• What is the best database design for managing historical information? [closed]

  Say you have a Person table with columns such as: ID, FirstName, LastName, BirthCountry, ...etc. And you want to keep track of changes on such a table. For example, the user may want to see previous names of a person or previous addresses, etc. The normalized way is to keep names in separate table, addresses in a separate table,...etc. and the main person table will contain only the information that you are not interested in monitoring changes for (such information will be updated in place). The problem I see here, aside form the coding hassle due to the extensive number of joins required in a real-life situation, is that I have never seen this type of design in any real application (maybe because most did not provide this feature!). So, is there a better way to design this? Thanks.

• Find directories that DON'T contain a file

  Yes, I'm sorting out my music. I've got everything arranged beautifully in the following mantra: /Artist/Album/Track - Artist - Title.ext and if one exists, the cover sits in /Artist/Album/cover.(jpg|png). I want to scan through all the second-level directories and find the ones that don't have a cover. By second level, I mean I don't care if /Britney Spears/ doesn't have a cover.jpg, but I would care if /Britney Spears/In The Zone/ didn't have one. Don't worry about the cover-downloading (that's a fun project for me tomorrow) I only care about the glorious bash-fuiness about an inverse-ish find example.

• Tracking a goal through a virtual pageview is not registering

  I am trying to track a goal in Google Analytics through a virtual pageview. As you can see in the code example, it is linking out from a picture instead of text with a link. I triple-checked to see if I had my Goals set up properly in the Admin panel, where the goal URL is set to "/click2", the goal type is URL destination and the match type is Head Match. I am unsure if the problem lies in the fact that it's linking out to an "https" link or if the link is attached to a picture that serves as a Call To Action. I would appreciate if any of you can help shed some light on this problem I'm having.

• How to use unused space in ubuntu

  I installed ubuntu on my machine with only 80 GB of memory anticipating that I will remove it later but now I want to keep it forever (until I am frustrated with linux). I have 500 GB in my machine and now I want to use that raw 420 GB of space. How I can I do that ? with "space/memory" I am referring to secondary memory not Ram.   In reading Alan Kay's question on Significant new inventions I was coming up with answers that were not new ideas but old ones that have been passed by in the main stream. So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• Problem with WindowsXp on VirtualBox in 12.10

  When I try to start it I get: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXp. The virtual machine 'WindowsXp' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} and in another dialog: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. • Why does Google Analytics log a user logging in as an exit?

  I have custom event tracking set up in Google Analytics that tracks when a visitor registers on the site. The tracking is working fine. However, GA is showing that 100% of users "exit" the site after registering. They aren't exiting however, they are just getting logged in. Is there some reason why a user creating a session by logging in would cause GA to lose track of the visitor and think a new user had arrived? Is there any way to prevent this?

In order to be really useful, such application should have: -basic CRM functionality to track who is providing the ads -multilingual multi country support: have the ability to specify for the same ad, different versions for multiple languages/countries -predefined ad formats (google Ads, flash ads...) and sizes with corresponding PHP helpers so as to insert in the HTML code the necessary markup to properly integrate the ad. Ideally if that application could be desgined for Zend Framework that would be awesome (but I think I'm dreaming at this point).

• Rendering only a part of the screen in high detail

  If graphics are rendered for a large viewing angle (e.g. a very large TV or a VR headset), the viewer can't actually focus on the entire image, just a part of it. (Actually, this is the case for regular sized screens as well.) Combined with a way to track the viewer's eyes, you could theoretically exploit this and render the graphics away from the viewer's focus with progressively less details and resolution, gaining performance, without losing perceived quality. Are there any techniques for this available or under development today?

• Can various browsers be assumed to maintain predictible state accurately in multiplayer online gaming?

  With many games it is said that server will assume that clients keep track of the world accurately. Assuming this is true, for a browser based multiplier space invaders game you would only tell the client when new bullets or the players ship moves and everything that behaves in a predetermined manner in the js client. It would be expected that positions would be the same in the browsers. Do you think you could trust browsers to do this? I feel that timings could differ between rendering loops and cause positions to get out of sync and might just get the server to maintain all the positions to make sure.

