• How do you confirm network adapter is gigabit capable?

  Upgrading my network to gigabit speeds and don't know how to determine if the NIC in one of the systems is capable of gigabit speed. The documentation from the manufacturer states this: Network adapter 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN on system board However when I go to the properties of the NIC under Speed & Duplex my only options are: 10 Mb Full 10 Mb Half 100 Mb Full 100 Mb Half Auto Is there a command line I can run that will give me more detail about the NIC? Windows 7 x64 OS New Info: The new switch I just bought has a light to indicate 1000Mbps. I can tell from the light that this NIC is indeed negotiating at 1000Mbps but I'd still like to know how to determine this from the console in windows.

• mini linux for browsing media playing

  I'm looking for a small linux install (<100Mb) that can just run a browser and ideally a media player. It's to fit in a spare recovery partition on my laptop and be a quick boot for non-work stuff when I'm on the road. I have used Puppy-linux and DSL before but they have lots of stuff I don't need. Is there something like these that just concentrates on running a browser in the way xbmc does for videos? ps. The size requirement was to fit in the existing 100Mb win7 recovery partition, but that can be resized. The main idea was something that booted very quickly without the 10min wait while windows does all the corporate stuff and realizes it isn't on the LAN - and could be shutdown instantly.

• How to get started with tcp/ip v6?

  Hi Now and then there is "news" about that the ip numbers will run out in X years, and we must change to tcp/ip v6... And even thou this crisis never really happens it has waken a question, how do you get started with tcp/ip v6? What can I do at home and is this a good or bad idea? Can you use IPv4 and IPv6 in the same cables in the same LAN, or do you need to physically separate them? Can you have some translation box so you can reach the "normal" internet from the IPv6 connected devices? (Just like a NAT-Router) Can someone please clarify the situation a little bit? Thanks Johan

• Connect work laptop (domain) to home workgroup

  Is there an easy way to have my work laptop connect to a home workgroup for file sharing with my other PCs, but then easily switch back to connecting to my work domain when I'm at work? I have the following setup: Windows 7 Home Premium Server/HTPC 2 Windows XP laptops 1 Vista laptop (Work) The work laptop connects to a work domain, the remaining computers are on a home workgroup for sharing files/printer. Also is it possible to share files over my LAN while I'm connected to the work domain, but at home? I've tried Live Mesh, but my 2 home laptops are very slow and don't work well with it. I also use Dropbox, but I'd like to be able to share larger files. I may be missing a simple solution here...

• SNMP counter issues with cisco RV082

  Does anyone else poll this router with SNMP? We are using firmware version: 2.0.0.19-tz We are having problems with the traffic counters, some of them appear to be implemented as 16 bit counter instead of 32 bit counters. The reason this is causing problems is that they roll over (at 65,000) to 0 in less than our minute polling cycle, really skewing our metrics. The counter for the Lan (interface 2) seems to be functioning properly, however interfaces 3 and 4 (WAN and DMZ / WAN2) rollover at 65000. • internet connection problem related to a recurring registry error

  I have a Windows XP desktop system connected to the Internet via ethernet LAN. Initially, none of my browsers were connecting to the Internet, but I was able to update my antivirus software and all of my connection settings were perfect. I was able to solve the problem by running WinSock XP, which apparently fixes connection problems that have been caused by registry issues. My problem now is that every time I shut down the machine, the problem comes back (Internet browsers won't connect). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on this? Thanks

At this point, I'm leaning towards Broadcom BCM4318 HP Pavilion zv6000, but I thought it best to ask advice before taking action. • website not accessible with IIS6 while NAT is configured in Windows 2003

  I have Windows2003 server configured with IIS 6. Until now it was working fine, but since I enabled NAT for my users to access the internet via this server, the website becomes unavailable. Note that I have two nics on the server one is WAN and 2nd is for LAN. Both IPs are behind the firewall. If I stop the NAT then the website is available externally. I tried to search the answer in this forum but didn't find appropriate one or maybe didn't properly understand. I'll appreciate if anyone can help me sorting out this issue.

