• Domain Outlook user is asked for password every time despite checking the 'remember password' button

  We have a windows 2003 domain. All users have roaming profiles. We have a couple of users who, when they log into outlook, are asked for their password every time, despite selecting the 'remember my password' option. Our email is externally hosted exchange email. I've tried several fixes found on google such as deleting 'protect' folder in the user's profile, and deleting protect key in the registry but none work. I tried storing the password in windows' password/credentials manager, didn't work. It happens on any PC the users log into so it's not a machine specific problem. Any ideas? OS is Windows XP pro. Outlook is 2007.

• Installing Windows Mobile SDK without Visual Studio

  Is it possible to install the Windows Mobile SDK without having Visual Studio? I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? Is there a reason I need to pay for Microsoft's IDE, or is this just a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? Thanks,

• How Can I Disable CRL Checks For A Windows 2008 App Using WinHTTP?

  I've got a Windows 2008 server with an app that uses WinHTTP for SSL sessions. The server is isolated from the internet but still tries to connect to CRL distribution points, which leads to some timeouts. Since the server has no access to the internet whatsoever, I'd like to disable CRL checks. I had a similar issue on a Windows 2003 server and resolved it by adjusting the following registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Http/Parameters/SslBindiongInfo/0.0.0.0:443/DefaultSslCertCheckMode (DWORD=1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRootRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) That doesn't seem to be working in 2008. I've also tried disabling the CRL check from IE under Tools Internet Options Advanced. Is there anything else I can try here?

• In windows xp, how can I set the default browser from chrome to IE via Command Line, without admin privs

  Situation: 1. Need to Set the defualt browser to IE via cmd(problem) 2. Need to do a citrix login via IE(amounts to loading a url) beause it wont run in google chrome 3. then set default browser to chrome Environment: Windows XP, no admin priv's no admin priv's mean I can't touch registry Basic Steps I'm Doing: In a bat file: 1.Set default browser to IE 2.run a citrix SSO login via IE (not compatible with chrome) 3.Set default browser to Chrome 4.kill IE 5.live long and prosper So i have it all running except "Set default browser to IE" I can set the default browser to chome by using portable chrome's cmd line argument --make-default-browser but I can't undo that process. If I launch IE, it pops up that 'make ie default browser' window which stops the SSO process. So If I can disable that check via bat file, that would also work for me. • Windows calibration settings persistance over reboots

  I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a laptop (Samsung R560) using a cheap external CRT monitor. The screen is a littler dark for my liking, despite having the physical monitors settings up to the max for all the brightness-related settings. Windows 7 has a tool called "Calibrate display color" (search in the start menu). Running this tool, you have a slider that allows you to adjust the "Gamma", which sliding up gives me acceptable brightness levels. Unfortunately, upon reboot (and certain other activities such as running certain fullscreen games) this is reset to default. Is there a way to make this persistent? Some registry setting? Batch file to run at startup even (less preferable as I'd like games to run brighter too)?

• External HDD is always in use when trying to safely remove

  I have a WD 1TB Elements external hard drive and every time I use the Windows 7 "safely remove" feature, it gives me a dialog telling that a process is using the disk. Using Sysinternals Process Explorer and the answer on this question (find everything with the drive letter) I get the following result: What is the $Extend folder and why is it in use? How can I disable it? I cannot remove it using the command line (access denied). Edit: I've followed the instructions over here and under the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup I have a Multi-String Value named IgnoreNTFS with data \$Extend* /s But this does not make any difference. Also this question is not about a server. Additionally I can tell that I use a program called mkv2vob to convert video files with a Matroska container into something my PS3 will play. I convert the source files straight from my external HDD, but I would expect if this program does not release the lock on the HDD, surely it cannot be locked if the process isn't even running?

