• using asp.net membership provider in a dll

  I've used Membership Providers in web apps over the last several years. I now have a new "request" for an internal project at work. They would like a service (not a web service) to do a quick authenticate against. Basically, exposing the ValidateUser(UserName, Password) method... I am building this in a DLL that will sit with our internal web site. What is the best approach to make this work? The DLL will not reference the web app and the web app will reference the DLL. How do I make the DLL aware of the Membership Provider? TIA PS: If this has been answered elsewhere please direct me to that... EDIT: I found an article on using ASP.NET Membership with WinForms and/or WPF applications. Unfortunately, these depend on an app.config file. A DLL appears to not use the app.config once published.   I want to group the common methods in one file and use it. For example, login to a page using selenium may be used in multiple times. Define that in class A and call it in class B. • odd behavior with C# ftp client class

  I found an ftp client class in c# over a year ago and have been using it in a process that uploads files on a nightly basis. A few days ago we started having a problem where it would time out. I'm not well versed in this so I'm not sure why it's doing this. When the program starts uploading a file it checks to see if it's logged in and if not, it calls the login method. In that method is this block of code. if (this.resultCode != 230) { this.sendCommand("PASS " + password); if (!(this.resultCode == 230 || this.resultCode == 202)) { this.cleanup(); throw new FtpException(this.result.Substring(4)); } } On the line that says this.sendCommand("PASS"... it goes into this code. private void sendCommand(String command) { if (this.verboseDebugging) Debug.WriteLine(command, "FtpClient"); Byte[] cmdBytes = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes((command + "\r\n").ToCharArray()); clientSocket.Send(cmdBytes, cmdBytes.Length, 0); this.readResponse(); } If I let the program run, it times out. However if I step through it into the sendCommand method it executes fine. Does anyone know why it would work fine when I step through it? Nothing on our end has changed and I've been told nothing on the client's end has changed so I'm stumped. Thanks.

  Using the following to load images base on two ids one is the and bookid and the out is the client. My folder structures is this. root path = flipbooks subfolders under flipbooks are books and clients in subfolder books I have and .net page title tablet. the tablet code behind checks the bookid of client and render a the tablet page with images in a flipbook fashion. because we have over 15000 records and flipbooks already created and stored in the database. I don't move the client folder under the books subfolders. I need the code below to get to the client subfolder in the query string and help to change this would be helpful. The result now is http://www.somewebsite.com/books/client/images/someimage1.jpg[^] I need the results to be http://www.somewebsite.com/client/images/someimage1.jpg[^]. I tried moving the tablet.aspx file to the root flipbooks and it works but i have provide a user name and password each time. This need to be access by the public and my root is protected. Don't want to have to change permission. • How should I handle expected errors? eg. "username already exists"

  I am struggling to understand how I should design the error handling parts of my code. I recently asked a similar question about how I should go about returning server error codes to the user, eg. 404 errors. I learnt that I should handle the error from within the current part of the application; seem's simple enough. However, what should I do when I can't handle the error from the current link in the chain? For example, I may have a class that is used to manage authentication. One of it's methods could be createUser($username, $password). Within that function, I need to determine if the username already exists. If this is true, how should I alert the calling code about this? Returning null instead of a user object is one way. But how do I then know what caused the error? How should I handle errors in such a way that calling code can easily find out what caused the error? Is there a design pattern commonly used for this kind of situation?

  I have a subclass of UITableView and in it I want to generate number of labels that share the same properties (font, textColor, backgroundColor, etc.). What would be best the best approach here? I fee like I have two options: Create a subclass of UILabel for the default label type. • MVC for a desktop application, connection a view/controller pair with another one

  Hello. I've had mostly experience with "server-side" mvc frameworks very popular in different languages like ASP.NET MVC or Zend Framework for php, Spring for Java etc. Some of them are also possible to use for desktop applications development but I never tried that. I fully understand that design patterns should not limit implementation, they should generally provide ideas and common rules that can be differently implemented. Now I'm playing with one of those mvc frameworks for usual Desktop Applications development (it does not have many tutorials or a decent quickstart) and I have some questions regarding to the mvc paradigm. Here is one of them: What are common ways to link different views / controllers? If I click a button, special controller for that button dispatches the event that is generated, does something with the model, changes view state. But what if I need to interact with another view? Like, when I click on a button, it changes a model, but also I need to open another window or change state of another window (hiding a button on another window let's say...), without changing actually the model. What are common ways here to address this? Should my first controller generate an event for the second controller (or second view)? Or should the second controller be handling events from first view? Some links or examples for any languages/frameworks would be really helpful, thanks!

