  When hosting a website I often notice that all of the following are defined under DNS: POP = mail.example.com SMTP = mail.example.com versus POP = pop.example.com SMTP = smtp.example.com Is it wise to use "mail.example.com" for both POP and SMTP when configuring a mail client? What is the difference between each of the two approaches? It seems to work fine (sends and receives mail as expected).

• How can I create an SPF record on my 1and1.com hosted domain?

  Emails from my domain (hosted at 1and1, and using Google Apps Premier edition) have sporadically been going to recipients' spam folders lately. I did some research, tested, and found out that I do not have an SPF record for my domain. According to this Google Support page, I need to create one. Following the steps on that page is easy, until I get to #3: Create a TXT record containing this text: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all I see no way to create a "TXT record". • Bad idea to display mail server info in public github project?

  I have the project for work that requires me to send e-mails to people using our work mail server. The server doesn't require authentication. Part of my project is using a Java-Helper I'm developing on GitHub. I don't know if I completely understand how it all works, but I'm guessing it would be a bad idea to have the server information available on GitHub for the world to see. Is this correct? After thought: I'm not going to put it in the Java-Helper because that wouldn't be helpful for anyone but me. but I'm still curious to know the answer to this question :) Thanks!

• Common practice in handling bounce message

  At now I mainly create a mail account separately (with different domain name [email protected]) and i add this mail as one return path. So the bounce message will only go to that mailbox and i parse the mail message one by one to check the failure receipent and the error code, then i convert the error code to the actual error message. Finally, the error message and the fail receipent's mail are post to my system and let my system user check the bounce information. Is it a common practice? Since i am worry about the mail other from bounce message have sent to my mail box, that would be a disaster if i parse them without filter them out, but how can i filter out between bounce message and normal mail? Thank you for any kind of help.

Is there a way to continue using Gmail while the domain points to the web host? I've never dealt with domain names and web hosts before, nor am I experienced with web development (will use a CMS).

  I am not sure if this is exactly the right section. What do you find the most efficient, clear and reachable use of e-mail addresses to use for the customer? I thought a standard 'sales, 'support' might work but it might look a little samey. Do users respond well when e-mails are replied by staff with named e-mail addresses such as [email protected] or a generic one? I am currently developing a small scale ecommerce website to gain some hands on insight into web retail. Any additional advice would be brilliant.

• Evolution and thunderbird sharing same mail data?

  Hi, I have been using Evolution for a quite long and it has downloaded around 1.6GBs of mails from gmail. I want to try thunderbird but I dont want to re download everything again. Is that possible to have both clients sharing same data? I'll make sure I don't use both at the same time if that matters. I'll move to thunderbird fully if I'm happy with it. Problems I face with evolution is that I have to have the GUI running always if I want to get instant alerts and send mail immediately. Also it loads the messages slow and even after I move to the next mail, it slowly downloads all the linked images before moving on.

• SMTP server to deliver mail to Rails app, how?

  all, this is my first question and I hope I chose the right place to post it. Here's what I need help with: I've been looking for this all day and I'm having a hard time finding a SMTP mail server that would fit the following criteria: lightweight, does one thing and does it good is able to route and deliver local mail to a Rails application The second point could be accomplished in any number of ways. I'm running a VPS, so I have full freedom in how to implement this. It could, for example, put messages straight in the db, pipe them to a helper program that would then process them accordingly or also save messages in a mbox file and run a script after every received message. I'm building a small site so the traffic is not going to be a problem. If there are alternative ways to deliver messages to a Rails app, I'd gladly hear about them. Thank you. EDIT: After long searching, I think I've found what I was looking for. Exim is a mail server that can deliver local mail to pipes. Also, Rails 3 and ActionMailer can make it really easy to process the incoming mail. • X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

  It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem?   I just installed 12.04 and when clicking mailto: links Thunderbird opens. I want Gmail to open in the browser that the mailto: link is clicked. So if I am in Firefox and click a mailto: link a new FF tab opens with Gmailloaded. And if I am in Chrome and click a mailto: link then a new Chrome tab opens up with Gmail loaded. Is there a way to do this via some script? Or would I need to set this in some system settings?

