• How to debug a process using Visual Studio?

  If an application† crashes: i hit "Debug" and Visual Studio is my currently registered Just-In-Time (JIT) debugger: Visual Studio appears, but there's no way to debug anything: i do not see any disassembly. i do not see any symbols i do not see reconstructed source code from reflection i do not see any registers the call stack is empty Other JIT debugger products are able to show disassembly, but they are either command-line based (Debugging Tools for Windows), or do not support symbols (OllyDbg, Delphi). Additionally, my question is about debugging using Visual Studio, since i already have it installed, and is already my registered JIT. How do you debug a program using Visual Studio? Alternatively: has anyone written a graphical debugger that supports the Microsoft symbol server? † not, necessarily, written in Visual Studio Edit: Changes title to process rather than application, since the latter somehow implies "my application."

• Bluetooth server application accepting connections from mobile devices

  Hello, I'd like to develop a desktop application (on Windows, and preferably on .NET) that accepts bluetooth connections from mobile devices, that would then send commands to this application. I've never worked with bluetooth before. I've looked for open-source examples of such applications, but I had no luck. I've actually found on Microsoft a managed (.NET) wrapper for the bluetooth stack on Windows CE, but wasn't able to use it on my Windows 7. Do you know of any good texts discussing this topic? Any other source of information on the subject? Where should I start? Thanks.

• Why are $_POST variables getting escaped in PHP?

  When my PHP script receives data from an AJAX POST request, the $_POST variables are escaped. The really strange thing is that this only happens on my production server (running PHP 5.2.12 on Linux) and not on my local server (running PHP 5.3.1 on Windows). • .NET CF on Windows CE - problem with filtering system messages

  Hello, I'm trying to get every windows message that tells that the user has touched the screen. It works everywhere, except the button, when it is disabled. It seems that the application doesn't get any message when clicked on disabled control. I'm using OpenNetCF Application2 class for filtering messages: Application2.AddMessageFilter(Device.PowerManager); Application2.Run(new MainForm()); PowerManager class contains a following method (as required by IMessageFilter interface): public bool PreFilterMessage(ref Microsoft.WindowsCE.Forms.Message m) { log.DebugFormat("windows message {0} - 0x{0:X}", m.Msg); if (m.Msg == 0x0201 || m.Msg == 0x8001 || m.Msg == 0x0005) { return this.ResetPowerManager(); } return false; } in the log file there is no indication of a windows message when clicking on disabled button.   I am using asp.net 3.5 with C#. I need to do a database lookup when a user enters ProductID in txtProductID. I guess doing javascript is out of the question since this will have to be server side call.   I am using WebClient. This won't work because WebClient runs server side and therefore uses different session from the users. What is the client version in java script and jquery ? • Office Automation Libraries

  Some time ago I posted about a question about reading Excel files as a server process, to get around the tighter restrictions Microsoft have been applying on Office Automation. I now need to extend this, by finding methods/libraries to read other sorts of Office files in an automated way on a server. The applications I'm interested in are Word, Powerpoint, Project and to a lesser extent Word and Visio. I need to be able to support 97-2003 office files, and the newer open xml formats (e.g. xlsx, docx) at a very least. With regards to Word integration, I also need to be able to handle writing/reading RTF text. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be pleased to hear them. Thanks

  For those of us that have programmed enough I’m sure we have come across many different flavours of coding standards that you can use when it comes to programming. e.g. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229042.aspx You might derive your coding standards for the current company you work for or from the original author of the code you’re working on. Coding styles are often used for specific program languages and some styles in one coding language might not be considered appropriate for others. Of course some coding standards can be applied across many different program languages. My question is do you have any good advice/links yourselves to a set of coding standards that you would recommend to others, or best practices to follow? Thank you for your time. • New NCover 3.4.2 makes all my MSTest unit tests fail

  Yesterday, I decided to install the newest NCover version (3.4.2). However, when I ran it on my existing .ncover configuration file, the NCover output suddenly reported that all my MSTest tests failed. Of course those tests succeed when ran within Visual Studio. Because of this, NCover isn't able to determine any coverage. Somehow the old configuration doesn't seem to work with the new version. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be or how to solve it? Btw. Here is my ncover configuration.   What I am trying to accomplish is using jQuery UI dialog method from my own JavaScript source code file. I have this kind of links in the Site.Master <script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.4.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/jquery.validate.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/jquery-ui.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/Common.js" type="text/javascript"></script> Common.js is my own helper file. jQuery works fine there, but when I try to call for example: $(document).ready(function() { $("#dialog").dialog(); }); I'll get "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method" Any ideas why this happens? jQuery Works fine, but jQuery UI doesn't.

