• Spell checker software

  Hello Guys, I have been assigned a task to find a decent spell checker (UK English) preferably the free one for a project that we are doing. I have looked at Google AJAX API for this. The project contains some young person's (kids less than 18 years old) data which shouldn't allow exposing or storing outside the application boundaries. Google logs the data for research purpose that means Google owns the data whatever we send over the wire through Google API. Is this right? I fired an email to Google regarding the privacy of data and storage but they haven't come back. If you have some knowledge regarding this please share with me. At this point our servers might not have access to external entities that means we might not be able to use Web API for this over the wire. But it may change in the future. That means I have to find out some spell checker alternatives that can sit in our environment and do the job or an external APIs. Would you mind share your findings and knowledge in this regard. I would prefer free services but never know if you have some cracking spell checker for a few quid’s then I don't mind recommending to the project board. • IIS as proxy to rails/mongrel - force a proxied host to generate REMOTE_USER

  Hello -- Using Application Request Routing I have IIS 7.5 set up as a reverse proxy to a Mongrel service which is serving a rails app. IIS is set up to use Windows Auth and is working but I cannot access the REMOTE_USER variable in the rails app to get at current user's identity. I have inspected the request object in rails and I don't have any other variables like LOGON_USER, HTTP_REMOTE_USER, AUTH_USER, etc. I am trying to find a way to inject the REMOTE_USER variable into Mongrel's server variables. This post describes what I am looking for using mod_rewrite on Apache but I am having trouble recreating this rule for iis. this is the rewrite rule from the post mentioned above for Apache RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{LA-U:REMOTE_USER} (.+) RewriteRule . - [E=RU:%1] Header add X-Forwarded-User %{RU}e I tried reproducing the rule in IIS and got a URL Rewrite Module error ("The condition's expression "%{LA-U:REMOTE_USER}" is invalid."). I know I'm probably using Apache syntax where IIS syntax is needed but am not sure how to proceed at this point. Any help greatly appreciated.

• Java NIO (Netty): How does Encryption or GZIPping work in theory (with filters)

  Hello Experts, i would be very thankfull if you can explain to me, how in theory the "Interceptor/Filter" Pattern in ByteStreams (over Sockets/Channels) work (in Asynchronous IO with netty) in regard to encryption or compression of data. Given I have a Filter that does GZIPPING. How is this internally implemented? Does the Filter "collect" so many bytes form the channel, that this is a usefull number of bytes that can then be en/decoded? What is in general the minimal "blocksize(data to encode/decode in a chunk)" of socket based gzipping? Does this "blocksize" have to be negotiated in advance between server and client? What happens if the client does not send enough data to "fill" the blocksize (due to a network conquestion) but does not close the connection. Does this mean the other side will simply wait until it gets enough bytes to decode or until a timeout occoures...How is the Filter pattern the applied? The compression filter will de/compress the blocksize of bytes and then store them again in the same buffer would (in the case of netty) i normally be using the ChannelHanlderContext to pass the de/encoded data to the next filter?... Any explanations/links/tutorials (for beginners;-) will be very much appreciated to help me understand how for example encryption/compressing are implemented in socket based communication with filters/interceptor pattern. thank you very much tom

• Cannot delete an image file that is shown in a listview

  Hello all, In my listview I show thumbnails of small images in a certain folder. I setup the listview as follows: var imageList = new ImageList(); foreach (var fileInfo in dir.GetFiles()) { try { var image = Image.FromFile(fileInfo.FullName); imageList.Images.Add(image); } catch { Console.WriteLine("error"); } } listView.View = View.LargeIcon; imageList.ImageSize = new Size(64, 64); listView.LargeImageList = imageList; for (int j = 0; j < imageList.Images.Count; j++) { var item = new ListViewItem {ImageIndex = j, Text = "blabla"}; listView.Items.Add(item); } The user can rightclick on an image in the listview to remove it. I remove it from the listview and then I want to delete this image from the folder. Now I get the error that the file is in use. Of course this is logical since the imagelist is using the file. I tried to first remove the image from the imagelist, but I keep on having the file lock. Can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

• jQuery: script remember values between times it is triggered?

