• How do I disable the network connection from .Net without needing admin priveledges?

  I may be SOL on this but I thought I would give throw it out for possible solutions. I am writing a computer access control service to help me control my kids' computer use. Plan on open sourcing it when I have it working. It is written in VB.Net and needs to work on XP through 7. I am running into all sorts of security and desktop access issues on Windows 7. The service needs to run as admin to execute the NetSh command to disable the network. But I cannot interact with the desktop from the service so I IPC to a UI to handle other stuff, but I still cannot detect from the service if the desktop is locked. Argghh! I could get it all working from a hidden windows form app if I could just lick the one piece that needs admin permissions: disabling the network. It does no good if a kid logs on and denies the popup asking if the program should run as administrator and he says no. Also windows 7 will not start a program set to run as admin using HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Anyone know how to get this working? Or have an outside the box solution? Thanks! Brad

• Oracle syntax - should we have to choose between the old and the new?

  Hi, I work on a code base in the region of about 1'000'000 lines of source, in a team of around eight developers. Our code is basically an application using an Oracle database, but the code has evolved over time (we have plenty of source code from the mid nineties in there!). A dispute has arisen amongst the team over the syntax that we are using for querying the Oracle database. At the moment, the overwhelming majority of our queries use the "old" Oracle Syntax for joins, meaning we have code that looks like this... Example of Inner Join select customers.*, orders.date, orders.value from customers, orders where customers.custid = orders.custid Example of Outer Join select customers.custid, contacts.ContactName, contacts.ContactTelNo from customers, contacts where customers.custid = contacts.custid(+) As new developers have joined the team, we have noticed that some of them seem to prefer using SQL-92 queries, like this: Example of Inner Join select customers.*, orders.date, orders.value from customers inner join orders on (customers.custid = orders.custid) Example of Outer Join select customers.custid, contacts.ContactName, contacts.ContactTelNo from customers left join contacts on (customers.custid = contacts.custid) Group A say that everyone should be using the the "old" syntax - we have lots of code in this format, and we ought to value consistency. We don't have time to go all the way through the code now rewriting database queries, and it wouldn't pay us if we had. They also point out that "this is the way we've always done it, and we're comfortable with it..." Group B however say that they agree that we don't have the time to go back and change existing queries, we really ought to be adopting the "new" syntax on code that we write from here on in. They say that developers only really look at a single query at a time, and that so long as developers know both syntax there is nothing to be gained from rigidly sticking to the old syntax, which might be deprecated at some point in the future. Without declaring with which group my loyalties lie, I am interested in hearing the opinions of impartial observers - so let the games commence! Martin. Ps. • MS Access 2003 - Save button enabling on form open on different tabs

  I have a tab control on a form, and a couple different tabs have save buttons on them. Is that why I get this error? I cannot enable or disable a control when the tab is not showing?

• Better way to call superclass method in ExtJS

  All the ExtJS documentation and examples I have read suggest calling superclass methods like this: MyApp.MyPanel = Ext.extend(Ext.Panel, { initComponent: function() { // do something MyPanel specific here... MyApp.MyPanel.superclass.initComponent.call(this); } }); I have been using this pattern for quite some time and the main problem is, that when you rename your class then you also have to change all the calls to superclass methods. That's quite inconvenient, often I will forget and then I have to track down strange errors. But reading the source of Ext.extend() I discovered, that instead I could use the superclass() or super() methods that Ext.extend() adds to the prototype: MyApp.MyPanel = Ext.extend(Ext.Panel, { initComponent: function() { // do something MyPanel specific here... this.superclass().initComponent.call(this); } }); In this code renaming MyPanel to something else is simple - I just have to change the one line. But I have doubts... I haven't seen this documented anywhere and the old wisdom says, I shouldn't rely on undocumented behaviour. I didn't found a single use of these superclass() and supr() methods in ExtJS source code. Why create them when you aren't going to use them? Maybe these methods were used in some older version of ExtJS but are deprecated now? But it seems such a useful feature, why would you deprecate it? So, should I use these methods or not?

