• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, experiences and guidance.

  I have 2 unique networks. They both share similar architecture: Windows 2003 SBS SP2 Running Symantec Endpoint Running Symantec Information Foundation Shared drives off a data partition Clients running Office 2003 or 2007 Connect to file server through mapped drives When users try to open a file from their local PC by double clicking, it will take 30-60 seconds to open. When they do File - Open, those same documents open up almost immediately. So far I've tried the following - CCleaner to parse the registry of outdated mapped drives - Disabled "using DDE" - Disabled A/V - Reboot Any ideas beyond that? Figured this question belongs here instead of SU since its the same issue on different networks.

• ForceAutoLogon Ignored in windows 7 when setting up Autologin - Autologon

  I am attempting to setup automatic logon for a windows 7 kiosk computer via the registry. I have set the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon like this: AutoAdminLogon = 1 ForceAutoLogon = 1 DisableCAD = 1 I have filled out the username and password fields. I have also deleted all EULA related values (a prerequisite of ForceAutoLogon) I have done this procedure on 2 computers. On computer A: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we logon automatically immediately after logging out. On computer B: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we are presented with a logon menu where the user needs to click a user name & then enter a password. It seems like the value of ForceAutoLogon requires some other prerequisite that is met on computer A, but not on computer B. What do I need to make computer B act like computer A when clicking the log off button from the windows start menu?

• Remove Sync Center icon

  I accidentally marked a shared folder as "Available Offline" in Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1 computer. This seems to have "woken up" the Sync Center and caused the Sync Center icon to be displayed in the system notification area. Even though I've undid that by marking the folder as not available offline, and furthermore have reset CSC and disabled Offline Files, the Sync Center icon still appears in the overflow section of the system notification area. How do I remove the Sync Center icon and preferably disable the process that is displaying it? Debugging info: The registry shows that stuff is enabled, even though the Sync Center and Offline Files dialog don't indicate that anything is active. • Disable "Send as XPS Attachment" Word 2007

  Is there a way to disable this option either via Group Policy or via some form of registry hack? Normally I would go down the route of telling users not to send as XPS and send as something else but with our recent upgrade to 2007 lots of users are banding these files around. Unfortunately our version of Citrix does not play nicely with XPS documents and we end up having to log them out. Am told the fix for Citrix is not forthcoming so wondered if I could bury my head in the sand and disable the option all together. Regards Tim

  hI, I want to configure my machine for automatic collection of a process dump file and process termination as mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910904. But after setting the registry settings according to the KB article, i am not getting the required behaviour. Only a warning is being logged when call time goes high (which is the default behaviour). i am running Windows Server 2003 with SP2. Is there any thing that i am missing? for example restart any COM+ runtime etc. Regards

  Having a MacBook Pro 13" I find myself trying to maximize the screen real estate constantly which have led me to put the dock at the right hand corner of the screen. Now in an attempt to save a few more pixels I decided to give autohiding of the dock a go and ran into a problem that have plagued me all night... When you toggle the switch to automatically hide the dock you get stuck with a small delay before it appears when hovering the edge of the screen. I have learnt that this is one of the many design principles Apple have put in use. In this case it appears to be their mission to save me from seeing the dock those few times when it's not intentional to touch the screens edge. In Windows there was a way to tweak this setting to have the menubar appear instantly by altering some registry value. Is there some way I can do this in Mac OS X?

• Permissions needed to read event log messages remotely?

  When running under a limited account, local event log messages are displaying fine, for remote computer I am getting this error: The description for Event ID ( xxxxx ) in Source ( yyyyy ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: zzzzz. Same remote computer works fine under domain administrator. I am currently experimenting with just the Event Viewer, by using Run As. Original issue is a PowerShell script which does Get-EventLog. Are there any special permissions that need to be in place to able to read event log messages remotely? Supposedly there is a simple solution in Windows 2008 and higher, i.e. just add user to Event Log Readers group. Is there anything like that for Windows 2003?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Can't remove Internet Explorer Add-On

  I'm using IE8 on Windows 7. I'm trying to delete an add-on from my "Manage Add-ons" panel. But when I double click the add-on I'd like to delete, the "Remove" button is grayed out. Only the disable option is available. I've gone to the path it points to and deleted that folder. I've also searched the registry to delete keys and went to Control Panel to uninstall the related installation package. Any ideas?

• How to find spyware dll launched using svchost.exe

  This weekend I found my PC was possibly infected by some virus or spyware. There is one "svchost.exe -k netsvcs" in my task manager, and it is running under my user name, rather than SYSTEM accounts. There is already another same process with same command line options under SYSTEM account. This user account svchost.exe consistently consumes 50% CPU (1 of 2 cores of my CPU). In Process Explorer, I can see it is started by explorer.exe, instead of services.exe. However, I failed to find its real service dll place in registry or disk. Does anyone know how to find this malicious program?

