• Port forwarding not working?

  I'm trying to set up an Apache Server to be accessed publicly. I'm using a Netgear R4500 router hooked up to a Motorola SB6121 modem. I can access my server on my computer by typing in my IP address. After following the instructions to forward port 80 so I can access the server from other computers, it does not work (see image). I get "This webpage is not available". I am forwarding to the IP address of my computer. Using this Network Port Scanner Tool, it says "80/tcp filtered http", which, as I understand it, means forwarding did not work correctly. In my Apache httpd file, I have: ServerName 192.168.1.13:80 and Listen 192.168.1.13:80 Anyone know what's wrong or have something I can try? click to enlarge

I have never really looked into it at all, but I was considering setting up a compiler farm and thought this might be interesting to try. Does one have a main computer that the PXE answers to to get its image? Can you have multiple PXE images to pick from? Thanks!

• How to avoid to be employed by companies which are candidates to DailyWTF stories?

  I'm reading The Daily WTF archives and especially those stories about IT-related companies which have a completely wrong approach of software development, the job of a developer, etc. Some stories are totally horrible: a company don't have a local network for security reasons, another one has a source control server which can only be accessed by the manager, etc. Add to it all those stories about managers who don't know anything about their work and make stupid decisions without listening to anybody. The thing is that I don't see how to know if you will be employed by such company during an interview. Of course, sometimes, an interviewer tells weird things which gives you an idea that something goes very wrong with the company (in my case, the last manager said I should work 100% of my time through Remote Desktop, connected to on an old and slooooow machine, because "it avoids several people to modify the same source code"; maybe I should explain him what SVN is). But in most cases, you will be unable to get enough information during the interview to get the exact image of a company. So how to avoid being employed by this sort of companies? I thought about asking to see some documents like documentation guide or code style guidelines. The problem is that I live in France, and here, most of the companies don't have those documents at all, and in the rare cases where those documents exist, they are outdated, poorly written, never used, or do force you to make things that don't make any sense. I also thought about asking to see how programmers actually work. But seeing that they have dual screens or "late-modern-artsy-fartsy furnishings" doesn't mean that they don't have people making weird decisions, making it impossible to work there. Have you been in such situations? What have you tried? Have it worked?

• Excel wizardness needed - Group By, Sort, Count function help

  Riddle me this: You have 3 part numbers with the same part name xyz, each with a quantity of 10 items. The items can be picked during the day or week, therefore changing the amount of items on hand. I know I need to use the group by, sort, count and perhaps sumif formulas to have a running count of the number of items on hand at the end of each day (which could be positive or negative). Help? it wont let me add an image because i'm a new user. 'Oops! Your edit couldn't be submitted because: * we're sorry, but as a spam prevention mechanism, new users aren't allowed to post images. • Installing linux mint in one partition

  So, I have a disk with a MBR setup(image below). I've managed to have 50 GB unallocated space for intalling Linux Mint 14. And I want to keep the current windows OS too(but don't want the Mint inside windows). Now I've seen in some tutorials that Linux Mint needs several partitions for bootloader, swap, & home. I don't like to have so many partitions & maybe MBR stuff won't let me create more than one now. So, is it possible to install Linux Mint in one partition only? If it is really impossible than what's the minimum number? & how can I accomplish that? Thanks in advance.

• Facebook Like javascript related to Time Spent Downloading a page Increase in GWT?

  Hi, I installed the Facebook Like button Javascript version on my website on December 15th. Take a look at this report from Google Webmaster Central. Crawl stats Googlebot activity in the last 90 days The crawl stats are from Googlebot which as far as I know doesn't execute Javascript. Could the Facebook Like Javascript code, "The XFBML version" be related to large spike in Time spent downloading a page? (By the way the huge spike in November was caused by a mistake where every image request was getting a 301.) I'm not sure what caused the spike to go down by half somewhere in December. It may have been related to a faulty setting in web.config. I'm at a loss as to what I can do about this or even how to tell if this is my problem or Googlebots crawl problem. Here is the Facebook code I am using to create the like button. • Oracle Worldwide Product Translation Group and Applications User Experience Working Together