  I have a Group Policy in a domain that have lots of drive mapping settings. I would like to change the path for a lot of these servers in this gpo with powershell if possible. I know i could do this via the GPMC, but would prefer to do it programtically. I have looked at the grouppolicy powershell module from microsoft (get-gpo and friends) but i only seem to be able to change registry entrys and permissions on the policys, not the actual path for the drivemapping. any ideas? Error opening registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment' Error: could not find java.dll Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment. All i want to do with Google App Engine is to set up cron jobs with 1 minute frequency. I don't want to make any application in Google App Engine. I just want the cron job set up. • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

  I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • How can I shrink the Address toolbar in the Task Bar?

  I like being able to run commands straight from my Task Bar. So, I've enabled the Address toolbar on my new Windows 7 system - just like I had on my old XP system. However, the bar seems to have a mandatory minimum length that's a bit longer than I'd prefer. It's about twice as long, if memory serves, as the minimum size allowed in XP. Is there any way I can adjust this minimum length, through a Registry key or some other means? (Note: I've also got a related question, about removing the Refresh button at the end of the bar.) EDIT: For clarity, I'm adding a screenshot. The toolbar I want to shorten is the one circled below, with an empty text-entry field that has a drop-down and "Refresh" button. I currently have it positioned between a Quick Launch toolbar and the Taskbar. On the far side of the Taskbar, before the System Tray, is a Desktop toolbar.

• Synaptics/usb mouse drivers data is invalid on win server 2003

  Have just installed windows server 2003 image onto an HP laptop. Cannot get the mouse drivers to work. Have the correct drivers because I've extracted them out of a working PC (exact same model). I am always getting "Data is invalid". This is the synaptics touchpad drivers. Does anyone know how to fix this/ workaround to get mouse working? I have heard it may have something to do with permissions in the registry?

• Cannot Login to SBS 2008

  Hi All, I'm hoping someone has an answer for me... I installed a new Microsoft SBS 2008 server last week and everything appeared to be working normally. I went to reboot the server yesterday to finish the install for Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5 and upon reboot could no longer login to the server via either RDP or local console. The error message I get states that there are no logon servers available to service the logon request. I'm able to login to the server fine via Safe Mode with Networking but cannot login via a normal method. The server is currently at SP1. I attempted to install SP2 inside of safe mode after enabling the installation services via a registry edit but the install failed and rolled back after 2 or 3 hours. It appears that one of the services is not starting for some reason. I believe it's LSASS but can't actually login to see the active services during a normal boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  How can I determine who is logged on to a remote Windows XP computer from Linux? I do not have administrator access on the domain or on the remote computer. I can do it from a separate Windows computer using PsLoggedOn -L \\computer from PsTools I've tried using nmblookup -A remotecomputer, but I only see entries for the computer and the domain, not a <03> entry for the user. I've also tried running PsLoggedOn under wine; I get an error: Connecting to Registry of \\computer.company.com... fixme:reg:RegConnectRegistryW Connect to L"computer.company.com" is not supported. I started looking into winexe, but it looks like I would need administrative rights on the remote computer to get it working.

• Script to list current user's mapped network drives

  I have a Windows XP/ Server 2003 environment here users have mapped different network drives themselves using arbitrary drive letters. Some of these users do not know how to tell the true UNC path of these drives, and I would like to be able to run a script or program to query those drives and show me the drive letters and the corresponding UNC paths. I would like to see output like "net use" in that user's context so that I can see what drives THEY have mapped. I would need to do this using my own admin account, which is where the difficulty lies. I understand this information would be stored in the HKCU registry? I would love to be able to do this in Powershell, but a vbscript or even a standalone executable would do. Thanks.

  I'd like to see which modifier keys I've pressed during screen recordings so my students can understand what keys I've pressed while I click and drag. Is there any software that can do this? I'm aware that Windows 7 does this internally, if there's a way to enable it. Windows 7 When you have a Wacom tablet connected to your PC, or if you have a Tablet PC, windows shows little yellow tip bubbles whenever you press modifier keys. Any way to enable these on a normal PC? Update: I've tried starting the Tablet PC Input Service but nothing happens. The Tablet PC Settings dialog has nothing interesting either. Is there a registry setting I can tweak?

