• How to get Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition on Windows 7

  Visual studio 2010 is an amzing release from Microsoft. I have tried the beta 1,2 of Visual Studio 2010 and finally the full version is released. I am also interested in the latest edition of Windows which nothing but our Windows 7. Next to Vista I like this version very much. Out of curiosity I have installed the prebuild version of Windows 7. I tried installing the express edition here and it failed making me disappointed. I tried two or three times and finally I decided to download the trial version of Windows 7. After that I can install the Visual Studio 2010 express edition easily. I have given the link below from where I have downloaded the file. http://www.microsoft.com/express/downloads/ Here the link give is through Web PI Installer. Other option is you can download the ISO image file and burn them to a disc or use a virtual disc This Visual Web developer will provide the Sql Server engine alone. To get a Sql Server Management Studio get from the following link http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/InstallOptions.aspx That's it all the things necessary for the web application programming is ready. Ah I forget to tell about the Silverlight. • Trouble Connecting to Virtual Machine after IP address Change

  I have a VMware image running a copy of Fedora 11 which is hosted on a remote server. The remote server recently had its IP address change. I'm now unable to connect to my virtual machine. The server admin assures me that my virtual machine is running and assigned the new IP address. I have checked the firewalls and had the remote admin restart the VM instance. Neither of these fixed the problem. How do I troubleshoot a remote server which I am unable to SSH to? I'm actually even unable to ping the remote IP (connection timed out).

• Distribute Windows (XP or 7) as virtual appliance

  I'm looking at ways that may be possible to distribute a Microsoft Windows (e.g. 7) virtual appliance (such as VMWare image) pre-configured and installed with a large application of mine. Is this possible? If not, is it perhaps best to ask clients to perform a virtual appliance installation on their site and then install my application via a script of some sort? For these kinds of scenarios I see that open source OSes are heavily used, but in my case I cannot use Linux or any other open source OS due to some requirements.

• Progress bar in Super Hexagon using OpenGL ES 2 (Android)

  I'm wondering how the progress bar in Super Hexagon was made. (see image, top left) Actually I am not very sure how to implement a progress bar at all using OpenGL ES 2 on Android, but I am asking specifically about the one used in Super Hexagon because it seems to me less straightforward / obvious than others: the bar changes its colour during game play. I think one possibility is to use the built-in Android progress bar. I can see from some Stackoverflow questions that you can change the default blue colour to whatever you want, but I'm not sure whether you can update it during the game play. The other possibility I can think of for implementing a progress bar is to have a small texture that starts with a scale of 0 and that you keep scaling until it reaches the maximum size, representing 100%. But this suffers from the same problem as before: you'll not be able to update the colour of the texture during run-time. It's fixed. So what's the best way to approach this problem? *I'm assuming he didn't use a particular library, although if he did, it would be interesting to know. I'm interested in a pure OpenGL ES 2 + Android solution.

• IE won't load directly-linked PNGs

  I remember having this issue in the past with previous versions as well but recently it started here again. Whenever I click a link that links directly to a PNG image I get a download dialog; the browser won't display it on its own. Inline PNGs are fine, though. Any ideas what causes this? It did work in the past. Preemptive warning: I'm not looking for advice to change my browser; I'm looking for a solution to a specific problem with one piece of software. Just ignore the fact that it may have religious importance.

• Screen doesn't turn back on after resume on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420

  Every time I suspend my notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad T420 - Intel HD graphic card) on Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 and turn it back on, the screen is black. The backlight is on and the system itself loads fine, but the display somehow doesn't get back. The first time after a fresh reboot the screen isn't black, it is mostly white/light-gray and it looks a bit like a distorted image. The pixels fade in until it gets almost completely light-gray. I've got a workaround for this: I switch to the first terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7). In most cases that helps. Sometimes, when there's still a problem, I log in on the first terminal and run "unity --reset". Then go back to X - this helps always. I can tell that the system comes back, because I can log in with my fingerprint reader (or wait a bit and put in the password) "blindly", then do the workaround - I am logged in after the screen comes back. So it's only the display that is not working. Any help or advice where to look would be appreciated.

  Please excuse the poor image quality: What are the components that I've circled in red? The ones on the left look whole and solid. The ones on the right have cracked tops, and although this picture doesn't show it, there are small brown threads coming out of the top. Are the cracked ones broken, or is that supposed to happen? If they ARE broken, is this something I should worry about? This is a video card, and it appears to be fully functional: I'm using it while writing this post.

  One of my Windows Server 2008 R2 server has started to go into System Recovery Options at reboot. I have tried to let it go through a System Image Recovery, which it says completes successfully. But after reboot it again wants to do a system recovery. Safe mode doesn't work; it still wants to do a system recovery. Putting in the install DVD trying to do a repair actually brings up the very same System Revoery dialog again. Nothing has changed configuration wise. Any ideas?

