• Win7 x64 unresponsive for a minute or so. HD failing?

  On a fully updated Win7 x64, every so often the system stalls for a minute or so. This has been going on for a couple months now. By stalling I mean the mouse responds and I can move windows around, but any window, any program, that is open becomes whiteish when I select it AND any new programs will not open. It doesn't matter what kind of program it is. When the stall stops all clicks I made (open new programs for example) take effect. Nothing shows up consistently (as in every time this happens) in the event log. Today though I was able to find something, but it doesn't reveal much other than the "system was unresponsive". It's a 7009 for "A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect." It doesn't matter if I have any USB devices plug-in or not. I've ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. While the machine is unresponsive, I've noticed that Drive D (the other partition on the single internal HD in this laptop) is displayed like this in explorer. This never occurs with Drive C or any other drive on the machine. . SMART report for the physical drive: Read benchmark by HD Tune 5 Pro, probably the most telling piece of the puzzle. Isn't this alone enough to see there is a problem with the drive, regardless of whether the unresponsiveness is caused by such purported problem? Do I have a defective drive? Seagate Tools diag says there is nothing wrong with the drive... UPDATE: I noticed that the windows error reporting service entered the running state then the stopped state and the space between the two events was exactly 2 minutes. Which error it was trying to report I don't know. I check the "Reliability Monitor" and it shows no errors to be reported. I've disabled the windows error reporting service to see if the problem stops.

• How to call an ASP.NET WebMethod using PowerShell?

  It seems like ASP.NET WebMethods are not "web servicey" enough to work with New-WebServiceProxy. Or maybe it is, and I haven't figured out how to initialize it? So instead, I tried doing it manually, like so: $wc = new-object System.Net.WebClient $wc.Credentials = [System.Net.CredentialCache]::DefaultCredentials $url = "http://www.domenicdenicola.com/AboutMe/SleepLog/default.aspx/GetSpans" $postData = "{`"starting`":`"\/Date(1254121200000)\/`",`"ending`":`"\/Date(1270018800000)\/`"}" $result = $wc.UploadString($url, $postData) But this gives me "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error." So I must be doing something slightly wrong. Any ideas on how to call my PageMethod from PowerShell, and not get an error?

There are of course dozens of examples of using virtual users with Dovecot, but all the ones we have found either refer to Dovecot 1.x (we are using 2.x), using only virtual users (we must use real AND virtual users) or want to use a MySQL db, we need to use a text file. Some hints about where we are going wrong would be very much appreciated.

• New asp "showat" attribute required inconsistently in VS2010. Why?

  When I generate code using T4 templates in Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error for each of my asp controls when I try to compile: Control "ddState" is missing required attribute "showat". I have never gotten this error in previous versions of .NET. Further, I don't get this error when I manually construct my pages either by dragging/dropping, nor do I get it when I type out the control text myself. When I generate code, I have to manually add showat="client" to my tag for the compiler to be happy. It was my understanding that I never had to explicitly specify this tag. The following: <asp:dropdownlist id="ddState" runat="server" showat="client" /> solves the problem. Why do I have to add this to generated code but not other times? (It's a VS-2010 webforms project, using VB, in case that makes a difference.)

  When I Press F5 on my VS2005 to debug the application, it launches the web app window but it is coming out of debug mode. When I tried to trace the Error in the EventViewer, this was the error: Failed in Token.vb(GetToken). The token was not in memory and the identity of the authenticated IIS caller was not permitted. The session may have unexpectedly terminated. The specific error message included: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. • Server 2003 SP2 BSOD caused by fltmgr.sys

  I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes? The following is the error code I'm seeing: Error code 0000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f723e087, parameter3 f78cea8c, parameter4 f78ce788.   Recently, i have upgraded my iPhone SDK OS from version 2.2.1 to 3.0 version. After that while building my application i get an error the the provisioning profile has expired. So i created a new provisioning profile. Then i made the distribution of my application with the provisioning profile. But i get an error in iTunes while syncing my application into iPhone device. The error message is "The application"iGVA " was not installed on the iPhone because the entitlements are not valid." I checked the code signing Entitlements that contains the correct entitlement plist file. Please suggest me to solve it out. Any help would be appreciated ! Sathiya

• Did I find a bug in PHP's `crypt()`?