• Convert Form to UserControl

  I have a 3rd party code library that I'm using; part of this library is a winforms application for editing the configuration files used by this library. I would like to embed their configuration editor app into my application. I have the source code to their library and the configuration editor is (as far as I can tell) a straight forward Winforms app using standard controls. I'm trying to convert the app's main form into a UserControl so that I can host it inside my application which is WPF (WPF's WindowsFormsHost won't host a Form object, I get an exception). I changed the form object to inherit from UserControl instead of Form and fixed all the compiler errors (there weren't many, just property initializations that don't exist on UserControls) but what's happening is my newly converted control is just blank. When I run my test app I don't see any of the controls that make up the original form, just a blank page. Any ideas? I really don't want to have to re-implement their app from scratch, that would suck. Edit: I forgot to mention I'm testing this in a WinForms application, not WPF, to just get the control working before trying to use it from WPF.

• How to implement menuitems that depend on current selection in WPF MVVM explorer-like application

  I am new to WPF and MVVM, and I am working on an application utilizing both. The application is similar to windows explorer, so consider an app with a main window with menu (ShellViewModel), a tree control (TreeViewModel), and a list control (ListViewModel). I want to implement menu items such as Edit - Delete, which deletes the currently selected item (which may be in the tree or in the list). I am using Josh Smith's RelayCommand, and binding the menuitem to a DeleteItemCommand in the ShellViewModel is easy. It seems like implementing the DeleteItemCommand, however, requires some fairly tight coupling between the ShellViewModel and the two child view models (TreeViewModel and ListViewModel) to keep track of the focus/selection and direct the action to the proper child for implementation. That seems wrong to me, and makes me think I'm missing something. Writing a focus manager and/or selection manager to do the bookkeeping does not seem too hard, and could be done without coupling the classes together. The windowing system is already keeping track of which view has the focus, and it seems like I'd be duplicating code. What I'm not sure about is how I would route the command from the ShellViewModel down to either the ListViewModel or the TreeViewModel to do the actual work without making a mess of the code. Some day, the application will be extended to include more than two children, and I want the shell to be as ignorant of the children as possible to make that extension as painless as possible. Looking at some sample WPF/MVVM applications (Karl Shifflett's CipherText, Josh Smith's MVVM Demo, etc.), I haven't seen any code that does this (or I didn't understand it). Regardless of whether you think my approach is way off base or I'm just missing a small nuance, please share your thoughts and help me get back on track. Thanks!

• Django internationalization for admin pages - translate model name and attributes

  Django's internationalization is very nice (gettext based, LocaleMiddleware), but what is the proper way to translate the model name and the attributes for admin pages? I did not find anything about this in the documentation: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/i18n/internationalization/ http://www.djangobook.com/en/2.0/chapter19/ I would like to have "???????? ????? ??? ?????????" instead of "???????? order ??? ?????????". Note, the 'order' is not translated. First, I defined a model, activated USE_I18N = True in settings.py, run django-admin makemessages -l ru. No entries are created by default for model names and attributes. Grepping in the Django source code I found: $ ack "Select %s to change" contrib/admin/views/main.py 70: self.title = (self.is_popup and ugettext('Select %s') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name) or ugettext('Select %s to change') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name)) So the verbose_name meta property seems to play some role here. Tried to use it: class Order(models.Model): subject = models.CharField(max_length=150) description = models.TextField() class Meta: verbose_name = _('order') Now the updated po file contains msgid 'order' that can be translated. So I put the translation in. Unfortunately running the admin pages show the same mix of "???????? order ??? ?????????". I'm currently using Django 1.1.1. Could somebody point me to the relevant documentation? Because google can not. ;-) In the mean time I'll dig deeper into the django source code...

