• How to monitor IO svctm with every 5 mins frequency using nagios?

  I want to collect samples of iostat's svctm, await every 5 mins from all of my servers and store them in nagios. I want to get the values for what is happening in every 5 minutes (not since boot time, iostat's first output gives values since boot time). How can I do it in nagios? EDIT The tps should NOT be calculated #of transactions happened since reboot divided by uptime. What I want is # of transferred happened in last X mins divided X*60.

• Mac failing (failed?) hard drive - is all hope lost?

  It's a 500 GB Seagate laptop hard drive that came with my Macbook Pro. Apple partition format. Already replaced and now have it external, connected via SATA/USB adapter. Trying to get just a few files that I worked on while out of town when it crashed (and thus did not have my time machine backup drive). Drive will not mount, but OS X Disk Utility detects it and can read the capacity, model number, and even the name of the partition, which leads me to believe all hope may not be lost. Failed attempts so far: Disk Utility verify+repair says drive cannot be repaired and that I should back up immediately (lovely) Disk Warrior says it cannot rebuild the directory due to hardware failure Data Rescue quick & deep scans immediately failed PhotoRec says "error reading sector" for every sector (at least for the few minutes I let it run before closing it to explore other options) What else can I try here? Again, I'm just looking for a few, small files (python scripts to be specific) - not a full recovery.

• nagiosgraph new services not showing

  I am using Nagios Core with Nagiosgraph and had only enabled graphing for cpu usage for a while. This worked fine, but now i wanted to add some more services (for example memory usage). The new services are not working (no rrd data is generated). The Nagiosgraph site only says "no data available" and I get no error in apache log, nagiosgraph.log or nagiosgraph-cgi.log. The new services are standard services (nsclient++ MEMUSE for example) and of course they are included in the map file. If I execute the checks manually, it shows also the perfdata. I added the services by enabling the "graphed-service" use. Did I miss something?

• Innotop and Monit to kill thread using too much resources

  Instead of restarting the whole MYSQL process, sometimes I just want to kill the offending thread instead of making everything go down. Usually the spike in CPU is when a bot is crawling the first pages of pagination of my site (over 70.000 paginated results, 45 items per page). Is there a way I could do this automatically using monit and innotop? I couldn't find relevant information on Google, that's why I'm asking here. If these two tools aren't par to the task, which ones should I use?

It does not attempt to block incoming attacks or redirect any traffic. What it does to is perform an IDS role on the network. Any suspicious activity is logged and reported. Snort would be one such piece of software however I was wondering what other solutions and ideas the rest of the community has.

  My architecture is based on Amazon. A ELB load balancer balances POST requests among m1.large instances. Every instance has a nginx server on port 80 which distributes the requests to 4 python-tornado servers on backend which handle the request. These tornado servers are taking about 5 - 10ms to respond to one request but this is the internal compute time of every request. I want to put this thing on test and i want to measure the response time from ELB to upstream and back and how does it vary when the QPS throughput is increased and plot a graph of Time vs. QPS vs. Latency and other factors like CPU and Memory. Is there a software to do that or should i log everything somewhere with latency checks and then analyze the whole log to get the stuff out. I would also need to write a self-monitor which keeps checking the whole response time. Is it possible to do it with a script from within the server. If so, will it be accurate ?

• How to make a quiet laptop ? [closed]

  Most modern laptops have very noisy fans. I am looking for a quiet laptop or a small stationary computer which has all its hardware built in a display. Most tasks will be pdf/docs processing, real-time audio processing, web-surfing and skype video chats. Certainly, there is no any fan-less model today; but maybe some of the existed laptops do not switch on their fans so often or implement different solutions? For example, an iPad has no fan at all and it is fast enough for my needs, but it has no normal operating system, so I can't use it for anything but audio chats and web-surfing. Or maybe I can buy a laptop and tweak it to make it absolutely noiseless? Can you recommend me any solution please? Thanks in advance!

• Windows XP freezes completely

  Lately my Win XP SP3 started to make problems. From time to time it freezes completely. Which means that the system does not react to mouse and keyboard. Keyboard led indicators also do not react to CAPS-, SCROLL-, NUM- LOCK keys. The problem is that I don't understand what causes this behavior and it seems to happen randomly. System event log also does not contain any clues. I'm thinking this could be some driver/hardware problem, but I don't know which. Are there any tools that would help me figure out the cause of this problem? Does anybody have any clue how can I fix this?

• Setting up apache vhost for Icinga

  It's been a while since I've worked with Apache so please be kind - I'm also aware of this question but it hasn't been much help to me. I'd like to set up a simple vHost w/ Apache for my Icinga instance. Icinga is up and running and I can access it from x.x.x.x/icinga, however would like to be able to access it externally as well as internally. I have set up the /etc/hosts file and the following is my barebones vhost statement in httpd.conf <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /usr/share/icinga ServerName icinga.domain.com ErrorLog logs/icinga.com-error_log CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common </VirtualHost> I also have the following in my .htaccess file <Directory> Allow From All Satisfy Any </Directory> An entry has been made for the instance in the Windows DNS server on my network, however when I try to access the site by URL I am greeted with Internal Server Error. Reviewing the /var/log/icinga.com-error_log I see the following entry. • Is it dangerous to add/remove a hard-drive to a Windows machine which is in stand by?

