• How i can create reusable component which contains assets in Flash CS5

  I need to create slideshow for gallery. And one thing that i don't know is how to create reusable components. For example i want to create 3 components ImageLoader, Dock(that consist drom ImageLoaders) and SlideShow(that consists from Dock and ImageLoaders). ImageLoader it is a container which loads image and while it loading showing some animation. Dock it is a container wich have few of ImageLoaders, it used to create Dock of thumbs images to chose. SlideShow it is a container wich have few of ImageLoaders, it used to preload images to ImageLoaders and the change them on mouse click. I need that all of this components was accessible fom action script, so i can create new instances of them. Example code: im1 = new ImageLoader('../im1s.jpg'); im2 = new ImageLoader('../im2s.jpg'); dock = new Dock(new Array(im1,im2)); ss = new SlideSHow(new Array(im1,im2),dock); ss.init(); Will be greatfull for help. • Guidance required: FIrst time gonna work with real high end database (size = 50GB).

  I got a project of designing a Database. This is going to be my first big scale project. Good thing about it is information is mostly organized & currently stored in text files. The size of this information is 50GB. There are going to be few millions of records in each Table. Its going to have around 50 tables. I need to provide a web interface for searching & browsing. I'm going to use MySQL DBMS. I've never worked with a database more than 200MB before. So, speed & performance was never a concern but I followed things like normalization & Indexes. I never used any kind of testing/benchmarking/queryOptimization/whatever because I never had to care about them. But here the purpose of creating a database is to make it quickly searchable. So, I need to consider all possible aspects in design. • Enforce link in Team foundation server bug work item for duplicates

  We have just started out with Team Foundation Server 2008 / Visual Studio Team System and we are pleased to find how we can export and modify work items to our needs. However, this last thing that would make the setup perfect for us has proved somewhat difficult: We have exported the Bug work item type and have made modifications to it to appear differently to different groups of users. We do, however, see a potential problem in non-developers reporting bugs which turn out to be duplicates. We would like to enforce that users who close a ticket with resolved reason:duplicate also creates a link to the bug which is perceived as the first bug report. I have looked at System.RelatedLinkCount, and put the rule <FIELD type="Integer" name="RelatedLinkCount" refname="System.RelatedLinkCount"> <WHEN field="Microsoft.VSTS.Common.ResolvedReason" value="duplicate"> <PROHIBITEDVALUES> <LISTITEM value="0" /> </PROHIBITEDVALUES> </WHEN> </FIELD> However, when I try to put anything in that scope, the importer tells me that System.RelatedLinkCount does not accept the rule, no matter what I put, but the rule above shows what I am trying to do (even though the most preferable rule would also check that the bug that I link to is not a duplicate as well, though this is overkill :P) Has anyone else tried to enforce rules like this in work items? Is there another approach to solving the same issue? I am thankful for any thoughts on the matter.

  Hi all, First of all, the site rocks. You can ask and get specific answers, mainly, for programming issues. This question is more generic. I studied Physics for my bachelors and Digital Image Processing for my masters, ended on September 2001. From then on I started working as a developer and software analyst. I worked, and working, witn C, C++, AIX OS, XP OS, MFC 4.21. I also did some data translations from EDIFACT to XML and viceversa. I trained users for the applications that I was running, I created documents (detailed design docs mainly), though most of the time I wrote, and I still write, code. Recently I applied for the best greek, graduate university for my MBA and they accepted me, starting on Jan 2011. I am a developer with no specific insight with the languages I work. I can be very productive with some subsets of the languages that the companies I worked for use, though this is a limited thing for a developer. If I get my MBA I can be a semi-businees analyst ot consultant, as I am now a semi-developer. The problem is that I can do some but not all in a designated working area. What should I do from here? Should I get my MBA and look forswitching industries? Should I read and excersise myself with new languages and frameworks? Should I be more focussed to the deligations from my current job (currently I work with MFC)? Just for the note, I am 32 and I feel I am wasting my time. I am not getting the best that I can get from is current position (and I work here for 3+ years). Thanks all, Sun

