  • Ubuntu Kernel Panic on Inserting Network Cable

    I've been having a recurring kernel panic with my Ubuntu 9.04 installation (see other posts by me). Today, I was fiddling around trying to get some cable attached when the system panicked. Looking at the layout, the only cable in the vicinity was the network cable. Upon further investigation, it seems that the system reliably panics whenever I insert a network cable. Removing the cable does not cause the panic. How do I stop the system panicking when I insert the network cable? If more information is needed, please add comments/answers and I'll post the required data.

  • Removing QWERTY Keyboard Layout Permanently

    Following the instructions in this thread, I added the Dvorak layout to the Regional and Language Options control panel, set it as the default keyboard layout and removed the US (QWERTY) layout. However, even though I removed the QWERTY layout, it still appears in my language bar, and my system defaults to it in every new window. This persists after a log-out/log-in and even a system restart. How do I remove the QWERTY keyboard layout from my system permanently? Alternatively (if outright removing QWERTY is just impossible), can I get Windows to default to Dvorak instead of QWERTY for new windows?

  • Rendering composite/SVideo input with GraphEdit (comp./svid. source for crossbar)?

    Does anyone know how to form a GraphEdit graph to render composite/SVideo input (especially for a Hauppauge or AIW card)? Google (and Google Images) finds only results focusing on rendering the TV tuner which is already simple enough. The tv-tuner-in pins connect to the TvTuner/TvAudio source, but nothing seems to be able to connect to the Composite/SVideo pins. I have looked through the filters and could find no sources to connect to the Composite/SVideo input pins of the crossbar; GraphEdit always complains that they are not compatible.

  • KVM switching on the cheap

    I have a machine at home for my personal use. I also have a machine for work. I have a pair of DVI monitors. An ideal set up for a KVM switch. Sadly the cheapest switch I can find that will switch 2 DVI monitors is nearly £300. However, I can get, for just £40, a switch for a single monitor. Is there any reason why I couldn't employ 2 of these much cheaper switches? My thought was to have the keyboard, mouse and one of the monitors in one switch and just the 2nd monitor in the 2nd switch. Logically, I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work, but I have no real background to be able to say, definatively, whether or not it would. It it makes any difference, both machines are running Win7. Appreciate any thoughts. -- Stuart

What is the problem with dmenu?

  • Is there a way to get Chatzilla in the Windows 7 "jumplist" for Firefox?

    Windows 7 has a feature called "Jumplists" which, in the Start menu, adds a kind of context menu alongside the selected app listing things such as files recently or frequently used with that app, and tasks the app can perform: Often I use Firefox's add-on IRC client, Chatzilla but use Chrome for browsing. I have to start the Firefox browser, run Chatzilla from the menua, then close the browser again. It seems this is exactly the kind of thing Jumplists are for. Is there a way to customize them in Windows 7? Or does Firefox offer a way to customize its own Jumplists?

  • OpenGL support no longer available

    I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on?   • Windows not remembering default audio device?

    I prefer the audio output on my computer to use the standard audio jack output due to volume issues. But I am using a monitor with HDMI. I have chosen to set the default audio device to be "Speakers" But every time I reboot the default audio device is the HDMI Output again. I am running Windows 7 64bit. Why does it not remember the default device? (I do shutdown and boot up properly without errors.)

  • Why screen freezes in Windows 7 and Vista?

    On Windows 7 and Vista I use auto-hide task bar and turn off graphic card after 1-2 minutes. When I want to use my desktop again screen freezes sometimes for 10 seconds. What I do does not effect anything immediately but cursor moves. For example if I click Firefox bookmark it opens when screen unfreezes. This happens at any of my computers and about a month after new installation. I don't think that problem is related with the drivers.

  • Live Camera capturing and printing software

    I'm running a Haunted House exhibit at my school to raise money, and I had the idea of taking pictures of the "victims"/students remotely with my Sony DSLR camera and then printing and selling the photos as the students exit the haunted House (much like amusement parks do with roller coasters as you go down the final drop, or when one takes pictures with Santa Claus at the mall). Does anyone know of any free/relatively inexpensive software that would allow me to do this? I would prefer Mac-compatibility, but it's not a requirement.