  I have IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003. I installed .Net 3.5 and 4 beta 2. "Normal" asp things are working (perfect). But when I try to navigate to my service (/myServer/MyService.svc) I got a 404. Page not found. To be exact, I got a 404 2 "Web service extension lockdown policy prevents this request." I used ServiceModelReg.exe /ia to make sure that the extension I known and I checked the configuration using: admin-Tools, iis, home-tab, configuration, executable-box, and there: extension: .svc, path: c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.210... verbs: all verbs So everything seems ok. But I still get a 404-2

• handle user logoff or machine shutdown requests on WindowsME

  I have to write a C# application that runs on WindowsME. Yes, I mean that Microsoft operating system that has been forgotten a long long time ago. My program needs no user interaction and as WindowsME doesn't support services, it will be a console application. Furthermore it will be used on more modern operating systems, where the user can choose whether to start it as console application or install it as a windows service. Now suppose the software is running on WinME and the user decides to logoff or shutdown the machine without a prior quit of my software. WinME complains about my program still running and asks if it should kill the process. Apart from the bad user experiance, this means that the application is not shut down properly. So I look for a way to be informed if the user logs off or wants to shutdown the machine to be able to perform a proper shutdown of my software first.

• ASP.NET MVC UpdateModel - fields vs properties??

  I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() did not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. SOLVED: MVC.NET does indeed handle inherited properties just fine. This turned out to have nothing to do with inheritance. My base class was implemented with public fields, not properties. Switching them to formal properties (adding {get; set; }) was all I needed. This has bitten me before, I keep wanting to use simple, public fields. I would argue that fields and properties are syntactically identical, and could be argued to be semantically equivalent, for the user of the class.

• System.UnauthorizedAccessException from Serial Port in VB.NET

  I am using VB.NET 2008 Express Edition to access Serial Port which is a USB to Serial port. Since this is removable, the app user can disconnect it at any time in app. I am getting an unhandled exception when I remove the USB Serial Port. After research, it seems like a known problem in .NET (even in 3.5) I am looking for some solution to get this done. • Does NInject work in medium trust hosting?

  I'm doing shared hosting with GoDaddy and I developed a sample ASP.NET MVC app using Castle Windsor and unfortunately, it didn't work in a medium trust setting. Specifically, I got this error: "[SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers"... etc. GoDaddy is sadly not flexible in their trust policy. I'm not tied to Windsor and would like to try another one that will work under Medium Trust. I'd actually like to use NInject, but I've read people having mixed success. The only one I've read that works with no problem is Microsoft's Unity. My question is, does NInject work in medium trust? If not, what are my options?

I read/heard about web farms, integration between different systems, load balancing ... etc. Therefore, I was wondering if there are ways for the individual developer to create an environment that simulates real world situations with minimal number of machines like: web farms & caching simulating many users accessing your website (Pressure tests?) Performance load balancing anything you think I should consider. By the way, I have a server machine and 1 PC. and I don't mind investing in tools and software. PS. • Why is this static routing not working ?

  Greeting gurus, I'm trying to develop a DHCP enforcement extension like Microsoft NAP. My trick to block dynamic-IP requesting machines (that don't meet certain policy) is to strip the default gateway (no default gateway) stated in the IP lease and set the lease subnet mask to 255.255.255.255. Now I need the blocked machines to be able to reach some specific locations (IPs) on the network. To allow for this, I'm including some static routes in the lease. For example, I'm including 10.10.10.11 via router 10.10.10.254 (the one to which the blocked machine that needs to access 10.10.10.11 is connected). Unfortunately, as soon as I set the default gateway to nothing, blocked machines cannot reach any of the added static routes. I also tried classless static routes. Any ideas ? any one knows how MS NAP actually do it ? Geeko

And yet extension methods form the foundation of Linq; in fact, Linq was the reason extension methods were created. Are there specific design criteria where using extension methods are perferred over inheritance or composition? Under what criteria are they discouraged?