• whats a sure shot way to make sure objects appear correctly positioned on stage

  Hi, I've being having a lot of trouble recently getting objects (UIComponents containing movieclips) to appear correctly in the right positions. For example, my current dilema is I have a container that is 3 layers deep. outer layer inner layer display layer This hiearachy was built in CS4 as a movieclip. In the display layer in CS4 I figured out where I want to place 16 different "box" movieclips. I dont want to create these boxes maunually at design time, instead I want to add them at run time. So I know what container I want to add my boxes to. I know what positions they "would" be at in CS4 environment. Whats the best way to add them in the correct locations with code? The "box" I'm trying to add in a movieclip held inside of a UIComponent. Is there a "rule of thumb" to do this type of thing? I'm sure I'm going to encounter this problem again and again and I'd like to just blow the problem out of the water once and for all with the "right way" to do this.

• Best Method For High Data Availability for SQL Server

  I have a web service that runs 24/7. Periodically it needs to refresh its database with data from another web service. There is a lot of data. It's tens of thousands of rows. (no, I don't mean this is a lot of data for SQL Server, just trying to point out that I expect it to take some time to come down the pipe from the other web service) The data refresh can take between 5 and 10 minutes. The actual data update portion of that is between 1 and 2 minutes. This means the service would be down for all intents and purposes when consumers would be requesting this type of data. I would like to implement a system where data is always available. The only thing that comes to mind is some type of system where I maintain two separate databases. I populate the inactive one, swapping it to active before populating the other one. I'm not sure I know the best way to do this. My current ideas just revolve around two sets of the schema in a single database (using views to access the active set) or two databases each with the same schema. The application would rotate between the two databases. Any suggestions from someone who has done something like this before?

  Puzzle for the R cognoscenti: Say we have a data-frame: df <- data.frame( a = 1:5, b = 1:5 ) I know we can do things like with(df, a) to get a vector of results. But how do I write a function that takes an expression (such as a or a > 3) and does the same thing inside. I.e. I want to write a function fn that takes a data-frame and an expression as arguments and returns the result of evaluating the expression "within" the data-frame as an environment. Never mind that this sounds contrived (I could just use with as above), but this is just a simplified version of a more complex function I am writing. I tried several variants ( using eval, with, envir, substitute, local, etc) but none of them work. For example if I define fn like so: fn <- function(dat, expr) { eval(expr, envir = dat) } I get this error: > fn( df, a ) Error in eval(expr, envir = dat) : object 'a' not found Clearly I am missing something subtle about environments and evaluation. Is there a way to define such a function?

  Hello, I need to read a whole file into memory and place it in a C++ std::string. • JQuery click anywhere except certain divs and issues with dynamically added html

  I want this webpage to highlight certain elements when you click on one of them, but if you click anywhere else on the page, then all of these elements should no longer be highlighted. This is done by .append() and .prepend() What I suspected from debugging was that the page is not "aware" of the new elements that were added to the page dynamically. Despite the new, dynamically added elements having the appropriate class names/IDs/names/onclicks ect, they never get highlighted like the rest of the elements (which continue to work fine the entire time). I was wondering if a possible reason for why my approach does not work for the dynamically added content is that the page is not able to recognize the elements that were not present during the pageload. And if this is a possibility, then is there a way to reconcile this without a pageload? If this line of reasoning is wrong, then the code I have above is probably not enough to show what's wrong with my webpage. But I'm really just interested in whether or not this line of thought is a possibility.

• [C#] Dynamic user-interface, WPF or not?

