• SAN with iSCSI-Target Performance Horrendous

  We have a poor man's SAN setup in a 1U Ubuntu server running iSCSI-Target with two 300GB drives in RAID-0. We then are using it for block level storage for virtual machines. The hypervisor is connected to the SAN via gigabit on a dedicated VLAN and interfaces. We only have a single virtual machine setup and doing some benchmarks. If we run hdparm -t /dev/sda1 from the virtual machine, we get 'ok' performance of 75MB/s from the virtual machine to the SAN. Then we basically compile a package with ./configure and make. Things start ok, but then all the sudden the load average on the SAN grows to 7+ and things slow down to a crawl. When we SSH into the SAN and run top, sure the load is 7+, but the CPU usage is basically nothing, also the server has 1.5GB of memory available. When we kill the compile on the virtual machine, slowly the LOAD on the SAN goes back to sub 1 figures. What in the world is causing this? How can we diagnosis this further? • Xenserver 5.5 U2 a bit unstable with an unstable W2003 VM

  In the last week I had to reboot the host system twice and the second one by means of the power button. The system is a Dell PE 6950 (4 Opteron dual core, 2,8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, 900 GB disk in a RAID 10 array composed by 4 450GB 15000 rpm disks) with XenServer 5.5 U2. We're installing it and at now there are working in production a 2003 32 bit Windows server VM with 2 GB RAM, 3 vcpu and about 200 GB disk in 4 partition (12 GB boot, 20 GB program, 80 GB user data, 80 GB other data). The first time I was compressing many Windows 2003 folders (some tens GB by means of W2003 compressed folder option) from a Windows remote console and some hours before my colleague installed Backup Exec agent that was alredy installed and that required a reboot (that was pending). The console stopped responding, it was no more possible to connect by means of remote console or by means of the console of the XenCentre, it was still possible from the network to use the shared folder of the VM and the programs on it (2 db and a GIS program), but the print server didn't work any more and I couldn't give remote reboot from other domain controller hosts. I couldn't stop the virtual machine neither from the XenCentre, neither from the command line of the host also forcing the reboot. I had to reboot the host server. Yesterday it has been worst. I installed a template of another VM, CentOS 5.3 and then, put the DVD in the drive of the host. Then, before the install and after the boot I checked for defect the DVD and the W2003 VM began to respond slowly (I was connected by means of an administration remote console) the task manager showed only mid or low load, it is, only the first of the 3 vcpu was loaded (about 70%), while the other two were about at 20% and also the disk I/O was not so heavy. Then the users were not so happy because they couldn't any more use the MS word docs on the server. I immediately stopped the check of the DVD (to do that I had to force the stop of such Centos 5.3 VM), then some users could again use their docs, but other had still problems, so I decided to reboot the VM, but it doesn't stopped, neither from XenCenter, neither from command line, neither forcing the reboot. Then I tried to reboot of the host, but it didn't worked, neither from the XenCentre, neither from the host prompt (shutdown -r now as root: it told that it was shutting down, but then it didn't did that). So I had to power off by means of the power button of the server (before I tried some Magic SyS REQ, but I saw that Xen isn't compiled with this option enabled). What could you suggest about my problem, what can I look, search and see? In the W2003 VM logs there are no errors or warning to explain what happened. • Xbox360 Universal Media Remote - out of sync?

  Hi, I have the Universal Media Remote from Microsoft, which was included with my HD-DVD package. I've been using it for over a year to watch videos/DVDs on my Xbox360 and it saved me the hassle of navigating with the game controller (which turns itself off every 5 minutes).All of a sudden (it didn't fall or suffer any severe trauma), it does not communicate with the Xbox anymore: it is on, I replaced batteries several times, but the Xbox does not respond to commands. The TV does - volume, channels, etc. - but I need the Xbox functionality.As far as I can see, there's no way to sync the remote with the Xbox - it lacks that small sync button that the game controllers have.I called Microsoft Support and spoke for an hour to someone who, I guess didn't know what to do at all. Bottom line - since it's been over a year, they won't fix/replace it - I have to get a new one.Before I do (if I do), I need to know if there's anything I can do with the existing remote, and will I have the same problem with a new one (i.e. the problem is with the Xbox itself)?   hi there, i know that this has been answered many many times, so if someone wants to point me to another thread that answers my question specifically, that is fine... for right now, my searches aren't yielding many results. so i have a website like mysite.com that has a flash swf embedded in it and i go to www.mysite.com ... all of the sudden, things don't work properly. i would like to get to the bottom of this, because it's not like the page just "doesn't load" at all; it loads and i can only do certain things; as if certain functionality is disabled (might be url requests for specific urls etc). do i need to manage this in my control panel? i wouldn't assume so, because the site loads; just has a crippled functionality from within the swf. i was thinking it might have more to do with my crossdomain.xml file; could this be the case? thanks for any tips or suggestions.