  Many years ago we purchased a domain from Yahoo. Now our website is hosted on Amazon EC2. The output of an SPF checking tool (http://www.kitterman.com/getspf2.py) says SPF records are primarily published in DNS as TXT records. The TXT records found for your domain are: i=182&m=bizmail-mx2-p9 SPF records should also be published in DNS as type SPF records. No type SPF records found. Checking to see if there is a valid SPF record. No valid SPF record found of either type TXT or type SPF. Where do I get access to these values? Can somebody speculate, where can I find an interface, or a configuration file to fill in the missing fields?

• What does a media server need?

  I want to buy a new PC to be used as a media server that streams HD movies, music to any wireless device on my network (laptop, desktop, TV, etc.). I was wondering about the PC hardware's specifications that I need to have so that it can work just fine? (It will be wireless) Is there any tutorial showing how it could be done? And the security - how can I secure it? As well as I need it to to host my emails. I mean I have many emails. And sometimes I'm using desktop, sometimes laptop.. so is it possible to make the server store a copy of my emails, attachments, all sent items (whether they were from desktop or laptop)?

My php script prepare contents of each category, according to user preference my script merge those contents for each user. so every user can get what category they want. Problem is I want to send 340+ mails per hour and dreamhost dont allow. What do you suggest? I think to a service like mailchimp but I couldnt find that scenario, do they support category & content etc. Can I use smtp in dreamhost?

• Moving domain currently on Google Apps to my own machines

  I own a domain which currently uses Google Apps (it was free back then). Due to recent events I have decided I want to move everything right where I can control the data, which basically means I have the idea of either using a dyndns solution and have at home my own mail server or, better, use an hosted machine to retrieve the mail and the move it via mua to a local machine. My problem is that I know basically next to nothing about DNS and stuff, while I have installed mail servers before. :) [I simply never had the need to work with DNS...] I'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction: what do I need to do to: terminate the Google Apps management of the domain setup dns entries to that mail goes to the new server instead of Google Apps Additionally: if I decide to go the "hosted route" and I put up a machine via a supercheap hosting seller (say, the cheapest OVH one is a few euros a month), how can I tell the world that that machine is the mail server? Of course I would be wise to do a full backup of the mail on Google Apps, and that's easy enough to do by imap (right?).

• Problems using PHP on a Plesk Windows dedicated server

  I'm having a few issues with my dedicated Windows server that has a Plesk panel: 1.) I can't send e-mail via PHP's mail() function, it always returns the following error: SMTP server response: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local Which setting should I alter in order to enable sending mail? 2.) The exec() and passthru() PHP functions don't work; their outputs are blank even when I try to run simple commands such as dir. Is there an option that I can toggle in the control panel to enable this functionality?

• Does it matter that the TTL is higher than I've been told?

  Ok, so the title isn't very descriptive, I know. Basically, I'm trying to configure Outlook.com to use my custom domain! I've followed the steps and made the account etc. and now I have the DNS settings to configure from Windows Live. I added the MX Entries and everything last night but Windows Live is still saying I need to prove my ownership of the domain. The only thing I can think of that I had to use a differrent TTL to the one provided because my web hoster will only allow a minimum of four hours, whereas Windows Live told me to configure the TTL as one hour. Would that stop anything? By the way, my web hoster is JustHost (Shared Hosting)

  I have a massive list of users who registered for accounts and opted into a mailing list on my web site and I am interested in sending out a weekly newsletter. How should I go about doing this. I tried sending it out through my host server, but I received a notice stating that if I did it again they would kick me off the server. Are there any good companies that are designed for this type of thing? I need to find a company that will support this and show me some sort of report about how many emails get opened, deleted, opened then deleted, etc. Any recommendations?

• GMail API for a small app (Rails? Javascript? PHP?)

  I want to create an app that accesses the GMail API, but I'm finding that it isn't as simple as I thought it might be. I'm hoping somebody in the community here might have some experience working with one of these API's and could not only recommend the right solution, but also show me to some tutorials or examples that could help me get up and running. Here are some of the requirements of this app: Preferably in Rails or Javascript or even PHP. I am open to other technologies as well, but hope they'd be easy to implement. Connects to gmail via Oauth Can read who emails have been sent to and received from. Basically would like to perform some analytics on who emails are sent to, when and how frequently. I've read that one reason why this isn't easy, and why there isn't an official javascript API provided by gmail, is that google is concerned it's going to make their service less performant for their users.

