  I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu.   I've got Django 1.0.2 installed on Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to upgrade Django, because I have an app that needs Django 1.1 or greater. Following the upgrade, sessions no longer work correctly. PHP executes fine correctly, however session data does not get saved. I have session data stored in c:\temp. For each session created, I can see the session file in this folder. However no information gets written into the session file. Permissions wise, IUSR and EVERYONE has write access to this folder. If I downgrade to PHP 5.2, sessions are saved correctly and the site functions correctly. I have followed advise to ensure my code is optimised. closing session files correctly and forcing a session reset. • How do I restart a Windows XP upgrade?

  Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over? It tries to continue where it left off after I reboot. I can get to the Recovery Console. I tried to go from SP2-SP3. It failed, and I couldn't get to Safe Mode. I put in the SP1 disk (I don't have an SP2 boot disk, just the upgrade package.) It ran a couple minutes then gave me the error "the signature for windows xp professional upgrade is invalid" error code 800b0100. I rebooted to Safe Mode. I get to Safe Mode then say "Window XP Setup can't run under Safe Mode" press ok to restart. I put the SP3 disk back in, trying to get the "repair" option I didn't ever see putting in the SP1 disk, and it tried to continue the SP1 install - on the 4th step, and then gave the same signature error above. I need to get it to start over, so I can get to the repair option, to go back to SP2 (or install SP1 then add SP2 to it). Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over?

  I wanted to increase the performance on my development laptop so I added an Intel 320 Series SSD as my primary drive. Everything is amazingly fast, as expected, except Apache/PHP. I develop Magento by using an Ubuntu 10.10 virtual machine. Information: Host OS: Win 7 Professional 64bit Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.10 32bit Processor: i7 Chipset QM55 SSD: Intel 320 Series 160gb 30% full HDD: Hitachi 320gb 50% full (in side bay using an adapter) Laptop: Lenovo T510 Using: Shared folders Apache Version: 2.2.16 PHP Version: 5.3.3-1 APC Version: 3.1.3p1 APC Memory: 128M Using tmpfs for cache, log, session directories in Magento In the VM running on the SSD (VM files and source files are on the same drive) loading a product page in the Admin takes on average 26.2 seconds and uses 100% CPU for nearly the entire time. In the VM running on the old HDD loading the same page takes on average 4.4 seconds. It mostly uses around 40-50% of the CPU while rendering the page. I have read this post: Performance issues when using SSD for a developer notebook (WAMP/LAMP stack)? It says to change some settings in the bios. I have turned any and all power management features off in the bios. I can't for the life of me understand why this would be happening.

  I'm using WSS 3 and I recently added a new web application to my SharePoint Server. After adding it, I wasn't able to open the Central Administration site. I also noticed that there was a w3wp.exe error (Event ID 1000) in the Event Viewer. The situation now is that the w3wp.exe process is hovering around 50% CPU usage continuously. I installed a program called IIS Peek, and it shows continuous GET requests on the Central Administration site; this happens even if I stop the Central Administration site in IIS. The IP addresses identified in the GET request is my workstation, which is what I used to attempt to access Central Administration after I created the new web application. Can someone explain what's going on and how I might fix it? It seems as if my computer tried to access Central Administration and then it hung, but the page requests that were happening at the time are somehow continuing over and over again. So my two problems are the inability to access Central Administration, and the CPU Usage of w3wp.exe, which I'm assuming are two symptoms of the same problem. I'd like to know if there's anything I can do besides restarting IIS, because we have clients accessing other sites on this server. Thanks.

• Archive Manager, SQL 2005 and MaxTokenSize high CPU

  So, I posted this question a few days ago: Impact of increasing the MaxTokenSize for Kerberos Tickets Since then the thought was to test our settings on two member servers, one with IIS and one without. I setup two GPOs to configure the MaxTokenSize reg setting to 48000 and MaxFieldLength/MaxRequestBytes to 64200 (based on MS KB2020943, these are set at 4/3 * T + 200). The member server seemed to work ok (a devalued tape backup server). The IIS server however has had some strange repercussions. The IIS Sserver host Quest Software Archive Manager (AM) 4.5 that communicates with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on Server 2003 R2. After the changes all looked good until the SQL Server hit 100% CPU. I have removed the GPOS, removed the reg values and even replaced them with defaults (12000 for token size and can't remember the other one but was in a blog post about the issue in my other post). No change. Bouncing the IIS Server stops the high CPU and a colleague has looked at the SQL server and it is definitely the AM connection taking up the time/work on the SQL server. I haven't changed the reg values on the SQL server or the DCs but am reluctant to do so without understanding why this has happened. I am guessing its to do with the overriding auth and group issue we have but I am not seeing Kerberos errors in either event log. Has anyone seen something similar or does anyone have some tips? Was definitely blindsided by the Kerberos issue and am swimming against the tide to keep things functioning.