• Lag in Windows 7 with Zepto Znote 6224W

  Hi! Why does my Zepto Znote 6224W Laptop with Windows 7 make these small laggy moves whenever I use it? First I installed Windows 7 64 bit because of the memorycap in Windows 7 32 bit, but soon I realized that the system was lagging randomly. It was very annoying whenever I listened to music, because of the sudden lags. Then I tried everything with drivers; Chipset, Soundcard, Graphicscard, and so on. No luck. I then installed Windows 7 32 bit and this reduced the amount of lags but they are still here. I haven't tried bios upgrade since my bios should be newest according to now the now bankrupt Zepto company. My specifications: Zepto Znote 6224W Intel T8300 Intel Chipset PM965 PC-5300 4gb Nvidia 8600M GT Zepto's rebranded bios: Phoenix Technologies LTD Z14ND06 - Date: 12/20/2007 Harddrive: 320 GB 5400 RPM which I replaced with a Kingston SSDnow 40 GB. No luck either. I haven't tried Windows Vista on the machine though, but I would like to keep Windows 7.

• ssh keys rejected each day

  I've had OpenSSH server running on my debian server for a couple weeks and all of a sudden now when I go to login the next day it rejects my ssh key and I have to manually add a new one each time. Not only that but I have the "tunneling with clear-text passwords" option enabled and the non-root (login with root is disabled) account for that is rejected too. I'm at a loss why this is happening and I can't find any ssh options that would explain it. --update-- I just changed debug level to DEBUG. • Microsoft Security Essentials & MsMpEng.exe hogging resources

  I've been using MSE for a couple months now, never had a single problem. All of a sudden the process "MsMpEng.exe" will randomly go crazy and hog all my system resources so I can't do anything unless I kill it in the task manager. (I've quit the program for now and my comp is running smooth). When I restart the program, reboot, whatever, it goes off and hogs all the resources again after a couple minutes. If I kill the process it will go away and then come back a couple minutes later and do the same thing. I've scanned with MSE, another antivirus and malware with no probs. Any ideas? Should I uninstall and find something else? The thing is I've liked it so far. I'm running Win7 64-bit. Also, I'm not running any other conflicting security programs. This is the only one on my PC right now. Windows Defender is also off.

• HP LaserJet 2550 has a carousel motor error

  I have a LaserJet 2550, and it's worked pretty good for a long time (except for some slowness a while back, spooling I think), but just recently it suddenly quit working. We moved this summer, but left it at our other place, and just recently when my Dad went over there to try to print something out, it didn't work. When you turn it on, you hear the fan give a false start (basically a quick pulse), and the carousel goes through its usual thing. Then it starts up in earnest like it's getting ready to print something. All of a sudden it just stops. Everything stops, and the three lower lights are steady. When I push the Go button, the Go light (bottom of the 3) turns off, but the other two stay on. I looked it up on the HP website and it says it is a carousel motor problem. I called HP, but they said it is out of warranty. I've opened the cover and held the switch with a screw driver so I could watch it, and it goes through its thing like I described (doesn't seem to make a difference whether the imaging drum is in or not), then when it stops it kind of seems to jump back a little bit (the carousel). I hope this all makes sense (I know you like details), and hopefully you also know what to do to fix it. Thanks.

