• Change environment variables as standard user (Windows 7)

  When clicking on "Advanced system settings", I need to login as the administrator and hence only edit the administrators environment variables (in addition to the machine wide ones). How do I edit the environment variables of a standard user? Details With the migration to Windows 7, I decided to work as a standard user instead of an unprivileged administrator. Works well so far but I encountered a tiny problem: When I try to change per user environment variables via the control panel I have to login as an administrator. But since I run that part of the control panel as the administrator I can only edit the administrators variables. How am I supposed to edit my own environment variables? Without resorting to extreme measures, such as editing the registry (as suggested in "Is there any command line tool that can be used to edit environment variables in Windows?" )

• Where are Adobe Acrobat Pro settings saved

  Hi, I'm trying to figure out where the settings and options of an application(Adobe Acrobt Pro) are saved. This is to modify the settings without opening the application and going through the menu options. I'm trying to change the resolution of TIF settings. I have looked in the program file acrobat folder and the douments and settings but haven't found it. I also looked through the registry entrees just to make sure but didn't see anything relevant. • Windows does not detect any modems anymore[HSPA]

  By an accident i uninstalled my Connect manager (ZTE). but when i re-install it the virtual CD drive is detected but it does not detect the drivers. When i direct to the folder containing the relevant drivers(.sys files) still it doesnt detect. Then i tried a modem of a different brand Huawei the same problem presists As i understand it is not a device(brand) driver specific issue as it does not detect modem(dongles) of any brand. when i plugged in a different USB device(a pen drive) the driver is detected and it works perfectly. Please help me with the issue i have tried system restore but it doesnt work. I want a repair that works without re-installing windows [Edit] I tried Karan's suggested method with usboblivion it didnt work. now im sure that the issue does not deal with the registry

• Need help creating advanced context menu command in Windows 7 (x64)

  I found out about ForceBindIP and I really love it, so much that I am using it regularly enough to where spamming the same command prompt over and over again is getting painful. Here's ForceBindIP and what it does: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/forcebindip/ I'm on a 64-bit of Windows 7 Home Premium. What I want to do is add a right-click context menu item so that when I browse items in Windows Explorer, or on my desktop, I can automate a ForceBindIP command (through the prompt). I am permanently connected to two networks: one over ethernet, and one over wireless. My ethernet network takes priority. What I want to do is add a "Run through wireless network" context menu item, that will send the item through this command: ForceBindIP {5F657824-9E3B-46E5-C21E-F52585R6457E} "[path to right-clicked file here]" It will need to run that command in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. I've no experience at all playing with the Windows registry or writing batch files, anything of that sort. I was wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to assist me?

• Web browser being selective about the sites that it will visit.

  I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem but haven't been able to get anywhere. Since the weekend the web browsers on his computer (Chrome and Internet Explorer on Windows XP) will only let him get to certain sites - for example, he is able to conduct his online banking but he cannot visit www.bbc.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk or www.ancestry.com. There is another computer in the house that goes via the same router and this can connect to both, which suggests it is his machine. I tried running a tracert to www.bbc.co.uk and managed to get through, but the web browser hangs with a message that it is waiting for a response. I tried using the WinSockFix tool in case it was anything to do with a recent registry change but that didn't work either. He can't think of anything that he recently did on his machine to cause the problem. Can anyone help?

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. It looks something like this DOMAIN Default Domain Policy (link enabled) Password Policy (link enabled and enforce) Personal OU Force Password Change (completely empty nothing in this GPO) IT OU Lockout Policy (link enabled and enforced) CS OU Lockout Policy Accouting OU Lockout Policy The password policy and default domain policy both define the same things under Computer ConfigWindows seetings sec settings Account Policies / Password Policy Enforce password History : 24 passwords remembered Maximum Password age : 180 days Min password age: 14 days Minimum Password Length: 6 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store Passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Account Policies / Account Lockout Policy Account Lockout Duration 10080 Minutes Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid login attempts Reset Account Lockout Counter after : 30 minutes IT lockout This just sets the screen saver settings to lock computers when the user is Idle. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone. • How to make Windows 7 use a different name for the Program Files folder?