  Hello there, I am writing an ajax script in jQuery. The script gets new or previous page from a php documents that returns HTML. If, located on page 1, I click next, the script IS able to find the next page number (page2), but when I click it AGAIN, the script again has to be able to find the next page number (page3) and at the minute it doesnt. I was wondering how I can save a variable between time a script is triggered, so that I can just + 1 to each time somebody clicks "next", and -1 when somebody clicks "previous". • User avatar cropping/resizing with paperclip and jquery in rails

  Hello fellow stackoverflow users. I am building my first Ruby on Rails app which is going to be my own little community. I have made the User model with several fields and information. But now i am thinking of adding avatar support for the users. And i've been researching and found that my best option would be using Paperclip. But then i've encountered a little dilemma. I want my users to be able to resie/crop their avatar image after they have chosen a image. I have googled alot and since i am using jQuery i found that imgAreaSelect would be best in my opinion. And i think MiniMagick looks best. So to my question. How can i best intergrate Paperclip and imgAreaSelect? I am new to Ruby and Rails so i don't know how i can resize the image. Do you folks know how to intergrate the to or maybe some other options that fits my needs best? • Recommended (remote) backup technique for SQL Compact?

  Hello. Is there a generally recommended approach to backing up an SQL CE/SQLite database over the Internet? The client source is .NET/Windows based, the backup destination runs Ubuntu. I am using a small SQL CE database and have been trying to figure out the most reasonable approach to doing this. The file size (in terms of transfer time/bandwidth) isn't a big deal. I had a look around, and so far the things I've given thought are: Online backup services (Dropbox, Mozy) Opening an FTP/SFTP connection Writing a custom protocol with public/private keys Unsure regarding #1 because I doubt they would like it if somebody transferred gigabytes of data using a POST; and they do not seem to offer native (or .NET) APIs. FTP/SFTP seems risky in terms of security and privileges (as the password/key would need to be stored on the client side). With the right user group/user privileges this may work. Custom protocol seems overkill, which is why I am hoping somebody has already defined a reasonable API for language/platform-independent backups over the Internet. Any hints S.O.?

• Problems with MediaPlayer, raw resources, stop and start

  Hello everybody, I'm new in Android development and I have the next question/problem. I'm playing around with the MediaPlayer class to reproduce some sounds/music. I am playing raw resources (res/raw) and it looks kind of easy. To play a raw resource, the MediaPlayer has to be initialized like this: MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(appContext, R.raw.song); mp.start(); Until here there is no problem. The sound is played, and everything works fine. My problem appears when I want to add more options to my application. Specifically when I add the "Stop" button/option. Basically, what I want to do is...when I press "Stop", the music stops. And when I press "Start", the song/sound starts over. (pretty basic!) To stop the media player, you only have to call stop(). But to play the sound again, the media player has to be reseted and prepared. mp.reset(); mp.setDataSource(params); mp.prepare(); The problem is that the method setDataSource() only accepts as params a file path, Content Provider URI, streaming media URL path, or File Descriptor. So, since this method doesn't accept a resource identifier, I don't know how to set the data source in order to call prepare(). In addition, I don't understand why you can't use a Resouce identifier to set the data source, but you can use a resource identifier when initializing the MediaPlayer. I guess that I'm missing something. I wonder if I am mixing concepts, and the method stop() doesn't have to be called in the "Stop" button. Any help? Thanks in advanced!!!

  Hello, I'm new to LINQ. I understand it's purpose. But I can't quite figure it out. I have an XML set that looks like the following: <Results> <Result> <ID>1</ID> <Name>John Smith</Name> <EmailAddress>[email protected]</EmailAddress> </Result> <Result> <ID>2</ID> <Name>Bill Young</Name> <EmailAddress>[email protected]</EmailAddress> </Result> </Results> I have loaded this XML into an XDocument as such: string xmlText = GetXML(); XDocument xml = XDocument.Parse(xmlText); Now, I'm trying to get the results into POCO format. In an effort to do this, I'm currently using: var objects = from results in xml.Descendants("Results") select new Results // I'm stuck How do I get a collection of Result elements via LINQ? I'm particularly confused about navigating the XML structure at this point in my code. Thank you!

