• How to reverse file ownership and permission settings

  I installed LAMP and WordPress on my system a week ago. Since I couldn't create Child Themes in WordPress and work with PHP folders for my other projects collocated in var/www without using Nautilus I wanted to solve the permissions issue. I hoped to bring a solution carrying out the commands on this page for my WordPress folder: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/FileSystemPermissions. This allowed me to play with any file in the folder like creating and modifying .css files through WP Admin, etc. But after a restart I discovered that I can't change DNS settings of my network connections in the list anymore because it is asking me the root password and even though I enter the password it doesn't let me do the action giving "insufficient privileges" error. Can you help me correct the mistake I possibily made during the configuration and, maybe, configure again the permission and ownership settings for var/www/somefolder as it is adviced to be configured under general circumstances? • Kansas City SQL Saturday 2012: BBQ Crawl

  The next Kansas City SQL Saturday is coming up on August 4th.  We’ll have the usual SQL Saturday goodness: lots of technical sessions, great networking events and a fantastic speaker dinner.  And we’ll have the Third Annual Kansas City SQL Saturday BBQ Crawl.  On Friday afternoon we’ll visit a few BBQ places in town.  We tend to order big sampler plates and just share everything around.  It’s a great way to try a variety of styles.  This year we’ll be hitting an all new selection of BBQ joints. You don’t need to be a speaker to attend.  However the call for speakers is open until June 28th (hint, hint).  Locals and out-of-towners are all welcome. If you’re interested in attending send me an email and I’ll get you added to the list. We finish in plenty of time to get you to the speaker dinner – as if you could eat any more.

  I'm just an average Joe when it comes to computing (maybe less then the average Joe) but I hate tap-to-click. In system and settings there is no touchpad tab? Is it true that this has been fixed? I'm using Dell inspiron N5110 xinput list: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? PS/2 Generic Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)] This is really strange because Dell is one of the top manufacturers in laptops and Ubuntu one of the top distros in Linux and Canonical claims that they are working closely with Dell.

• PAE on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having trouble using PAE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit. I recently upgraded from 4 to 8gb of RAM but PAE doesn't appear to have picked this up. When I run "grep --color=always -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo" I get pae in the list. When I run "dmidecode | grep Size | grep MB" Installed Size is 3825 but the Maximum Total Memory Size: 8192 MB. When I check the BIOS it says there is 8192 MB available and the computer fully supports I have followed everything I can find on the internet (including this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE) and nothing is working. My Computer is a Toshiba Portege m750. It has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Bought in 2009 Thanks, JamesStewy

• EAV - is it really bad in all scenarios?

  I'm thinking to use EAV for some of the stuff in one of the projects, but all questions about it in stackoverflow end up to answers calling EAV an anti pattern. But I'm wondering, if is it that wrong in all cases? Let's say shop product entity, it has common features, like name, description, image, price, etc., that take part in logic many places and has (semi)unique features, like watch and beach ball would be described by completely different aspects. So I think EAV would fit for storing those (semi)unique features? All this is assuming, that for showing product list, it is enough info in product table (that means no EAV is involved) and just when showing one product/comparing up to 5 products/etc. data saved using EAV is used. I've seen such approach in Magento commerce and it is quite popular, so may be there are cases, when EAV is reasonable?

• What is a *slightly* less extreme equivalent to being "fluent" in a language?

  tl;dr: What is a less extreme (but still noticeable) alternative to the word "fluent", when saying e.g. "I am fluent in C++/Python/whatever?" I think I can call myself "fluent" in C#, because I know the language and runtime very well, and I'm very familiar with the .NET framework's APIs and classes, etc. I would like to claim the same thing for Python and C++. But while I can program in Python (I did so for an entire summer, making a website with Django), for example, I would not call myself fluent because my code isn't always "Pythonic" (e.g. using map/filter vs. list comprehensions), and I'm not too intimate with some aspects of the language and standard library yet (e.g. the introspection API, etc.). Is there a word or phrase I can use on e.g. a resume to describe what I know? I can think of "very familiar with", but is there a better word/phrase I can use?

