scores. Rob: The questions on the feedback form covered the usefulness of the information, the speaker’s presentation skills, their knowledge of the subject, how well the session was described, the amount of time allocated, and the quality of the presentation materials. Brent: Presentation materials? But you don’t do slides.  Did they rate your thong? Rob: No-one saw my flip-flops in this talk, Brent. I created a script in Management Studio, and published that afterwards, but I think people will have scored that question based on the lack of slides. I wasn’t expecting to do particularly well on that one. That was the only section that didn’t have 5/5 as the most popular score. Brent: See, that sucks, because cookbook-style scripts are often some of my favorites.  Adam Machanic's Service Broker workbench series helped me immensely when I was prepping for the MCM.  As an attendee, I'd rather have a commented script than a slide deck.  So how did you rank so low? Rob: When I look at the scores that you got (based on your blog post), you got very few scores below 3 – people that felt strong enough about your talk to post a negative score. In my scores, between 5% and 10% were below 3 (except on the question about whether I knew my stuff – I guess I came as knowledgeable). Brent: Wow – so quite a few people really didn’t like your talk then? Rob: Yeah. Mind you, based on the comments, some people really loved it. I’d like to think that there would be a certain portion of the room who may have rated the talk as one of the best of the conference. Some of my comments included “amazing!”, “Best presentation so far!”, “Wow, best session yet”, “fantastic” and “Outstanding!”. I think lots of talks can be “Great”, but not so many talks can be “Outstanding” without the word losing its meaning. One wrote “Pretty amazing presentation, considering it was completely extemporaneous.” Brent: Extemporaneous, eh? Rob: Yeah. I guess they don’t realise how much preparation goes into coming across as unprepared. In many ways it’s much easier to give a written speech than to deliver a presentation without slides as a prompt. Brent: That delivery style, the really relaxed, casual, college-professor approach was one of the things I really liked about your presentation at SQLbits.  As somebody who presents a lot, I "get" it - I know how hard it is to come off as relaxed and comfortable with your own material.  It's like improv done by jazz players and comedians - if you've never tried it, you don't realize how hard it is.  People also don't realize how hard it is to make a tough subject fun. Rob: Yeah well... There will be people writing comments on this post that say I wasn't trying to make the subject fun, and that I was making it all about me. Sometimes the style works, sometimes it doesn't. Most of the comments mentioned the fact that I tell jokes, some in a nice way, but some not so much (and it wasn't just a PASS thing - that's the mix of feedback I generally get). One comment at PASS was: “great stand up comedian - not what I'm looking for at pass”, and there were certainly a few that said “too many jokes”. I’m not trying to do stand-up – jokes are my way of engaging with the audience while I demonstrate some of the amazing things that the Query Optimizer can do if you write your queries the right way. Some people didn’t think it was technical enough, but I’ve also had some people tell me that the concepts I’m explaining are deep and profound. Brent: To me, that's a hallmark of a great explanation - when someone says, "But of course it has to work that way - how could it work any other way?  It seems so simple and logical."  Well, sure it does when it's explained correctly, but now pick up any number of thick SQL Server books and try to understand the Redundant Joins concept.  I guarantee it'll take more than 45 minutes. Rob: Some people in my audiences realise that, but definitely not everyone. There's only so much you can tell someone that something is profound. Generally it's something that they either have an epiphany on or not. I like to lull my audience into knowing what's going on, and do something that surprises them. Gain their trust, build a rapport, and then show them the deeper truth of what just happened. Brent: So you've learned your lesson about presentation scores, right?  From here on out, you're going to be dry, humorless, and all your presentations will consist of you reading bullet points off the screen. Rob: No Brent, I’m not. I'm also not going to suggest that most presentations at PASS are like that. No-one tries to present like that. There's a big space to occupy between what "dry and humourless" and me. My difference is to focus on the relationship I have with the crowd, rather than focussing on delivering the perfect session. I want to see people smiling and know they're relaxed. I think most presenters focus on the material, which is completely reasonable and safe. I remember once hearing someone talking about product creation. They talked about mediocrity. They said that one of the worst things that people can ever say about your product is that it’s “good”. What you want is for 10% of the world to love it enough to want to buy it. If 10% the world gave me a dollar, I’d have more money than I could ever use (assuming it wasn’t the SAME dollar they were giving me I guess). Brent: It's the Raving Fans theory.  It's better to have a small number of raving customers than a large number of almost-but-not-really customers who don't care that much about your product or service.  I know exactly how you feel - when I got survey feedback from my Quest video presentation when I was dressed up in a Richard Simmons costume, some of the attendees said I was unprofessional and distracting.  Some of the attendees couldn't get enough and Photoshopped all kinds of stuff into the screen captures.  On a whole, I probably didn't score that well, and I'm fine with that.  It sucks to look at the scores though - do those lower scores bother you? Rob: Of course they do. It hurts deeply. I open myself up and give presentations in a very personal way. All presenters do that, and we all feel the pain of negative feedback. I hate coming 146th & 162nd out of 185, but have to acknowledge that many sessions did worse still. Plus, once I feel the wounds have healed, I’ll be able to remember that there are people in the world that rave about my presentation style, and figure that people will hopefully talk about me. One day maybe those people that don’t like my presentation style will stay away and I might be able to score better. You don’t pay to hear country music if you prefer western... Lots of people find chili too spicy, but it’s still a popular food. Brent: But don’t you want to appeal to everyone? Rob: I do, but I don’t want to be lukewarm as in Revelation 3:16. I’d rather disgust and be discussed. Well, maybe not ‘disgust’, but I don’t want to conform. Conformity just isn’t the same any more. I’m not sure I’ve ever been one to do that. I try not to offend, but definitely like to be different. Brent: Count me among your raving fans, sir.  Where can we see you next? Rob: Considering I live in Adelaide in Australia, I’m not about to appear at anyone’s local SQL Saturday. I’m still trying to plan which events I’ll get to in 2011. I’ve submitted abstracts for TechEd North America, but won’t hold my breath.   • Best book for learning linux shell scripting?