• How do display a UserControl with satisfying all imports

  Dear SO, I'm having some issues with Silverlight 4/ MEF. I have a basic framework setup with a Silverlight Navigation app at the core. Image link to the diagram for clarification The main app (Desu) contains some pages and controls that export en import nicely. I dynamicly load controls from Desu.Controls(like an imageviewer which i identify with the IImageViewer interface) and some pages from Desu.Pages. The first problem I had was with dynamicly loading pages and being able to navigate to these pages (eg. use dummyhttp://blagh/desutestpage.aspx#/Activation when Desu.Pages was loaded from the xap). I solved this by using a custom MetaAttribute and a custom contentloader. Now for the question part: I want to load the ImageViewerControl from Desu.Controls in HomePage in Desu. I haven't loaded the Desu.Controls into the package though. When i try to load the control it gives me CompositionException because it can't satisfy the ImageViewControl import. I tried setting AllowRecomposition=true but that didn't help. So is it possible to load a control without satisfying all imports and, if yes, how does one do this?

• 2 Mutually exclusive RadioButton "Lists"

  I think this has to be THE most frustrating thing I've ever done in web forms. Yet one would think it would be the easiest of all things in the world to do. That is this: I need 2 separate lists of radiobuttons on my .aspx page. One set allows a customer to select an option. The other set does also but for a different purpose. But only one set can have a selected radiobutton. Ok I've tried this using 2 asp.net Radiobuttonlists controls on the same page. Got around the nasty bug with GroupName (asp.net assigns the control's uniqueID which prevents the groupname from ever working because now, 2 radiobuttonlists can't have the same groupname for all their radiobuttons because each radiobuttonlist has a different uniqueID thus the bug assigns the unique ID as the name attribute when the buttons are rendered. since the name sets are different, they are not mutually exclusive). Anyway, so I created that custom RadioButtonListcontrol and fixed that groupname problem. But when ended up happening is when I went to put 2 instances of my new custom radiobuttonlist control on my .aspx page, all was swell until I noticed that every time I checked for radiobuttonlist1.SelectedValue or radiobuttonlist2.SelectedValue (did not matter which I was checking) the value always spit back string.empty and i was not able to figure out why (see http://forums.asp.net/t/1401117.aspx). Ok onto the third try tonight and into the break of dawn (no sleep). I tried to instead just scrap trying to use 2 custom radiobuttonlists altogether because of that string.empty issue and try to spit out 2 sets of radiobuttonlists via using 2 asp.net repeaters and a standard input HTML tag inside. Got that working. Ok but the 2 lists still are not mutually exclusive. I can select a value in the first set of radiobuttons from repeater1 and same goes for repeater2. I cannot for the life of me get the "sets" to be mutually exclusive sets of radiobuttons.

Now as long as I bind to the CollectionViewSource the designtime data does not show up in blend 3. When I bind to the ViewModel collection directly <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Modules}" I can see the designtime data. Any idea what I could do?

• CF - How to get mouse position when ContextMenu pops up ??

  I have a problem i cannot solve. In my view (that shows a map) i created a contextMenu. When context menu is invoked i need to get the position where the user has clicked on the map. Here is my problem: In the view i already have onMouseDown event that gets me the coordinates where the user clicked. private void MapView_MouseDown(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { this.lastMouseDownX = e.X; this.lastMouseDownY = e.Y; } When the contextMenu is invoked i need the same data, but the problem is that contextMenu only has EventArgs that dont keep the data i need. Furthermore ... contextMenu is invoked when user presses and holds mouse for a second and when its invoked the code does not enter onMouseDown event ! It just goes into popup event on my context menu.... I tried putting this in my popup event, but the coordinates are not ok. • XSLT fails to load huge XML doc after matching certain elements