  How can I properly rename the Program Files folder in Windows 7? That is, not simply rename the directory and create symlinks, but make Windows itself see the location of installed programs as something else. I have already renamed the directory to Programs (using desktop.ini for a localized name in explorer), and made Program Files into a symlink to that, but I wonder if it's ever possible to erase the symlink by configuring Windows to, under all circumstances, assume Programs as the actual name for the programs directory. I heard that it should be possible to choose the name from Windows installation, but I'm not sure. Besides, I don't want to reinstall Windows from scratch. Before you mention %ProgramFiles%, no, it doesn't work. I'm not sure if Windows has that location hard-coded, or if replacing all occurrences in the registry would be enough.

  In windows 7, you can have a "Document" as a menu on the "Start Menu". However, it lead to sub-items "My Documents" and "Public Documents". As well as only me is using my notebook, "Public Documents" is useless and waste me for a click to the "My Documents". So, my question is -- how do I hack the registry(without hacking DLLs) to make the contents in "My Documents" as the first class citizen in the start menu? • Apache Won't Start Windows XP Professional SP3

  I have Xampp Installed on my PC, and it works fine. Every Service starts fine except Apache. I went to Services in Administrative Tools, and tried to start it fro there...no success... I tried Xampp Shell to run apache by typing: "xampp_cli start apache"...fail... I tried reinstallling Xampp...fail I tried turning my computer off/on...fail... I restored the registry from when I first installed xampp when Apache worked...still...fail Any Ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

• New event log nowhere to be found after creating in PowerShell

  Through PowerShell, I am attempting to create a new event log and write a test entry to it, but it is not showing up the Event Viewer. This is the command I'm using to create a new event log: new-eventlog -logname TestLog -source TestLog And to write a new event to it: write-eventlog TestLog -source TestLog -eventid 12345 -message "Test message" After running the first command, there is no "TestLog" log in the event viewer anywhere, and I would expect it to show up in the Applications and Services Logs section. After running the second command, same result. However, I am seeing a registry key for the log at HKLM\SYSTEM\services\eventlog\TestLog. Just not seeing anything in the event viewer. So, 2 questions: When should I be seeing the event log? After it gets created or after I write the first event to it? And, more importantly, why am I not seeing it at all? I'm using Windows Server 2008R2, and am logged in and running the PS as an administrator. Thanks.

• How to remove 'ApacheMonitor.exe' from notification area

  For some reason I had 2 instances of Apache running, and I have no idea how. I also had two instances of ApacheMonitor.exe showing in the "Notification Area Icons" place when you right click on your taskbar and go to properties. To fix the multiple instance issue, I deleted Apache completely and uninstalled the service (I did not use the .msi, I install from a .zip). Anyways, Everything from Apache is gone except the two things in the Notification Area Icon page. Does anyone know how to remove these two icons? I have completely uninstalled Apache, cleaned my registry with CCleaner, and rebooted. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Despite what the picture says, I do NOT have Apache installed, and it is not running.

  I found this in the Event Viewer logs: The description for Event ID 11 from source RAMDiskVE cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. Which doesn't say much. The details don't reveal much more: Failed to read configuration information from registry. 0000000002002C00000000000B0007C0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 So my question is, what is RAMDiskVE and what device is it for? Basically I'm trying to rule out hardware but I have no idea what's failing...

• Identifying the version of ATI Catalyst drivers

  I have bought a new video card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5670 chipset. I couldn't make it work with the latest ATI Catalyst drivers found on their website, only the drivers found on the CD delivered with the card worked. How can I know the version of Catalyst that is installed on my PC (running Windows 7 64-bits)?   I am setting up a small network and i am stuck at rerouting the Links folder on Windows 7. What i am trying to accomplish is to keep some particular directories stored on a server and all client computers will actually link to those folders, one of which is the Links folder. I took a look at the registry and found most of the things in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders But the Links folder isn't there so im wondering if it's possible to sync that folder over several PCs too without moving all the user directories to the server Any hint is appreciated!

