• Problems with sp_addlinkedserver in MSSQL 2000

- by manneorama
Hi! I'm having a bit of a problem with moving specific data from one server running MSSQL 2000 (A) and another running MSSQL 2008 (B). I'm writing a script according to customer specifications which is to be executed on A, populating tables in B with data. However, I can't seem to get the server link to work. -- Bunch of declarations here EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = @ServerName, @srvproduct = @ServerProduct, @provider = @ProviderString, @datasrc = @RemoteHost -- Data migration stuff here EXEC sp_dropserver @ServerName Now if I run the script in its entirety I get an error saying: Msg 7202, Level 11, State 2, Line 55 Could not find server 'remoteServer' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. However, if I higlight only the sp_addlinkedserver-part and execute that, there is no error and I can highlight the rest of the script and run it. What am I missing here? Please help! PS. If backup-restore was an option, I would have done that already.

• Web service client receiving generic FaultException rather than FaultException<T>

- by Junto
I am connecting to a Java Axis2 web service using a .NET web service client. The client itself targets the .NET 3.5 framework. The application that wraps the client DLL is 2.0. I'm not sure if that has any bearing. I have been given the WSDL and XSDs by email. From those I have built my proxy class using svcutil. Although I am able to successfully send messages, I am unable to pick up the correct faults when something goes wrong. In the example below, errors are always being picked up by the generic FaultException. catch (FaultException<InvoiceErrorType> fex) { OnLog(enLogLevel.ERROR, fex.Detail.ErrorDescription); } catch (FaultException gfex) { OnLog(enLogLevel.ERROR, gfex.Message); } The proxy client appears to have the appropriate attributes for the FaultContract: // CODEGEN: Generating message contract since the operation SendInvoiceProvider_Prod is neither RPC nor document wrapped. [OperationContractAttribute(Action = "https://private/SendInvoiceProvider", ReplyAction = "*")] [FaultContractAttribute(typeof(InvoiceErrorType), Action = "https://private/SendInvoiceProvider", Name = "InvoiceError", Namespace = "urn:company:schema:entities:base")] [XmlSerializerFormatAttribute(SupportFaults = true)] [ServiceKnownTypeAttribute(typeof(ItemDetail))] [ServiceKnownTypeAttribute(typeof(Supplier))] OutboundComponent.SendInvoiceProviderResponse SendInvoiceProvider_Prod(OutboundComponent.SendInvoiceProvider_Request request); I have enabled tracing and I can see the content of the fault coming back, but .NET is not recognizing it as an InvoiceError. The SOAP fault in full is: <soapenv:Fault> <faultcode xmlns="">soapenv:Client</faultcode> <faultstring xmlns="">Message found to be invalid</faultstring> <faultactor xmlns="">urn:SendInvoiceProvider</faultactor> <detail xmlns=""> <InvoiceError xmlns="urn:company:schema:entities:common:invoiceerror:v01"> <ErrorID>100040</ErrorID> <ErrorType>UNEXPECTED</ErrorType> <ErrorDescription><![CDATA[<error xmlns="urn:company:schema:errordetail:v01"><errorCode>1000</errorCode><highestSeverity>8</highestSeverity><errorDetails count="1"><errorDetail><errorType>1</errorType><errorSeverity>8</errorSeverity><errorDescription>cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting with element 'CompanyName'. One of '{"urn:company:schema:sendinvoice:rq:v01":RoleType}' is expected.</errorDescription><errorNamespace>urn:company:schema:sendinvoice:rq:v01</errorNamespace><errorNode>CompanyName</errorNode><errorLine>1</errorLine><errorColumn>2556</errorColumn><errorXPath/><errorSource/></errorDetail></errorDetails></error>]]></ErrorDescription> <TimeStamp>2010-05-04T21:12:10Z</TimeStamp> </InvoiceError> </detail> </soapenv:Fault> I have noticed the namespace defined on the error: <InvoiceError xmlns="urn:company:schema:entities:common:invoiceerror:v01"> This is nowhere to be seen in the generated proxy class, nor in the WSDLs. The interface WSDL defines the error schema namespace as such: <xs:import namespace="urn:company:schema:entities:base" schemaLocation="InvoiceError.xsd"/> Could this be the reason why the .NET client is not able to parse the typed Fault Exception correctly? I have no control over the web service itself. I see no reason why .NET can't talk to a Java Axis2 web service. This user had a similar issue, but the reason for his problem cannot be the same as mine, since I can see the fault detail in the trace: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/864800/does-wcf-faultexceptiont-support-interop-with-a-java-web-service-fault Any help would be gratefully received.