    I normally works on Windows machines but on some occasions I do switch to development on linux. And my most recent project will be written entirely on a certain linix platforms (not the standard Apache/MySQL/PHP setup). So I thought it would pay to learn to write some linux automation script now. I can get around the system, start/stop services, compile/install stuffs fine. Those are probably basic drills for a programmer. But if, for example, I wanted to deploy a certain application automatically to a newly minted linux machine every month I'd love to know how to do it. So if I wanted to learn serious linux shell scripting, what book should I be reading? Thanks

    With upgrade of VMWare Player I suddenly found my Debian Lenny VM not getting IP address. Some DHCP issue maybe, I don't know. So I have to set it manually every boot in Player window, via: ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0 192.168.175.128 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I usually start up VM and then connect to it via SSH, so this procedure bothers me. Sure I can add it to startup script, but is there some special place to enter these values? Like, some config file or so?

  • Exporting 3DS Max animated biped character into Assimp

    I've been having some trouble with MD5 meshes exported from 3DS Max into my C++ program, using Assimp to import the model and its skeletal animation. If the models were rigged manually with bones, the export and animations work perfectly, but if they were rigged as a biped character, the animation hits a "deadly import error" and all the bones appear to get smooshed together into a big pile. This seems like it might just be a limitation of the MD5 exporter (we're currently using the one found here. Our plan is to try out a different MD5 exporter (this one), and if that still has problems, then try switching from MD5 to COLLADA. Our modeler won't be able to make time to try out these other exporters for a few days, so in the meantime I wanted to see if there were any better methods out there for getting biped rigged models from 3DS Max into our app via Assimp. Out of Assimp's supported formats, I need to figure out which will support the following: Skeletal animations Exportable from 3DS Max biped rigged models Failing that, an alternative would be a way to convert a biped character to its corresponding bones before exporting. We did find one script to do that, but it only seems meant as a starting point for modeling -- it doesn't carry over any hierarchy, skinning, or animation -- so it can't be used solely during export.

