Eee PC - Create USB Recovery Drive w/ Files Copied From Recovery Partition

I have an Eee PC 1005HAB whose hard disk has failed. I have no recovery CD/DVD, but I did previously back up the contents of the recovery partition, and would like to use them to create a bootable USB to reinstall the factory settings on the new hard drive. Since I simply copied all the files in the recovery partition, rather than hitting F9 during boot and running through the process to create a recovery disk or drive, how do I now use the files to create a bootable USB drive that will do the recovery? In the BIOS I have disabled boot booster and set external drives to the top of the boot priority, but simply copying all the recovery partion files to a usb doesn't allow it to be booted from. I've downloaded the HP utility for creating bootable USB drives and have tried using it to make the USB drive bootable, but I'm not sure what to do with the ghost image and utilities from the recovery partition to get the process to start properly. HP Storageworks 448 tape drive input/output error with Ubuntu

I'm trying to set a backup to tape of a machine using flexbackup. However any attempt to write to the tape drive (via either flexbackup or just tar) results in "/dev/st0: Input/output error" The machine seems to recognise the drive (HP Storageworks Ultrium 448) and that there's a tape in it and "mt status" seems to work... Acer Laptop does not power up after repairing DC power jack

I have an Acer travelmate laptop which (by mistake) I dropped on the floor with the power jack side down, with the charger connected and it broke the DC jack from the inside of the laptop. Then I unscrewed the laptop and soldered the DC jack back and then plugged it in and switched on the laptop without the batteries. It did switch on, that was before screwing everything back. Then after assembling the whole thing back it does not power up. So I disassembled it again and just took the part which contained the DC jack (My laptop is like in two parts one contains the power jack which then sits on some pins on the main PCB) to a technician and he said that if you had connected this to a motherboard then it would have burnt cause the soldering was not right. And then I checked with my laptop again by connecting everything the light (the charging light) comes on when I connect the power but it does not switch on. Right now nothing is connected to the laptop; no HD, CD ROM, RAM , Battery. Nothing! Even then it does not power up. Any suggestions?

Where can I find a useful Unicode fallback font for Mac OS X?

On every browser I've tried (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Omniweb), when I go to a web page containing somewhat less-common characters, I can't see the glyphs. For example, on the Wikipedia page for the Bengali Language, the very first line contains a string of squares; on Windows, I can see the Bengali writing. On Windows, as long as I have the Arial Unicode MS font installed, these characters fall back to that font and display properly. Mac OS X doesn't seem to ship with a font containing these Unicode characters (it has Arial Unicode MS, but it must be a subset of the Windows version because Bengali doesn't display in that font). I checked on my Snow Leopard DVD and I installed "Additional Fonts" from the Optional Installs package, but I'm still missing many languages. Is there any good, free font that contains a large collection of languages? I know creating fonts is difficult and time-consuming, but it seems like including at least one font like this with operating systems should be standard by now.

Good HDMI splitter/switch solution

I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter/switch do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

Second partition with Windows 7 unmountable

I'm using GRUB2 to dualboot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 some days ago and rewrote GRUB2 to cope with the dualboot. Everything went fine till yesterday - I could boot into both OS. Since this morning my laptop restarts every time I choose Windows 7 from the menu. Ubuntu is still working. As I tried to mount the partition with Windows 7 on Ubuntu it gave me return code 2, so this isn't working as well. I tried to reinstall GRUB2 to the MBR but it didn't help. I also tried to repair Windows 7 boot with it's install DVD, while trying so it showed me the following error: "Status: 0xc000000f Info: Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

Here are the features I am looking for : at least 500Go HDD capable of playing HD (1080p) supporting a good range of video and audio codecs support for subtitles including a DVB-T input (coax) and tuner composite video input 5.1 (or 7.1) analog audio output LAN (100M or Gigabit) fileserver (SMB or NFS) remote control possibly digital output (S/PDIF, TOSLINK, or other) no need for integrated DVD player no need for wifi The Ultio Pro looks nice (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/home-entertainment/d3fe). Recover Windows 7 from Linux Ubuntu?

I have two partitions and have Linux Ubuntu running on one partition and Windows 7 running on the other. Now when I try to boot from Windows 7, I get an error saying the /system32/winload.exe file is corrupted or deleted. Now I have Windows 7 files on my system but do not have the DVD, I have made USB bootable with Windows 7, but when I boot it with the USB stick, a blue screen is coming on with weird errors messages. Now I am trying to restore my Windows instance to a restore point where it can work normally. How can I do that in my situation?

Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P won't boot from USB drive with RAID enabled

I've got a Windows 7 installation image on my USB hard drive, which is set up to be bootable. I know it works because I've used it on several computers, and it works on the computer I'm trying to install as long as the RAID controller is disabled. However, when I enable the RAID controller and attempt to boot from the USB driver, it hangs for 30-60 seconds and then gives me the "disk boot failure, insert system disk" error like it can't find any OS. Just for laughs, I disabled the RAID controller again and it booted fine. I'm having separate, unrelated issues burning a dvd with the ISO, so I would prefer to get this working.

Netbook with Windows 7 Starter - Can I upgrade to Professional or Ultimate?

There are finally Windows 7 netbooks available, but they come with Windows 7 "Starter". Can I upgrade "Starter" to Windows 7 Ultimate using a normal retail DVD (and its new licence key)? What about special netbook drivers? Will they be replaced by an in-place upgrade? Does Windows 7 even have a way to upgrade to another edition or will I have to delete and re-install? If I delete and re-install, how will I get the special netbook drivers to install again? In my case it will probably be a HP netbook (HP Mini 110-1115SA). Can I just install the drivers from the HP CD that comes with the computer? Any ideas?

Installation stops with cmd.exe window on Laptop

I am installing W7 Ent on an LG R580. I am working with a valid ISO (installs perfect on other systems). During the installation, before the installation window, the process hangs, and I get a black, cmd.exe screen with the following: Select Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] with a prompt for: X:\windows\system32 My keyboard at that time only prints capital letters with '^' before each. Only thing that I am able to do is reboot. In the bios, I tried to disable USB Legacy ( thinking the problem is with my DVD ) - did not help.

How to backup boot information of a PC's Hard Disk?

I just installed Windows 7 on a partition of my hard disk and I'm planning to install Vista and Windows 8 on other partitions on the same disk, and maybe a few Linux distributions too. Before I install other Operating Systems, I would like to backup the boot information, just to make sure I can get back to Windows 7 in case anything goes wrong with the booting data. I already made a backup of the MBR using MBRFix but I'm wondering if I should save some Boot Sector from the Windows 7 partition? I noticed that Windows Vista install DVD has a "bootrec.exe" utility in the recovery console (Shift+F10) and it has some options to rewrite the boot sector of the partitions. Therefore I wonder if there is any utility (preferably on Hiren's BootCD) to backup/write the boot sector I would also like to know how to backup the boot data of a Linux installation

PSU requirement question for my PC setup.

I understand that sometimes there may be a situation where the PSU is way more than required but in this case of mine, I'm not too sure. Sometimes when I play games, my computer will crash and restarts itself, 10 mins into the game. Once I received a message that says something like the power is overheating or something like that. Ok, so I have a 500W PSU. I have: 1x Internal DVD writer 1x SATA 250GB HD 1x Nvidia 8500 GT 2GB RAM. As I'm planning to get an additional 250GB SATA HD, I wonder if I need to increase my PSU as well -- in full knowledge of the previous crashes experienced before. Should I upgrade my PSU to 650W perhaps, or is that excessive?

Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS on Hyper-V 2012

I have the following scenario: Hyper-V 2012 server core installation. On top of this i created a virtual machine on which i tried installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 which should not have any compatibility issues according to what Microsoft and Ubuntu are saying (although it is not officially supported). I start, run the installation and everything is ok, no problems detecting the network device or the hard drive (unlike debian which didn't even detect the hard drive). Once the installation is complete it asks me to reboot, it unmounts the "dvd drive" and reboots. Once it tries to start again i get the following error: Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device. It seems to not be booting up from the virtual hard drive. The hard drive is set up in SCSI mode, nothing mounted on the IDE controller (no iso image or anything else. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to solve this?

Windows boots to Black Screen of Death — Is my HDD faulty?

My wife's PC suddenly stopped booting up properly. It gets as far as the Windows 'loading' screen with the bar scrolling away, but that's as far as it gets for some time, then suddenly flashes up a BSoD barely long enough to see, then the display cuts out. We've got identical PCs, and after swapping components, I established that my PC suffers the same problem if I swap in the HDD. Even if I plug hers in as a second HDD on my machine, it still does the same thing, even though it's booting from mine. I can't even boot her machine from CD or DVD either, so I couldn't even use a recovery disc. I did manage to partially boot my PC into safe mode with the other HDD attached, and it got as far as loading 'crcdisk.sys' and froze. Anybody know what could be wrong with it, or at least how I can get the data off the disk? I'm assuming there's still data on the disk, given that it at least shows me the vista 'loading' screen.

How to determine if a device is SATA driven and will be affect by the Sandy Bridge Intel Issue?