• Status of Data in Rollback of Large Transaction in SQL Server

- by Lloyd Banks
I have a data warehousing procedure that downloads and replaces dozens of tables from a linked server to a local database. Every once in a while, the code will get stuck on one of the tables on the linked server because the table on the linked server is in a state of transition. I am under the assumption that since the entire procedure is considered one transaction commit, when the procedure gets stuck, none of the changes made by the procudure so far would have committed. But the opposite seems to be true, tables that were "downloaded" before the procedure got stuck would have been updated with today's versions on the local server. Shouldn't SQL Server wait for the entire procedure to finish before the changes are durable? CREATE PROCEDURE MYIMPORT AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM INFORMATION.SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'TABLE1') DROP TABLE TABLE1 SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 INTO TABLE1 FROM OPENQUERY(MYLINK, 'SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 FROM TABLE1') IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM INFORMATION.SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'TABLE2') DROP TABLE TABLE2 SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 INTO TABLE2 FROM OPENQUERY(MYLINK, 'SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 FROM TABLE2') --IF THE PROCEDURE GETS STUCK HERE, THEN CHANGES TO TABLE1 WOULD HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE LOCAL SERVER WHILE NO CHANGES WOULD HAVE BEEN MADE TO TABLE3 ON THE LOCAL SERVER IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM INFORMATION.SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'TABLE3') DROP TABLE TABLE3 SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 INTO TABLE3 FROM OPENQUERY(MYLINK, 'SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2, COLUMN3 FROM TABLE3') END