  Can I add a SATA drive to a Windows 7 machine which is in standby mode? The hardware supports hot-plug. Could pulling the drive out while in standby corrupt the data on the drive (unflushed caches, ...)? Does Windows flush before standing by? How about swapping a drive with another drive of different kind (SSD - mechanical disk) and size, also while in stand-by. Could the OS when waking up believe that the old drive is still there, and write to it and thus corrupt it, since the new one has different partitions and data?

  I have 5 web servers (Apache/mod_perl) behind Amazon EC2 Elastic Load Balancing, when I deploy codes to the web servers, I am doing this.. For each machine, shutdown the Apache Update the code Start over the server and proceed to the next server I think when my server is shutdown, ELB will not distribute request to my server, but how about the request still serving? I think a better approach is Stop accepting new request from ELB Sleep for sometimes, shutdown web server only if all requests are responded Update the codes Start the server again But how to perform (1) and (2) from my local sever? Do I need to use AWS API? or other easy way to do it? Thanks.

  I am using pnp4nagios along with the nagios. Everything seems to be integrated properly - I have "extra action" icons close to every host and service which links to pnp4nagios graph. However, when I am going to the https://x.x.x.x/pnp4nagios/ it always change the url to the: https://x.x.x.x/pnp4nagios/graph?host=webhost01 How Can I turn off this behaviour? I would like to see on /pnp4nagios/ collected graphs from all servers.

  Is there a way of getting per process I/O statistics on AIX, i.e. to get current disk I/O rate of a process? Commands like iostat, nmon, topas etc. can't display such data. Filemon also doesn't help. Actually, what I would need is something much like iotop(1) command on Linux. Update: it seems there is no builtin command(s) to do this. I will most probably make my own by using the SPMI API.

  I have to maintain a system (debian) on which several users are allowed to install programs - so I would like to log, for example, if anyone executes "apt-get install" or "apt-get purge", so I can keep track of manually installed packages..   Any idea why grapgh is a shown? It i two pfsense boxes and I have not looked into where they ping to and if it is related to the server they ping. Trafic graphs are following a normal 24 hour cycle and not related to either of the latency graphs Img1: High frequent ulteration in latency. Just started a few days back. Peaks are not perfectly regular but varies from 40min to 1hour Img2: This is a different router on another internet connection.   So after connecting to a vnc server via vnc viewer to my desktop (remotely), Is it possible to know whether the monitor connected to the CPU is switched ON or not. Simply put, from command prompt how do you know whether monitor is ON/OFF from command line. Here, Basically I am bit worried about privacy as my monitor can be viewed by anyone while accessed remotely. Any solution? Obviously there is a option to switch off the monitor while starting the vnc server at remote side but I am looking for a better solution to control monitor(possible??) remotely. Thanks!

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones. Is there a UNIX tool that takes a selection parameter (id attribute or XPath), reads HTML from stdin and prints to stdout the subtree based on the selection? Assuming you would want to block access to Yahoo (e.g http://www.yahoo.co.jp, http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.yahoo.co.in), you would ideally want to block all of the above URLs, if I use a regular expression and try to search something called yahoo it seems to get blocked. We are just interested in applying rules which would be most commonly used across all companies (e.g. social networking sites like facebook, orkut), porn sites (e.g. sex), gaming sites (games), movie & song download sites, and sites where they can upload data (e.g. rapidshare) What would be the common set of effective rules in achieving the above?

  As the title says, the mpstat command, executed on Slack 13.0 continuously shows almost no processor utilization of any sort. In fact none of the output ever seems to change at all. The system is dual processor board with two hyperthreaded P4 Xeons. • Automatically reboot Windows8 if no internet activity

  I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

  I have a custom script that is querying a metric port for an application that I'm running and submitting parsed values to ganglia via gmetric. The script runs every minute, so I submit the data to ganglia using the following gmetric options: /usr/sbin/gmetric -g ec2 -s positive -t uint32 -d 600 -n "$NAME" -v $VALUE -x 60 But for some reason there are still gaps in the graphing data: Is there something in my formatting that is preventing the dmax/ttl of the last metric received from being honored? Is there anyone who does custom metric collection that has run into this problem before that can shed some insight or provide some tips as to how to best correct this?

• Need recommendations for a hardy scanner that has a robust feeder tray

  In the early days of our company all our information came in on paper and all of what we sold was on paper. Because of this we literally rent our an old bank vault to house the millions of sheets of paper that, some say, still contain relevant information. That being said, I'm looking into purchasing some hardware capable of scanning all these documents and converting them to pdf. Being new at this level of digitization I would like to ask for recommendations for accomplishing this task. Most of this material exists as separate bound studies/articles/etc. Someone would have to remove the bindings and be able to load many pages at a time and have the scanner feed them all through and convert them to a single pdf (single pdf per study/article/etc). If you have any recommendations I would very much appreciate hearing about them, thanks.
