  Some time ago, I upgrade my FreeBSD box to 7.1-RC2, but now I'd like to move to 7.2-RELEASE. I tried running # uname -mrsi FreeBSD 7.1-RC2 i386 GENERIC # freebsd-update upgrade -r 7.2-RELEASE Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 3 mirrors found. Fetching metadata signature for 7.1-RC2 from update4.FreeBSD.org... failed. Fetching metadata signature for 7.1-RC2 from update5.FreeBSD.org... failed. Fetching metadata signature for 7.1-RC2 from update2.FreeBSD.org... failed. No mirrors remaining, giving up. Substituting 7.1 for 7.2 gives the same error. Adding a --debug option shows the failure as being fetch: http://update4.FreeBSD.org/7.1-RC2/i386/latest.ssl: Not Found Is there any way to still do a binary upgrade of this system as the 7.1-RC* directories don't exist on http://update.freebsd.org anymore? Upgrading from source is an option, but I wanted to see if there was some way to salvage this installation.

• Software way to cool down an old MacBook Pro

  Hi all, First a little background: I've got lots of computers, including Linux PCs and two MacBook Pro (and a MacMini). My concern is with my 'old' MacBookPro (Core Duo). It really does overheat. Warranty is long void. Years ago (I'd say 2.5 years ago or so) one day it overheated so bad that the battery inflated due to the heat. I got a new battery for free but it's still getting incredibly hot (much other than any other computer I've got: my newer Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro doesn't get nearly as hot as the old one. It s really a pain because I use my old MBP when I m in front of TV, having it on my lap, and it can really become unbearable. I don't want to open that old MBP. On Linux I can force a new CPU 'governor' that decides how the CPU is allowed to operate: it can be 'on demand', 'always max speed', 'always speed x', etc. Does the same exist under MacOS X? Is there a way, say if a 1.86 Ghz Core Duo can run at 1.6 Ghz, to ask MacOS X: "never run this CPU above 1.6 Ghz" ?

• What are the biggest, best CPUs that support Physical Address Extension?

  I'm looking for a CPU that will support PAE and fit into an LGA775 socket. This combination of technology is very much preferred for my current server hardware/software setup. My priorities in order of highest to lowest: PAE & LGA775 At least 1066Mhz FSB Largest CPU cache possible Multiple Cores if possible HyperThreading if possible Most other factors are of little-to-no consequence. I'm finding it very difficult to figure out what my options are. Intel doesn't have much useful information on PAE (since x64 is so dominant), and Wikipedia simply says that "PAE is provided by Intel Pentium Pro (and above) CPUs - including all later Pentium-series processors except the 400 MHz bus versions of the Pentium M." All of Intel's listed Pentium CPU's support Intel64, which makes me seriously doubt they will support PAE with a 32-bit OS. And Wikipedia's claim is so vague, I have no idea if they mean up-to-and-including the x64 Prescott CPUs. PAE is supposed to be an aspect of the x86 architecture, and I believe it is no longer supported in an x64 environment. Please correct me if I am wrong.

• What is the difference between these Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs?

  The CPU in question is the Pentium Extreme Edition 955. Intel's website shows four "versions", but for the most part they all look identical. They even share the same set of ordering codes. But one of them has a substantially lower TDP, which is seemingly unexplainable - since everything else is the same. Two of them say "LGA775, Tray" and I have no idea what "Tray" means either. Also, two of them have a different SPEC code. What I need to know is: What does "LGA775, Tray" mean? Why does the one CPU have a lower TDP? And what does that mean for me? Does that mean lower maximum power consumption? Does it mean the CPU may be more stable/endurant, because of a lower heat output? Why do two of them have a different SPEC code, and what does this mean? Finally, what does PLGA775 (as opposed to LGA775) mean, and do I need to be worried about that? • linux: per-process monitor, every 10 minutes, with history access

  I really didn't know a better way to ask my question, hence you get a horribly named question. I will explain what i want to do, maybe that will help you help me. I would like to have my linux machine continuously monitor (every 10 minutes) all the processes on my machine. The information from each process that I require is the name, CPU usage, allocated (virtual) memory, and resident (ram) memory. If these periodic reports were to be looked at, they would look something like this: PROCESS CPU RAM VIRTUAL name1 % MB MB name2 % MB MB ...etc..etc These reports should be stored in such a way that I can access them at a later date by giving a date/time scope (range). For instance, if I want to see the history of my processes from 12:00:00 1.12.12 till 12:00:00 2.12.12 I can - and it should give me the history of the processes for every 10 minutes between those date/time borders. The format of the return is not important, that will be handled by a script anyway and can be modified into anything I need. I have looked into a few things so far, but have not found something that clearly meets my needs. Among the things i searched: sar, free(1), top(1).. and a few other things. It should be a simple issue, i can already see all this information by simply looking at my htop, but i need only a tool that will gather the desired fields for me for each processes every 10 minutes, and then also let me extract slices of that data based on date/time scopes (ranges). note: I have limited experience with linux, so please give detailed information. note2: The desired output will be something like this (after receiving the desired range) CPU USAGE BY PROCESS: proc_nameA 1,2,2,2,2,2...... numbers represent % usage every 10 minutes... proc_nameB 4,3,3,6,1,2...... • Upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 - Apache not able to start