• SQL SERVER – Spatial Database Queries – What About BLOB – T-SQL Tuesday #006

- by pinaldave
Michael Coles is one of the most interesting book authors I have ever met. He has a flair of writing complex stuff in a simple language. There are a very few people like that. I really enjoyed reading his recent book, Expert SQL Server 2008 Encryption. I strongly suggest taking a look at it. This blog is written in response to T-SQL Tuesday #006: “What About BLOB? by Michael Coles. Spatial Database is my favorite subject. Since I did my TechEd India 2010 presentation, I have enjoyed this subject a lot. Before I continue this blog post, there are a few other blog posts, so I suggest you read them. To help build the environment run the queries, I am going to present them in this single blog post. SQL SERVER – What is Spatial Database? – Developing with SQL Server Spatial and Deep Dive into Spatial Indexing This blog post explains the basics of Spatial Database and also provides a good introduction to Indexing concept. SQL SERVER – World Shapefile Download and Upload to Database – Spatial Database This blog post will enable you with how to load the shape file into database. SQL SERVER – Spatial Database Definition and Research Documents This blog post links to the white paper about Spatial Database written by Microsoft experts. SQL SERVER – Introduction to Spatial Coordinate Systems: Flat Maps for a Round Planet This blog post links to the white paper explaining coordinate system, as written by Microsoft experts. After reading the above listed blog posts, I am very confident that you are ready to run the following script. Once you create a database using the World Shapefile, as mentioned in the second link above, you can display the image of India just like the following. Please note that this is not an accurate political map. The boundary of this map has many errors and it is just a representation. You can run the following query to generate the map of India from the database spatial which you have created after following the instructions here. USE Spatial GO -- India Map SELECT [CountryName] ,[BorderAsGeometry] ,[Border] FROM [Spatial].[dbo].[Countries] WHERE Countryname = 'India' GO Now, let us find the longitude and latitude of the two major IT cities of India, Hyderabad and Bangalore. I find their values as the following: the values of longitude-latitude for Bangalore is 77.5833300000 13.0000000000; for Hyderabad, longitude-latitude is 78.4675900000 17.4531200000. Now, let us try to put these values on the India Map and see their location. -- Bangalore DECLARE @GeoLocation GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(77.5833300000 13.0000000000)',4326).STBuffer(20000); -- Hyderabad DECLARE @GeoLocation1 GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation1 = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(78.4675900000 17.4531200000)',4326).STBuffer(20000); -- Bangalore and Hyderabad on Map of India SELECT name, [GeoLocation] FROM [IndiaGeoNames] I WHERE I.[GeoLocation].STDistance(@GeoLocation) <= 0 UNION ALL SELECT name, [GeoLocation] FROM [IndiaGeoNames] I WHERE I.[GeoLocation].STDistance(@GeoLocation1) <= 0 UNION ALL SELECT '',[Border] FROM [Spatial].[dbo].[Countries] WHERE Countryname = 'India' GO Now let us quickly draw a straight line between them. DECLARE @GeoLocation GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(78.4675900000 17.4531200000)',4326).STBuffer(10000); DECLARE @GeoLocation1 GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation1 = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(77.5833300000 13.0000000000)',4326).STBuffer(10000); DECLARE @GeoLocation2 GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation2 = GEOGRAPHY::STGeomFromText('LINESTRING(78.4675900000 17.4531200000, 77.5833300000 13.0000000000)',4326) SELECT name, [GeoLocation] FROM [IndiaGeoNames] I WHERE I.[GeoLocation].STDistance(@GeoLocation) <= 0 UNION ALL SELECT name, [GeoLocation] FROM [IndiaGeoNames] I1 WHERE I1.[GeoLocation].STDistance(@GeoLocation1) <= 0 UNION ALL SELECT '' name, @GeoLocation2 UNION ALL SELECT '',[Border] FROM [Spatial].[dbo].[Countries] WHERE Countryname = 'India' GO Let us use the distance function of the spatial database and find the straight line distance between this two cities. -- Distance Between Hyderabad and Bangalore DECLARE @GeoLocation GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(78.4675900000 17.4531200000)',4326) DECLARE @GeoLocation1 GEOGRAPHY SET @GeoLocation1 = GEOGRAPHY::STPointFromText('POINT(77.5833300000 13.0000000000)',4326) SELECT @GeoLocation.STDistance(@GeoLocation1)/1000 'KM'; GO The result of above query is as displayed in following image. As per SQL Server, the distance between these two cities is 501 KM, but according to what I know, the distance between those two cities is around 562 KM by road. However, please note that roads are not straight and they have lots of turns, whereas this is a straight-line distance. What would be more accurate is the distance between these two cities by air travel. When we look at the air travel distance between Bangalore and Hyderabad, the total distance covered is 495 KM, which is very close to what SQL Server has estimated, which is 501 KM. Bravo! SQL Server has accurately provided the distance between two of the cities. SQL Server Spatial Database can be very useful simply because it is very easy to use, as demonstrated above. I appreciate your comments, so let me know what your thoughts and opinions about this are. • SQL SERVER – Transaction Log Full – Transaction Log Larger than Data File – Notes from Fields #001

- by Pinal Dave
I am very excited to announce a new series on this blog – Notes from Fields. I have been blogging for almost 7 years on this blog and it has been a wonderful experience. Though, I have extensive experience with SQL and Databases, it is always a good idea that we consult experts for their advice and opinion. Following the same thought process, I have started this new series of Notes from Fields. In this series we will have notes from various experts in the database world. My friends at Linchpin People have graciously decided to support me in my new initiation. Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. In this very first episode of the Notes from Fields series database expert Tim Radney (partner at Linchpin People) explains a very common issue DBA and Developer faces in their career, when database logs fills up your hard-drive or your database log is larger than your data file. Read the experience of Tim in his own words. As a consultant, I encounter a number of common issues with clients. One of the more common things I encounter is finding a user database in the FULL recovery model that does not make a regular transaction log backups or ever had a transaction log backup. When I find this, usually the transaction log is several times larger than the data file. Finding this issue is very significant to me in that it allows to me to discuss service level agreements with the client. I get to ask questions such as, are nightly full backups sufficient or do they need point in time recovery. This conversation has now signed with the customer and gets them to thinking about their disaster recovery and high availability solutions. This issue is also very prominent on SQL Server forums and usually has the title of “Help, my transaction log has filled up my disk” or “Help, my transaction log is many times the size of my database”. In cases where the client only needs the previous full nights backup, I am able to change the recovery model to SIMPLE and shrink the transaction log using DBCC SHRINKFILE (2,1) or by specifying the transaction log file name by using DBCC SHRINKFILE (file_name, target_size). When the client needs point in time recovery then in most cases I will still end up switching the client to the SIMPLE recovery model to truncate the transaction log followed by a full backup. I will then schedule a SQL Agent job to make the regular transaction log backups with an interval determined by the client to meet their service level agreements. It should also be noted that typically when I find an overgrown transaction log the virtual log file count is also out of control. I clean up will always take that into account as well. That is a subject for a future blog post. If your SQL Server is facing any issue we can Fix Your SQL Server. • SQL SERVER – Columnstore Index and sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats

