• Create a Windows Image for Deployment

  In my company we have 8 laptops that we use to deploy on the field. These machines get assigned to a user for a certain time and run Windows Vista. All the machines are the same model. After the machine is returned, it is company policy to completely format the machine and go back to a predetermined configuration. Right now, what we do is we use the recovery utility in the laptop (we are a small shop so we use the OEM Windows license that the laptops come with) and manually uninstall and change the configuration in order to bring it to our baseline config. I know that there are ways to create an image that gets copied to the hard drive with a specific configuration and with specific software installed (thats what OEMs do right?). I'm looking for a tool or a tutorial or something that explains as simply as possible how to create such an image. Thanks a lot

• Windows Update can't install Windows Vista SP1

  If you install Windows Vista RTM and run Windows Update, many updates are offered and will successfully install. Once all other updates are installed, Windows Vista service pack 1 is offered. When you attempt to install Windows Vista service pack 1, the service pack installation wizard appears, presenting the license agreement and so on. However, shortly after the installation starts the wizard disappears. Windows Update says that the update was installed successfully. However, service pack 1 is not in fact installed, and will be detected as needed again on the next update check. Repeat ad nauseum. On checking the Windows Update log, error 0x80190194 appears near the beginning of an update check, associated with the URL http://update.microsoft.com/vista/windowsupdate/redir/vistawuredir.cab. Why won't service pack 1 install properly and how do I fix it?

• Activate Windows XP in VMWare?

  Running Windows XP in VMWare, how should activation be handled? Last time I did this, I do not remember having to do any activation. Now it is asking me to activate Windows XP. Am I suppose to buy and use a real WinXP key? What is this about a "Windows XP Mode" I'm hearing about that you can enable in VMware to activate it? The availability of Windows XP Mode is equivalent to a free license to Windows XP operating system. My host machine runs Win7. My goal is to get WinXP running in VMWare the simplest way, but this activation is giving me issues (such as that WinXP doesn't seem to be sold anymore). I Googled around and found that VMWare has a xpmode.enabled = "TRUE" feature which instantly activates Windows XP (with limits, like only once), but I do not know anything about it or how to use it.

• BackupExec Hyper-V availability (within BackupExec 2010 or seperate?)

  Hi, I have downloaded the trial of Symantec BackupExec 2010 but I am a little confused: The agent for Hyper-V is available and for sale ($1800 or something), but the trial of BackupExec tells me i can install the agents I need from the installer. Can I install a full version of BackupExec, providing I have the license, but also install a full version of the Hyper-V agent? Or do I have to download/buy this seperately? Is a trial version available for the agents? As is probably obvious from this thread, I am a bit confused about the business model of this product. Please clarify. Thanks

  I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

• Light Voip and IM server for small teams

  So I have a small group that would need a self hosted Im/voip and possibly video conferencing solution. My goal is for a small group of people (no more than 40) to be able to collaborate within a local area network. I need something that is self hosted, so unfortunately outside solutions like Skype and hosted Lync would not work. I'm looking for something that would allow both one on one, and group communication, so and IRC server would not work. I'm hopefully looking for something that does not require multiple servers, or is too complex to set up. As a student, I have a license of Lync 2013, but setting that up on a single server without active directory is practically impossible. Would Lync 2010 be easier to do on a single server? Are there any other good solutions? Thanks

  I have a client that is currently managing around 5000+ contacts via Outlook. There is also a BES Express installation in place. There are a couple problems. First, there is a corrupt contact in there somewhere that is preventing either a cabled or over the air sync of the complete list to a blackberry. The second, is that it just seems to be getting a bit unruly. They currently have a license for ACT, which I'm trying to get them to move into, but at what number does the contact list need to be at to migrate away from using Outlook/Exchange and into a real CRM solution?

• Difficulty in running Tomcat v7.0 with Eclipse Juno

  I get the following error when I run my JSP file in Eclipse-Juno with Tomcat v7: 'starting Tomcat v7.0 server at localhost' has encountered a problem. Port 8080 required by Tomcat v7.0 server at localhost is already in use. The server may already be running in another process, or a system process may be using the port. To start this server you will need to stop the other process or change the port number(s). I have Oracle 10g installed in my System. When I type "http://localhost:8080" it opens the Oracle 10g license agreement so I think Oracle 10g is already running in that port. To change the port of Tomcat I tried Google, which said to change the port in the "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache Tomcat 7.0.14\conf\httpd.conf" file But at "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache Tomcat 7.0.14\conf" there was no httpd.conf file. I only have "catalina.policy,catalina.properties,context,logging.properties,server,tomcat-users,web" files in that conf folder. I use windows XP.

