• Cuda GeForce GT 555m (on Ubuntu 12.04 (Virtual Box))

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 in a Virtual Box as guest OS. Today I have tried to enable all functions of my graphic card under Ubuntu. But all my efforts were off the mark... because my experience with Linux is relatively small... I have tried the procedure which is described as in http://sn0v.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/installing-cuda-on-ubuntu-12-04/. Running the cuda-filepack always lead to an error like "installing driver canceled". Then I have tried to install the Bumblebee project. But I always get the error that the bumblebee daemon is not started. After some internet research I found a test-command lspci -nn | grep '[030[02]]' which results in 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: InnoTek ... [80ee:beef] I've been trying to activate the card you for hours without success. Could you please give me some hints how to activate CUDA? Kind regards

• 3D game editor with C++ support and Bullet Physics

  I am very new to game development and hence the question. Is there any open-source game editor that uses Bullet Physics engine with C++ code edit support.I have read about blender but it allows python based editing(if I am not wrong here). I need an editor to quickly draw the needed objects and concentrate more on the logic on their interactions(mostly magnetism based). This(my project) is part of an already existing legacy code in C++ which is forcing the dependency. Also, is there any physics engine which provides support for magnetism?   I have a very solid experience in Software Development and Project management. I just learned that the company I work for has posted a new position with half the experience of mine and even lesser set of skills than I have. However, the new position pays the same salary as my current salary while at the same time they declined to pay the asking salary when I was joining the company. How should I counter this? I know there are many projects in the pipeline where my involvement is crucial for the projects to be successful but I don't want to come across threating. Any advise would be helpful..!

• Questions about linking libraries in C

  I am learning C (still very much a beginner) on Linux using the GCC compiler. I have noticed that some libraries, such as the library used with the math.h header, need to be linked in manually when included. I have been linking in the libraries using various flags of the form -l[library-name], such as -lm for the above-mentioned math library. However, after switching from the command line and/or Geany to Code::Blocks, I noticed that Code::Blocks uses g++ to compile the programs instead of the gcc that I am used to (even though the project is definitely specified as C). Also, Code::Blocks does not require the libraries to be manually linked in when compiling - libraries such as the math library just work. I have two questions: Firstly, is it "bad" to compile C programs with the g++ compiler? So far it seems to work, but after all, C++ is not C and I am quite sure that the g++ compiler is meant for C++. Secondly, is it the g++ compiler that is doing the automatic linking of the libraries in Code::Blocks?

  I work for a small company where I maintain a number of project all at once. I would like to create a blog and note software changes/update so that I can keep track of things. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. I am not an expert on it though. I use three different development environment. 1. Visual Studio 2. Eclipse 3. SQL Server Management Studio

  I want to create blood wounds on my character's bodies by using projected textures. I've watched some commentaries on games like Left 4 Dead and they say they use projected textures for the blood. But the way projected textures work is that if you project a texture on a rigged character, say his chest, it will also appear on his back. So what's the trick? How to get projected textures appear only on one "side" of the mesh? I use the Panda3D game engine, if that will help.

  I'm making a large scale MVC application using Orchard. And I'm going to be separating my logic into modules. I'm also trying to heavily decouple the application for maximum extensibility and testability. I have a rudimentary understanding of IoC, Repository Pattern, Unit of Work pattern and Service Layer pattern. I've made myself a diagram. I'm wondering if it is correct and if there is anything I have missed regarding an extensible application. Note that each module is a separate project. Update So I have many UI modules that use the db module, that's why they've been split up. There are other services the UI modules will use. The UI modules have been split up because they will be made over time, independent of each other.

• C# replacing out parameters with struct

  I'm encountering a lot of methods in my project that have a bunch of out parameters embedded in them and its making it cumbersome to call the methods as I have to start declaring the variables before calling the methods. As such, I would like to refactor the code to return a struct instead and was wondering if this is a good idea. One of the examples from an interface: void CalculateFinancialReturnTotals(FinancialReturn fr, out decimal expenses, out decimal revenue, out decimal levyA, out decimal levyB, out decimal profit, out decimal turnover, out string message) and if I was to refactor that, i would be putting all the out parameters in the struct such that the method signature is much simpler as below. [structName] CalculateFinancialReturnTotals(FinancialReturn fr); Please advise.