Looking to buy a higher-end Windows 7 laptop, but I'm concerned about the issue with the Intel Sandy Bridge chipset. Otherwise, my price range covers laptops within the latest (Sandy Bridge) generation of the Core i7 family. I understand that there is an issue with SATA ports 2-5 and I use a Windows Home Server over a WiFi connection to share files and backup my PC. The other storage devices that I will use (less frequently) are the built-in DVD-RW disc drive and various devices hooked up to the USB ports (i.e. Android devices, iPod, etc.). The question: Will this setup be negatively impacted by the problem Intel reported about Sandy Bridge? Given this information, is it unwise to purchase a laptop that has this flaw? I really don't know how to determine whether a device is SATA driven or not, so hoping someone can shed some light on this too. Thanks!

Flash alternative for iBook Mac?

I have a old Apple iBook G4 that I decided to hook up to my main TV. I like the setup because I can surf the internet on my TV now. The only thing that I can't seem to do is watch Flash videos. Apparently Flash Player 10 doesn't play nice with the iBook's graphics card's GPU, leaving all the graphics processing to the CPU which is a disaster. Others suggested downgrading to Flash Player 9, I did that, and youtube worked fine, but Hulu (The main reason I wanted to hook it up to the TV in the first place) did not. Anyone know of a Flash alternative or a Flash 10 fix for the iBook? Or even a Hulu client that doesn't require Flash. How do I restore my system from a "Backup and Restore Center" backup?

The Windows (Vista) documentation and available online info is comprehensively vague. If I have a moderately brain dead system and want to restore it, and I have a "Backup and Restore Center" backup whose "delta" is not quite a week old (but with a "full backup" behind it), what steps do I go through to recover my box back to that backup point? It's totally unclear whether simply doing "restore all" from the (advanced) "Center" is sufficient, or do I need to first take the box back to day zero with the system restore DVD, et al? (Just editing this to get my correct ID associated with it.)

How can I install CentOS without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor?

I will be buying a new computer which will be used as a CentOS server. I will put it on my home LAN, and once it is set up, will access it only through SSH. I don't want to spend a lot of money (maybe $500), and I don't want to buy another monitor or keyboard just to through them away after the server is setup. My question is how do I access the computer without a keyboard and monitor when I install the operating system? For media, I can use either the DVD or an ISO on the USB, so am good there. But how do I see what I am doing and enter commands without a monitor or keyboard? I have a Window 7 laptop, an XP laptop, and a CentOS laptop. Can I use one of my laptops to act as the MMI (Man Machine Interface)? If not, what is the easiest and least expensive option? Thank you

Enabling AHCI in BIOS for SSD

I am trying to help a friend with a desktop upgrade. It is an old machine with an Intel DG31 main board. The board has 1 IDE port to which a DVD-ROM drive is connected, and 2 SATA ports. 1 SATA port had a hard drive with XP on it. I have made that the secondary drive now and wiped the OS as requested, so it is just for data. The new SSD has been installed but I read that for best results one must enable AHCI in the BIOS? So I checked and in the BIOS there is a SATA Mode setting with 2 options - Native and Legacy. I think Native means AHCI? After setting to Native, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium and all the latest drivers from Intel's website and all Windows Updates. Now when I check Device Manager I see this: Also Microsoft says HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci\Start and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV\Start should have value 0 for AHCI but I see that the value is 3 for both. So does this mean that Native mode is not AHCI? Or Windows 7 ignored BIOS setting and installed in IDE mode, maybe because both cables are present? Please help me enable AHCI on this system. Thanks!

Why would only the cpu fan not spin and no video displayed?

I just built a new computer and when I first powered it on I got a continuous beeping which according to the manual means a power failure. After moving the voltage switch to the left a little I was able to get the beeping to stop. Even after the stopping though the CPU fan doesn't spin, and there is no display on the monitor. All the other fans and lights come on in the computer though, the DVD drive is working and ejects the tray, and the hard drive sounds like it spins up. Has anyone seen this before and know what is wrong or what has failed?

Exchanged HDD in MacBook Pro - OSX installation disk shows prohibitory sign

I exchanged the HDD in my 2007 MacBook Pro and removed the dvd-drive because it was making terrible noise everytime I booted the MacBook. The new HDD is a Corsair Force F120 SATA SSD. Everytime I try to launch an OSX Lion installation disk or USB stick I get the grey prohibitory sign and the machine shuts down after a while. Since I didn't format the SSD beforehand there is still Windows 7 on it. It shows the white progress bar with the message "Windows is loading files" but never finishes it. I don't want Windows on that machine, just thought this fact may be important. Any ideas what is wrong?
