• Choosing MooTools over Google closure?

  I am in a process to select javascript library for our new web application. This app is not very UI heavy but has forms, reports, search, calendars, tabs and target multiple countries like most web apps. We are a tiny team. Biggest concern is maintainability and readability of the code. We are Python programmers. After evaluating many other javascript frameworks we have narrowed down to mootools and google-closure. We loved mootools syntax. It took us no time to learn. It's like Python. On other hand we were stumped seeing private/public in google closure. It's tempting to go for mootools however, I would love to hear from you about specific advantages these frameworks offer over each other.

• using Applescript to retrieve movie file duration via Finder properties

  When using Get Info on movie files in the Finder, I've noticed that many movie files have an accessible "Duration" property under the More Info tab. Is there an easy way to access this data using Applescript? I've tried lines like "set theTime to (duration of aFile)", but it doesn't seem to be as simple as that. Ideally I'd like to access the movie duration via the Finder properties without having to actually open the file in QuickTime. Is this possible?   Looking for a simple SQL (PostgreSQL) regular expression or similar solution (maybe soundex) that will allow a flexible search. So that dashes, spaces and such are omitted during the search. As part of the search and only the raw characters are searched in the table.: Currently using: SELECT * FROM Productions WHERE part_no ~* '%search_term%' If user types UTR-1 it fails to bring up UTR1 or UTR 1 stored in the database. But the matches do not happen when a part_no has a dash and the user omits this character (or vice versa) EXAMPLE search for part UTR-1 should find all matches below. When I excute this in ruby, in result set the sent_date is stores as (Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010) messages = Message.find_by_sql(sql) puts messages[0]['sent_date'] puts statement prints "Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010" how to get same date format in mysql result and ruby result set. • getting data problem with MYSQL under linux

  Hi all, Recently I started to use Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) instead of windows. I am working on a java web application with Spring, MYSQL with jpa. However, before to install linux I made a backup file from the database, then installed linux, installed the MYSQL Query Browser and Administrator tools, and using the Admin tool restored the backup file, then got all the tables and made a simple select statement from one of the tables and got result normally and everything seems to work just fine. There a USER table, and there's a namedQuery defined to get a user by userName, the problem is that when I pass a correct userName I still get nothing! I really don't know what is the problem! The application was working perfectly under windows! Please, can anyone help me to solve this problem? Thank you in advance.

  How would one go about writing a query that selects items 2000-2010 out of a collection of 10000 objects in the data store. I know that it can be done like this in GQL: select * from MyObject limit 10 offset 2000 According to the documentation, when using an offset the engine will still fetch all the rows, only not return them, thus making the query perform in a way that corresponds linearly with the value of offset. Is there any better way? Such as using a pseudo ROWNUM column like one could do in other types of data stores.

  Linking to external file in Ruby on Rails I have a file I want to share as a link in my rails app. I create a link to it in the .erb file like this <li><a href="somefile.pdf">Some File</a> </li> When I select the link I get the following error. Routing Error No route matches "/pages/somefile.pdf" with {:method=:get} Do I really need a route for this? I really just want the save as dialog to popup. Just a link to a file that the user can open or download. What is the rails way to do this (rails newbie here)?

• ODBC Linked server in sql 2005 doesn’t work from remote box

  I have a dev workstation with sql 2005 installed and in it I created a linked server to a odbc connection to a clarion database. I can run select statements against it inside sql Mgt studio. When I take a second workstation and connect to the sql on the first box using sql mgt studio, then try the exact same query I get OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "liveclarion" returned message "[SoftVelocity Inc.][TopSpeed ODBC Driver][ISAM]ISAM Table Not Found". Any thoughts? It appears to have the same functionality on a second sql server. No remote sql mgt studio connect success in queries against my linked ODBC clarion DB. All done with windows authentication and the same AD user.

  Hi, I am wanting to create a Where statement within my Linq statement, but have hit a bit of a stumbling block. I would like to split a string value, and then search using each array item in the Where clause. In my normal Sql statement I would simply loop through the string array, and build up there Where clause then either pass this to a stored procedure, or just execute the sql string. But am not sure how to do this with Linq to Entity? ( From o In db.TableName Where o.Field LIKE Stringvalue Select o ).ToList() Hope you can help. Thanks in advance!