• Emailing Service: To or Bcc?

  I'm busy coding a reusable e-mail service for my company. The e-mail service will be doing quite a few things via injection through the strategy pattern (such as handling e-mail send rate throttling, switching between Smtp and AmazonSES or Google AppEngine for e-mail clients when daily quotas are exceeded, send statistics tracking (mostly because it is neccessary in order to stay within quotas) to name a few). Because e-mail sending will need to be throttled and other limitations exist (ex. max recipient quota on AmazonSES limiting recipients to 50 per send), the e-mails typically need to be broken up. From your experience, would it be better to send bulk (multiple recipients per e-mail) or a single e-mail per recipient? The implications of the above would be to send to a 1000 recipients, with a limit of 50 per send, you would send 20 e-mails using BCC in a newsletter scenario. When sending an e-mail per recipient, it would send 1000 e-mails. E-mail sending is asynchronous (due to inherit latency when sending, it's typically only possible to send 5 e-mails per second unless you are using multiple client asynchronously). Edit Just for full disclosure, this service won't be used by or sold to spammers and will as far as possible automatically comply with national and international laws. • Is there a way to forward emails associated with a domain without a mail server?

  A client owns example1.com but wants to also purchase example2.com and have it point to their original site at example1.com. No problem there. But they also want any emails going to example2.com to be forwarded to their counter parts at example1.com Eg: if someone emails [email protected] it will be forwarded to [email protected] They only way I can think of doing this at the moment is to set up host for example2.com and then set up mail forwarders in cpanel. But this seems a bit excessive and costly. Does anyone know another, cheaper way of doing this?

  I have postfix configured to receive mail for multiple domains. The primary domain goes through a standard postfix setup, whereas a secondary domain is handed by a /etc/postfix/virtual.db file which maps addresses for the secondary domain to other unix users. Incoming mail works perfectly, but when I send mail as users on the secondary domain, the mail receiver still sees it as coming from [unix username]@[primarydomain].net. Can anyone help me figure out how to configure the virtual postfix domain to send mail through the same domain it receives it as?

• Exim log and send all mail for a given domain through another server

  I administer a handful of shared web hosting servers. Recently, Yahoo has been deprioritizing/greylising all email sent from these servers. I am getting the dereaded 421 4.7.0 [TS02] Messages from my.ip.address temporarily deferred message from Yahoo and their postmaster has been unresponsive. I am unable to find any way to set up a feedback loop like AOL has for my IP address -- I did find a way to set up a feedback loop for a given domain, but we host hundreds of domains, and don't have the time to set up that many feedback loops. So what I'd like to do is twofold: Configure Exim to send all email destined to an @yahoo.com address to a relay, a new server which has an IP that yahoo is not blocking. Configure Exim (or maybe the relay) to log all emails sent to @yahoo.com, so I can review them and, in case one of my uses is violating ToS and sending SPAM to yahoo users, take the appropriate action. How could I accomplish these? Or, does anyone have any other advice for how to get mail to flow through Yahoo and ensure that any email generating complaints is brought to my attention? (For what it's worth, these servers are not listed on any major blacklists)

• When using procmail with maildir, it returns error with code I found

  I'm not an expert at procmail, but I have this code: DROPPRIVS=yes DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/ :0 * ? /usr/bin/test -d $DEFAULT || /bin/mkdir $DEFAULT { } :0 E { # Bail out if directory could not be created EXITCODE=127 HOST=bail.out } MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir/ But, when the directory already exists, sometimes it will send a return email with this error: 554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 127. The email still gets delivered, mind you, but it sends back an error code. I fixed this temporarily by commenting out the EXITCODE and HOST lines, but I'd like to know if there is a better solution. I found this block of code in multiple places across the net, but couldn't really find why this error was coming back to me. It seems to happen when I send an email to a local user, sometimes the user has a .forward file to send it on to other users, sometimes not, but the result has been the same. I also tried removing DROPPRIVS, just in case it was messing up the forwarding, but it did not seem to affect it. Is the line starting with * ? /usr/bin/test a problem? The * signifies a regex, but the ? makes it return an integer value, correct? What is the integer being matched against? Or is it just comparing the integer return value? Thanks for the help.