  Hi, I'm currently working at a application that helps people understand how to do there job. You can see it as a personal coach that guides them trough all the steps they need to do that no normal person could keep remembering. In my previous application we had the ability to show the user up to 4 pictures (what proves to be more then enough). The application would load the data and see how many pictures where in every instruction and then sort out the picture in the best fitting way without messing up the scale and resolution of the pictures. This all was done with GDI+ and worked very well. Ofc, change is something that always happens, my bosses came up with some great ideas. So they want to be able to see movies on the screen, animated gif's, 3D models that can rotate or animate. So I think we had pushed GDI+ to it's limits and it's time to look for something different. I have heard and readed about WPF but have no experience with it. Is it even possible to do all what I ask in WPF? And what about the old picture-merging thing I wrote, can we also get it done in wpf? I tried to make some things working but I didn't went as smooth as I hoped. I'm also concerned about the fact that the interface needs to be dynamic, the one moment it should be showing picture with some text above it, the other moment it should be showing another text with a video under it. I would love to hear some opinions here and if you got some other suggestions I should look into pls tell me. Thnx in advance PS: If WPF is the choice, should I convince my boss to change to .net 4.0?

• Calling a jQuery plugin inside itself

  I am trying to create a comet like thing. I have a plugin that collects data from a php page. The problem is that i dont know how to call the plugin inside itself. • CSS to create curved corner between two elements?

  My UI has an unordered list on the left. When a list item is selected, a div appears on the right of it. I'd like to have a curved outer corner where the <li> and the <div> meet. See the white arrow in the image below. To extend the blue <li> to the edge of the <ul>, I'm planning to do something like this: li { right-margin: 2em; border-radius: 8px; } li.active { right-margin: 0; border-bottom-right-radius: 0; border-top-right-radius: 0; } Is there a better way to extend the <li> to the edge of the <ul>? Obviously, I'll include the webkit and mozilla border radius CSS as well. The main thing I'm unsure about is that outer corner underneath the bottom right corner of the active <li>. I have some ideas, but they seem like hacks. Any suggestions? NOTE that the <ul> is indicated in grey, but it would be white in the real design. Also, I'm planning to use Javascript to position the <div> correctly when an <li> is selected.

• Why are a visual studio project's command-line settings stored per user? Is it OK to check-in (and

  We're creating an application that understands some command-line parameters. There are some default's we would like to supply on the command-line when debugging, and these are easily set in the project settings as explained here. The thing is visual studio stores these settings in a *.csproj.user file, and the default settings for integrated source control do not check-in *.user files. We would like to just have these default command-line parameters in everyone's IDE when debugging this project. Often (but not always) when visual studio guides you into doing things a certain way it is for good reason. We probably don't want to just check-in someone's .csproj.user file... right? This question is has a few parts: Why does Visual Studio store this particular setting per user? Is there a way to alter this behavior? - Would doing so bring bad juju? Under these circumstances is it OK to check-in and share a .user file? Is there a better way to accomplish what we are trying to do here? Thank you -

• Should I be using Expression Blend to design really dynamic UIs?

  My company's product is, at its core, a framework for developing metadata-driven UIs. I don't know how to characterize it less succinctly than that, and hope I won't need to for purposes of this question, but we'll see. I've been trying to come up to speed on WPF, and have been building UI prototypes here and there, and recently I decided to see if I could use Expression Blend to help with the design of these UIs. And I'm pretty mystified at this point. It appears to me as though Expresssion Blend is designed with the expectation that you already know all of the objects that are going to be present in the UI at design time. But our program generates these object dynamically at runtime. For instance, a data row might be presented in a horizontal StackPanel containing alternating TextBlocks (for captions) and TextBoxes (for data fields). The number of these objects depends on metadata about the number of columns in the data row. I can, pretty readily, write code that runs through a metadata record and populates a StackPanel dynamically, setting up the binding of all of the controls to properties in either the data or metadata. (A TextBox's Width might be bound to metadata, while its Text is bound to data.) But I can't even begin to figure out how to do something like this in Expression Blend. I can manually create all these controls, so that I have a set of controls that I can apply styles to and work out the visual design of the app, but it's really a pain to do this. I can write code that goes through my data model and emits XAML for all these controls, I suppose, and then copy and paste it. But I'm going to feel really stupid if it turns out there a way to do this sort of thing in Expression Blend and I've dropped back and punted because I'm too dim to figure out the right way to think of it. Is this enough information for someone to try formulating an answer?