- by pinaldave
As you know I have been writing on Columnstore Index for quite a while. Recently my friend Vinod Kumar wrote about SQL Server 2012: ColumnStore Characteristics. A fantastic read on the subject if you have yet not caught up on that subject. After the blog post I called him and asked what should I write next on this subject. He suggested that I should write on DMV script which I have prepared related to Columnstore when I was writing our SQL Server Questions and Answers book. When we were writing this book SQL Server 2012 CTP versions were available. I had written few scripts related to SQL Server columnstore Index. I like Vinod’s idea and I decided to write about DMV, which we did not cover in the book as SQL Server 2012 was not released yet. We did not want to talk about the product which was not yet released. The first script which I had written was with DMV - sys.column_store_index_stats. This DMV was displaying the statistics of the columnstore indexes. When I attempted to run it on SQL Server 2012 RTM it gave me error suggesting that this DMV does not exists. Here is the script which I ran: SELECT * FROM sys.column_store_index_stats; It generated following error: Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Invalid object name ‘column_store_index_stats’. I was pretty confident that this DMV was available when I had written the scripts. The next reaction was to type ‘sys.’ only in SSMS and wait for intelisense to popup DMV list. I scrolled down and noticed that above said DMV did not exists there as well. Now this is not bug or missing feature. This was indeed something can happen because the version which I was practicing was early CTP version. If you go to the page of the DMV here, it clearly stats notice on the top of the page. This documentation is for preview only, and is subject to change in later releases. Now this was not alarming but my next thought was if this DMV is not there where can I find the information which this DMV was providing. Well, while I was thinking about this, I noticed that my another friend Balmukund Lakhani was online on personal messenger. Well, Balmukund is “Know All” kid. I have yet to find situation where I have not got my answers from him. I immediately pinged him and asked the question regarding where can I find information of ‘column_store_index_stats’. His answer was very abrupt but enlightening for sure. Here is our conversation: Pinal: Where can I find information of column_store_index_stats? Balmukund: Assume you have never worked with CTP before and now try to find the information which you are trying to find. Honestly it was fantastic response from him. I was confused as I have played extensively with CTP versions of SQL Server 2012. Now his response give me big hint. I should have not looked for DMV but rather should have focused on what I wanted to do. I wanted to retrieve the statistics related to the index. In SQL Server 2008/R2, I was able to retrieve the statistics of the index from the DMV - sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats. I used the same DMV on SQL Server 2012 and it did retrieved the necessary information for me. Here is the updated script which gave me all the necessary information I was looking for. Matter of the fact, if I have used my earlier SQL Server 2008 R2 script this would have just worked fine. SELECT DB_NAME(Database_ID) DBName, SCHEMA_NAME(schema_id) AS SchemaName, OBJECT_NAME(ius.OBJECT_ID) ObjName, i.type_desc, i.name, user_seeks, user_scans, user_lookups, user_updates,* FROM sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats ius INNER JOIN sys.indexes i ON i.index_id = ius.index_id AND ius.OBJECT_ID = i.OBJECT_ID INNER JOIN sys.tables t ON t.OBJECT_ID = i.OBJECT_ID GO Let us see the resultset of above query. You will notice that column Type_desc describes the type of the index. You can additionally write WHERE condition on the column and only retrieve only selected type of Index. • I think client's project will be a flop; should I discuss with him? [closed]