  The Applications User Experience (UX) Mobile team has been extending its ethnographic research to even more countries. Recently, the team conducted research in Sweden, and I am pleased to say I made the connection for the UX team with the Oracle's Worldwide Translation Product Group (WPTG) local (that is, in-country) language specialists. It struck me that WPTG's local market knowledge and insight that we heard about at an Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in the UK in 2011 would be very valuable to the UX efforts while, at the same time, UX could afford WPTG an opportunity to understand our design and development direction so that linguistic resources (terminology, style guides, translatability guidelines, and so on) for any translation of our mobile solutions could be prepared in advance. Brent White of the Mobile UX team takes notes as ethnography participant Capri Norman uses mobile technology to work in Stockholm. Pic credit: Oracle Applications UX. The UX team acknowledges Capri's kind permission to use this image. I'm told by Brent White of the Mobile UX team that the co-operation was a big success.  A WPTG Swedish language specialist joined a couple of ethnographic sessions, taking great notes and turning them around very fast for the UX team. And of course, a great local insight into Swedish culture and ways of working was provided too, along with some nice socializing!  More research in more countries is planned. Watch out for future blog posts and other communications about this great co-operation worldwide.

  I have an image resize server sitting behind an nginx server. On a cold cache two clients requesting the same file could trigger two resize jobs. client-01.net GET /resize.do/avatar-1234567890/300x200.png client-02.net GET /resize.do/avatar-1234567890/300x200.png It would be great if only one of the requests could go through to the backend in this situation (while the other client is set 'on-hold'). In Varnish there seems to be such a feature, called Request Coalescing. However that seems to be a Varnish-specific term. Is there something similar for Nginx?

• How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Internet Explorer menu z-order problem [migrated]

  I have what appears to be a z-order problem with Internet Explorer 9. It might be in other IE versions also, but not tested. I have to assume so. This page: http://www.modelhelicopters.co.uk/partsfinder/trex500esp/frames If you hover over the "All pages for this model" menu item on the parts finder menu bar (below the currency selector) - it should drop down a list of all the parts finder pages for the selected model helicopter. If you view the same page in IE or Chrome etc, you will see how it should appear. In IE9, the menu gets cut off at the top of the main exploded view image - suggesting the z-order is wrong. I have tried amending this with a jquery snippet but it didn't fix IE9. I know the code was inserted by jquery as shown by firebug in firefox. $j('div.std img[src*="/partsfinder/img"]').attr("style","position:relative;z-index:-100;"); I really do not know why this is not working.

  I’m learning 2D programming, so excuse my approximations, and please, don’t hesitate to correct me. I am just trying to fire a bullet from a player. I’m using HTML canvas (top left origin). Here is a representation of my problem: The black vector represent the position of the player (the grey square). The green vector represent its direction. The red disc represents the target. The red vector represents the direction of a bullet, which will move in the direction of the target (red and dotted line). The blue cross represents the point from where I really want to fire the bullet (and the blue and dotted line represents its movement). This is how I draw the player (this is the player object. • Big noise from Power Supply Unity Fa? Should I replace it immediately?

  Recently, I started to get a large noise from my PC when switched on. After some time, it disappears. I discovered that the issue is with the Power Supply Unit. Does this mean I have a failing PSU? Will it harm the PC if I didn't replace it immediately? Several years ago I bought a new computer casing which is very weird. Its small and compact. Normally, we have the PSU in the top. But in here, the PSU is on the bottom and right below the hard drive. Recently, two of my hard drives started to show problems. Read errors and bad sectors. • Help with putting Ubuntu on an old laptop

  Hi I dusted off an old laptop from 2004 which has Windows XP. I want to put Ubuntu on it. So, I downloaded the CD image and then burnt it to a disc. I tried starting the laptop and booting from CD but no luck. The CD drive doesn't work in the laptop anymore! So I shared the files on the local server and then accessed the wubi.exe file from within Windows XP, and it proceeded to download something else and install. It then asked me to restart, which I did. I now have a folder C:\ubuntu with a bunch of files in it. How do I get the option to boot to Ubuntu? Sorry, I have never installed a Linux variant before! • iSCSI SAN RAID 10 Performance -- Poor Read, Good Write

  I have a EqualLogic PS4000 SAN unit with the latest firmware, setup in RAID 10. I have 3 2TB Volumes on the SAN shared out via iSCSI on 2 eth ports on two different subnets. I have moved a test server over to this newly setup SAN, and my testing is showing me a problem. I am getting dismal read performance in everything except a test with 32 queue depth (see attach image) Write performance seems to be right about where it should be. I have tried MPIO on and off, on was slightly better but not much.