  I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean? I've used SVN for C# & ASP.NET projects for a long time and haven't encountered any problems. What probably does this quote think I should have been watching out for?

• Why can't I get into my repositories?

  Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 by mistake and am having problems with some of my programs. They either don't work or they disappear from view on the screen. The Repositories menu item in Synaptic Packages Manager is a case in point. The computer does nothing when I choose this item. I am locked out of unless I edit /etc/apt/sources.list. The rest of the application seems to work, however. Update Manager just flashes on screen then disappears without doing, as does Printing. How do I downgrade from a higher to a lower level repository? I need to downgrade from 10.10 to 10.04. Each time Ubuntu upgrades to 10.10 evil things happen and the operating system really gets messed up. I really do not want to have to erase and install my operating system all over again if I can help it.

• How to remove shells?

  I installed few shells that I wanted to try out on Ubuntu 12.04, but none of them worked at all. It could be that I installed them all at the same time, meaning the OS didn't get a chance to work everything out, but either way, they didn't work. I would now like to remove them. The one's that I installed are Fluxbox, OpenBox, XFCE, and MATE. I installed them through the help of this site. Everything seemed to have been working properly until I actually tried to use the shells and nothing loaded at all. Except for Fluxbox, I think that one worked. I want to know of any way to repair or perhaps just remove the packages entirely. I might have already removed them because I did the apt-get remove command on all of them, but they were still in the list on the login screen.

• Wireless problems on HP

  I'm not able to enable Wireless using the hardware switch on my HP ProBook4430s. Because of this the Enable Wireless option is greyd out and I cannot enable it. The greyd out option can be seen in the screenshot below. The results of iwconfig for my system are as follows, lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off eth0 no wireless extensions. Also I tried to do the following, sudo ifconfig wlan0 up but I got an error as below, SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill Also the result of sudo rfkill list all for my system is as follows, 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: hp-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 3: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no How do I fix this problem? • How to setup an intranet in ubuntu using wifi?

  I want to set up a VPN on my laptop but I don't know what and how to set it. My requirements are : Intranet with a customizable list of shared folders. Intranet outsourced via computer wifi. Possibly assigning individual private IP addresses to all connected. Facility to share internet (if hassel free). Can I do this using Gnome Network Manager or do I need another program? I'll be happy even if I get one folder to share for the time being and no internet if I could only outsource one file/folder.

  I can't believe I'm actually asking this, but what are some good, cheap tablets that can run Ubuntu? I'm considering getting a tablet, but I don't really want an expensive one like an iPad. And I love Ubuntu. So what tablets are out there that are cheap, but can also run Ubuntu 12.04 without much lag if it's installed after purchase? Personal anecdotes would be appreciated! • What Application Indicators are available?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using the Unity interface. Unity is working quite well so far but I really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets are useful for viewing quick info. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get this info onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know one then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found.

I am trying this command in terminal but its not working. sudo apt-get install g++-4.7 Reading package list... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package g++-4.7 E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'g++-4.7' But I find gcc was there with Ubuntu 14.04 installation itself. How could I install g++ in ubuntu 14.04 and any version of g++ abouve 4.7.2 is fine with me.

  Which languages have compilers able to emit plain standard C/C++ code? For a start: Haxe // uses Boehm GC Haskell (JHC) Haskell (old GHC) // -fvia-c, removed recently (emitted code is super ugly) Clay ATS Cython RPython (Shed Skin) // experimental RPython (PyPy) Python (Nuitka) // although author claims there are no speedups Common Lisp (ECL) COBOL (OpenCobol) Scheme (Chicken) APL // So far I've not found working implementation available for free download Ur/Web // GCC-specific output, and intended to be used only for web developments (included for completeness only) I'd like to build comprehensive up-to-date list but found only these ones so far. I've tested only Haxe and it works pretty well and quite fast. What about other ones? What is your expirience? How much ugly is generated code? Update. Any language chains (e.g. X - Scheme - C) will be perfectly OK as answer if its use is practical enough and suited for production use.