• How can I restore my original IME Romaji input settings?

  the this one, Japanese IME on Windows: switch back to romaji input method (3) did not help. The problem seems the same. My Vista home premium version PC, I had been using Microsoft IME to use English and Japanese input using romaji henkan for a long time. One day, all of a sudden, first when I started up the PC, it has cap lock indicator ON. So, I press SHIFT key, CAP lock indicator is off!(This I have to do every morning.) Now when I want to type romaji input to change to Japanese, I switch EN English (United States) to "JP Japanese (Japan) and select input to hiragana input. It worked until that day. But now when I set to input romaji for hiragana as I used to do and start typing, then it shows Japanese hiragana directly on the display just as keyboard setting as Japanese ???109???????? as shown in Wikipedia JIS keyboard. And I cannot show hiragana as I wanted ( I can convert to Kanji OK) etc. by hitting space key. But its key board arrangement is what I never learned. Other thing I found is when I hit "`" key, it switches between hiragana and alphabet. When I see Control panel setting it is the same setting as I have seen. Please suggest me a solution to get the original setting for IME input mode as I used to do. John K.

• Mac Mail sent messages not in sent folder

  Hi. My powerbook G4 has been lobbying for a furlough recently, and its latest prank is to not show sent messages in my sent mailbox. I have always had a copy of every sent message, and now, for some unknown reason, I can only see sent messages from May 7 and earlier. When I did a test, and sent myself an email, it shows up fine in my inbox, but there's nothing in the sent folder. Weird. It also has the little arrow next to messages that I replied to in the inbox. I guess I'm going to have to cc myself on everything until I get this fixed. Also, it's got another new trick, which I'm assuming is unrelated, but I mention it here just in case it is: the battery says it's "good" and has a cycle count of 0, and a full charge capacity of 2139, but for some reason it's all of a sudden not charging when it's plugged in. It works fine when connected to the wall, but there is no battery life at all. Zip. Any thoughts? Is it just time for a new 'book? This one just got back from Apple, having its harddrive replaced for the fourth time (for free, but seriously, this thing is a lemon). Thanks so much, Elizabeth

• Tell VLC where to look for plugins.dat file

  I am trying to build vlc from source (I will include installation script below), but when I try to run vlc I get the following error main libvlc warning: cannot read /home/user/downloads/vlc3/vlc/src/.libs/vlc/plugins/plugins.dat (No such file or directory) Why is it even looking in that non existant directory? The plugins.dat file is in /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/. I tried export VLC_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/vlc/plugins/ But it still looks in that non existent path. I can create a symbolic link, but that is a terrible way to do it. If in 6 months I delete my downloads folder, all of a sudden my vlc will break. • Tomcat IIS 7 Integration gives 503 errors on all requests.

  Hi, After many attempts to install Tomcat on IIS 7, I finally managed to get it working. At least I think so :-S. I finally got the 500 errors away, by setting the correct permissions. • Slow Citrix connection related to mapped network drives

  I have this weird issue with Citrix being slow and maybe users just being a little dramatic, but I am curious as to why that happens. Let me give you a little bit of a background. Citrix is running off of Windows 2003 server, TSprofiles and file server were located on the same server, until recently. We have moved our file server over to a new server with tons of space. We have Citrix on one server, TSprofiles on another and file server on third. We are using logon scripts to map home drives, shared drive and etc. Now, up until we made the file server move, the logon process took several seconds and most users couldn't even notice logon script being executed as they logon. Now, it takes upwards of several minutes and users can see logon script being executed at a slow pace, one line at a time. The only new variable in this whole scenario is the new file server. All the servers are physically located in the same location and on the same subnet. So, I guess my question is, if anyone can explain why a sudden sluggishness? And any tools I can use to troubleshoot the issue? Thanks!

• Need to get SMTP server on MS Server 2003

  Long story short, client paid networking company to move their website in house. Now I have to figure out how to email out from their website even though they don't have an SMTP server. At least until I install one. Their email is hosted with Gmail right now (the client's domain through Google App for Your Domain). I changed my code to connect as one of their users "[email protected]" and send email. Worked great for about 12 hours. All of a sudden none of the automated emails are going out now, and google is sending the emails back saying that it is a permanent failure and Message Rejected. The link they direct me to, http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=69585 is telling me that our emails look like spam. They aren't. They are emails we send to out clients about the status of their applications. Seriously, they are NOT spam. So...long story short is out the window, sorry...but I need to get an SMTP server setup inside their domain that I can send emails out of. This thing won't need to receive emails ever, and really only needs 1 email account customercare. What can I do? Will I have to have the networking company open a port in the firewall? Is there one built into Server 2003?