• Help with Custom Workflow that monitors an objects state

  I need to write a workflow that monitors the status of an object. (It could wait for days or hours for a state to change) I have the following states for the object (lets call it an Issue object): 1) Created 2) Unowned 3) Owned 4) UnAssigned 4) Assigned 6) In Progress 7) Signed Off 8) Closed I would also need to take some action on an object if the object was within a certain state for a defined period (not really sure on how this can be accomplished either). The object's owner/assignee can change at any point (i.e. Go from In Progress to UnOwned) so i am guessing that a state machine diagram is what i would need to use. If my thinking is incorrect then please let me know. My application is written in c# .net 3.5. I was thinking about having a service method called CreateIssue that would insert the ticket into the db and then begin an instance of a workflow (with the object or an id of the object as parameters). I wasn't sure of how the workflow would then know when a particular object has been updated, or if the object's state has changed. I've done some really simple "hello world" type of apps with windows workflow foundation 3.5 but have not yet grasped how to do go about implementing something like this. Any direction on this will be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

• rails search nested set (categories and sub categories)

  Hello, I am using the http://github.com/collectiveidea/awesome_nested_set awesome nested set plugin and currently, if I choose a sub category as my category_id for an item, I can not search by its parent. Category.parent Category.Child I choose Category.child as the category that my item is in. So now my item has category_id of 4 stored in it. If I go to a page in my rails application, lets say teh Category page and I am on the Category.parent's page, I want to show products that have category_id's of all the descendants as well. So ideally i want to have a find method that can take into account the descendants. You can get the descendants of a root by calling root.descendants (a built in plugin method). How would I go about making it so I can query a find that gets the descendants of a root instead of what its doing now which is binging up nothing unless the product had a specific category_id of the Category.parent. I hope I am being clear here. I either need to figure out a way to create a find method or named_scope that can query and return an array of objects that have id's corresponding tot he descendants of a root OR if I have any other options, what are they? I thought about creating a field in my products table like parent_id which can keep track of the parent so i can then create two named scopes one finding the parent stuff and one finding the child stuff and chaining them. I know I can create a named scope for each child and chain them together for multiple children but this seems a very tedious process and also, if you add more children, you would need to specify more named scopes.

• Dynamic controls not creating with RSS reader function

  Hello, I am working on a test project for an RSS reader. I am using Chilkat's module for .NET 3.5. What I am trying to do is this: For each item in the RSS feed, I want to dynamically create some controls (labels) that contain stuff like the title, the link and the publication date. The problem is that only the first control comes up "rssTitle", but not the rest and it's definitely not creating the rest, nor cycling through the RSS items. Any ideas where I'm wrong in my code?   Hello Stackoverflow comunity! I believe that my question has to do with all db guru here! Do you know the EAV DB Scheme ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity-attribute-value_model ) and what they say about the performing of this model. I wonder, If I break this model into smaller tables what the result is? Let's talk about it. I have a db with more that 100K records. A lot of categories and many items ( with different properties per category ) Everything is stored in a EAV. If I try to break this scheme and create for any category a unique table is something that will I have to avoid? Yes, I know that probably I'll have a lot of tables and I'll need to ALTER them if I want to add an extra field, BUT is this so wrong? I have also read that as many tables I have, the db will be populate with more files and this isn't good for any filesystem. Any suggestion? Thank you!

• Delphi threads deadlock

  Hello! I am having a problem sometimes with a deadlock when destroying some threads. I've tried to debug the problem but the deadlock never seems to exist when debugging in the IDE, perhaps because of the low speed of the events in the ide. The problem: The main thread creates several threads when the application starts. The threads are always alive and synchronizing with the main thread. No problems at all. The threads are destroyed when the applcation ends (mainform.onclose) like this: thread1.terminate; thread1.waitfor; thread1.free; and so on. but some times one of the threads (which logs some string to a memo, using synchronize) will lock the whole application when closing. I suspect that the thread is synchronizing when I call waitform and the harmaggeddon happens, but that's is just a guess because the deadlock never happens when debbuging (or I've never been able to reproduce it anyway). Any advice?