  I updated to Ubuntu 13.10 (from Ubuntu 13.04) last weekend, and now Apache is not being able to start. It was working perfectly well until the upgraded, and I haven't changed anything myself. When I ran a restart this is what I get apache2: Syntax error on line 260 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/conf.d/: No such file or directory So, I created the directory, and then I get this: * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed. • Problems after upgrading my ubuntu to Ubuntu 14.04 lts

  I have problems after upgrading my older Ubuntu version to Ubuntu 14.04 lts. • nvidia driver problem after update

  I know there are a lot of posts about nvdia driver, but I am not able to solve this. I updated my configuration yesterday, September 27th, and it seems that a new nvidia driver was involved. The updated completed with an error, and invited me to send a bug report automatically. I send it, but it finally said that there was no place to send the bug report to. Today I updated again, and a new kernel was there. Then I rebooted. I found a desktop in 640x480 with a horrible, unreadable font. I run jockey and tried to go back to another version of the nvidia driver, but it seems that none of the drivers listed there are suddenly valid.   When I tried to update my Ubuntu through the update manager I received an error about some unknown resource. so i tried doing it from the terminal with sudo apt-get update but all I got is: 0% [Connecting to 192.168.43.1 repeating itself... and when I press Enter it shows: W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-security/universe/i18n/Translation-en Unable to connect to 192.168.43.1:8000: E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. How can I get this to work?

  i have upgraded my ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. i could not see other login option in the login screen. it shows only Guest login and User login. The User Login ask only password and i had never entered in as User login so that i do not know about password of User login. my problem is how to login as root from the login screen? how can i get Other login option to login as root or some other user? before ask this question i have tried the following: try to add the greeter-show-manual-login=true line at the bottom of /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file as Guest login but i get access denied error. i do not know the password of User login (ask only password while login) to purpose of adding above line. from the safe mode login, i could login as root but i could not add the above line the lightdm.conf file . i got read only error so that i tried to change the permission to 777 like the following > chmod 777 lightdm.conf (i am within the /etc/lightdm/). but i got the error the file marked as/is read only in the file system. In 11.10 version i have created 4 users. i can see that the users exist in 12.10 . so i am sure my self users are not removed while upgrate. • How can I troubleshoot flash player/hardware conflict?

  OBJECTIVE: Have a web browser on my Ubuntu install that can play youtube and hulu videos. Also would like to understand problem so that I can fix it again if I change software. Workarounds welcome, technical understanding and solution preferable. SYMPTOMS: Flash does not run - cannot make the right-click menu appear, an empty box is where video should be, changes to black box when hovering over other links. The "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed" message does not appear with its sad lego face. cannot activate proprietary graphics driver - causes system to reboot to a prompt. SOLUTIONS TRIED: Replaced OS (tried slackware 13.37, fedora 17, linuxmint 13 maya, gentoo, lubuntu, and even winXP. lubuntu confirmed to work, don't remember how much tweaking, if any, this required. Slack, fedora, mint, and gentoo all failed to run flash just like ubuntu) many reinstalls of flash player via different methods, including cleaning up old installs first, also tried gnash and lightspark. replaced graphics card (replaced HIS IceQ Radeon HD 4670 AGP with older GeForce 5700 LE no change in problem) flash does successfully work on winXP installation with Catalyst AGP hotfix driver applied, however I consider windows wholly unacceptable for web browsing due to lack of security. Lubuntu install also works, however I do not want to be tied down to just using Lubuntu on this computer. SYSINFO: Have latest versions of Ubuntu, Firefox, and Flash on fresh Ubuntu install. Using Gigabyte 7s748 motherboard with Athlon XP 2800+ and 3 GB of RAM with Radeon HD 4670 AGP card, also a Dell soundblaster live series sound card (due to malfunction of onboard sound on motherboard) Wired internet connection, Maxtor 6Y120L3 HDD, Sony DVD RW AW-Q170A, Dell M993s monitor. NOTES: I do not know if the graphics driver issue and the flash troubles are linked. Substitution of older graphics card having same flash troubles seems to suggest they aren't. My troubleshooting method is rather reductionist, consisting mainly of "replace things until you find out what was causing the error by process of elimination" only it seems that this must be a conflict which arises when software decides how to configure itself on my hardware. That is, I know the hardware can run Flash, and I know that on other systems the same software can too, but somehow the combination fails. Consequently I feel out of my depth. I will keep trying things off and on, but I have spent probably about 30 man-hours in the last 4 months working on this problem with no joy other than the lubuntu workaround. Any help will be appreciated, I will be checking back and posting updates. Any pertinent questions regarding me or my computer will be answered, outputs from config files can be accessed and posted (IDK which ones or what parts to post).

Sorry to pester this list, but the Ubuntu wiki has no provisions for "Talk" or "Discussion" that do not require registration and a login. • Idling CPU at 65C, re-place or re-paste?

  Replaced Graphics card because screen would go black at a certain temp while gaming, but sound would stay on (but locked up). Then with replacement card whole PC shuts off during gaming now because the CPU is overheating. Note: CPU is only supposed to go up to 71C max according to manufacturer and it goes well over upon load. System Temp: 30C TL;DR: Idling CPU at 65C, started to shut down due to overheating, re-place (CPU, or CPU and Motherboard) or re-paste?
