  Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to write some .htaccess page that makes the server use an index.php file in a SINGLE directory as the index file for every directory/sub-directory on my server, rather than placing the exact same index.php in 200+ directories. If my description isn't clear, what I essentially mean is: /files/index.php is to be used as the index for, for example, /files/morefiles, as well as the index for all directories and sub-directories within /files/, even though those directories would not have an index file themselves.   My colleagues mark folders on mac server using their macs, and sometimes tell me i've marked those folders in green. I'm wondering if there's any mean to see what colours got assigned to what folders using PC. I'm connecting to the server using smb/ssh. Solution can be either windows or linux. Please not i'm not about to change those markings, neither looking for some robust solution, just quick hack.

What is the best method to deploy software that has no .msi installer, but has switches for silent installs All I can think is to use startup scripts (that will do detect-install/uninstall/upgrade), but I was wondering if there are existing wheel designs in this area...   Hello everybody, is there any utility to limit the network throughput of a process after it has been launched ? Simple example: you note that a user takes all your upload bandwidth using scp and you'd like to limit the rate or decrease the priority of the transfer. I guess i could use a combination of iptables/tc or pf to achieve that, but i was wondering if there is a "one-shot" tool available (like tickle with a --pid option ^^) ? Regards, Jean-Baptiste

• Streaming from a second computer

  I play games on my laptop, and they run at about 30-45 fps, which is bearable for me. But when I try to stream, the frame rate drops to 20 or lower, which is unplayable for me. I have a second computer though (a Mac, the laptop is Win7), and I'm wondering if there is anyway to stream the game content (onto Twitch.tv) from my laptop using my Mac. Is this possible, and how would I go about doing it?

• Determining temporary Internet file type (Chrome)

  My broadband speed is sometimes lacking, and therefore it can be difficult to view Flash streams of programmes. So my idea is to start a Flash stream, let it run to completion no matter how long it takes, and then view the temporary .swf file. I've discovered the location of my Google Chrome temporary files. However, there is no file type associated with these files. Therefore, I'm wondering if the idea above will work, and how can I retrieve only .swf files?

• Response code for Chinese spiders? [closed]

  My server is being "attacked" by Chinese spiders that don't respect the rules in my robots.txt. They are being very aggressive and using a lot of resources, so I'm going to set up some rules in nginx to block them by user agent. Question: which response code should I return, 403, 444 (empty response in nginx) or something else? I'm wondering how the spiders will react to different status codes. What's the best practice?

• Do newer physical interfaces make a better linux firewall?

  At work we use an old (10 year old) linux box with 4 interfaces to act as router/firewall for the network. There's never really been a need to change it since it's stable and handles all our needs. I'm wondering, though, would replacing the network interfaces with newer ones provide a benefit? Besides the obvious bandwidth increase (eg. 100MBit to GBit), would there be a latency reduction, or do newer cards pretty much do the same thing as old ones?

  Hi, I'm wondering if there's a way to not show hidden applications in the list of running apps when using Command-Tab ? LiteSwitch (http://www.proteron.com/) sort of does what I want, except it grays out hidden applications, but I want them to not appear at all. I use hidden applications as a sort of 'I'll get to later, or don't bother me now' method, so it would be great if Command-Tab could honor that (the same was Expose does). Thanks.

• Can't solve DNS problem on windows XP machine

  I have a machine that can't access the server. I tried pinging the using the ip address of the server and it work great. But when I use the name to ping the server it gives a timeout. My nslookup cannot resolve the DNS servers but others in my company can. I am wondering is there something that can cause these behavior. I can access the internet though with their names.