• Compaq Motherboard gives "CPU Fan Error"

  I have a motherboard for a HP business desktop dx5150 PC. The model written on the board is "MS-7050" and it is for an AMD socket 939 processor. I got everything installed in it, and when I turned it on, it showed a message stating that there was a "CPU Fan Error" (or some similar language) and then turned off. It never stays on for more than about 30 seconds, probably less. The fan had previously been working great, but I replaced it anyway with a brand new Cooler Master fan. This did not work. I then reset the BIOS with the jumpers on the board, no dice. I replaced the CMOS battery. Same error. I then replaced the entire computer power supply with a brand new Antec, same error. The fan header is keyed, and has room for 3 pins. The CPU fan is designed the same way, so its not that I'm missing a temperature sensor or anything. Can anyone give some suggestions? Especially maybe some secret keystrokes to bypass this error?

• Random server lag, no CPU/mem/pagefile usage

  We have a fairly new server running Windows 2003 SP2, and the past few days we've noticed random slowdowns. When I'm logged into the server over remote desktop while this is happening, or if I'm physically sitting at the server logged in, suddenly everything becomes extremely laggy. Any UI element I try to interact with takes upwards of ten seconds to react, and then responds very slowly. Then a minute later everything is quite snappy again. During this, I have Task Manager minimized to the tray, and there's no CPU usage. I open it up right after this happens, and there's very little CPU usage on the graph, and no memory or pagefile usage above normal. (Normal being 1.5 GB free in the case of memory.) This is what I see logged into the server, and then users start calling saying things are slow, timing out, and failing--anything to do with our server. No events in the Event Viewer around the times this happens. The context I'm working in (last thing I clicked, etc.) seems different every time--different programs active, different combinations of programs open. Never anything particularly stressful (like adding an event entry to a Cobian Backup configuration, or editing text in TextPad, which has been exceptionally stable in my extensive usage of it.) I would've thought it was just the server, but a family member's home PC (entirely separate) running WinXPSP3 had the same thing happen to it last night a few times. Is this some new behaviour introduced by the latest Windows Updates? Either way, where do I even start to look when nothing seems to be chewing up resources?

• Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• Terminal Server CPU usage at 100%

  I'm running a terminal server with around 50-60 users,and every so often the server will go from 40% usage to 100%. I took a closer look an it seems every time this happens, a different user or two seem to be caught in a loop and end up using < 30% where the rest of the users only use a maximum of 5%. The company behind the software we use clame it's due to the servers inadequate hardware (It's a VM system running on a dual - quad core setup) which to me sounds like BS! I'm fairly new to this level of IT so if I misspoke I apologize. I have no way to prove it but I believe adding more raw hardware power wont do me any good as this to me seems like a bug in their software, and it will suck up as much ( or little) CPU as it's given. The VM in question has 4 vCPU cores and 12 GB RAM available, and is running Windows Server 2008, 64-bit Thanks in advance for your help! • Can't upgrade MySQL Server on new Ubuntu 12.04 install

I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

• procdump on w3wp.exe: Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

  I'm having a problem with an IIS application that occasionally spikes up in CPU usage, and am trying to use procdump to get a memory dump for examination. I'm running "procdump.exe -64 -mA 9999" where 9999 is the pid of the process. But every time I do it, I get an error: Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed. Doing this also recycles the apppool, relieving the CPU spike, so I can't keep trying until I get it right. Does anyone know what is going wrong? EDIT WITH MORE INFO: So far I've failed to generate a debug dump no matter what tool I try. All of them seem to generate the same sort of error. This is 2008 R2 Datacenter running IIS7 with a 64-bit asp.net web site. My best guess is that something is getting blocked, causing some requests to remain open in IIS and gradually using up resources. If I monitor the worker process using the IIS Manager and view all requests, throughout the day I'll start to see some requests that "stick" and run forever. Some of these are for static files. Some are for aspx pages. I cannot see any "common" reason for them. Every once in a while the app pool starts taking up 100% CPU and the only remedy is to kill it.

  Hi, I was learning about Intel 8086-80486 CPUs and their interactions with HW. But I still don´t understand it quite well. Please, help me fill blank spots. First, I know that CPU communicates with HW using BIOS interrupts. But, what really happens in PC, when I call some INT instruction? I know that according the interrupt table some instructions begin to execute, but how by executing some instructions can BIOS recognize what I want to do? Becouse as far as I know, CPU has no extra communication channel with BIOS, it can only adress memory and receive data. So how can I instruct BIOS to do something, when I can only address RAM? Next thing I don't understand is about privilege levels. I know about ring model, and access rights, but how does the CPU know which privilege level has executed an instruction? I think that these privileges apply only when intruction is trying to address memory, but how does an application get its privilege level? I mean I know its level 3, but how is it set? And last thing, I know that paging is address scheme that is used to support aplication-transparent virtual memory, or swapping, but I could not find any information about how paging is tied with protected mode. Like if paging is like next mode independent of protected mode, or its somehow implemented within protected mode. And if it is implemented in protected mode, isn´t it too slow, to first address application space, then offset, and then paging folder, page and offset once again?