- by WeaklyTyped
I have a meeting with a prospective client tomorrow for a certain e-commerce project he wants to commission. I had an overview of it over the phone and from what I understand there are gazillion such concepts already floating and most of them are disasters and I have reasons to believe that his project is significantly likely to have the same fate. Should I raise/discuss the commercial feasibility of his idea with him or simply accept the project, give my best and leave out all the rest?

• Windows Ce 6.0 loses Windows credentials when viewing a web site that's running on Windows 2008 server

- by gnomixa
When a user views a web page (with integrated Windows authentication) on WindowsCE 6.0 device, the authentication is lost sporadically. The page being viewed is running on Windows 2008 server. We never had the same issue with Windows 2003 server. The credentials were being asked once and cached for a certain time. My question is: has anything changed in Windows 2008 that doesn't pass the credentials the same way to WindowsCE? The only variable in this scenario is the web server OS - Windows 2003 vs WIndows 2008. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

• Setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 DC + Fileserver : native or virtual?

- by user126890
I want to deploy a new DC + Fileserver using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard Edition on a Dell PowerEdge R410 and iSCSI storage for a small business (~30 people). Should I install the system native on the server or use a virt layer? I don't have a budget for virtualization so i gotta go with something free... What's a better working routine, taking snapshots of vm's or taking backups (Acronis/CloneZilla) of systems? If I use a virt system, I need a GUI for some people in the business to reset the system to a earlier state in emergency situations. I wanted to install phpVirtualBox once but never finished, is it suitable in a productive environment? server specs: Intel Xeon E5620 CPU (2,40GHz, 4C, 12MB Cache) 8GB RAM Dual Rank LV RDIMMs 1333MHz 2x 1TB SATA 7,2K 3,5, RAID1

• How can I grant read-only access to my SQL Server 2008 database?

- by Adrian Grigore
Hi, I'm trying to grant read-only access (in other words: select queries only) to a user account on my SQL Server 2008 R2 database. Which rights do I have to grant to the user to make this work? I've tried several kinds of combinations of permissions on the server and the database itself, but in all cases the user could still run update queries or he could not run any queries (not even select) at all. The error message I always got was The server principal "foo" is not able to access the database "bar" under the current security context. Thanks for your help, Adrian

• Does multiple files in SQL Server when using RAID help reduce conflicts in growth and file-locking?

- by Dr Giles M
I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then using multiple SQL Server files within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements, and the benefits are purely administrative (if you started to run out of space or wanted to partition off data into managable chunks for backups/balancing the data around your big server room). However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller databases that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on a LOGICAL file basis, so even if you are using RAID, it seems to make sense to have multiple files in a file group to balance I/O, or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

- by ewwhite
I have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two domain controller and the usual services and roles (file, print, Exchange). Restarting the service fails for a variety of reasons. I've had the following messages at different times: "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". "Unable to determine the DHCP Server version for the Server 192.168.x.x" "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." A reboot of the domain controller resolves the issue for ~2 weeks. The systems are virtualized and there are no network connectivity issues. Any ideas what's happening here?

• Windows Server Backup - Can I restore to a particular revision?

- by hamlin11
I'm using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 to do a scheduled daily backup to a dedicated hard-drive on the server. I noticed that under "All backups" it says I have 45 copies. Does this mean that I can restore to any revision of my data upon system failure? If the answer is yes, then I don't have to worry about taking monthly or weekly snapshots of my data. I'm concerned about a data corruption event occurring that working its way into my backups... then not having a clean snapshot to go back to. Thanks!

• Is there a simple way to backup and restore all Microsoft SQL Server database objects related to a p

- by Nathan Hartley
I would like to backup, not only the databases that belong to a particular application living on a shared server, but also, those things that get stored outside of the database; the server accounts, jobs, maintenance plans and whatever else I can't think of at the moment. This backup should be complete enough that it's corresponding restore will recreate the entire application on a different SQL server. This seems like a problem others must have dealt with in the past. So before I embark on creating custom Powershell scripts for each application, I have come to ask you... Can you help?