• Splitting Logic, Data, Layout and "Hacks"

  Sure, we all heard of programming patterns such as MVVM, MVC and such. But that isn't really what I'm looking into as Layout, Data and Logic is already pretty much split up (XML-Layout markup, Database, insert your language of choice here). The platform I am developing for is hard to maintain over the updated versions and older OSes. The project significantly grew up over the last few months and dealing with different platform versions really is a pain. For example simply disabling an user interface control for all existing versions took me around 40 lines of code in the logic layer, wrangling around with invocation, delegation, singletons that provide UI handling and so on. Is there a clean way to keep track of those "hacks" by maybe excluding it into separate classes or even packages? Should I overwrite existing framework code in order to handle my requirements correctly? If so, does that concept have a name?

• What library should I use for 2D Geometry? [closed]

  I've been working on a 2D game in java, but found that java just didn't cut it for me and had forced me to a lot of bad design choices, so I've decided to port all my work to c++. The main reason I've decided change to c++ is that i had reached a point where i had 3 geometry libraries (the native, one from the game engine and one to handle "complex" polygons), none of witch worked very well together and i couldn't keep track of them. I'm new to c++, but i know all the basics. My question is, what would be a good geometry library to use, ideally it should be able to handle integer and decimal data types, have point, line, and polygon classes witch are able to check for intersection and contains. • Code maintenance: To add comments in code or to just leave it to the version control?

  We have been asked to add comments with start tags, end tags, description, solution etc for each change that we make to the code as part of fixing a bug / implementing a CR. My concern is, does this provide any added value? As it is, we have all the details in the Version control history, which will help us to track each and every change? But my leads are insisting on having the comments as a "good" programming practice. One of their argument is when a CR has to be de-scoped/changed, it would be cumbersome if comments are not there. Considering that the changes would be largely in between code, would it really help to add comments for each and every change we make? Shouldn't we leave it to the version control?

At the moment I track these in a google doc, but ideally like a system where I can browse the teams objectives, add a team objective and it automatically appear on members personal objectives. • How can I personalize my MacBook Pro Touchpad?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a MacBook Pro 5.5. I'm just wondering if there is something that takes all the kinks out of the touch-pad. It works good, but it feels sluggish, double tap works about 75% of the time and sometimes while I it somehow selects something on a different page (although I'm not sure if that has to deal with the touch-pad and not weird laptop bugs for a new LTS) If there are any programs, apps, commands aside from the built in system preferences mouse and track-pad touch-pad menu that allow someone to "optimize" touch-pad potential.

• Analysing traffic sources in Analytics for Magento sales

  Hi I have a Magento installation linked with a Google Analytics account. It works very well in that I can see conversions, I can see the products that are selling directly from analytics and I can get an overview of traffic sources for those sales. What I can't work out how to track/see is what keywords are being used by the customers that are completing sales. Can anybody let me know how this data can be gathered or if it's even possible? (is this possibly a privacy issue?)

  I'm prototyping a simple browser-based game. It's played from a top down perspective on a 2d canvas. You left-click on a point on the map, and your character will begin walking to it. If you click on a different point on the map, then your character will begin walking to the new point. Track current coords and target coords If target coords are exactly up, left, right, or down, then increment appropriate direction until you get there Implied else: target coords are in a quadrant. To make this movement look natural, character will have to move diagonally. For example, pretend the target is to the northeast. For each game frame, alternate incrementing current coordinates in the north and then east directions.

  Hey all, I know there's been questions about this before, but mine is a little more specific. I work for a high traffic website and we want to start tracking our visitors better. Unfortunately, Google Analytics is not an option at the moment, so what I'm looking for is some alternatives, preferrably server-side (but not necessarily). We're currently running Urchin, but what I'm missing most there is the way you can set conversions in Analytics and then track (for example) which keywords convert better or which landing pages convert better. Also, A/B testing is something I really miss. Which analytics tools can be compared to analytics in terms of advanced segmentation, navigation summaries, A/B testing, etc?

• Character coding / programming

  Lately I tryed a few times to create characters for some games, but at some certain point (especially when collision detection came in) everything became messy and the interaction between chars, the world and certain items had a lot of bugs. So here is my question, how do you ussualy keep track of actions that your character is allowed to do, or more in general do you have some links / advices how to set up a char efficiantly? I´m working on a char right now, who should at least be able to run, jump, pick items up and use different fighting animations. Most ideas I came up with until now use some kind of action.priority / action.duration system to determain whats possible and what not, or a "action-manager" which defines for every action what is possible from that action on but it all doesnt work that well together.