  I just made an architecture for an application with the function of scoring, saving and loading tennis games. The architecture has 2 kinds of elements: components & layers. Components: Standalone elements that can be consumed by other components or by layers. They might also consume functionality from the model/bottom layer. Layers: Software components whose functionality rests on previous layers (except for the model layer). -Layers: -Models: Data and it's behavior. -Controllers: A layer that allows interaction between the views and the models. -Views: The presentation layer for interacting with the user. -Components: -Persistence: Makes sure the game data can be stored away for later retrieval. -Time Machine: Records changes in the game through time so it's possible to navigate the game back and forth. -Settings: Contains the settings that determine how some of the game logic will apply. -Game Engine: Contains all the game logic, which it applies to the game data to determine the path the game should take. Move through game history and see how the scoreboard changes as the game evolves. Tie-breaks must be properly managed. Games must be classified by hit-type. Every point can be modified. Match name and player names must be stored. Game logic must be configurable by the user. I would really appreciate any kind of advice or comments on this architecture. • My iPhone is stuck at screen with USB cable and iTunes logo

  I just tried updating the iPhone's firmware, and things went haywire. iTunes informed the update had failed and linked me to this page. The iPhone is stuck on the image from the top of that page. I held down the sleep and home buttons until it turned off and turned it back on, and then went through the iPhone's 'restore' mode. It then error'd again and I'm stuck back with the logos on the iPhone. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

• Does your organization still use the term "screens" to describe a user interface?

  I have been in the field long enough to remember when the term "screen" entered our lexicon. As difficult as it is to believe, the early systems on which I worked had no user interface (UI), that is, unless one counts a keypunch machine and job listings as a user interface. These systems ran as "card image" production jobs back in a day when being a computer operator required a reasonably deep understanding of how computers worked. Flashing forward to today: I cringe every time I hear a systems practitioner use the term "screen." The metaphor no longer fits the medium. The term somewhat fit back when the user dialog consumed 100% of available monitor real estate; however, the term lost its relevance the moment we moved to windowed environments. With the above said, does your organization still use the term "screens" to describe an application's UI? Has anyone successfully purged the term from an organization? For those who do not use the term to describe UI dialog elements, what term do you use in place of “screen.”

  The BackgroundWorker is a reusable component that can be used in different contexts, but sometimes with unexpected results. If you are like me, you have mostly used background workers while doing Windows Forms development due to the flexibility they offer for running a background task. They support cancellation and give events that signal progress updates and task completion. When used in Windows Forms, these events (ProgressChanged and RunWorkerCompleted) get executed back on the UI thread where you can freely access your form controls. However, the logic of the progress changed and worker completed events being invoked in the thread that started the background worker is not something you get directly from the BackgroundWorker, but instead from the fact that you are running in the context of Windows Forms. Another scenario where you can get the first behavior, even when on Windows Forms or WPF, is if you chain the creation of background workers, that is, you create a second worker in the DoWork event handler of an already running worker. Since the DoWork executes in a thread from the pool the second worker will use the default synchronization context and the completed event will not run in the UI thread.

• Prevent Click Fraud in Advertisement system with PHP and Javascript

  I would like to build an Advertising project with PHP, MySQL, and Javascript. I am talking about something like... Google Adsense BuySellAds.com Any other advertising platform My question is mainly, what do I need to look out for to prevent people cheating the system and any other issues I may encounter? My design concept. An Advertisement is a record in the Database, when a page is loaded, using Javascript, it calls my server which in turn will use a PHP script to query the Database and get a random Advertisement. (It may do kore like get an ad based on demographics or other criteria as well) The PHP script will then return the Advertisement to the server/website that is calling it and show it on the page as an Image that will have a special tracking link. I will need to... Count all impressions (when the Advertisement is shown on the page) Count all clicks on the Advertisement link Count all Unique clicks on the Advertisement link My question is purely on the query and displaying of the Advertisement and nothing to do with the administration side. If there is ever money involved with my Advertisement buying/selling of adspace, then the stats need to be accurate and make sure people can't easily cheat the system. Is tracking IP address really the only way to try to prevent click fraud? I am hoping someone with some experience can clarify I am on the right track? As well as give me any advice, tips, or anything else I should know about doing something like this?

• Windows XP autostart process as administrator

  I am looking for a way with which i can autostart a certain program on logon of a user with user-rights with administrator-rights. I already tried using task scheduler but it didn't work out because you got to enter a username with format machine\user and our pxe-image-deployment-system automatically patches the machine names so the entered domain\user stopped working. UPDATE: the runas.exe command does not seem appropiate for this task, too. If using /user:machinename\Administrator /savcred it is invalid after imaging. What one user suggested was using .\Administrator or localhost\Administrator but both didn't work on my XP SP3 machines.

