    Possible Duplicate: Can I connect a SATA-II hard drive to a SATA-I connection? Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port?   • How much data bandwidth can a 3G gsm cell tower can support?

    I was always wondering how many simultaneous users can a 3G tower supports with its data rates? I mean they advertise 28.8Mb/Sec for the 3G Data but in reality if a lot of people use it say 10 , it wont give 288Mb/Sec bandwidth. I didn't find anywhere where such information is published so I thought to ask here. Don' know why the cell operators keep it such a secret :)

    Is there a way in windows to save the layout of the workspace or is there other software that will allow me to have multiple programs start up and open ino windows at fixed resolutions / position on my displays? I envision something like how Photoshop works where you can save the position and type of menus that are open as different workspaces.

  • Printing from a Linux using an Acer Aspire Netbook

    A friend asked me to check why their Linux Acer Aspire netbook can't print to their HP printer. When I plugged in the USB cable, the a "balloon" popped up on the netbook saying it was installing the printer. But the printing does not work. I was able to get into a Settings area and click on Print Test Page but nothing happened. If it was Ubuntu, I would go into the Log File Viewer, but I couldn't find that on whatever Linux flavor the Acer is running. I couldn't even figure out how to get to a terminal (shell) window. I tried searching the HP and Acer sites but nothing seems to apply to this issue.

  • How good is PDF password protection?

    It appears that Word's password protection is not really good, at least until Office 2003, if I read this SU entry correctly. I'm under the impression that Acrobat's PDF password protection should be better (it says 128-bit AES for Acrobat 7 and higher). Is that true? Of course, it depends on the strength of the password used, but assuming I protect my PDF with a password like sd8Jf+*e8fh§$fd8sHä, am I on the safe side? Like, say, for sending confidential patient information - not really valuable, but potentially highly sensitive.

  • Xp SP3 - Non-Functioning

    Ok Here is a crazy problem, I have a HP dv6000 Laptop that can no longer hold a charge, so I hooked it up to my TV, bought a wireless mouse and keyboard and configured xp to run with the lid closed, It has medium to heavy usage mainly just streaming from sites like Netfilx, Hulu, ABC, etc. And playing movies I ripped of dvd. It ran fine for a while but recently it has been having some weird problems: Problem one: I used to use firefox but now when run it I can type but as soon as I click something it just shuts down, completely, I can't even close it unless I use taskmanager to do it. So I went and got google chrome which is better but still hit or miss, but never completely shuts down, I just can't click anything or type anything, or sometimes I just can't type anything or vice versa. Also when I open a new tab, and try to move back to my old one, it automatically closes the old tab when I click on it. Problem two: When using the internet I can't use any other application or anything windows (ie. Windows explorer) until I force quit all browsers with taskmanger. The reason I can't run anything is because I can't click on it. Problem three: When I try to play a movie (with vlc) Once it starts playing I can't click on anything, but I can use hotkeys, and once it stops everything is fine again. Well I hope somebody knows whats going on because I have no clue, If you need clarification or more info on something I would be happy to provide it...

    Using a VM I installed Windows 2008 Server x64 and as the image below shows, added the IIS Role full image and assigned all role features of IIS full image But if I have an ASP.NET (aspx) page that does (C#) Session["test-session"] = "A"; and read in other page I always get nothing! NOTE: I do have an entire ASP.NET web application, the example above is to be succinct and explicit on what is the problem I'm facing. Can anyone know what do I have to do to the Server, so I can use the Session variables? All help is greatly appreciated, Thank you

  • How can I leave the remote screen locked when I ARD/VNC/etc. to my Mac?

    I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

  • Western Digital My Book World drops off network

    Most of my storage in my house relies on a WD My Book World Edition 500GB network drive. I threw out the vendor crapware they give you to access it (a trial version of Mionet) after it starting nagging me to upgrade, and set it up as a standard network drive using Window's Map Network Drive. However, since then, it has been dropping off the network after 30 minutes of non-usage. The only way to get it back on is to switch it off and on again at the plug socket. Does anyone know what is causing this, and hopefully how to fix it? EDIT: it's the original "blue rings" version with the latest firmware.

    I am listing a couple of stuff that I want people to download for my school and remembered that some sites had directory browsing done with cool little icons displaying the file types. I wanted to do this myself and felt that the default directory browsing of apache is just too plain and IndexOptions +FancyIndexing is a bit 'old'. Any nice jQuery based Web 2.0ish stuff out there for this particular purpose. The files are .debs, .exes, .iso, .zip etc. Thanks!