• Disable ability to add startup items in Windows 7?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

• VirtualBox reinstalling & updating has left me with Too Many Network Adapters. How Do i remove them?

  I have too many network adapters. I have had to reinstall, repair VirtualBox a few times, and I have three NICs in my laptop. I definitely don't need to have 14 bridged networking drivers though, and I cannot uninstall them. I only want to keep the new ones that came with VirtualBox 4.1.20. When I go into the registry there are tons of places with these adapters. I have searched online up to 10 pages of Google, and VirtualBox forums, and no one has mentioned this problem nor explained how to delete these annoying extra network adapters. Please offer some assistance or at least tell me how anybody else has dealt with this. I only need 1 host-only network adapter, 1 bridged networking adapter for each of my network cards. • ADMIN$ and other shares not working remotely on XP machines

  I'm trying to use ADMT to migrate several XP machines to a new domain and the utility (nor command line) is able to access the admin$ share or any drive share. I've added the required registry key (HKCurrent\Services\LanMan\Param) for both servers and workstation admin sharing, rebooted the PC and still am unable to access it. How can I access the admin share on these PCs? If it helps, this machine used to have McAfee installed, and the Windows firewall enabled. I stoppped both of them and the machine is still not allowing me to access it remotely by a drive$ share.

• How do I run unsigned driver permanently?

  I compiled my own truecrypt for windows and doing the suggested F8 to run unsigned drivers worked. I was able to install and run truecrypt successfully. However when i restart the machine and let it boot normally I can no longer use truecrypt because of unsigned drivers even though I have it installed. What can I do to boot normally and use my build of truecrypt? Can i modify the registry, add an exception, can i sign my own driver without paying anything (but it probably only work on my machine which is 100% fine), What can i do to run my own truecrypt build on a normal bootup?

• Cannot boot to HDD or Optical when Motherboard in AHCI mode

  I have an Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard and am trying to swap over to AHCI mode. I have an existing Windows 7 installation which was installed under IDE mode. I have set the msahci registry setting to 0. When I try to boot in AHCI mode I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have tried booting with my Win 7 DVD in the optical drive. There is 1 SSD (System), 1 HDD (Data) and 2 optical drives connected via SATA If I switch back to IDE mode everything boots fine, either from the SSD or from a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Why can't I use AHCI mode?

• CLI way of uninstalling a Windows update?

  Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

• screensavergraceperiod not working

  Good Morning, in windows XP there is a registry setting called ScreenSaverGracePeriod which lets you set a time period between the activation of the screensaver and locking of the screen. As as result, as soon as you see the screensaver beeing activated, you have X seconds to press a key or move the mouse in order to avoid having to log in again. Unfortunately, this setting isn't working on my machine. I tried everything I could find on the net (setting the period as stirng or number), but it still does not work. Could it be that some kind of security suite (Symantec) or anything else is blocking this feature? Cheers, Ralf

• Windows 7 login screen show only last user and "Other User" icons after profile problem.

  I recently had a profile problem with my Windows 7 PC. My original profile in the registry had ".bak" appended to it and a new profile was created. I was unable to login with the new profile. I fixed this immediate problem by logging on in safe mode. This enabled me to restore my original profile. However, since that moment the login screen now operates differently. Instead of showing icons for all the users with accounts on the PC, it now only shows two icons. The first icon is the last user who logged on and the second icon always shows "Other User". I have tried several different solutions recommended by other people with similar problems, but none of them have fixed the problem. I think the person who started this thread has the same problem, but none of the proposed solutions helped him either. Any help much appreciated.

• Error: Unable to load OraOps10.dll

  Hello, I have NT services compiled with 32 bit version of oracle client on windows 7, but when I run this service on windows 2008 I get error: Unable to load OraOps10.dll. I guess that this is because I have newer version of oracle client on the server then on my development station, but I can not install old (32 bit version) client on server, and can not install 64 bit client on development station... So may be there is some solution like manually to copy some files and change values in registry? Thank you for ahead.