  I think I may have found a bug in PHP's crypt() function under Windows. However: I recognize that it's probably my fault. PHP is used by millions and worked on by thousands; my code is used by tens and worked on by me. (This argument is best explained on Coding Horror.) So I'm asking for help: show me my fault. I've been trying to find it for a few days now, with no luck. The setup I'm using a Windows server installation with Apache 2.2.14 (Win32) and PHP 5.3.2. My development box runs Windows XP Professional; the 'production' server (this is an intranet setup) runs Windows Storage Server 2003. The problem happens on both. I don't see anything in php.ini related to crypt(), but will happily answer questions about my config. The problem Several scripts in my PHP app occasionally hang: the page sits there on 'waiting for localhost' and never finishes. Each of these scripts uses crypt to hash a user's password before storing it in the database, or, in the case of the login page, to hash the entered password before comparing it to the version stored in the database. Since the login page is the simplest, I focused on it for testing. I repeatedly logged in, and found that it would hang maybe 4 out of 10 times. As an experiment, I changed the login page to use the plain text password and changed my password in the database to its plain text version. The page stopped hanging. I saw that PHP's latest version lists this bugfix: Fixed bug #51059 (crypt crashes when invalid salt are [sic] given). So I created a very simple test script, as follows, using the same salt given in an official example: $foo = crypt('rasmuslerdorf','r1'); echo $foo; This page, too, will hang, if I reload it like crazy. I only see it hanging in Chrome, but regardless of browser, the effect on Apache is the same. Effect on Apache When these pages hang, Apache's server-status page (which I explained here, regarding a different problem) increments the number of requests being processed and decrements the number of idle workers. The requests being processed almost all have a status of 'Sending Reply,' though sometimes for a moment they will show either 'Reading request' or 'keepalive (read).' Eventually, Apache may crash. When it does, the Windows crash report looks like this: szAppName: httpd.exe szAppVer: 2.2.14.0 szModName: php5ts.dll szModVer: 5.3.1.0 // OK, this report was before I upgraded to PHP 5.3.2, // but that didn't fix it offset: 00a2615 Is it my fault? I'm tempted to file a bug report to PHP on this. The argument against it is, as stated above, that bugs are nearly always my fault. However, my argument in favor of 'it's PHP's fault' is: I'm using Windows, whereas most servers use Linux (I don't get to choose this), so the chances are greater that I've found an edge case There was recently a bug with crypt(), so maybe it still has issues I have made the simplest test case I can, and I still have the problem Can anyone duplicate this?   Okay, I realize there are many questions relating to this error, I have read several questions and answers without resolving my problem. I have a MVC site that I'm trying to debug on local IIS web server. I check the option to use local IIS in the project properties and I've created a virtual directory in IIS. The error I get in Visual Studio is: Unable to start debugging on web server. In IIS i try browse the site but get the error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions Config File \?\C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\MvcApplication1\MvcApplication1\web.config I've set permissions for the pool identity on the web.config and whole project folder. I've tried localsystem identity, no luck! Please help me resolve this. I've spent several hours trying to fix this.

• phpMyAdmin causes php-fpm worker to restart (502 Bad Gateway)

  I am trying to set up a test site for myself. Everything works fine except phpMyAdmin. php installation loads my test site scripts, they work fine, however trying to load phpMyAdmin i get 502 Bad Gateway error. Judging from logs (that are not too helpful) it seems that php-fpm worker is crashing each time phpmyadmin is being accessed. No clue how or why.. • FreeLibrary vs implicit unloading DLL

I made a sample program which loads the library using LoadLibrary() function, uses the library function and finally call FreeLibrary() and return. When i executed this program, i didnt get any error message. But if i remove FreeLibrary(), in that case the DLL_PROCESS_DETACH case is executed implicitly and this time it gives error dialog box mentioning that there is access violation. Why calling FreeLibrary() suppress this error? OR internally it handles this exception? What is suggested way.

  If both source and destination are remote, rsync complains: The source and destination cannot both be remote. rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(1156) [Receiver=3.0.7] Is there a insurmountable technical obstacle to making rsync do this? Or it's simply a case of it's-not-yet-implemented? It seems relatively easy to create a local buffer in memory that mediates the transfer between two remotes, holding both hashes and data. Conversely, is there other (unix) software that implements this functionality?