• Why is idle windows VM using so much CPU?

  I have 2 VMs running as guests on a KVM virtualization platform running on Ubuntu 10.04. One VM is an Ubuntu 10.04 system, the other is a Windows 7 system. When both machines are completely logged out, the Linux machine uses 1% CPU, the Windows one 45-50%, according to top. The graphs in virt-manager seem to back this up. Theres nothing installed on the Win7 image that would be running in the background; its as fresh as can be. Why is the Windows VM using so much more than the Linux VM, when both are logged out and idling?

• Address VMWare Fusion Linux guest by hostname?

  I have a Ubuntu Server 9.04 image set up in VMWare Fusion 3.0.0, using the NAT option for the guest's network connection. From the Mac host, I can ssh to the linux guest just fine using it's IP address, but I would like to be able to refer to it by hostname for connivence. ie: mac-host:~ ssh [email protected] I had a similar setup using Parallels a couple years ago, but I don't remember how it was set up. It may have "just worked". Any suggestion on how to make this work?

• Excel CSV import treating quoted strings of numbers as numeric values, not strings

  I've got a web application that is exporting its data to a CSV file. Here's one example row of the CSV file in question: 28,"65154",02/21/2013 00:00,"false","0316295","8316012,8315844","MALE" Since I can't post an image, I'll have to explain the results in Excel. The "0316295" field gets turned into a number and the leading 0 goes away. The "8316012,8315844" gets interpreted as one single number: 83,160,128,315,844. That is, most obviously, not the intended result. I've seen people recommend a leading single quote for such cases, but that doesn't really work either. 28,"65154",02/21/2013 00:00,"false","'0316295","'8316012,8315844","MALE" The single quote is visible at all times in the cell in Excel, though if I enter a number with a leading single quote myself, it shows just the intended string and not the single quote with the string. Importing is not the same as typing, it seems. Anybody have a solution here?

• nike ocr twitter api rsvp software not working

  I recently purchased an OCR program that reads through Nike's Twitter page and takes a circled word out of a picture and sends it back in a Twitter DM. However, it recently stopped working, probably because the person whom I bought it from deleted the server and hasn't responded to my emails. It is a Twitter API app. It still goes through the tweets and I can enter usernames, but it does not read the image anymore nor send a DM. • Add colors to gif palete gimp

  When I open a GIF file in gimp, I find it very hard to add more colours then those that are already contained in GIF palette. When I draw with different colours, GIMP is trying to use the colour from palette most approximate to the colour I'm drawing. (may result in red instead of black) This problem persist even if I save the imported GIF as XCF file (even if I create new layers in it). How do I make gimp ignore the palette? The only solution was saving (exporting) the file as some non-palete image as BMP and then importing it again. Example : After flood fill (black)

• Estimate angle to launch missile, maths question

  I've been working on this for an hour or two now and my maths really isn't my strong suit which is definitely not a good thing for a game programmer but that shouldn't stop me enjoying a hobby surely? After a few failed attempts I was hoping someone else out there could help so here's the situation. I'm trying to implement a bit of faked intelligence when the A.I fires it's missiles at a target in a 2D game world. By predicting the likely position the target will be in given it's current velocity and the time it will take the missile to reach it's target. I created an image to demonstrate my thinking: http://i.imgur.com/SFmU3.png which also contains the logic I use for accelerating the missile after launch. The ship that fires the missile can fire within a total of 40 degree angle, 20 either side of itself, but this could likely become variable. My current attempt was to break the space between the two lines into segments which match the targets width. Then calculate the time it would take the missile to get to that location using the formula. So for each iteration of this we total up the values and that tells us the distance travelled, ad it would then just need compared to distance to the segment. startVelocity * ((startVelocity * acceleration)^(currentframe-1) So for example. If we start at a velocity of 1f/frame with an acceleration of 0.1f the formula, at frame 4, would be 1 * (1.1^3) = 1.331 But I quickly realized I was getting lost when trying to put this into practice. Does this seem like a correct starting point or am I going completely the wrong way about it? Any pointers would help me greatly. Maths really isn't my strong suit so I get easily lost in these matters and don't even really know a good phrase to search for with this. So I guess in summary my question is more about the correct way to approach this problem and any additional code samples on top of that would be great but I'm not averse to working out the complete code from helpful pointers.