• SQL Server 2008 CPU usage goes to 100% - troubleshooting help needed?

- by Ali
I have a fairly powerful database server having SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. There is only one database on it which is being accessed from 2 servers (around 5/6 applications). The problem is as soon as applications start pointing to the database, system's CPU usage goes upto 100% with sqlserver itself using 95+%. I have checked profiler, there aren't any heavy queries running there. I have checked active connections, they are hardly 150. Still CPU usage is around 100% and applications are experiencing slow response/connection to database server are getting refused. Database grus, I really need some ideas here. Thanks.

• Windows Server 2008: How to tell if a user is a 'local' use or a 'domain' user

- by David
I'm a developer, not a server admin, so please bear with me! I've been tasked with checking the installation of some software on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine in the cloud, within two scenarios: There is no domain, the software will use local users and groups for authentication There is a domain, the software will use domain users and groups for authentication I've done part 1, but I'm puzzled about part 2. I've just installed the Active Directory Domain Services role on the server, so now I have a domain of one computer. When I look in Active Directory Users and Computers, I see all my original local users and groups. Have they now been 'promoted' to domain users? Or do I not have any domain users yet? Is there a way I can tell the difference between domain users and local users now? Thanks

• How can I stop Windows DNS server properties settings from changing by themselves?

One of the DNS servers has two network interfaces, and it should only be listening for requests on of them, and I get errors in the Event Log otherwise. But when right clicking one DNS server and selecting Properties, I can see on the Interfaces tab that 'All IP addresses' is selected. If I Change it to 'Only the following IP addresses:' and deleselect the WAN addess, I will find it reslected when I next check it after a couple of days. In the other DNS server's Properties, on the Forwarders tab, there should only be two forwarder addresses. However, the address for the router keeps in appearing. This router has the DNS server as its forwarder. There shouldn't be anything using the router's DNS forwarders for DNS other than the router itself, but this surely is causing a loop. How do I get these properties on both DNS servers to stick?

• Adding a W2008 Authenticating Server to existing W2003 Domain?

- by spelk
I have an existing W2003 Domain, simple setup with one DC and a SQL Server (approx 100 users). There are issues with Windows 7 Clients and login scripts and we're now seeing much greater numbers of Windows 7 users turning up as they upgrade their PC/Laptops. What I want to do, is add another Server with W2008 on it, and authenticate the Windows 7 Clients - but leave the W2003 server running as is - to prevent disruption to the network and the existing WinXP users. Is it possible? Any advice as to how do this, without major disruption to the W2003 network?

• Request to server x Reply from server y

- by klaasio
I need some advice from you guys: I'm dealing with a custom loadbalancer/software for which we will use 2 main servers and about 8 slave servers. In short: User sends request to main server, main server will receive and handle the requests, sends a request to a slave server and slave server should send data DIRECTLY to the "user". User - Main server Main server - Slave server Slave server - User The reason for which data should be send directly to the user and not through the main server is because of bandwidth and low budget. Now I have the following idea's: -IPinIP, but that is not possible in Layer7 (so far i know there some expensive routers for that) -IP Spoof, using C/C++ we will make it look like the reply came from main server. But I was thinking, perhaps the reply "slave server - User" could just come from a different IP without causing issues in the firewall from the user or his anti-virus. I don't know so well about "home" firewalls/routers and/or anti-virus software. I guess the user machine wouldn't handle it well?

• How to unlock sa user in SQL Server 2012 if Windows Authentication doesn't work?

- by Tony_Henrich
I am logged in as an admin on the computer. For some reason I can't log into SQL Server 2012 which is running on the same machine. The SA user is locked out. SQL Server was installed when I was logged in into my company's domain. I am not logged into the domain when I try to log in to sql server. I don't know if this matters st all. However I expect to log using Windows authentication if I am in the administrator group?

• How to communicate between Client and Server in a Client-Server Application?

