  • Is there a program to show programs loading during the boot process in real time?

    Hi all, There are any number of programs that will show me WHAT will run during the boot process for Windows XP. I've always been partial to Mike Lin's version but there are several others, some of which are quite possibly superior. That's not the issue. What I'd really like is a program that would load first and then would list the programs that were about to load and then check them off as the programs loaded. This isn't something I necessarily need for myself. But certain family members get click happy as soon as they see the icon they eventually want to run and end up clicking on it. THIRTY TWO TIMES in one memorable crash-inducing spasm. If there was some way for 'progress' to be shown during the loading of from the various spots Windows auto-loads from, PLUS a BIG BANNER saying "Please do not move the mouse or click on anything until done.", I think I might cut down on my early morning family support calls significantly. I've tried a variety of searches, but I couldn't find the ones that show in real time in the forest of links to programs that will show the list after the fact. Any leads? If not, do any of you who write the after-the-fact listers want to take a shot at producing a utility to do what I think would be a relatively popular utility?   • Computer is really slow

    I'm not exactly sure when exactly it started happening, but my computer now is extremely slow. Originally, I have been using this computer for all sorts of stuff: Photoshop, web design/development, movies and even some light (Warcraft 3) gaming. I have been running it with Windows XP But now it is very, very slow, and I don't know how, why or when this happened. After I noticed the slowness, I removed Windows XP and installed Windows 7 on it, but it is still very slow. Now watching videos is unbearable at full screen (slow frame rates, audio out of sync) and painful when made smaller. Why would this happen? What would cause this? I am starting to think it is a hardware problem (the CPU has died or something), but I don't even know if that is possible. The PC is running with 1GB of RAM, three hard drives (all up, something like 400 GB) and I think a 1.6GHz processor

  • PacketFence Installation?

    So I've stumbled across PacketFence during my search for a decent Network Access Control system. After doing a little research about it's capabilities I've come to realize it's meets all the requirements that I was looking for. Unfortunately, being primarily a MS Administrator, I'm having many issues trying to successfully getting it up and running. Is there anyone or any place that has a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this? I love the prospect of using Open Source software, but need some help jumping this particular hurdle. I'm trying to use CentOS for the OS but I'm open to alternatives if thats what it takes to get this system up and running.

  • Error: "The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open."

    On Windows Vista SP2 - I'm attempting to upgrade to Windows 7. After I put in the Windows 7 DVD in the drive, I receive the Windows 7 upgrade splash screen (so the drive is working at this moment). But then when I click "Upgrade to Windows 7", I receive a error message stating: Error: The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open Any ideas what's causing this error? Since receiving the error, I have already replaced the DVD drive with a brand new one and still receive the same error. I've also checked Device Manager and no hardware is reporting problems (no cautions or failures).

  • Monit can't detect MySQL, but I can

    Monit is configured to watch MySQL on localhost at port 3306. check process mysqld with pidfile /var/lib/mysql/li175-241.pid start program = "/etc/init.d/mysql start" stop program = "/etc/init.d/mysql stop" if failed port 3306 protocol mysql then restart if 5 restarts within 5 cycles then timeout My application, which is configured to connect to MySQL via localhost:3306, is running just fine and can access the database. I can even use MySQL Query Browser to connect to the database remotely via port 3306. The port is totally open and possible to connect to. Therefore, I'm pretty darn certain that it's running. However, running monit -v reveals that Monit cannot detect MySQL on that port. 'mysqld' failed, cannot open a connection to INET[localhost:3306] via TCP This happens consistently, until Monit decides not to track MySQL anymore, as configured. How can I begin to troubleshoot this issue?

  • Reliability of S.M.A.R.T.?

    I've been using ActiveSmart to monitor my hard-drives health for a few weeks now, and its telling me my brand new 1.5 TB hard-drive is half-dead already. About on-par with one of my hard-drives which I know is at least half dead because I've been having some read errors and heard ticking noises. Now I haven't actually noticed any problems with my 1.5 TB drive; should I be concerned that it's going to crap out on me too? Or could ActiveSmart be giving a mis-diagnosis because I use it a lot or something (I've used up 795 GB in the 2 and a half weeks I've had it). The events that ActiveSmart has been catching is "Hardware ECC recovered". Maybe these new fangled super big hard-drives somehow rely on ECCs to squeeze out the extra space, but this isn't actually a cause for concern?

And it is supposed to hold around 100 000 users the first year, also the system must be able to handle 1000 users working at the same time. It is the first time I'm asked to do something like this, so I hope you can give me a hand and help me because I feel a little lost. The system's data base is Mysql.   • How reliable is HDD SMART data?

    Based on SMART data, you can judge the health of a disk, at least that is the idea. If I, for instance, run sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda on my ArchLinux laptop, it says that the hard drive passed the self tests and that it should be "healthy" based on this. My question is how reliable this information is, or more specifically: If according to the SMART data this disk is healthy, what are the odds of the disk suddenly failing despite this? This assumes the failure is not due to some catastrophic event that impossibly could have been predicted, such as the laptop falling down on the floor causing the drive heads to hit the disk. If the SMART data does not say the disk is in good shape, what are the odds of the disk failing within some amount of time? Is it possible that there will be false positives and how common are these? Of course, I keep backups no matter what. I am mostly curious.