• SQL 2008 Mirroring, how to failover from the mirror database?

  I have configured a database mirroring setup in SQL 2008 using the High-safety, Synchronous mode, without automatic failover. I don't have a Witness instance. Regarding high availability, I understand Mirroring is a better strategy than Log Shipping (faster and smoother failover), and cheaper than Clustering (because of license and hardware costs). According to the MS docs, to do the failover you need to access to the Principal database and in the "Mirror" options click the "Failover" button. But I want to do this from the Mirror database, because what would be the benefit as all this setup is being done in case the Principal server knocks down? Evidently I am missing something. If Mirroring is not a solution for server downtime (as would be Clustering, if I understand correctly), then which practical (i.e. real world examples) cases would benefit from Mirroring for high-availability purposes? • Can you use a USB dongle inside a VMWare ESX Virual Machine?

  Howdy, I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible.   I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. What do? I googled stuff but because the keywords are too broad I couldn't find a useful tool DAZ doesn't work, activation button doesn't show up. When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error I used sfc /scannow Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved.   I learned recently (on superuser) that Mac OS X uses the bash shell. I also know that OS X has a UNIX core. I was searching for information about OS X and Open Source on google, but what I found was this site: http://www.opensource.apple.com/ Which seems to include the source code for OS X. For instance, one of the links reads: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Source So, is OS X open source? There's an Apple Public Source License, but I'm bad at understanding legalese. Update Extra/Bonus question: Besides the kernel, What about the various other pieces? The X server? Window Manager? File explorer? etc. What's open source and what's not?

Here's what makes me wonder: They seem to go to great pains not to mention that they are based on redhat in the FAQ they mention a policy about using the redhat trademark, but the link no longer exists. When installing it it's not hard to find a lot of redhat code. I don't bother much with the linux world anymore but I had a client that was wondering about it as his auditors picked up on it and wanted to know where his license was.

  Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool.   I run (K)Ubuntu 9.10 as my main operating system, but I still have a valid XP license, so I've been running Windows XP as a guest operating system with Virtualbox 3.10. I cannot get Itunes (running under Windows XP) to detect the presence of my Iphone. I found this link: http://blog.rootshell.be/2009/01/15/iphone-itunes-virtualbox/ which explains how to get this Itunes-in-XP-in-Virtualbox-under-Ubuntu configuration to work, but it involves editing the file /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh which apparently does not exist in Ubuntu 9.10. Does anyone know how get Itunes in XP running as a guest in Ubuntu 9.10 to detect and sync with an Iphone?

I am looking to release the finished product under the CC 3.0 BY license, but the Kernel is released under the GPL, which would not allow this if the code is in text format. However, since it will be in low-resolution, incredibly incomplete, non-usable, non-compilable, non-editable (at least without lots of finagling) format, would this constitute fair use or find another loophole to slip through?   At my workplace, everyone uses VMware Player (and some people have licenses for Workstation). We frequently share VMs to save time on development setup. However, I would really like to take advantage of the Snapshot feature in VirtualBox since I am unable to acquire a license for Workstation. I have read that VirtualBox has no issues reading VMWare VMs (including VMs with snapshots). However, I'm worried about how compatible things are the other way. In VirtualBox, I open up a VM created in VMware and create multiple snapshots. Can the resulting files be opened in VMware?

• How can I set a Windows user environment variable that takes effect for the current session?

  I am trying to set a Windows user environment variable and then launch an application via either batch file or a script. However, the environment variable is not set to the appropriate value until after the user logs off and logs back on. (I think a more accurate description would be that the new value is not available to the app until after the next logon.) Is there any way to set a variable in the user's environment so that it's immediately available? I'm doing this because this program's functionality can be controlled by environment variables, and users will need different functionality at different times. Because of license constraints I need to set this dynamically, if possible. Thanks, Graham

  We will be implementing a public-facing website in SharePoint 2010 and I have a few questions regarding licensing: Is there any (relatively) reliable pricing information available for SharePoint 2010? What about rumors? What edition of SharePoint 2010 would be appropriate for a publicly facing website (in 2007, you needed Enterprise for this, but it seems that WCM functionality is included in Standard in 2010)? What would be a reasonable number to budget for SharePoint 2010 licensing for a publicly facing website? Note: I have tried asking Microsoft directly. Unless you are a volume license customer, they direct you to a reseller (like CDW). Unfortunately, none of the resellers have the pricing for 2010 yet. The sku isn't even in their system. I was able to get in touch with the Microsoft Pre-Sales team and they confirmed that the price list will for 2010 will be published on May 3rd (or thereabouts), but they weren't able to give me a price.