• CentOS 6.5 as WebServer for Django Dev

  During CentOS 6.5 Installation I choose WebServer type for this computer. The server has a static IP address 192.168.111.100. The CentOS was updated I managed to install virtualenv with Python 2.7. Within the virtualenv, I'll be using Django Framework. After I tried to run the command using root user python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:8000 I can't see the website from other computer within the LAN when I try to type 192.168.111.100:8000/admin on my browser. I already disable firewall using service iptables stop I can ping the 192.168.111.100 and I have a good feedback with nslookup. What seems the problem of my config?

• Linux Router - Share bandwidth per IPs with current active connections

  We have a Linux machine running as a custom router, currently utilising Shorewall. This sits between our incoming internet connection and the internal LAN. What we would like to achieve is 'fair use' of the bandwidth on a per IP basis. If only one person currently has an active connection then they get 100% utilisation of the line. However if 20 people have active connections then they should each get 5% utilisation of the line. This should be irrespective of the number of connections held by each user. For example, say we have two users, Bill and Ted, that both have active connections. Bill has a single active connection while Ted has ten active connections. Bill should get 50% utilisation for his single connections whilst Ted should get 5% utilisation for each of his ten connections, giving Ted a total utilisation of 50%.

• TightVNC grey screen?

  I'm trying to help my mom remotely with some PC problems. She's not too computer savvy, so to keep the firewall stuff on my side of things, I tried to use a reverse VNC connection: On my machine, I set up TightVNC client in listening mode. I also opened TCP port 5500 on my router and firewall, and checked it using http://canyouseeme.org/. On her machine, I (instructed her to) set up TightVNC server, and connect to my machine's IP ('Add New Client...'). Both machines run Windows XP & TightVNC 1.3.10. The problem: When she tries to connect, a TightVNC window with grey background pops up on my machine, but I never get to see the remote desktop. It just remains grey. However, it seems that I control the mouse on the remote side (she says it's moving). I tried to reverse-connect from another machine on my LAN and it works without a problem. Any idea what the problem could be?

  Sorry this is probably a very silly question, but for some reason i am confused. How does a LAN with bus or ring topology connect to a router and other LANs? For example in a star network they all connect to a switch which can then connect to a router, but where does a switch go and fit in a bus or ring topology? • Print server does not show up on router's attached devices

  Recently I bought a new more powerful wireless N router, DLink DIR 628. So I removed all connections from the previous router (Netgear WGT624) and connected them as they should be to the DLInk router. Everything works fine except for the print server. I have Hawking print server connected to HP Laserjet 6P parallel port printer. It works well with the Netgear router. But when I connect it to the DLInk router, it does not even show up in the LAN computers list. I am not sure what is going on. There is a utility called PSAdmin that can talk to the Hawking print server if I switch to Netgear router. With that utility, I can get the assigned IP address to the print server. But when switching to DLink router, even the PSAdmin fails to find the print server. I have been trying various things for last couple of days in vein. Please help.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Server Intermittently Unresponsive

  Throughout the day out DNS servers (2x Win 2k8 R2 servers) are unable to respond to requests. The requests that fail are all on the .root zone that are either cached or obtained from 1 of 5 DNS servers we forward to before going to root hints. At first I thought the DNS servers we were forwarding to were flaky. So I added some more in. Currently the forwarding list looks like ISP DNS 1 OPEN DNS 1 ISP DNS 2 OPEN DNS 2 ISP DNS 3 I have tried: Turning off root hints. Set record scavenging to 7 days. Using dnscmd /config /EnableEDNSProbes 0 as per this. Packet capture at the DNS server shows that there is a lot of query responses with server failure between lan clients and the local dns server; it does not appear to be forwarding those requests. So maybe a problem with caching? Anyhow, does anything have anything I can try to get this working?

• Redirecting subsite on same domain to other IIS using HTTPS

  I've seen many similar questions (and answers) on this subject, but none seem to be on exactly the same situation I am facing. Which is weird since I don't think it is that special, so forgive me if I haven't searched enough. Anyway. I have two websites which are on two IIS7, one facing WAN and one in the LAN. The WAN facing is already HTTPS-only. I want to add the second website, but on the same HTTPS domain and SSL certificate, so that it becomes a subsite like: https://www.domain.com/subsite How can I do a redirect or rewrite on the first IIS to the second one to make this work? I don't think there is a standard IIS feature that can do this. ISA server is not an option currently. But maybe another extension to IIS exists? Done this numerous times on Apache, and am about to ditch IIS for Apache.