• Intel Core i7 QuadCore on HP Pavilion dv7 Overheating Issues

  I bought a brand new HP notebook: HP Pavilion dv7-6b21em BeatsAudio edition. The notebook is about 2 months old and has pretty nasty overheating problem. I mainly use it for development however i do play some games. The disturbing thing is that the computer is loud on pretty simple tasks. Here are the specs: CPU: Intel Core i7-2670QM QuadCore ( 8 threads ) @ 2.20 GHz RAM: ( 8GB ) 2x 4GB @ 1066 HDD: 1TB 7200 GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6770M 1GB Dedicated DDR OS: Windows 7 64bit Enterprise I have an external monitor runing on VGA port an 22' Samsung SyncMaster S24B300 CPU Heat Statistics Platform: rPGA 988B (Socket G2) Frequency: cca. 3000 Mhz VID: 1.1809 - 1.2059 v Revision: D2 CPUID: 0x206A7 TDP: 45.0 Wats, Lithographu: 32 nm Heat: Tj. Max: 100*C, Power 4.5 - 5.9 Wats Core #0: 63*C Load on all is about 0 to 2% Core #1: 65*C Core #2: 66*C Core #3: 67*C I opened the notebook the fan is working fine there is no dust but still right now the fan is pretty loud even tho all i have open is FireFox. When i run a game the heat jumps to whopping 90-97*C. It has not shut down due to overheating yet but the loud fan is pretty annoying considering I'm not really doing anything stressfull. Is there anything i can do to fix this is it maybe a BIOS issue ? I have all drivers updated tho to the latest. I have very few background processes running consuming bare 2GB of RAM and about 2% of CPU. I had it serviced they said there is nothing wrong with it. But i feel that a Notebook that costs 1.2k Euros cant be like this.

  I've been trying to upgrade my installation of Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, but all of the instructions I've found haven't been helping. They mostly say to run the update manager and it'll tell you that there's a new distribution ready. Well, mine doesn't say that. Things I've run or checked: update-manager -d says: Your system is up-to-date The package information was last updated less than one hour ago. I've set it to get all new distributions, not just LTS $ cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades [DEFAULT] # default prompting behavior, valid options: # never - never prompt for a new distribution version # normal - prompt if a new version of the distribution is available # lts - prompt only if a LTS version of the distribution is available Prompt=normal I'm definitely running 9.04 $ lsb_release -r Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 Codename: jaunty Even running the release upgrade from console doesn't help: $ sudo do-release-upgrade Checking for a new ubuntu release No new release found This is running from behind a proxy, but I've set it up such that the regular upgrades and apt-get etc doesn't complain. • mpirun -np N, what if N is larger than my core number?

  Say I have a 4-core workstation, what would linux (Ubuntu) do if I execute mpirun -np 9 XXX Q1. Will 9 run immediately together, or they will run 4 after 4? Q2. I suppose that using 9 is not good, because the remainder 1, it will make the computer confused, (I don't know is it going to be confused at all, or the "head" of the computer will decide which core among the 4 cores will be used?) Or it will be randomly picked. Who decide which one core to call? Q3. If I feel my cpu is not bad and my ram is okay and large enough, and my case is not very big. Is it a good idea in order to fully use my cpu and ram, that I do mpirun -np 8 XXX, or even mpirun -np 12 XXX. Q4. Who decides all of these effciency optimization, Ubuntu, or linux, or motherboard or cpu? Your enlightenment would be really appreciated.

• Building a PC for Work and play? [closed]

  Ok, Its been a long time since I build my own PC so I'm looking to get back into it again and build a new one. First off budget is about €800 excluding the monitor and windows 7 licence and mouse. (just bought a new g500) I plan on using my computer for work, lots of applications open at once but none particularly excessive (photoshop being the most demanding, mostly coding tools) I also use it for some gaming, e.g. COD, Starcraft etc. One thing I do want to do eventually is get a really good monitor with hight resolution and maybe 27" so the graphics card needs to be able to make best use of that. So a few questions 1) Is the bottle neck in performance mostly still the harddrives? 2) Aren't most processors e.g. i5 etc even i3 so far a head of other bottlenecks it makes litte difference the higher you go. Isn't the Graphics card dealing with heavy graphics so what really slows because of a slow CPU? So from this my thinking is to get a SSD drive as my primary drive for OS etc and have loads of memory e.g. 6-8GB and a decent mid level graphics card? It doesn't seem at my level worth spending much on CPU and any other parts really. I basic parts off the top of my head Case, Motherboard CPU SSD Drive SATA Drive Power Supply Memory Cooling (fan?) Graphics Card Network Card Keyboard DVD drive Mouse Windows Monitor Am I missing anything? Any helpful tips or general education much appreciated. Thanks, Derek