• Collection wrapping a array is read-only. Possible to make it writeable without casting?

  I have a Collection<T> property that wraps a array like T[] array; public Collection<T> Items { get { return new Collection<T>(array); } } When I attempt to assign to the collection via: T variable; Items[i] = variable; I get a NotSupportedException because the colleciton's IsReadOnly property is true. Turns out that this is a design choice by Microsoft. Does anyone know a workaround that does NOT involve enumeration? It could be done if the underlying data is not an array but I enjoy the performance gains because the data is fixed length.

• My javascript to jQuery translation has a bug

  My guess is that this javascript just finds the div called divid and then uses it with the sendit function. var somevalue = 19; if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft") != -1) { thediv = window["divid"]; } else { thediv = document["divid"]; } thediv.sendit(somevalue); I would imagine in jQuery it would look something as simple as this: var somevalue = 19; $('divid').sendit(somevalue); But it's not working!! What could I be missing? I should say that it's in the middle of other javascript code, could that be a problem?

• Need some serious help with self join issue.

  Well as you may know, you cannot index a view with a self join. Well actually even two joins of the same table, even if it's not technically a self join. A couple of guys from microsoft came up with a work around. But it's so complicated I don't understand it!!! • Can't find .Net 2.0 XML Schema

  I'm currently setting up an application config for a WPF application written in .Net 4.0. The connection string in the app.config is encrypted like so: <connectionStrings configProtectionProvider="DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"> <EncryptedData> <CipherData> <CipherValue>CypherValue</CipherValue> </CipherData> </EncryptedData> </connectionStrings> To use the EncryptedData element I need to include the XMLNS "http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0". Attempting to include it produces an error as the schema cannot be found. Is there a way to include the schema or perhaps a different element I could use instead of EncryptedData?

• How can I determine file encodings on Windows / IIS ?

  From the answers to this question it appears there's a file somewhere on our server that's been saved with the wrong encoding. I've seen this happen before - most often when pasting from Word into Visual Studio, when "smart quotes" can interfere with Visual Studio's encoding settings when saving the file. Thing is - the problem I'm having involves 20-30 different script files, include files and so on (hey, that was how we kept it modular back in the day...) and I really don't want to open every one of them in Visual Studio and check the file encodings individually. Is there any way I can analyze a folder tree full of files and spit out a list of each filename along with the text encoding used to save the file? (Or - if encodings aren't clearly specified - work out what encoding Microsoft IIS thinks was used to save the file?)

• Why is Visual Studio 2008 slow with Firefox?

  I am using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. I've made an ASP.NET MVC site which has 6 CSS files and 6 Javascript files in the HEAD element in the Site.Master file. When I do F5 or CTRL-F5 in Explorer or Opera, the site displays instantly. When I run my site in Firefox, it takes a SECOND for each CSS and each Javascript file on LOCALHOST, i.e. 12 seconds to load on localhost. What might I be able to change in the Firefox settings so it is as fast as Opera and Explorer? NEW INFO: Uninstalled Firebug completely, no yslow, no other add-ons. When I take out the CSS and Javascript files, then Firefox is as fast as the other browsers. What could be taking it so long on a local connection?

• SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1 Stored Procedures

  I have been tasked with taking an existing WinForms application and modifying it to work in an "occasionally-connected" mode. This was to be achieved with SQL Server CE 3.5 on a user's laptop and sync the server and client either via SQL Server Merge Replication or utilizing Microsoft's Sync Framework. Currently, the application connects to our SQL Server and retrieves, inserts, updates data using stored procedures. I have read that SQL Server CE does not support stored procedures. Does this mean that all my stored procedures will need to be converted to straight SQL statements, either in my code or as a query inside a tableadapter? If this is true, what are my alternatives?
