• SSTP client disconnects shortly after successfully connected to VPN

  I'm successfully authenticating and connecting to a SSTP VPN (on windows 2008) from my windows 7 machine, but for some reason, the connection is disconnected about a 1-2 seconds after it's established. I've done the following: Defined a SSTP VPN on my windows server 2008. Defined the same machine as CA. Issued the needed certificates and published them on the client. I'm currently testing this VPN inside my LAN so all the needed ports are opened. Here are the event log entries when trying to connect: Error Log (Client): The user HOME\User dialed a connection named Home VPN which has terminated. The reason code returned on termination is 829. Error Log (Server-VPN): The user HOME\User connected on port VPN0-0 on 7/27/2012 at 1:57 AM and disconnected on 7/27/2012 at 1:57 AM. The user was active for 0 minutes 0 seconds. 312 bytes were sent and 4528 bytes were received. The reason for disconnecting was user request. What would be the issue? How can I resolve or debug it? UPDATE: I've found an event log (Log=System, Source=RasSstp) message on the windows 7 machine that tries to connect to the VPN: The SSTP-based VPN connection to the remote access server was terminated because of a security check failure. Security settings on the remote access server do not match settings on this computer. • WinXP: Error 1167 -- Device (LPT1) not connected

  I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment. • Terminal Server 2008: Installing 16-bit Application (FoxPro 2.6)

  I have one physical Windows 2008 R2 server running Hyper-V. Running under Hyper-V I have a virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services). I'm preparing my applications using the "Install Application on Remote Desktop..." control panel app. So far so good. However, I am now trying to install FoxPro 2.6 which is a 16-bit windows application. When I try to install it I receive the message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher". Is there any way around this? I'm in the middle of a large migration to thin-clients and foxpro 2.6, while it won't be around forever, is a very integral application for our data-entry personnel. How can I get this to work?   I want to know the REAL difference between Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional/Utimate. In India, the cost of different versions: Ultimate - 11,200 INR Professional - 10,700 INR Home Premium - 6,600 INR The absolute cost of the first two is so high to me that the difference (500 INR) doesn't matter. So to me there is really no choice between the first two - If I decide to buy the Professional version, I'd rather go for Ultimate itself. What I want to know is, whether Home Premium is enough for my needs. I tried searching for comparison but many look like just marketing junk from MS. They are short and vague. According to this page, the major differences between Pro and HomePremium are Run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode. Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join. You can do both in Pro but not in Home Premium. I intend to use my Windows 7 for a small business - just starting up. So I'll be dealing with the following: All kinds of development tools, servers Very important - I will run Virtual Machine Software (MS VPC or VMWare or Sun VirtualBox etc..) My system will be acting as the server for most purposes till I can afford dedicated servers. Connect the system to a variety of network devices (PCs, Printers, etc..) Run productivity, business and financial apps Any other small software startup business requirement that I haven't thought of yet. Professional (and Ultimate) is twice as expensive as Home Premium. So it'd be great if someone can point out the things you cannot do with Home Premium, when you use it like I explained above, so that I can make a decision about which one to buy. I need some real-life experiences so that I can make an informed decision - not a decision based on marketing junk.

• Personal VPN Solutions

  I want to set up a VPN for my laptop to connect back at home so that I don't have to directly expose my desktop computer to the internet. Here is what I have: Internet -> DD-WRT v24sp1-mega -> Desktop PC w/ Windows 7 Ultimate -> MacBook w/ OSX 10.6 What would be the easiest thing to do? DD-WRT has PPTP and OpenVPN built in and Windows 7 has RRAS itself but thus far I've run into some problems. Are there any other alternatives, or suggestions on getting these to work? PPTP I tried setting up PPTP directly on DD-WRT using these directions. When I tried connecting using my external IP from the MacBook I just kept getting that the remote server did not respond. OpenVPN According to the instructions here I don't have enough open nvram to set up OpenVPN. RRAS I got RRAS set up without a problem and can connect from the MacBook to the Windows 7 box while I'm on the same network. I port forwarded 1723 on the DD-WRT back to the Windows 7 box and made sure that PPTP Passthrough was enabled. Again, like PPTP, it just kept timing out.