- by Sanoj
I would like to implement an Client-Server Application, where the business-logic, security validations and a database are at the server and the user interface are at the client. I would like to implement clients in different languages i.e. one in WPF/.NET, one Swing/Java , one in Android/Java and maybe one HTML/JavaScript client. The server will be on Internet, so I would like to be able to have encrypted communication. The client will send some lists of items to be added to the database, or update items, and do some transactions. The server will check if the items are already updated by another client, or update the item, add new items or delete items. How do I solve the communication between clients and the server in such a system? I have been thinking about: http/https webserver, and sending messages in JSON or XML and use Web Sockets for bi-directional communication. Use http in a RESTful way, except when WebSockets are needed. But I guess there are better solutions for native desktop applications than http? CORBA - I have just heard about it, and it's old and complex. Not much talk about it these days. XMPP/Jabber - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. EJabberd seams to be a popular implementation. AMQP - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. RabbitMQ seams to be a popular implementation. Windows Communication Foundation, Java RMI, Java Message Service - but are they language independent? I guess some of these alternatives are on different levels, maybe I can have i.e xmpp or amqp in web sockets over https? What technologys are used for this problem in companies today? and what is recommended to use? I have no experience of them other than webservers and http. Please give me some guidance in this jungle. What are the pros and cons of these technologies in my situation?

• Are there any GOOD Chef, Chef-Server and Chef-Client tutorials out there?

- by btelles
Hi there, Chef from Opscode seems to be really useful for configuring servers and such, but trying to follow their documentation is a little difficult. Some terms are defined after they are used, and definitions sometimes reference new terms that you haven't yet encountered. Anyone know of any GOOD tutorials/walk-throughs for getting a good understanding of Chef, Chef-Server and Chef-Client? I remember seeing one video presentation online, but it barely scratched the surface.

• OpenSSL in C++ email client - server closes connection with TLSv1 Alert message

- by mice
My app connects to a IMAP email server. One client configured his server to reject SSLv2 certificates, and now my app fails to connect to the server. All other email clients connect to this server successfully. My app uses openssl. I debugged by creating minimal openssl client and attempt to connect to the server. Below is the code with connects to the mail server (using Windows sockets, but same problem is with unix sockets). Server sends its initial IMAP greeting message, but after client sends 1st command, server closes connection. In Wireshark, I see that after sending command to server, it returns TLSv1 error message 21 (Encrypted Alert) and connection is gone. I'm looking for proper setup of OpenSSL for this connection to succeed. Thanks #include <stdio.h> #include <memory.h> #include <errno.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <winsock2.h> #include <openssl/crypto.h> #include <openssl/x509.h> #include <openssl/pem.h> #include <openssl/ssl.h> #include <openssl/err.h> #define CHK_NULL(x) if((x)==NULL) exit(1) #define CHK_ERR(err,s) if((err)==-1) { perror(s); exit(1); } #define CHK_SSL(err) if((err)==-1) { ERR_print_errors_fp(stderr); exit(2); } SSL *ssl; char buf[4096]; void write(const char *s){ int err = SSL_write(ssl, s, strlen(s)); printf("> %s\n", s); CHK_SSL(err); } void read(){ int n = SSL_read(ssl, buf, sizeof(buf) - 1); CHK_SSL(n); if(n==0){ printf("Finished\n"); exit(1); } buf[n] = 0; printf("%s\n", buf); } void main(){ int err=0; SSLeay_add_ssl_algorithms(); SSL_METHOD *meth = SSLv23_client_method(); SSL_load_error_strings(); SSL_CTX *ctx = SSL_CTX_new(meth); CHK_NULL(ctx); WSADATA data; WSAStartup(0x202, &data); int sd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP); CHK_ERR(sd, "socket"); struct sockaddr_in sa; memset(&sa, 0, sizeof(sa)); sa.sin_family = AF_INET; sa.sin_addr.s_addr = inet_addr("195.137.27.14"); sa.sin_port = htons(993); err = connect(sd,(struct sockaddr*) &sa, sizeof(sa)); CHK_ERR(err, "connect"); /* ----------------------------------------------- */ /* Now we have TCP connection.