  • Mapping of memory addresses to physical modules in Windows XP

    I plan to run 32-bit Windows XP on a workstation with dual processors, based on Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, and triple channel RAM. Even though XP is limited to 4 GB of RAM, my understanding is that it will function with more than 4 GB installed, but will only expose 4 GB (or slightly less). My question is: Assuming that 6 GB of RAM is installed in six 1 GB modules, which physical 4 GB will Windows actually map into its address space? In particular: Will it use all six 1 GB modules, taking advantage of all memory channels? (My guess is yes, and that the mapping to individual modules within a group happens in hardware.) Will it map 2 GB of address space to each of the two NUMA nodes (as each processor has it's own memory interface), or will one processor get fast access to 3 GB of RAM, while the other only has 1 GB?   • OSX root user keeps re-enabling itself on reboot

    Running Snow Leopard. Completely inexplicably, I seem to have enabled the OSX root user by accident. I honestly have no idea how it happened, but if memory serves I was looking at the login pane (with my two user accounts) when I must have hit something, and suddenly the two accounts were replaced by one that just said "Other..." Clicking the "Other..." account allows me to type a username and password, but neither of the normal two accounts would work. Since I never set a root password, it wouldn't let me in that way either. So I booted into Single User mode and ran these commands: /sbin/mount -uw / fsck -fy launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist dscl . -passwd /Users/root newpassword and that let me login as root. Then, I went to System Preferences, Accounts, Login Options, clicked Join, Open Directory Utility, and lastly in the Edit menu I clicked "Disable Root User" Great, I thought, back to normal. Except rebooting, I still only have the Other... account visible, and the root password I set beforehand doesn't work anymore! I have to reboot into Single User Mode and go through the whole process again just to get back into the system (as root) How on Earth did I accidentally enable this? I didn't even know about the Directory Utility before now. And most importantly, why the heck would it be re-enabling the root user on boot? Thanks in advance to any help!

  • How can I suppress /etc/issue without losing error messages?

    Is it possible to tell the ssh client to not print the connects of /etc/issue to stdout when connecting to a remote host, but to print out any other diagnostic (e.g. error) messages? Either using ssh -q or having LogLevel quiet in ~/.ssh/config suppresses the /etc/issue printing, but also turn off error messages. I've tried touching ~/.hushlogin as well - that stops /etc/motd being printed, but doesn't affect /etc/issue. The most obvious solution is just to remove /etc/issue, but company policy dictates the file be there with dire warnings about unauthorised access. This is non-negotiable. Unfortunately, I've got a bunch of scripts that run across quite a few hosts via ssh, and the log files are a) very large and b) full of legalese. Since quite a lot of stuff runs unattended, I don't want to lose any error messages that are printed.

  • Eclipse And Linux: Keyboard unusable after gnome-screen-saver

    Hi, I know this is not programming related. But I can't find any topics on Google or UbuntuForums. So the problem is: When gnome-screensaver starts on the moment Eclipse has the focus and I wake up again my laptop, Eclipse doesn't listen to keyboard-events. To solve this I have to change the focus to another program and then back to Eclipse. Than it works again. This isn't a real problem, but it would be nice if someone can solve it. Thanks

  • can't properly shutdown ubuntu and sound problem on HP mini 311 netbook

    hi, I recently bought a HP mini 311 netbook. I replaced its harddrive and installed ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I have encountered some very strange problem with its sound and shutdown/reboot. At times, when I start the computer, it will have no sound, on the GUI the sound is at max, but no sound is available. This sometimes also happen after after upgrades, hibernate, and toggling the wireless radio button. Strangely, when the sound is out the device will also refuse to be shutdown. If I shutdown the computer using the GUI, it will simply go back to the log in screen without actually shutting down. If I use "sudo shutdown 0", the computer will hang on the loading screen of the shut down process. I had to force the pc to shutdown by holding the power button down. usually (probably always) after I force a turn-off then start off again. the sound and shutdown become normal. I wonder if anyone have clues regarding to the cause of this problem. This the info about the computer: 1) installed ubuntu 10.04LTS RC, later upgraded to formal released version. 2) cat /proc/asound/version == "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21." however, when doing 'alsaconf' the version displayed is 1.0.23 any help is appreciated.   • Create MAPI profile for exchange 2007 without Outlook

    Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with newprof.exe utility but it is no longer available.