  Windows 7 64-bit, recent install, added Office 2010. When I create some boxes and open the quick-style menu, it crashes (or stops responding, in windowese, and then it sends an error report). • Printer spooler spoolsv.exe crashes

  We have a problem with a Windows 7 print spooler. There is a Windows 2011 Small Business Server running as print server and 2 computers in the network their print spooler keeps crashing at random. The log files says it is ntdll.dll that has a fault.   I hope this isn't a stupid question, and if it is, then I want to at least get it over with so I don't feel so dumb in the future. Here we are, loading up a Windows crash dump with Windbg. Here are the first few lines of the debugger output: 0: kd> .dumpdebug ----- 64 bit Kernel Summary Dump Analysis DUMP_HEADER64: MajorVersion 0000000f MinorVersion 00001db1 ... The MinorVersion I mostly understand. It's hexadecimal and it translates to 7601 in decimal. Windows admins would already be able to tell from that that this must be either a Win7 x64 machine or a 2k8 R2 machine with SP1. But isn't 7601 the build number? It's supposed to be Major.Minor.Build/Revision... right? Also I don't understand the MajorVersion. It should be 6. This version of Windows is 6. But isn't 0000000f in hexadecimal 15 in decimal? The full version string of this version of Windows, when you launch the Command Prompt for instance, is 6.1.7601. If 7601 is the MinorVersion, then what is 1 and what is 6? And why does the crash dump say 0F?

• CD and DVD burning very slow with LG DVD Burner

  I have an HP m7560in Desktop which came with an LG DVD burner. As far back as I can remember, it has been having problems in burning discs. It used to take about one and a half hour to burn 4 GB of data on a blank DVD-R. I am using Nero and ImgBurn and I usually select 8x speed for burning. I used to run XP earlier and now I run Windows 7 on it, but I face the problem on both. I have already checked that DMA mode is selected in the IDE controllers' properties. On XP, uninstalling the IDE controllers and DVD drive from the Device Manager, rebooting and letting it install the drivers again fixed the problem for a while, but after a couple reboots, the problem used to come back. On Windows 7, even doing that is not fixing the problem. In fact, in Windows 7, the burning process doesn't even begin. Imgburn gets stuck on the first stage (of writing Lead-In), and it never progresses until I turn off / reset the computer. I checked the disc info after this happened, and the disc still shows empty and ready to be burned on, so it's obvious that it didn't even touch the disc. I have already had the drive replaced once by HP, but it didn't fix the problem. Do you guys have any suggestions? (Note that Windows Updates doesn't give any newer driver for the controllers, or any other components for that matter).

  So I've just finished messing up my computer beyond repair. I originally had a Windows 7 install on my 64GB SSD and all my data on my 1.5TB HDD. So I decided to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I tried to clone my 64GB SSD onto my HDD; but that didn't work either at first. I later learned that it wiped all my data off of it. Thank goodness for the cloud. So I retried the cloning after I realized that my data was gone, and I finished it. So I rebooted and got a cryptic error message: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. So I did. Several times. I followed the instructions to rebuild the bootmanager from many websites, including HowToGeek, smallvoid.com, and more. None worked. BTW, I've lost my Windows 7 Professional DVDs. All I have is my Windows 7 Home Premium DVD. It's the one I got with my laptop. How can I get back to a working computer? I'm willing to wipe anything, as my data is all in the cloud.

• Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine?

  Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I am trying to RDP from a Windows 7 Professional dual monitor physical machine to a Windows 7 Professional VM hosted on esxi 4.0. I can get the spanning option to work to both monitors, but I have tried 3 different methods of connecting but have not been able to use true multiple monitors. At different times, I tried checking the "use all monitors" option, command line mstsc /multimon and added the line use multimon:i:1 to the .rdp file. None of these worked. Any ideas? The physical machine can connect to other Windows 7 physical machines with true multi monitor access. I also have the same issue when going from a 32bit RC1 machine to a Windows 7 Professional x64, but not when going in the reverse direction. • System Idle Process network traffic?-Updated

  I was using NetBalancer and noticed network traffic on an unidentified service, but when I highlight it and then go to the lower center pane and click the parent process it says it is the System Idle process, it is showing incoming and outgoing traffic in the upper pane, anyone know why this Windows System Idle Process is talking on the network? Windows 7 HP 64bit . . . Edit, after blocking the traffic for that unidentified Service I checked my event viewer (Windows LogsSystem) and found 3 new events that were never recorded before and matched the time I blocked the traffic. So is this part of the Windows local DNS cache? Event ID 1014 DNS Client Events Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. dns.msftncsi.com Name resolution for the name wpad.home timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. wpad Name resolution for the name mscrl.microsoft.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. mscrl.microsoft.com . Then My Web Browser refused to work, I re-enabled the traffic and all returned to normal. .

• Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP.

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. The DC netbios is city01 while the domain's FQDN is city.domain.org (I think this is mistaken and should have been just domain.org) But, the second link led me to a post which I believe answers my question. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. What is a ATAPI Error? Do I need to re-install Windows? I generally find the occurs when I try to backup my machine (using Windows Backup) or when using a program that uses Volume Shadow Copy. I have run "sfc", no problems. There are no Device Errors in Device Manager. I have also run "vssadmin list writers", no problems. Whats going on??? Would it be a good idea to re-install Windows 7?

• IIS running but not serving content

  I have an internal dev server running Windows 2k8 R2 with the Web and FTP Server roles set up which won't serve any content at all. Trying to connect from another host via telnet yields 'connection failed': c:\>telnet devserver 80 Connecting To devserver...Could not open connection to the host, on port 80: Conn ect failed Using netstat -an | find "80" on the dev server returns no connections on port 80 (a few on 1801, etc) tcpview confirms this, listing no open connections on port 80. The following services related to the Web role are running: World Wide Web Publishing Service Application Host Helper Service Microsoft FTP Service (ftp connections to port 21 are granted) Windows Process Activation Service The default website bindings are: Type Host Name Port IP Address Binding Information http 80 * net.tcp 808:* net.pipe * net.msmq localhost msmq.formatname localhost When setting up a new application under the default site, the test function passes both connection/authorisation only if the 'connect as' user is local admin, otherwise the test errors with 'invalid application path'. At no point is the W3SVC service PID bound to port 80 (it is running and bound to 21 for ftp). There are no W3SVC log directory at c:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\ (only FTPSVC2), and no HTTPERR directory at c:\windows\system32\ or c:\windows\system32\logfiles\. There do not appear to be any related errors in the event logs. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on be a good place dig into what's (not) going on here!

• VPN Error 691 but server says authenticated on server

  Hello all, I have a problem with a vpn connection on Windows XP SP3 that appears to be related to an account (maybe privilleges or an option that I have missed). When connecting using my account, which is a domain administrator account it will connect to through the vpn fine. However, using an account created for another person they receive Error 691: Username or Password is not valid for this domain. On the domain controller (windows 2003) I see a logon successful message: User DOMAIN\user was granted access. Fully-Qualified-User-Name = int.company.net.au/People/Management/User NAS-IP-Address = 10.30.0.3 NAS-Identifier = not present Client-Friendly-Name = MelbourneCore Client-IP-Address = Router-ip Calling-Station-Identifier = not present NAS-Port-Type = Virtual NAS-Port = 77 Proxy-Policy-Name = Use Windows authentication for all users Authentication-Provider = Windows Authentication-Server = undetermined Policy-Name = Remote VPN Access Authentication-Type = MS-CHAPv1 EAP-Type = Does anyone have any ideas as to where else I should look for finding a solution? If i use the wrong password it gives a logon failure error in the event viewer. Also removing them from the remote access group gives a logon failure error. Nothing appears in the event viewer on the local machine. In the past all that is required is to add them into our Remote Access Users group. Any help?

  So, i am in the process of tweaking my spending and i need to change my backup plan... I am currently using a mix of JungleDisk and ZManda ZCB to backup files on my MacBook Pro, Main Windows Server Wrokstation, a dedicated Windows Server in a datacenter, and various other machines and file sources. The problem is the cost: this month, it has cost me about $90 to backup a little over 500Gb... This amount of data will increese over time too, since i am backing up Photos (24Mb RAW images + 4-8MB JPEGs), Videos (various cameras shooting 720p and 1080p), Music, Movies, TV shows and Apps from iTunes (though with iTunes cloud, this might not need to be backed up again) and source code... I have looked at the likes of Mozy, CrashPlan+ and Pro, Backblaze and Carbonite, but each have their problems: Mozy seems overly expenvice per gig at 50C Crashplan wont sell to me since i am outside the US (they hide it on their site... hidden in the FAQ section!) Backblaze dont support Windows Server Carbonite business pricing is $600 up front for 500Gb of storage... Fro $229, they will not backup Windows Servers. So, other than those, Jungle Disk (at 15c per Gig) or ZManda (also at 15c per Gig) what other options are there? what are other people using?