• MS SQL 2000 and SSL Certificate

  I'm trying to set up a MS SQL 2000 server to use an already existing SSL certificate installed on the server. I verified that the certificate shows up in the Personal/Certificate folder of the account that is running the MSSQLSERVER service using the Certificate MMC snap-in. I also verified that the certificate for the CA is installed under the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities. Additionally, to make sure that it is using this specific certificate I created a Certificate registry value of type REG_BINARY in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib and I set it to the certificates thumbprint like it mentions in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276553 Finally, I opened up the Server Network Utility, checked Force protocol encryption, clicked OK, and restarted the MSSQLSERVER service. Unfortunately, it fails to start and looking at the event log it's failing with: 19015: Encryption requested but no valid certificate was found. SQL Server terminating. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Where did I go wrong?

  Back in school, I used to have a .login file along the lines of alias ll = ls -l alias dir = ls -Fhl alias web = cd ~/public/public_www/development ... I'd like to do that sort of thing with my XP box here at work, but most of the resources I've found online seem fairly complicated and heavy-duty. Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve mucking about in the registry or running a large batch file? EDIT: My original reason for asking this was that I only need the command line for one command in one specific folder, and I wanted to be able to get to that folder quickly when I launched the command line. But the accepted answer for this question is so good that I decided to ask about my original issue as a separate question here.

  I am getting the following problem on a number of windows 2008 servers. 0x80041323 Task Scheduler failed to start task \Reporting" in TaskEngine "S-1-5-18:NT AUTHORITY\System:Service:" for user "NT AUTHORITY\System". User Action: Reduce the number of tasks running in the specified user context. I've done lots of research around the web but have been unable to come up with a working answer. I have found some information suggesting increasing a value in the registry key "TasksInMemoryQueue" which I have done, but even setting this as high as 500 has not helped. I have rebooted the server after setting this value. The server does run a high volume of Scheduled tasks, there could be 150 or so running at any one time, but certainly not 500. The scheduled tasks are all running under the system user. Does anyone have any ideas?

  I have the exactly same problem as here: Windows XP TCP/IP No buffer space available On Windows XP Pro, SP3 if one does an experiment where one tries to open TCP/IP sockets in a loop (bascially, listen port 7000, listen port 7001, etc.) After approx 649 open sockets, one will start getting errors: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?) I've tried to edit the registry as described here http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-tcpip-max-limit.html I set MaxUserPort = 65534 and MaxFreeTcbs = 2000, but it didn't help. What else can I do? I need 1000 server sockets.   I am getting this error on almost all of the operations on a Windows 7 pro 32 bit machine. By operations I mean anything I do. Update a repo from subversion. Access a local IIS Site. Copy a big folder. Run an installer.and sometime if I try again. It get solved. I think there is something wrong wit windows7 . I searched around and found posts suggesting to increase IRPStackSize value in registry I did that no Luck. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0 as my antivirus package Once this errors starts popping up. I have to restart and then in after some random time. It starts showing up again. Any help is appreciated. I am losing lot of my time in restarting my system or retrying again and again.

  This is a Canonical Question about DNS (Domain Name Service). If my understanding of the DNS system is correct, the .com registry holds a table that maps domains (www.example.com) to DNS servers. What is the advantage? Why not map directly to an IP address? If the only record that needs to change when I am configuring a DNS server to point to a different IP address, is located at the DNS server, why isn't the process instant? If the only reason for the delay are DNS caches, is it possible to bypass them, so I can see what is happening in real time?

• Accept incoming L2TP connections on Windows 7

  Windows 2003 can be configured as a VPN server that uses L2TP with a preshared key. Windows 7 can be configured to accept incoming VPN connections, presumably using PPTP. Is there a way to configure Windows 7 to accept incoming L2TP connections? The configuration settings for incoming connections is extremely sparse; I don't see any place to enter a preshared key or specify the protocol to use. Perhaps it is beyond the capabilities of Win 7, but I hold out hope that I'm overlooking some Group Policy settings or registry edits that allow it.