• When to use each user research method

  There are a lot of user research methods out there, but sometimes we get stuck in a rut, conducting all formative usability testing before coding, or running surveys to gather satisfaction data. I'll be the first to admit that it happens to me, but to get out of a rut, it just takes a minute to look at where I am in the design & development cycle, what kind(s) of data I need, and what methods are available to me. We need reminders, or refreshers, every once in a while. One tool I've found useful is a graphic organizer that I created many years ago. It's been through several revisions, as I've adapted it to the product cycles of the places I've worked, changed my mind about how to categorize it, and added methods that I've used or created over time. I shared a version of this table at the 2012 International UPA conference, and I was contacted by someone yesterday who wanted to use it in a university course on user-center design. I was flattered at the the thought, but embarrassed, because I was sure it needed updating -- that was a year ago, after all. But I opened it today, and really, there's not much I'd change -- sure, I could add some nuance regarding what types of formative testing, such as modality (remote, unmoderated remote, or in-person) or flavor of testing (RITE, RITE-Krug, comparative, performance), but I think it's pretty much ok as is. Click on the image below, to get the full-size PDF. And whether it's entirely "right" or "wrong" isn't the whole value of looking at these methods across the product lifecycle. The real value lies in the reminder that I have options. And what those options are change as the field changes, so while I don't expect this graphic to have an eternal shelf life, it's still ok a year after I last updated it. • Black screen with thinkpad edge e525, AMD radeon HD before and after installation, plymouth?

  I have a new thinkpad edge e525 (which should work) and wanted to try ubuntu (first linux experience). With the ubuntu desktop-cd I had a blackscreen before installation, I could fix that with nomodeset. After the installation, when rebooting I got the black screen again. First I see some ubuntu colour with a green busted stripe. I have the same problem with the live boot, also tried mint live, the stripe gets pink. I installed xubuntu 64bit from an alternate cd and I didnt have problems until de reboot after the installation. Same problem, just a black screen with the green stripe than blackscreen. I tried several things: adding nomodeset to the bootmenu, but than I get: No connection to plymouth and it is stuck at checking the battery status. I tried to replace quiet splash with text. Didnt work either. actually one time I saw a blue booting image before that. I managed to get a root command though via the recovery boot. I didnt dare to just remove the plymouth package. Can I just delete plymouth or do I have to deinstall it as described in several ways. (Problem is, right now the notebook doesnt have a internet connection. And I dont know how to manage it with a usb stick?) Or do I have to install the AMD catalyst driver manually? (Again, how can I do that with an usb stick) I also tried this: Ubuntu hits a black screen after boot. Is there any solution without internet? And if I need internet which is the right one? Please explain step by step what I have to write and so on! Thank you! also tried: set gfxpayload=text and: just remove splash and adding vesafb.nonsense=1 to the grub editor, because I couldnt find it anywhere

• virtual install from ISO not getting virtual kernel

  I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

• Why Outlook 2007 pasted images are larger than original?

  I have been using Outlook 2007 for over a year with no image problems. Around September 1st, images that I paste into messages are enlarged in the messages. This happends with WinSnap, the Vista Snipping Tool, or any jpeg pasted into the message I tried jpegs with 96dpi settings w/o sucess I tried different Outlook Format Picture ... and Size ... settings Problem happens with both RTF and HTML messages Attached images are ok Something mysteriously changed and I cannot figure it out. I googled this to death without any success (others have the problem but there is no solution). This is driving me nuts because I snap screenshots all day long ("a picture is worth a thousand words"). Thanks in advance.

• How to set the IP address in a customized OpenWRT compilation

  I have been struggling today customizing OpenWRT. I checkout the stable using SVN, "make menuconfig" to customize the image, "make" it and run it on a router. Almost all my modifications work, except for the (Seemingly trivial) task of changing the default 192.168.1.1 address. I tried numerous files (scripts as well as config files) but I can't seem to change it (I can change it for a brief moment after boot using the "preinit" file, but after a few seconds it reverts to default). I suspect I should be setting it in the /etc/network file, but modifications there seem to be overwritten during boot. Maybe it has something to do with the br-lan interface? Does anybody have some thoughts on the subject? Thanks!

• Viewing file: protocol requests made from a swf

  I've got a swf file in a index.html file, the swf is basically loading images, but it requests a xml file which details where the image/asset files are located. Now the index file (which is just html, js, and css) works (ie: the swf file is working) when used on this url: http://localhost:8500/core/index.html which I'm able to do with Coldfusion 8 single server development environment. But when I access the file directly with this url: file:///C:/ColdFusion8/wwwroot/core/index.html the swf file does not work. So I'm guessing that the swf is having trouble locating the files that it needs. The problem is I have no idea what file urls it is try to access atm, and both Firebug and Fiddler are not able to inform me what requests are made on the file: protocol. So is there another tool that I can use?