• Windows, never "lose focus" of the current window

  I want the task bar to light up orange and never lose focus to anything. If I'm installing something and then go play a game at some point it will drop out to the finished instillation. Also, if installing multiple programs at once my 'next' button can all of sudden become "click here to install this crappy toolbar" of another program's install. Of course there are settings for some programs to not "lose focus" or "stay on top" but I really want windows to handle it. If its somehow an exe called say, Taskswtich.exe, I could possibly use Process Blocker however I'm assuming its part of a function call or some such. For XP I found this: How to disable auto focus of opened Windows applications? but what about Windows7? And this old post Preventing applications from stealing focus with a bunch of long answers that say "no". I'd appreciate this not being merged with a 4 year old question. I'd like to avoid 3rd party software. This is 2014, don't we know how to hack windows yet?

• Outlook 2007 font sizes

  Hello, Something really strange seems to have happened to my Outlook 2007. Everything was working fine for a long time now but at the end of today, all of a sudden, all of the fonts in Outlook are messed up. The font size of mails I write is huge (I am not zoomed in) and the font sizes of the buttons are big too, specifically the "Send", "To", and "Cc" buttons. I tried changing the font sizes through Outlook, but some of the buttons on the "Mail Format" tab in Options are not working, mainly the "Stationary and Fonts" button. I hit it but no window opens. This is all happening on my x64 machine. I took a look at my x32 machine, which also has Outlook 2007 installed and everything is ok there. Below is a link to an image comparing the broken, large font Outlook (top of picture) and the normal, working outlook. The text in the mails I compose is also abnormally large in the broken Outlook. Big font Outlook buttons. Any ideas? This came out of no where after a few months of no problems. Thanks.

• Problem setting up HP PhotoSmart C4783

  I am trying to get several PC's on a network to connect to my client's new wireless printer, the C4783. I initially installed the whole HP 'tsumami of software' the comes with the printer onto my laptop, connected to the printer over USB, and corrected it's networking config. My laptop now also can connect to and print on the printer over the wireless network, as is intended for all PC's. However, when I try and install the HP software on my client's netbook, the HP software cannot find the printer. Firewall was turned off during this time, so doesn't play a role. I tried re-installing all software, but I initially only got a "Repair" or "Uninstall". Choosing Uninstall triggers a lengthy process that ends with a sudden and forceful restart, after which the same "Repair" or "Uninstall" choices are present. Looks like uninstall doesn't. Any suggestions as to how I can begin diagnosing why my laptop has no problem connecting to the printer, but two others do? Wireless is unsecured, and no, nobody has to know where I am right now. :-)

• Webservice randomly dropping connections - possibly due to firewall nonevent data?

  I have a hosted webapp which requests data from a REST webservice in our office. Each page calls one (or several) webservices, which go from our host, via our firewall (a Watchguard Firebox) to a server in our office. All of a sudden, the app has dramatically slowed. We have determined that the webservice is timing out at random when called externally (it's fine when called within the office network). I'm pretty certain it's our connection which is dropping the webservice call, so I've written a quick php/curl script which calls the webservice over many iterations and shows the various timings. Below is an example output, showing both a failed and a successful call (with a 5 second timeout): http_code namelookup_time connect_time pretransfer_time starttransfer_time total_time 1 0 0.000096 0.0342 0.0000 0.0000 0.0342 2 200 0.000052 0.0332 0.1327 0.1751 0.1752 As per iteration #1 above, failed requests seem to be failing between connect and pretransfer. I'm not sure if this shows that the connection is successfully past the firewall, or could the firewall still cause an issue? Our firewall is showing a series of nondata event log messages for the relevant access rule. Our IT team tells me these are routine, although I can find no mention of these in Google. I'm not sure if this fits in between connect and pretransfer. Having elinated the webservice server (by testing internally) and the live webapp (by testing different code on different external servers, I am left suspecting the connection to the office. Could the firebox nondata events be causing a problem between connect and pretransfer?

