• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • logging with Openbox / Gnome shows empty Desktop

  I installed new 12.04 and Openbox. I logged in with GNOME/Openbox and now after system starts I see only Desktop background image and nothing more. When I right click I can do normal GNOME actions like create folder and nothing more really. alt+f2 doesn't start run window though I managed to create a folder and then with Nautilus start terminal but I really don't know what to do next. Two questions: Why doesn't Openbox start properly? How in this situation I can get back to GDM login screen and choose other option to log in?

  If you look at the image below you will see the player surrounded by a dotted yellow box. The dotted yellow box is also part of the player and represented a portion of the player being masked from both rendering and affected by physics. My question is if layer masks in Unity can achieve the following effect. -In Area 1, the red box/animations of the player are visible and the rigidbody of this shape is affected by all Physics. -Any portion of the player that enters Area 2 makes the larger yellow box within the area become visible (and affected by physics) and vice versa for any portion of the smaller red box that enters. -This can persist when both entering and leaving either area from any direction. If I load an image from another server (using plain http), will that alert the customer saying something is wrong? Will I be able to use all existing codes like phpbb, awstats etc without a problem?   how do i get USB install of 12.04 installed? how do i change the BIOS? how do i partition the disk for dual boot? Web instructions for USB ISO bootable image were confusing. Series 9 has new, UEFI compatible BIOS - there is a gotcha involving "fast BIOS Mode" The native windows install included 2 partitions that were hard to get rid of: 21GB NTFS for "Samsung-rec" ... recovery 8GB for Hibernation both of the above were hard to get rid of in windows.

  How can I screen-capture an inactive (minimized / on another workspace) window in Ubuntu? Applications like ImageMagick's import are only able to capture active windows. When attempting to capture an inactive window, I get the following message: unable to read X window image `<id>': Resource temporarily unavailable @ error/xwindow.c/XImportImage/5023. Might be able to do this using Compiz, as it is able to render previews of inactive windows. Furthermore, in my specific case, the window I want to capture is run in a Wine Explorer-container. Inside that container the application is always active.

• Flikering line on top of display

  I just bought a new Dell Inspiron pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. All was fine until I updated the OS. Since then, I have this flickering line at the top of my screen and it won't go after rebooting or changing the screen resolution. It gets really annoying. I don't know which update did this. I tried reinstalling the image from Dell, and it worked fine until I applied the updates. I tried to take a screen shot but it does not show. The line seems to be outside the desktop area. Help please... Thanks!

  I have a Joomla website with existing analytics done by a GTM tag and I need to add another image tag (1x1 pixel) from a separate GTM container. I set the event name for the additional GTM container to a different name from from the existing GTM container (default 'gtm.js') so that the new tag only fires under the specified event. The new container tested out fine in a blank HTML page, but when it is put in the website, it ends up firing twice. I know that because Firebug showed 2 1x1 pixels being loaded and I mark each request with a randomly-generated UID to distinguish them on the server side. I suspect this being caused by having multiple GTM container tags but want to check whether anyone has run into this problem before? As of now, I could not verify nor fix the double counting problem.

• Ubuntu One slow download sync speed

  I am having problems syncing my Ubuntu One files with my Ubuntu 12.04 fresh installation. Everything went well during the setup phase. Now, I am trying to sync back in my folders in my U1 account and the transfer speed is extremely slow. I am averaging a 15kb/s transfer speed. I tried uninstalling ubuntuone-client and reinstalling it. It did not fixed the problem. Right now U1 is stuck downloading a 50mb file. It is taking forever. Any ideas?   What I know: Android can load PNG, BMP, WEBP,... via BitmapFactory. What I want to achive: Load my own 2D file format (e.g. 1-bit texture with a 1-bit alpha channel) and output a RGBA8888 texture. Question: Is there any interface to achieve this?(or any other way) The resulting image is used as a texture for a 3D model. Why would you do that? Saving phone memory and download bandwidth while expanding the texture at runtime to RAM seems reasonable for very simple textures.

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 (unity 4.24.0) and I can't seem to focus the desktop. For example, if I press Mod4+D, the window I had opened stays focused, but the image is see is my wallpaper. If I minimize all windows one by one, the last window I minimize is still focused when the desktop finally appears. This means I can't add desktop icons, nor use the mouse in it. I thought about reporting a bug, but everything works fine on other computers with the latest version of Ubuntu I've used, so I'm wondering about what's happening. Before, when I pressed Mod4+D, the Unity Top Menu would say "Desktop - File Edit ..." and I could use the desktop properly. Thanks in advance!

  I'm trying to create a small roguelike and went as far as random generating rooms and corridors. Each room is an instanced object and contain an arraylist of the others rooms connected by a corridor. I can single out unconnected rooms but how can I know the rooms that are connected only to each other but not to most of the others, forming an island? to illustrated better the problem here is an image from the console on a bogged level. Rooms 5 and 6 are connected only to each other. What algorithm can I use to detect that?

  Am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on a pentium 4 with a hard disk that's been totally wiped clean. Have made an iso image, burned it on a cd and it has been verified. Checked to see if separate files have been burned on cd and they have. When I boot to the disk I get the word unbuntu with some progress dots, 5 min later it goes to a red screen with the mouse arrow on screen. It has stayed in this condition for over half an hour now.   So I have a 32 bit Live USB with persistance that I use to write code, cause that's just how I roll. I can boot it onto my school computers(32 bit Win) no problem, but obviously not my Mac (2007 iMac, 64 Bit). Currently I use VMWare Fusion 6 Pro and a Plop Linux image to use the usb at home, but I can only get 900mb of ram for my VM. I was hoping to make a Live USB that can boot 32 bit and 64 bit for mac, with a shared persistance file, this way I can use my computer's full 2GB. Also, I'm not allowed edit any part of this Mac.   this question just came up as we recently bought content from image stock portals. Many of those altered their license agreement in favor of charging more for using in mobile apps. So instead of using their standard licenses, you need to pay an "extended" licenses which multiplies the fee easily by 5-10. That doesn't make sense as the mobile device is just a smaller browser and protects the content even better than a desktop computer. Are those stock agencies allowed to do that, and is it legal at all ? I am not a lawyer but I would even risk to go on with the standard license and wait to be sued in that matter.

  Some background: I'm poking at a set of puzzles along the lines of Rush Hour/Sokoban/etc; for want of a better description, call them 'motion planning' puzzles - the player has to figure out the correct sequence of moves to achieve a particular configuration. (It's the sort of puzzle that's generically PSPACE-complete if that actually helps anyone's mental image). While I have a few straightforward 'building blocks' that I can use for puzzle crafting and I have a few basic examples put together, I'm trying to figure out how to avoid too much sameness over a large swath of these kinds of puzzles, and I'm also trying to figure out how to make puzzles that have more of a feel of logical solution than trial-and-error. Does anyone know of good resources out there for designing instances of this sort of puzzle once the core puzzle rules are in place? Most of what I've found on puzzle design only covers creating the puzzle rules, not building interesting puzzles out of a set of rules.

  I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and want to upgrade it to 12.04. I have downloaded 12.04 from the Ubuntu site and burned as ISO image CD in a DVD (because it is 701.3MB). When I insert this DVD into my drive for installation, it does not boot. A blank black screen appears. In 8.10 when I click on update to 9.04 it shows some error. Ubuntu 8.10 is not as good as 12.04. Please friends help me to solve this problem. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 in my pc.