• Python finding substring between certain characters using regex and replace()

  Suppose I have a string with lots of random stuff in it like the following: strJunk ="asdf2adsf29Value=five&lakl23ljk43asdldl" And I'm interested in obtaining the substring sitting between 'Value=' and '&', which in this example would be 'five'. I can use a regex like the following: match = re.search(r'Value=?([^&>]+)', strJunk) >>> print match.group(0) Value=five >>> print match.group(1) five How come match.group(0) is the whole thing 'Value=five' and group(1) is just 'five'? And is there a way for me to just get 'five' as the only result? (This question stems from me only having a tenuous grasp of regex) I am also going to have to make a substitution in this string such such as the following: val1 = match.group(1) strJunk.replace(val1, "six", 1) Which yields: 'asdf2adsf29Value=six&lakl23ljk43asdldl' Considering that I plan on performing the above two tasks (finding the string between 'Value=' and '&', as well as replacing that value) over and over, I was wondering if there are any other more efficient ways of looking for the substring and replacing it in the original string. I'm fine sticking with what I've got but I just want to make sure that I'm not taking up more time than I have to be if better methods are out there.

• Detecting when a cell's detail-disclosure button has been clicked (when using a custom cell XIB)

It appears to work... but I think I would do better to actually UNDERSTAND what is being done there. Why isn't line #3 assigning the value TO something? cell = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"TVCell" owner:self options:nil]; (In fact, cell and tvCell aren't being used at all.) Why is line #4 assigning using tvCell when nothing has been put it in at all, yet? Why is line #5 nulling out the tvCell that I need? Why is "@property (nonatomic, assign) IBOutlet UITableViewCell *tvCell;" using assign, not retain? About the only thing I can't get working correctly is when I put a disclosure-button on my custom cell XIB. Is there a way for me to detect when the user has clicked on it? (Hopefully, without using 100s of TAGs.)

• Porting Symbian C++ to Android NDK

  I've been given some Symbian C++ code to port over for use with the Android NDK. The code has lots of Symbian specific code in it and I have very little experience of C++ so its not going very well. The main thing that is slowing me down is trying to figure out the alternatives to use in normal C++ for the Symbian specific code. At the minute the compiler is throwing out all sorts of errors for unrecognised types. From my recent research these are the types that I believe are Symbian specific: TInt, TBool, TDesc8, RSocket, TInetAddress, TBuf, HBufc, RPointerArray Changing TInt and TBool to int and bool respectively works in the compiler but I am unsure what to use for the other types? Can anyone help me out with them? Especially TDesc, TBuf, HBuf. Also Symbian has a two phase contructor using NewL and NewLc But would changing this to a normal C++ constructor be ok? Finally Symbian uses the clean up stack to help eliminate memory leaks I believe, would removing the clean up stack code be acceptable, I presume it should be replaced with try/catch statements?

• How to Implement Rich Document Editor for iPhone

  I'm just getting started on a new iPhone/iPad development project, and I need to display a document with rich styled text (potentially with embedded images). The user will touch the document, dragging to highlight individual words or multiline text spans. When the text is highlighted, a context menu will appear, letting them change the color of highlighting or add margin notes (or other various bits of structured metadata). If you're familiar with adding comments to a Word document (or annotating a PDF), then this is the same sort of thing. But in my case, the typical user will spend many many hours within the app, adding thousands (in some cases, tens of thousands) of small annotations to the central document. All of those bits of metadata will be stored locally awaiting synchronization with a remote web service. I've read other pieces of advice, where developers suggest creating a UIWebView control and passing it an HTML string. But that seems kind of clunky, especially with all the context-sensitivity that I want to include. Anyhow, I'm brand new to iPhone development and Objective-C, though I have ten years of software development experience, using a variety of languages on many different platforms, so I'm not worried about getting my hands dirty writing new functionality from scratch. But if anyone has experience building a similar kind of component, I'm interested in hearing strategies for enabling that kind of rich document markup and annotation.