Is it possible to reach each machine from the outside with something like: http://m1.username.dyndns.org http://m2.username.dyndns.org ? Do you know what needs to be configured in my router for NAT ?   I've played around with a certificate based VPN (normally I don't do hardware) we've manged to setup the connection and the tunnel between the routers is working correctly. We now need the last step. There's no connection to the computers on the other end. What could we have forgotten? (we're testing with two standard configured Win7 machines) EDIT: Just to clarify the tunnel is working I can ping the router on the other end. I can't access the computers on the other side of that router and vice versa. (It's also possible to access the remotemangement console of the remote router on the LAN IP)

• Sonicwall - dual WAN ports - switch from one to another

  Hi, Folks! I'm using a SonicWall NSA 240 which has two WAN ports (T1 and Comcast) and the LAN port has a cable which connects to a switch. From the switch, several cables connect to other switches. The SonicWall doesn't have DHCP enabled; one of our domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 also functions as a DHCP server. Is there a way for a user in our network to change connection from T1 to Comcast as their ISP or vice versa? • TightVNC (or any VNC) viewer windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC viewers, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), and then select all viewer windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC viewers. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC viewers. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? I mean, in lan usar A's maximum donload file size is 300 MB , and user B's maximum download file size in 200 MB.   Hi all, I'm trying to deploy a Snort box in my LAN. I have a Linksys SRW248G4 and trying to configure Port mirroring so that Snort can listen everything on the network in promiscuous mode. So in ADMIN / Port Mirroring, I have 3 things: Source Port (e1,...e48, g1...g4) Type (Rx, Tx, Both) Target (e1...e48, g1...g4) Last time I played with it, I killed all traffic on the switch, I had to reboot it several times... so now I'm asking question before: Do I need to configure each Source Port (from 1 to 48) to forward to the single promiscuous port ? 48 rules !? • Why not all users can log in to a network computer by using <network computer name>/<user name> form

  There is a file server in my office that is not connected to my office LAN. In this server there are folders that are shared. This server is connected to a switch and a wireless router. Everyone who wants to access this server uses wireless network connection. They log in to this server by providing user name and password registered to the server. Some people can log in to my office file server by providing user name in (the server name)/(user name) format, while other must use (the server IP address)/(user name) format. Why is it like this? I need everyone can access the file server by providing user name in (the server name)/(user name) format. I have tried to change the %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, as some suggested, but it won't work. Any other suggestion?

  hi all I have 3 PC's at home (with Win XP, Win 7 & Win 7) and a router. I am always connected to the internet through the router (PPoE connection). My problem is that sometimes when I want to search or open a page, my browser tells me that the server cannot be reached, as if I don't have a connection to the internet. Other times it logs me out from messenger, but browsing still works. FTP download/upload also works. If i disable and enable the LAN then all works fine. Anyone got any idea besides re-installing OS? thanks

  I installed Solaris 10 on my netra machine from dladm show-dev I can see which interface are down or up all interfaces are connected to the Cisco switch , and all leds are light's on all LAN cards but I not understand why all interfaces except e1000g0 are in unknown ? • Networking not working in Windows 7 - "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services"

  I have a homebuilt computer with a GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard with a Realtek RTL8111E LAN chip. Ethernet was working fine in Windows 7 until I reinstalled this OS, but now it's stopped, while still working in other OSes. I've tried reinstalling drivers from both the Gigabyte and Realtek sites to no avail; I've also plugged in and installed an Asus USB-N13 wifi dongle and this doesn't work oddly. How can I diagnose and fix this issue? In 'Network and Sharing Center' says "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process" under the heading 'Unknown'. Following the advice at http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/130159-dependency-service-group-failed-start.html#post1122627 I've gone to 'Control Panel= Admin Tools= Services' and ensured the services listed at that URL are started (one - IIRC 'Come+ Event System' refused to start as user 'Local services' so I've had to set it to log on with the 'Local system account'... I suspect this may be part of the problem).