  • Black Screen on Logon (windows 7 home premium)

    i have been having some trouble with a dell Xps 15 laptop that i recently purchased. it is under a month old, and a problem has occurred, upon logging on just after start up, the computer will just sit on a black log on screen (with the mouse still visible and active) for a few minutes. it is extremely annoying, especially when im in a rush. the laptop is under a month old. So far, i have tried to update the drivers, all windows update, and still, nothing. also, it doesnt seem to do it when i log into safe mode, or if it does, it will do it for less than 10 seconds, then load the desktop (in normal boot, it usually takes a few minutes). i have also run a number of the inbuilt diagnostics, but found no errors. i want to avoid having to do a system restore for as long as i can. does anyone know anything that can help? (the laptop is running a 500gb SSD, 2gb Nvidia 640m, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i7 quad core with 8 threads) thanks.

    We're using CentOS and sendmail's m4 configuration. How do I set domains where emails should be delivered? I only want two domains, and would like email to all other domains blocked.   • How to open semicolon delimited CSV-files in US-version of Excel

    When I double-click on a .csv file, it is opened in Excel. The csv-files have columns delimited with semicolons (not commas, but also a valid format). Using a German Windows/Excel setup, the opened file is displayed correctly, the columns are separated where the semicolons existed in the csv-file. But when I do the same on an (US-) English Windows/Excel setup, only one column is imported, showing the whole data including the semicolons in the first column. (I don't have an English setup available for tests, users have reported the behavior) I tried to change the list separator value in Windows regional settings, but that didn't change anything. What can I do to be able to double-click-open those CSV-files on an English setup? EDIT: It seems to be the best solution not to rely on CSV-files in this case. I was hoping that there is some formatting for CSV-files that makes it possible to use them internationally. The best solution seems that I'll switch to creating XLS-files.     I got one of these for Christmas (this exact model): But it doesn't work very well with normal ceramic mugs as they're too thick and insulated. What I really want is a mug like this that fits well and transmits the heat from the warmer to my drink (so no air gaps or thick bases): Where can I get a mug like the one pictured above from? I like in the UK but don't mind ordering from overseas. Update: I've tried camping mugs but they all seem to be too wide. I will measure the base later and post exact dimensions.     By default, the function keys on my MacBook Pro control various hardware features and native operating system applications like the brightness of the LCD, Expose, or iTunes. I like these buttons and can use the fn button to take advantage of application Function keys when working with certain applications. Some service-type, background applications also have useful keyboard shortcuts. I tend to forget which keys are active at the moment and sometimes launch the wrong processes. Is there an application or operating system, native way of identifying all of the currently available keyboard shortcuts?

  • What does a red icon in XP's "Unlock Computer" dialog mean?

    A user was working from home and had a colleague turn on her computer so she could remote desktop to it. All worked fine, but when she came into the office and used her computer for a while then locked it the computer icon had a red screen, instead of blue. Like in the following mockup: Mockup of red computer screen. It didn't cause any problems and it went away when she rebooted, but I was intrigued to find out whether there was something that caused it or if it was just a windows oddity. I believe she just closed the remote desktop session (without really logging off) from home and then disconnected from the VPN before coming to the office. Any ideas?

  • How can I force Xbox Music to find music in all subfolders of my Music library?

    My music library is organized (roughly) like this: Music mp3 (original) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Tom) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Dick) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Harry) Artist/Album/Song ... etc. When I use the desktop Zune Software, it finds all of this music. However, the Xbox Music metro app only seems to find music in the "mp3 (original)" folder. How can I force it to find all of my music?

  • Can a Double-Density Floppy drive be swapped out for a High-Density drive?

    I'm trying to fix the floppy drive in my Roland MC-500. The floppy drive inside is a Matsushita DDF3-1 which doesn't seem to be in production anymore. The DDF3-2 is still available, however it is an HD drive. Does anyone know off the top of their heads if there is any issue with simply swapping the two drives? Could the power usage be different on the drives? Since the machine is expecting a 720k DD drive, are there any jumper settings to have the HD drive function as a DD drive?