• Internet slowed down because of SQUID Server setup

  Recently I have setup a squid server for our office. I have computer (A) with two ethernet cards, one for internet and the second one for local networkIt has Ubuntu server OS with squid-server and dhcp3-server installedI have added few iptable rules to work like a router and redirect all http traffic to 3128 port This link is my reference. Everything worked fine for 2 days. All of a sudden internet speed went down drastically. When I connected the internet cable to my laptop to test the internet speed it was fine. Again when I reconnected it back to computer A everything was normal. This happened 4 times in a week. Could anyone here please help me why the internet speed is going down and it becomes normal when I reconnect the cable. EDIT: Rebooting the system (computer A) didn't make a difference. I have changed iptables so that http traffic doesn't redirect to 3128 port any further, still no change in the internet speed. I think the problem is not with squid but with something else. • I can't connect to my network, except in safe mode

  My laptop cannot connect to my network all of a sudden except in safe mode. When it boots, it will show the networks available in the tray popup, but if I click connect on any, it says "Unable to connect" and the troubleshooter is useless. Shortly thereafter all the networks disappear. I have tried removing IPv6 support as I have seen that cause problems. No joy. I've also tried removing the wireless network adapter in Device Manager and reinstalling it, also no joy. I've also tried attaching a USB wireless adapter, and it has the same problem. If I boot in safe mode, then it has no problems at all. Three other devices in the house connect fine, so I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the router. Any ideas what to check next? I am running Win7 Ultimate on a 2GHz Quadcore with 8GB RAM with a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card. EDIT: RE wired connections: What is very weird is that if i plug in a wired connection, then not only does it connect via the wired connection, but the wireLESS also starts working perfectly. And a soon as I unplug the wire, then the wireLESS stops working again! So it seems the wireless is right now working only in safe-mode, or when a wired connection is also plugged in.

• Apache is spawning more and more processes!!

  We have a LAMP setup that is working prety good for half a year. All of a sudden today the apache server (mysql servers are not on this box) started to die. It seems to have started to spawn more and more processes over time. Eventually it will consume all the memory and the server would just die. We are using prefork. In the mean time what we are doing is just added more ram and increased the MaxClients and ServerLimit parameter to 512. We're just prolonging the crash. The number still goes up slowly. Maybe in a day, it would reach that limit. What is going on? We only have around 15-20 request per second. We have 1Gb memory and it's not half used, there's no swapping going on. Why is apache creating more and more processes? It's almost like theres a leak somewhere! The database boxes are fine, they are not causing a delay to requests. We tested some queries everything is quick!

• Upstart: cannot run as root

  I have made this upstart script, which starts a Node.js service. But all of the sudden the service has stopped, and upstart has failed to restart it. Now that I am trying to start it manually, it fails to recognize my service: start: Unknown job: queue The script is properly placed in /etc/init, and should have the correct rights: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 200 Aug 7 13:30 queue.conf When I check the config file with init-checkconf however, it says that it is not able to run as root: root@production1:~# init-checkconf /etc/init/queue.conf ERROR: cannot run as root What causes this error and how do I solve it? • What does this strange network/subnet mask mean?

  I'm configuring a new ASA 5505 for deployment as a VPN endpoint in a remote office. After configuring it and connecting the VPN, I get the following messages: WARNING: Pool (10.6.89.200) overlap with existing pool. ERROR: IP address,mask <10.10.0.0,93.137.70.9> doesn't pair 10.6.89.200 is the address I configured for the ASA. It has the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The ip address 10.10.0.0 corresponds to one of our subnets, but it certainly wouldn't have a subnet mask of 93.137.70.9. That looks more like a public IP address (and resolves to an ADSL connection somewhere). I am sure if we had such a subnet configured, that it would indeed overlap with 10.6.89.200. There is no reference to 93.137.70.9 in the config of this ASA or our head office ASA. Can anyone shed light on what is going on here? The sudden appearance of a strange subnet mask is a bit alarming.

• Apache2.2 not responding on Windows 7 desktop

  Afternoon! I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't ever time out, the browser just keeps on waiting for a response, which makes me think it's something blocking communication with Apache. Interestingly though, if I stop Apache the requests fail immediately. The Apache service is running, and using netstat I can see it listening on port 80 as configured: TCP 127.0.0.1:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING If I stop the Apache service, that line disappears. I have an entry within my hosts file for each VHost I'm trying, all pointing to 127.0.0.1. Each VHost is configured to *:80. Nothing however is getting recorded in the access or error (at debug level) log files. I've verified the file paths are correct, even though they were never changed. Neither is anything getting recorded within Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however I hadn't been using it for a couple of days prior so I don't believe it's the config change. I have performed a syntax check to be sure, and when starting from the command prompt no errors are reported there. I do have Windows Firewall running, however I've verified the Apache rule is correct and tried turning it off to ensure that wasn't the problem. I've reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've also tried using a different port. I'm completely lost for ideas now.