• Exporting database from external server (without SSH access)

  Our current website is hosted by the design agency who originally built the website, however we are bringing the development of the website in house therefore need to export the database from their server and import it to ours. We have FTP and phpMyAdmin access but don't have SSH access to the server. I was hoping to run a PHP script that would mysql dump the database, compress it and then copy it across to our server using scp: $backupFile = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/backup' . date("Y-m-d-H-i-s") . Also, I was hoping to run it from the browser as I don't have command line access on the hosting server, however it didn't work, no errors produced though. Can you anyone recommend how I can export from the server that I don't have SSH access to and import to my server? Thanks

The issue is that while my db model ends up having a correct EftInterfaces table, with a FK to Provider_Id, the BusinessUnits table has a FK to EftInterface_Id. But, a BusinessUnit can be included in more than one EftInterface. I need a many to many relationship. A BusinessUnit can be part of many EftInterfaces, and an EftInterface can contain many BusinessUnits. How can I get CodeFirst to generate the many-to-many table?

• MD5CryptoServiceProvider ComputeHash Issues between VS 2003 and VS 2008

  I have a database application that generates a MD5 hash and compares the hash value to a value in our DB (SQL 2K). The original application was written in Visual Studio 2003 and a deployed version has been working for years. Recently, some new machines on the .NET framework 3.5 have been having unrelated issues with our runtime. This has forced us to port our code path from Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2008. Since that time the hash produced by the code is different than the values in the database. The original call to the function posted in code is: RemoveInvalidPasswordCharactersFromHashedPassword(Text_Scrub(GenerateMD5Hash(strPSW))) I am looking for expert guidance as to whether or not the MD5 methods have changed since VS 2K3 (causing this point of failure), or where other possible problems may be originating from. I realize this may not be the best method to hash, but utimately any changes to the MD5 code would force us to change some 300 values in our DB table and would cost us a lot of time. In addition, I am trying to avoid having to redeploy all of the functioning versions of this application. I am more than happy to post other code including the RemoveInvalidPasswordCharactersFromHashedPassword function, or our Text_Scrub if it is necessary to recieve appropriate feedback. • Global name not defined error in Django/Python trying to set foreignkey

  Summary: I define a method createPage within a file called PageTree.py that takes a Source model object and a string. The method tries to generate a Page model object. It tries to set the Page model object's foreignkey to refer to the Source model object which was passed in. This throws a NameError exception! I'm trying to represent a website which is structured like a tree. I define the Django models Page and Source, Page representing a node on the tree and Source representing the contents of the page. NameError: global name 'source' is not defined When I type in the function definition for createPage into the shell by hand, the call works without error. This is driving me bonkers and help is appreciated.

• Recursive Iterators

  I am having some trouble making an iterator that can traverse the following type of data structure. I have a class called Expression, which has one data member, a List<object>. This list can have any number of children, and some of those children might be other Expression objects. I want to traverse this structure, and print out every non-list object (but I do want to print out the elements of the list of course), but before entering a list, I want to return "begin nest" and after I just exited a list, I want to return "end nest". I was able to do this if I ignored the class wherever possible, and just had List<object> objects with List<object> items if I wanted a subExpression, but I would rather do away with this, and instead have an Expressions as the sublists (it would make it easier to do operations on the object. I am aware that I could use extension methods on the List<object> but it would not be appropriate (who wants an Evaluate method on their list that takes no arguments?). The code that I used to generate the origonal iterator (that works) is: public IEnumerator GetEnumerator(){ return theIterator(expr).GetEnumerator(); } private IEnumerable theIterator(object root) { if ((root is List<object>)){ yield return " begin nest "; foreach (var item in (List<object>)root){ foreach (var item2 in theIterator(item)){ yield return item2; } } yield return " end nest "; } else yield return root; } A type swap of List<object> for expression did not work, and lead to a stackOverflow error.   How do i introduce validation before remote_form_for submits? I have javascript function called validateForm(). I am able to call it before the AJAX request process. I tried to use return false and event.preventDefault. But there seems to be no effect. Is this possible? How should I prevent this?

Collection type in Web Service configuration is System.Array. What could be the reason for such upredictable behavior? Edited: I found the way how I can reproduce this behavior.