  Hi All! Say I have a stored procedure consisting of several seperate SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements. There is no explicit BEGIN TRANS / COMMIT TRANS / ROLLBACK TRANS logic. How will SQL Server handle this stored procedure transaction-wise? Will there be an implicit connection for each statement? Or will there be one transaction for the stored procedure? Also, how could I have found this out on my own using T-SQL and / or SQL Server Management Studio? Thanks!

I've looked at the core Trigger module, but don't see anything suitable there. I've looked at the hook_user_presave and hook_user_insert API docs, but don't see a way there to cancel an ongoing user registration. As long as they are ignored, it looks like everything gets created just fine. But why would it add those lines? I am creating the database in the WAMP environment which uses MySQL 5.1.36

• In Oracle 10g, how do I see tables in schemes other than system

  In the hr schema there's a table emloyees, I can query data from it specifying it implicitly SELECT count(*) FROM hr.employees while logged in as system, but when I navigate to Home-Object Browser in the browser I can't see the table employees and other tables in other schemas. Can I manage tables in schemas other than system while logged in as system? Maybe there's some setting which enables me to group tables by schema. My Oracle Database version is 10.2.0.1 Express Edition. IIRC I could see all tables in Oracle Database 10.1.x.y. Thanks.

Table 1 (users): id INT username TEXT favourite_food TEXT food_pref_id INT Table 2 (food_preferences): id INT food_type TEXT The logic is as follows: Let's say I have this in my food preference table: 1, 'VEGETARIAN' and this in the users table: 1, 'John', NULL, 1 2, 'Pete', 'Curry', 1 In which case John defaults to be a vegetarian, but Pete should show up as a person who enjoys curry. Question, is there any way to combine the query into one select statement, so that it would get the default from the preferences table if the favourite_food column is NULL?   The full question should be "Is this correct or is it some bug I can't count on?" I've been working with PDO more and in particular playing with fetching data directly into objects. While doing so I discovered this: If I fetch data directly into an object like this: $STH = $DBH->prepare('SELECT first_name, address from people WHERE 1'); $obj = $STH->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_CLASS, 'person'); and have an object like this: class person { public $first_name; public $address; function __construct() { $this->first_name = $this->first_name . " is the name"; } } It shows me that the properties are being assigned before the __construct is being called -- because the names all have " is the name" appended. Is this some bug (in which case I can't/won't count on it) or is this The Way It Should Be. Because it's really quite a nice thing the way it works currently.

• Transactional isolation level needed for safely incrementing ids

  I'm writing a small piece of software that is to insert records into a database used by a commercial application. The unique primary keys (ids) in the relevant table(s) are sequential, but does not seem to be set to "auto increment". Thus, I assume, I will have to find the largest id, increment it and use that value for the record I'm inserting. In pseudo-code for brevity: id = select max(id) from some_table id++ insert into some_table values(id, othervalues...) Now, if another thread started the same transaction before the first one finished its insert, you would get two identical ids and a failure when trying to insert the last one. You could check for that failure and retry, but a simpler solution might be setting an isolation level on the transaction. For this, would I need SERIALIZABLE or a lower level? Additionally, is this, generally, a sound way of solving the problem? Are the any other ways of doing it?

  Hi, I'm working on a sudoko solver. my method is using a game tree and explore possible permutations for each set of digits by DFS Algorithm. in order to analyzing problem, i want to know what is the count of possible valid and invalid sudoko tables? - a 9*9 table that have 9 one, 9 two, ... , 9 nine. (this isn't exact duplicate by this question) my solution is: 1- First select 9 cells for 1s: (*) 2- and like (1) for other digits (each time, 9 cells will be deleted from remaining available cells): C(81-9,9) , C(81-9*2,9) .... = 3- finally multiply the result by 9! (permutation of 123456789 in (*)) this is not equal to accepted answer of this question but problems are equivalent. what did i do wrong?