• play sound from different applications on different output devices (speakers, headphones)

  I want music (played e.g. via Audacious) to be played on speaker system, and all other sounds produced by other applications (including ubuntu sound effects) to be played on headphones. My computer has sound connectors at its back, and also connectors on its front panel. When I connect both headphones and speakers, only headphones work (I take it, the front connectors take precedence?). Should I purchase another sound card (in addition to the motherboard-integrated sound I have)? When I go to Audacious output settings, I see only the ouput plugin selection list, with PulseAudio selected and options like ALSA, OSS4 etc. But there's no facility to select particular output device (and I guess it wouldn't magically appear even if I had the second soundcard). Is this at all possible to bind specific application to particular output device?

• Custom trackpad mapping doesn't work for all applications

  I found out I could invert my trackpad scrolling, so as to work more like the OS X "natural scrolling", which I liked better. To do that, I run the following command on startup: xinput set-button-map 11 1 2 3 5 4 7 6 Where 11 is the touchpad id (found with xinput list and xinput test 11). This inverts the vertical and horizontal two-finger scrolling, and works fine in Terminal, Chrome, Document Viewer, etc. However, it doesn't work in Nautilus and some applications such as the Update Manager, as they keep the usual mapping. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Why does this mapping work for some applications but not for others? I know there is software I can download to do the same, but this method seemed "cleaner". Thanks

• (Not) Making a Splash with Visual Studio

  This post is just a quicky to remind me of a Visual Studio switch that I found interesting/useful. If you are interested in such things, there are a number of command line switches that can be used with Visual Studio. One that does not appear on the list linked to above is the "nosplash" switch.  This switch disables the splash screen when starting Visual Studio, taking you directly into the IDE. Close Visual Studio and then add /nosplash after ...devenv.exe in the target of whichever shortcut you use to start Visual Studio. Starting Visual Studio now should now be quicker, possibly saving precious seconds that you could put to use elsewhere!

• 12.04 sound keeps auto-muting when idle

  I just installed 12.04 on an HP8510W. Everything works fine except for one weird behavior which I have noticed. When ever there is no audio playing, the audio mute indicator on the laptop is on. As soon as I start playing a you tube video the mute indicator turns off and I get sound. Here is my pulse audio output which says that the sink is suspended because it is idle: Welcome to PulseAudio! Use "help" for usage information. list-sinks 1 sink(s) available. index: 0 name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo> driver: <module-alsa-card.c> flags: HARDWARE HW_MUTE_CTRL HW_VOLUME_CTRL DECIBEL_VOLUME LATENCY DYNAMIC_LATENCY state: SUSPENDED suspend cause: IDLE I tried running alsamixer, but I don't see the auto-mute option.

So when I select Facebook from the list given in Online Accounts a window opens up for me to authorize access and a url opens saying: Success SECURITY WARNING: Please treat the URL above as you would your password and do not share it with anyone. Although after this nothing happens... When I open the messenger nothing comes up and in Online Accounts it still asks: Please authorize Ubuntu to access your Facebook account... but I have already given permission... Please help me out.   My secondary education was primarily focused on the sciences (Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics), but now I work primarily as a software developer. I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years. GitHub and StackExchange profiles seem like as important resume items as anything, yet I don't know how to list them on a resume, or whether they are appropriate at all. So what is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like?

• Booting Ubuntu shows only cursor, no desktop features

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu and have been trying since 2010 on my Win XP (2006-2008 I don't know which year's version exactly). I'm trying to get rid of XP and every time I install Ubuntu it doesn't work. I've tried all the options on the install list from Wubi and from inside the installer. I've tried a lot of different stuff and all it will load is a mouse cursor and a black screen. Please do help out with suggestions/advice. Thanks in advance.