  • Fuzzy Sound / Crackling

    Whenever I play music through my headphones on my laptop, I get a little bit of fuzz or cracking that is noticeable at lower volumes. When I listen through my phone, the sound is much clearer, both when music is playing and nothing is playing. The noise is more noticeable with my Sennheiser 280 PRO headphones than with earbuds. Is there anything I can do to improve audio playback on my laptop? I am surprised that the audio quality is better on my phone than my laptop which should have better hardware.

  • Monitor network traffic on a per-app basis in OS X?

    Title says it all. I'm looking for an app for OS X that will tell me what applications are using the network and what their in/out is. I can get most of the way there with LittleSnitch but it's the bandwidth part that it fails at. The only app I've come across that comes close is "Rubbernet" and while it does look like it would probably do what I want, it's very expensive (more than LittleSnitch) and doesn't look like it gets regular feature updates. Any recommendations?

We want to ignore some of them so that the report is all green and any alert will stand out. For example, we want to ignore the alert regarding the firewall being off on the server.   • Comprehensive solution for managing patches, event viewing, change management, inventory, etc

    I'm looking for a solution that incorporates most or all of the following: Patch Management, Server event viewing/tracking, AD change management, ticketing and internal/external kb, remote access - ability to shadow user sessions or create new ones, imaging, and inventory. Our environments contains Windows Servers and ESXi Hosts (We're not completely virtual, but we're moving that direction). Various Cisco and Linksys switches and firewalls. This is a tall order, and I don't know if it can be done on a reasonable budget.   • IIS httpTracing setting has no effect

    I'm trying to troubleshoot some performance issues we are having on a specific ASP.NET page with Microsoft's Perfecto Tool on IIS 7.5. Perfecto uses the ETW hooks build in to IIS to report on specific HTTP request, and is working quite well. However, I only want IIS to emit traces for one specific page, say "Default.aspx" in my TestApp Web Application. Following the instructions on the httpTracing man page, I should be able to add the traceUrls element to my root web.config file for TestApp. This doesn't seem to affect tracing whatsoever when I do so. For example, I've used the following settings in the web.config file and every request that hits the IIS server is sending tracing messages that are in turn picked up by Perfecto. (In the System.WebServer section) <httpTracing> <traceUrls> <add value="/Default.aspx" /> </traceUrls> </httpTracing> I then found that the applicationHost.config file on the server had an empty element. I tried removing this element, as well as the httpTracing element in the web.config. After a machine reboot, I was still getting tracing messages! My understanding is that the presense of the httpTracing element is what controlls whether ETW tracing is on or not. I ensured there was no reference to httpTracing in the machine.config, too. At a loss, I decided to remove the IIS Tracing feature with Server Manager. After a reboot, I no longer got ETW tracing. I then reinstalled IIS Tracing feature with Server Manager. As expected, the httpTracing element reappeared in the applicationhost.config file. Tracing messages began sending again for all sites and pages. I then tried to use the traceUrls element at the applicationhost.config level. This also didn't filter out and traces. I must be misunderstanting something key with how httpTracing works. There aren't many resources on the web to help me, either. Can anyone tell me if what I'm trying should work? Has anyone else had success filtering tracing message per page with traceUrls? I should note that I also tried changing with the following setting in applicationhost.config to "allow". It didn't seem to help. <section name="httpTracing" overrideModeDefault="Allow" />

  • I'd like to configure nagios to alerts only when there are no more mx servers available

    In my company there are two redundant MX servers, I would like to tell nagios to wake me in the night ONLY if both servers are down. The default behavior is to alert whenever one of the MX servers is down. I would like to set a timeperiod i.e. 23:00 to 06:00 when nagios only alerts me by sms in case both servers are down. I am using nagios3 but I couldn't find something like this in the docs. Thanks

    I have noticed that I can only display an uninterrupted period with Cacti. I am wondering whether is possible or not to make a custom graph which displaying only the business hours during a period (a week, a month, etc.). If it is possible, how could I configure it on Cacti ? For example, I would like to be able to display a graph with an average inbound/outbound traffic between 8am and 7pm for 5 business days a week of the last month. I would apreciate any help. How do I determine how much power the power supply needs? I'm building a mini ITX system on a budget and so I need to get as small as possible that is sufficient. I'll have a mini itx mobo with on board wifi and bluetooth, 8 GB RAM, an Intel i3 3.1 Ghz processor, 64 GB SSD and a slim optical drive. In the future I might add a descrete GPU, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD. What is the minimum power I need and how do I calculate that?

  • Logging with Resource Monitor?

    I am having sudden spikes in disk read activity, which can tie up my system for a few seconds at a time. I would like to figure out the cause of this before I set my machine to go live. With Performance Monitor I know I can log activity, but this does not show me individual processes that cause a spike. Resource Monitor allows me to see processes, but I have no way to keep logs. It seems unless I have Resource Monitor open at the time of a spike, I will not be able to identify the process causing the spike. Can someone suggest a way to log with Resource Monitor, or an alternative tool that can?