• Feasibility of using Silverlight for web and windows client with common code base for data intensive

  Hello. Recently in a conversation, someone suggested me to make use of Silverlight if I am targeting a web client and a windows client for the same application. This will cut down my effort for supporting the contrast in both presentation layers. Mine is a product, that will be deployed in enterprises. Both web and windows clients are desirable. With the above context, I have few queries: Is it advisable to adopt the recommended approach and whether this approach is becoming a trend? Besides, some configuration & deployment tweaking, will this significantly reduce effort on the presentation layer? Is there a possibility that my future prospects (for this product) will resist Silverlight footprint? Will I be able to make use of the ASP.Net MVC pattern? Will there be any performance implication for the web client? Will Silverlight support incremental load of controls? If my back-end includes SSRS, will I be able to harness all its front end features with Silverlight? Will I be able to support additional devices with same code base in future? Mine is a very data intensive application from both, data entry and reporting perspective. Is it advisable to use 3rd party controls (like Telerik) for improved user experience and developer productivity? Are their any professional quality open source Silverlight controls (library) available? Further, I seek information of best practices in the context I shared above.

• Google Contacts API - No Redirection

  Hello there, I am currently working on Contact Importer web app (in PHP) so I will be able to grab email address from a user's account on Gmail, Yahoo, etc and use them for my own evil purposes. Just kidding, my web app is very friendly. I thought I would start with Google. I found they have a fantastic little API called Google Contacts API which lets a programmer, like myself, to access a user's contacts. After a couple of hours of struggling and throwing shitty code together, I ran into a few road-blocks. My main question is this: Is there any way that I can have a user provide their username and password for Gmail on my website and have my code retrieve the contacts without that nasty redirection to a Google login page? It's kind of ruins the whole flow of my web app. I've looked into AuthSub, and gotten that to work, but of course the catch is that you have to redirect the user to obtain the access token. It looks like OAuth will have this same catch. The one ray of hope I have is the ClientLogin method of authentication. Again, there is a catch, sometimes Google throws you a CAPTCHA instead of the auth token. Again, the user flow is ruined. I've noticed that our good ol' friends over at Twitter have it working just fine. Does anyone know how they do it? Thanks!

The same code worked previously and still works on other sites made earlier (old ones) but does not seem to work again. • Obtaining information about executable code from exe/pdb

  Hello, I need to extract code (but not data!) from classic win32 exe/dll files. It's clear I can't do this only with extraction of code segment content (because code segment contains also the data -- jump tables for example) and that I need some help from compiler. *.map files are nice but they only contain addresses of functions, i.e. the safest thing I can do is to start at that address and to process until the first return / jump instruction (because part of the function could be mentioned data) *.pdb files are better but I'm not sure what tools to use to extract information like this -- I took a look at DbgHelp and DIA SDK, the latter one seems to be the right tool but it doesn't look very simple. So my question/questions: To your knowledge, it is possible to extract information about code/data position (address + length) only via DbgHelp? If the DIA SDK is the only way, any idea what should I call for getting information like that? (that COM stuff is pretty heavy) Is there any other way? Of course my concern is about Visual Studio, C/C++ source compilation in the first place. Thanks for any hint.

The rest of hideOption1() is fired immediately after showOption1() finishes, ignoring the delay. On the other hand, if I run line 5, all the code in hideOption1() runs simultaneously as desired, but ignores the delay entirely, running immediately after showOption1() finishes. In example there is code which uses static array as a serie : double data1[][2] = { { 10, 20, }, { 13, 16, }, { 7, 30, }, { 15, 34, }, { 25, 4, }, }; dataset->AddSerie((double *) data1, WXSIZEOF(dynamicArray)); WXSIZEOF ismacro defined like: sizeof(array)/sizeof(array[0]) In this case everything works great but in my program Im using dynamic arrays (according to users input). I mean point arent drawn. I wonder if there is any possibility that I can "cheat" that method and give it dynamic array in way it understands it and will read data from correct place thanks for help

  Hello, i have multilingual asp.net site. there is masterpage and default.aspx in masterpage i put two buttons one to click when i want to change the language to english, second for polish.   Hello, I'm trying to set up a maven web project that runs Jetty. In this project, I need 2 JNDIs... my plan is to configure 2 connection pools using c3p0 in Jetty. Thanks Further Info I used the code exactly from your answer lugte098 just to check and I was getting dates which leads me to believe that my TimeSlot class can't have a date correctly set in it's NSDate property. So my question becomes - how from XML do I set a NSDate property?