  • Running a scheduled task as SYSTEM with console window open

    I am auto creating scheduled tasks with this line within a batch windows script: schtasks /Create /RU SYSTEM /RP SYSTEM /TN startup-task-%%i /TR %SPEEDWAY_DIR%\%TARGET_DIR%%%i\%STARTUPFILE% /SC HOURLY /MO 1 /ST 17:%%i1:00 I wanted to avoid using specific user credentials and thus decided to use SYSTEM. Now, when checking in the taskmanagers process list or, even better, directly with the C:\> schtasks command itself, all is working well, the tasks are running as intended. However in this particular case I would like to have an open console window where I can see the log flying by. I know I could use C:\> tail -f thelogfile.log if I installed e.g. cygwin (on all machines) or some proprietary tools like Baretail on Windows. But since I only switch to these machines in case of trouble, I would prefer to start the scheduled task in such a way that every user immediately sees the log. Any chance? Thanks!

    My supervisor computer crashed last night, and I'm trying to help him out. He made an R script but when he tried to open it, it was empty. But for some reason the file is 7.9kb so it should not be empty i think... anyway when i tried to open it, Gedit gave this error: "The file you opened has some invalid characters. If you continue editing this file you could corrupt this document. You can also choose another character encoding and try again." and the options to encode the characters.   • Cannot create Java VM on OpenVZ

    I'm constantly encountering an error related to Java and certificates on my Ubuntu server running in OpenVZ when installing things from apt-get. I'm pretty sure it has to do with how Java allocates memory. I know the fail counter for privvmpages is very high, so the problem must be that Java is hitting this limit. I have read that the server VM will allocate a lot of memory up front to preempt performance issues, but that the client VM doesn't do this and might be better for what I'm doing. I messed with jvm.cfg to make the system go to the client VM, but get an error that it can't find the client VM. I have tried replacing the Java binary with a script calling Java with -Xms and -Xmx settings, and that solves the issue for when I call basic things from the command line, but not for when doing things like having apt-get configure certificates. I'm at a loss for what to try next. I need to get this working, but simply increasing privvmpages is not an available option. I have the actual error pasted below.     I was trying to make apache 2.2 reject connections if MaxClients was reached, to do this I found the directive ListenBacklog.To test it, I configured apache in the following way: <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 10 ListenBacklog 1 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> I've made a little script in JMeter to test this. The test launchs 50 users in 1 second (it requests a phpinfo page) but none is rejected, they all wait! I don't understand how this directive works... my operating system is Ubuntu.

  • Tokyo Tyrant ulog / update log management.

    I'm testing Tokyo Tyrant in a master-master setup and have found the ulog grows out of control and locks up the disk. At first I found the -ulim option useful and limited the logfile size, however it simply rolls over to a new log, leaving the old ones to clutter up the partition. I suppose I'll write a shell script that will delete ulogs older than X, once I find out how far back Tokyo Tyrant needs in the update log in order to failover. Does anyone have any experience with this Tokyo Tyrant? Do you have a feel (acknowledging that every install is different based on what is being stored) for the optimal ulog size vs how far back a Tokyo Tyrant instance needs to look in the ulog to assume master status?   • Running perfmon continuously with periodic reports

    I have a question very similar to this one, but I want to continuously run perfmon, during reboots and throughout the day. Further, I'd like to generate a perfmon report every 10 mins or so. The original question tells me how to run perfmon when the server is restarted, but I don't know how to make perfmon continuously run while throwing periodic files. I've tried setting it as a scheduled task that needs to be done every 10 mins, but this is too sloppy, and when the scheduled task kicks another instance, the current perfmon report writer crashes, and I get a garbage report. I've also tried writing a sloppy batch script that would fire off the task at scheduled intervals, but this is the same problem as the scheduled task. I'm sure I'm just missing something silly, but I don't see it. Ideas? (If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 locally, and I'm trying to set up the processes for boxes running Windows 2008.)

    The HTML markup of a web page includes the page's textual content, semantic and styling information, and, typically, several references to external resources. External resources are content that is part of web page, but are separate from the web page's markup - things like images, style sheets, script files, Flash videos, and so on. When a browser requests a web page it starts by downloading its HTML. Next, it scans the downloaded HTML for external resources and starts downloading those. A page with many external resources usually takes longer to completely load than a page with fewer external resources because there is an overhead associated with downloading each external resource. For starters, each external resource requires the browser to make an HTTP request to retrieve the resource. What's more, browsers have a limit as to how many HTTP requests they will make in parallel. For these reasons, a common technique for improving a page's load time is to consolidate external resources in a way to reduce the number of HTTP requests that must be made by the browser to load the page in its entirety.