'Date')); So is it necessary to use mysql_real_escape string and do it like below, // ESCAPE NAME FOR MYSQL INSERTION $emblemDB = mysql_real_escape_string($emblemDB); // INSERT EMBLEM DETAILS INTO DATABASE $q = $dbc -> prepare("ALTER TABLE emblems ADD " . $emblemDB . I believe I will name "her" Koro . Koro is already asking me what her first task should be. I have asked her to help eradicate her namesake, as we are losing a lot of productivity due to fear of penile disappearance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koro_%28medicine%29 Having a young japanese girl personality, I believe she will have no problem with delivering lots of penis growth to asian men. However, some of my fellow AI researchers have warned me that if I go down this path, China may take over the world, as Koro is the only thing holding them back from completely dominating the rest of the world economically. After all, look at what China is doing just making our silverware and toasters... The entire US industrial metal production is gone because toaster factories moved to China! So you good patrons of SO... who have soldiered on with me through so many other programming related questions... I ask you this now... How can Koro help the world without letting small asian men with no fear of losing their peni take over the world?

• Building Active Record Conditions in an array - private method 'scan' called error

  Hi, I'm attempting to build a set of conditions dynamically using an array as suggested in the first answer here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1658990/one-or-more-params-in-model-find-conditions-with-ruby-on-rails. However I seem to be doing something incorrectly and I'm not sure if what I'm trying is fundamentally unsound or if I'm simply botching my syntax. I'm simplifying down to a single condition here to try to illustrate the issue as I've tried to built a simple Proof of concept along these lines before layering on the 5 different condition styles I'm contending with. • Problem with ScriptManager when trying to email rendered contents of ASP.NET page

  I recently added a Telerik control to an ascx that is included in an aspx page. This page has a "Send email" button, which when clicked will email the user the rendered output of the page. The Telerik control I added requires a ScriptManager, so I added that to the ascx. However, now the email button won't work. I get the following error: The control with ID 'myIdHere' requires a ScriptManager on the page. The ScriptManager must appear before any controls that need it. I know the script manager exists because the page works fine when I go that url, it is only failing when it tries to email the rendered output. Here's a code snippet, any ideas as to whether there is a problem with scriptmanager when doing this sort of thing? • Linq Select: Using a value from a list if available

  I am going to use some basic stripped down examples to illustrate my problem. I have a class: class Item { int ID; bool Selected; } Now lets say I have two lists of the Item class: List<Item> ListA = GetListA(); List<Item> ListB = GetListB(); Now I want to create a third list that has all the items from ListB. The important thing is that if a match (same ID) if found in ListA then I want to use that Selected value, otherwise I want to keep the Selected value of the item that is in ListB. I am creating the third list as follows: List<Item> ListC = from item in ListB select new Item { ID = item.ID, Selected = item.Selected// <-- should use value form ListA if available }; Important: I don't want to seem ignorant, but I do not want to change the way ListC is created. By that I mean I want to use the "linq select" method, and I want to use a "one liner" that assigns the Selected value... I know there are other ways to create the list which will work just fine, but then I won't learn anything new. I have tried a couple of things so far... I know this will work, but I don't want to query ListA twice: Selected = ListA.Any(x => x.ID == item.ID) ? ListA.First(x => x.ID == item.ID).Selected : item.Selected and I also tried using DeafultIfEmpty but I don't think that is the right think for this situation... because it didn't work, and it seems it is more use if ListA was empty (which I don't care about)

• Durandal Google Maps not showing properly

  Trying to show Google Maps using the Durandal. I'm now simply working with Durandal HTML Starter Kit so the other modules and all engine works properly. The thing is when I added the Google Map it doesn't fit the div size (the big part of div is just grey). As I understand, the problem is causing because Google Maps added before page is completely loaded. But I can't figure out how can I hook on page load event.