• tor browser install ubuntu 14.04

  I have read the answers to other questions regarding the install/running of the tor browser. I have tried the answers given but still cannot get the tor browser to run on mine. I have ubuntu 14.04 and where it shows to start tor browser when I double click all I get is an open tab full of code. Anyone with suggestions I should try? I also tried downloading from tor project did not work and tried the install using command in the terminal and it also did not work. When I had windows I had no problem with the install or the tor browser running. I really like ubuntu better this is the only thing that I am having trouble with. PLEASE HELP!!!

• Is a Single Texture Cube Map Possible?

  I'm currently developing a test project to explore OpenGL 3 texturing abilities. I have a simple cube, made of 8 vertices and 36 indices. I want each of the cubes faces to have a different texture, so I devised this texture: I made it obvious which sections I want visible (I hope...). In Direct3D, I once made a skybox, and I used a cubemap. However, I had to split it into 6 different textures. This is annoying and hard to manage, it would be nice to have just one texture. Is this even possible? I read somewhere that I could do this by duplicating vertices, is that a good idea? Someone else said I could do it in the shader, but that also baffles me...

• Understanding the maximum hit-rate supported by a web-server

  I would like to crawl a publicly available site (and one that's legal to crawl) for a personal project. From a brief trial of the crawler, I gathered that my program hits the server with a new HTTPRequest 8 times in a second. At this rate, as per my estimate, to obtain the full set of data I need about 60 full days of crawling. While the site is legal to crawl, I understand it can still be unethical to crawl at a rate that causes inconvenience to the regular traffic on the site. What I'd like to understand here is -- how high is 8 hits per second to the server I'm crawling? Could I possibly do 4 times that (by running 4 instances of my crawler in parallel) to bring the total effort down to just 15 days instead of 60? How do you find the maximum hit-rate a web-server supports? What would be the theoretical (and ethical) upper-limit for the crawl-rate so as to not adversely affect the server's routine traffic?

(~$500+) Is there a cheaper (~$100 - $200) alternative for getting a designer to improve an existing site? (Things like updating the CCS or suggesting better ways for laying out the navigation.) Or is my best bet trying to pick up a freelancer on Craigslist?

  Lua has been really awesome to learn, it's so simple. I really enjoy scripting languages, and I had an equally enjoyable time learning Python. The Love engine, http://love2d.org/, is really awesome, but I'm looking for something that can handle 3D as well. Is there anything that accommodates 3D in Lua?   In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

  As a summer project I decided it would be fun to make a flash game. Right now I'm going for something like the look of http://www.terraria.org/. It's been a lot of fun, but today I've hit a snag. I need a way to generate my worlds. I've read up Perlin Noise ( http://freespace.virgin.net/hugo.elias/models/m_perlin.htm ) as a possibility, but I my attempts have given me sporadic looking results. What are some techniques used to generate these 2D tile-based worlds? Ideally I would like to be able to generate mountains, plains, and caves.

• Refactor or Concentrate on Completing App

Completing app will mean you get a possibly very hard to maintain app later on? The app is a personal project. • Naming conventions used for variables and functions in C

  While coding a large project in C I came upon a problem. If I keep on writing more code then there will be a time when it will be difficult for me to organize the code. I mean that the naming for functions and variables for different parts of the program may seem to be mixed up. So I was thinking whether there are useful naming conventions that I can use for C variables and functions? Most languages suggest a naming convention. But for C the only thing I have read so far is the names should be descriptive for code readability. EDIT: Examples of some examples of suggested naming conventions: Python's PEP 8 Java Tutorial I read some more naming conventions for java somewhere but couldn't remember where.