• Line-length-tolerant XML diff

  I've looked at the answers to this question, and unfortunately none of them has helped me so far. Not to beat about the bush, the second edition of C# in Depth is now in copy edit. I want to be able to see what the copy editor's done really easily, so I can reject or accept his changes. We're using a modified form of docbook, but I'm happy enough looking at the raw XML source. All fine so far - except that when the copy editor makes a change, that can change the line wrapping. So something that used to read: <para>Foo bar baz second line</para> now reads <para>Foo bar grontle baz second line</para> Now the real change here is the insertion of "grontle". I don't care that "baz" has moved from the first line to the second line... but all the diff tools I've seen do. I realise that one option would be to reformat the whole document (or possibly just whole paragraphs) into single lines... but that's then really hard to read, because diff tools don't wrap when they're displaying. I'm sure I can manage with the tools I've got, but if anyone knows of anything better, I'd be really glad to hear about it. I suspect my publishers would too :) (I've included the Windows tag here because I'd really need it to be available on Windows. I'd like to hear about any non-Windows software too, but only in case I could help to build it on Windows :)

• None of usb-controllers are working after a crash

  So I have a GA-p35-DS4 mboard with a Q6600, running windows7-x64. After a random crash with a bluescreen (not caused by anything particular as I recall), none of the usb-controllers are working. (And none of the devices connected to those usb ports). All the controllers are showed up in the device manager, but every one has a warning-icon (as they are not functioning properly). The windows identifies them correctly, it shows exactly the model of each controller, and it says that the driver is installed. Now, when I try to reinstall the driver (Update driver menu item in the device manager), it tries to find it, finds the driver, but quits saying that the driver was found but could not be installed. Additionally, it displays "This operation requires an interactive window station", whatever that means... Now get this, the same thing happens with a new pci-usb controller card! It is found (actually each time the machine starts, it is found as new hardware), but trying to install drivers leads nowhere, I am getting the same message about an interactive window station. (tried to install drivers from the acoompanying CD) I have tried deleting those devices from device manager and let windows find them again, but that leads to same results. None of the ports on this extension card work either. This should not be a hardware problem, a usb keyboard connected to the builtin usb controller works in bios, and even in another OS running the same computer (old xp installation) What to do? Will I have to reinstall? Can deleting infcache.1 help? Is there some way to let windows remove all old drivers and try to find all hardware again, this time only looking for drivers on a windows install disk or something?

• After reinstallation, Disk Cleanup disappears when I click OK.

  After I reinstalled Windows 7, Disk Cleanup stopped working. I can start Disk Cleanup and select the drive to clean, but when I click on the OK button, the window disappears. Any solutions? But a new process - WerFault.exe appeared under svchost.exe a few seconds after i clicked the "OK" button. It disappeared, too, from the process list after some time (i think it disappeared along with cleanmgr.exe).

• Remote Desktop Network Level Authentication Not Supported

  I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3 x86, trying to connect to a system with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64. Recently, I updated the Remote Desktop Connection software on the XP system in hopes of using Network Level Authentication (NLA) for my connections to the Windows 7 box. After the update, I connected to the Windows 7 box over RDP and enabled NLA believing that the updated client should support it. After disconnecting and attempting to reconnect, I'm presented with the following error: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support. So, I checked the About page in Remote Desktop Connection to make sure the update had applied. This is what I see. Remote Desktop Connection Shell Version 6.1.7600 Control Version 6.1.7600 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Network Level Authentication not supported. Remote Desktop Protocol 7.0 supported. I thought NLA was supposed to be a part of RDP 7.0 clients. Is there a component I'm missing somewhere?

• who has files open on a linux server

  I have the fairly common task of finding who has files open on our Linux (Ubuntu ) file server in our Windows environment. We use Samba on the network and I use Putty from my workstation to establish a shell window to run bash scripts. I have been using something like this to find what files are open: (this returns a list of process ids with each open file) Robert:$ sudo lsof | grep "/srv/office/some/folder" Then, I follow up with something like this to show who owns the process: (this returns the name of the machine on the network using the IP4 protocol who owns the process) Robert:$ sudo lsof -p 27295 | grep "IPv4" Now I know the windows client who has a file open and can take action from there. As you can tell this is not difficult but time consuming. I would prefer to have a windows application I can run that would just give me what I want. So, I have been thinking about creating some process I can run on Linux that listens on a port and then returns a clean list of all open files with the IP address of the host who has the file open. Then, a small windows client application that can send the request on the port. It seems like this should be a very common need but I can not find anything like this that has been done before. Any suggestions?