• Printer offline until spooler service is restarted multiple times

  When I try to print from my ThinkPad to a printer shared through a Windows 7 Homegroup hosted by a desktop computer, I often have to restart the Print Spooler service several times before the job will go through. In particular, this problem occurs when the desktop is in sleep mode when the print job is started and then brought out of sleep mode after the print job has been kicked off. Both computers are running Windows 7 32-bit edition with the latest patches. • USB connection issue

  Currently Im facing an issue when Im trying to connect any usb flash drive to my pc. ok, below is what happens to me: 1) I can connect usb keyboard and mouse without any issue. 2) however when i connect usb flash drive, there are 2 situations that are occuring randomly a) there is no usb drive mount in my computer, when device manager is checked, it shows error code 10, but is shown in disk management. b) my computer will have usb drive mounted, but when I click on it, it is empty. on right click the properties, the disk space show 0. (there are files within the usb) what i have done is: 1) run CCleaner to repair the registry, restart and try, but still not working. 2) uninstall the drive in device manager, restart and try, but still not working. 3) tried the port that connects mouse and keyboard, but does not work. anyone who experienced these problems before please guide me. any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.   Yesterday I found a corrupted file in my external usb drive. Since I am using the drive quite often (I am running my vms over there) I decided to run the chkdsk on it This is the result 488384000 KB of total space on disk. 351202364 KB in 1042390 file. 489920 KB in 81101 indexes. 16 KB in damaged sectors. 1204584 KB in use. 65536 KB used from the registry. 135487116 KB available on disk. therefore it has found 16KB of damaged sectors. Now the file is recovered Should I be worried about the HD and run chkdsk periodically from now on?

• Windows media player 12 not launching from custom program

  There is a program we use for testing that calls windows media player and plays a media file. The problem is that windows media player fails to load unless you open and close it before starting the program. After that the program will open it every time without a hitch but after a reboot it is lost and you must do it again. My question is what could be voilate setting could windows media player have that would be lost on a reboot? I have tried programs like Regshot to capture changes to the registry that might be delated on reboot. The code for the program is very straight forward simply calling windows media player with a parameter with the media to play. Using process montior I have determined that is is crashing shortly after the program executes it. I am at a lost on this problem as I can not find what if anything it is changing to run windows media player.

  I am getting this error on almost all of the operations on a Windows 7 pro 32 bit machine. By operations I mean anything I do. Update a repo from subversion. Access a local IIS Site. Copy a big folder. Run an installer.and sometime if I try again. It get solved. I think there is something wrong wit windows7 . I searched around and found posts suggesting to increase IRPStackSize value in registry I did that no Luck. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0 as my antivirus package Once this errors starts popping up. I have to restart and then in after some random time. It starts showing up again. Any help is appreciated. I am losing lot of my time in restarting my system or retrying again and again.

• "Computer Locked" dialog does not appear

  When I lock my computer, instead of seeing the "Computer Locked" dialog, I only see the "Unlock Computer" dialog with my user name populated and my password box has focus. I am not prompted to Ctrl+Alt+Del to first get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. This concerns, as nearly all of my other Windows XP machines do display the "Computer Locked" dialog and force a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence to get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. I cannot find a setting, registry or otherwise, that addresses this. I am running Windows XP Pro (version 2002) SP3

The question becomes: How can I force these changes to take effect so that users don't have to log off and then log back in to see the language bar. This has to be done automatically when users log in.

• How to update a keyboard layout DLL on Windows?

  Information about keyboard layout is stored in keyboard layout DLLs on Windows. One can make a custom layout using a tool like Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964665.aspx). It creates the dynamical library and also an installer which places the DLL at a right place and also puts necessary information to registry so the layout can be used. Now my question. How can one update his custom layout? One could uninstall the layout and install the new version which effectively replaces the DLL file. However this alone doesn't work because it seems that the old copy of the DLL stays loaded somewhere and is used when one sets the layout instead of loading new version. So is there a way how to tell the system that its “keyboard layout cache” is invalid? Of course I could reboot the whole system but I'd like to avoid it as it's annoying and seems to be poor design to reboot whole system just to reload a DLL.

  How do I disable the Windows Key+U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it*. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell.   Can a custom DPI setting be applied to Remote Desktop sessions? When you try to change the DPI from a Remote Desktop session, you get a message that display settings can't be changed from a remote session. That made me think that changing DPI from a console setting would work. It did, sort of. If I connected via Remote Desktop to an existing console session with a custom DPI setting, that setting would be applied to the Remote Desktop session. However, if I logged off that session, the custom DPI would not be applied to subsequent Remote Desktop sessions even though it was maintained for subsequent console sessions. It looks like the registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\AppliedDPI (and perhaps other values) is overwritten at logon, but I haven't been able figure out how to prevent it.

• Ok to edit task's xml file in c:\windows\system32\Tasks?

  I wrote a PowerShell script that check the executable in the < action tag for each task in the Task directory and mark the < enabled TRUEorFALSE< / enabled tag as false/true depending on the validity of the digital signature of the executable. After reading each task, the script re-saves the task file with the same name, type and location. Now my issue is that I get this message when I lunch task scheduler: “Task XYZ: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.” This message appears for all the tasks that were scanned and saved. Does editing task’s xml file directly corrupt the task? Is there any task decency that may cause this error(ex: registry value)?

  I am an advanced user, using Windows 7 with Avast! antivirus running. Today I started browsing and faced some weird popup. Upon investigation I found that "Relevant Knowledge" was running in my system. I was able to uninstall it using the Programs Manager and deleted the file's entries in the registry, but I am a little troubled due to the fact that Avast! was not able to detect it; and secondly, how it came into my system. Also, what further prevention measures should I take?