  I'm trying to match certain elements using XSLT. The PHP code is as follows: if ($xml->loadXML($source_xml) == false) { die('Failed to load source XML: ' . $http_file); } It then fails to perform loadXML and immediately dies. I think there are two options now. 1) I should set a maximum executing time. Frankly, I don't know how that I do this for the built-in PHP 5 XSLT processor. 2) Think about another way to match. • How to terminate a particular Azure worker role instance

  Background I am trying to work out the best structure for an Azure application. Each of my worker roles will spin up multiple long-running jobs. Over time I can transfer jobs from one instance to another by switching them to a readonly mode on the source instance, spinning them up on the target instance, and then spinning the original down on the source instance. If I have too many jobs then I can tell Azure to spin up extra role instance, and use them for new jobs. Conversely if my load drops (e.g. during the night) then I can consolidate outstanding jobs to a few machines and tell Azure to give me fewer instances. The trouble is that (as I understand it) Azure provides no mechanism to allow me to decide which instance to stop. Thus I cannot know which servers to consolidate onto, and some of my jobs will die when their instance stops, causing delays for users while I restart those jobs on surviving instances. Idea 1: I decide which instance to stop, and return from its Run(). I then tell Azure to reduce my instance count by one, and hope it concludes that the broken instance is a good candidate. Has anyone tried anything like this? Idea 2: I predefine a whole bunch of different worker roles, with identical contents. I can individually stop and start them by switching their instance count from zero to one, and back again. I think this idea would work, but I don't like it because it seems to go against the natural Azure way of doing things, and because it involves me in a lot of extra bookkeeping to manage the extra worker roles. Idea 3: Live with it. Any better ideas?

  I have this method that receives an ID number and downloads an HTML website according to that ID. Typically, an IMDB link is like this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892791/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226229/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0000429/ They all follow the 'tt' then 7 digits, with lack of digits turning into zeroes to fill out the left spaces. How can I accomplish this using C#? I'm kind of stumped. • WPF validation red border doesn't show If UserControl collapsed first

  There seems to be a bug with WPF in 3.5, and I was hoping someone may have found a workaround. Basically if you have a custom UserControl that contains a TextBox and it is in a Window but initialized to be Collapsed by default in the xaml or code behind if it fails validation when you make the control visible it will not show the red border until it fails while visible. However, this works correctly when visibility is set to Hidden, just no when Collapsed. I am already overriding the ErrorTemplate with a style to workaround the Adornment issue with the red border staying visibile when you collapse the control. Below is my full style for the TextBox. • Issue in creating Zip file using glob.glob

  Hi, I am creating a Zip file from a folder (and subfolders). it works fine and creates a new .zip file also but I am having an issue while using glob.glob. It is reading all files from the desired folder (source folder) and writing to the new zip file but the problem is that it is, however, adding subdirectories, but not adding files form the subdirectories. I am giving user an option to select the filename and path as well as filetype also (Zip or Tar). I don;t get any problem while creating .tar.gz file, but when use creates .zip file, this problem comes across. Here is my code: for name in (Source_Dir): for name in glob.glob("/path/to/source/dir/*" ): myZip.write(name, os.path.basename(name), zipfile.ZIP_DEFLATED) myZip.close() Also, if I use code below: for dirpath, dirnames, filenames in os.walk(Source_Dir): myZip.write(os.path.join(dirpath, filename) os.path.basename(filename)) myZip.close() Now the 2nd code taks all files even if it inside the folder/ subfolders, creates a new .zip file and write to it without any directory strucure. It even does not take dir structure for main folder and simply write all files from main dir or subdir to that .zip file. Can anyone please help me or suggest me.   Hi there, yet another question for recommendations for a book on Silverlight. I look for a book that covers the UI and styling and, if possible, custom drawing and graphics. Very important for me is the style of the book - it should focus on the actual programming and not on where to click in Visual Studio to get things done. Let's take a fictional example for proper usage of the DataGrid control: Bad: To use the data grid, drag it from the toolbox onto the control. You can change the background color by clicking on “Background” in the properties. To define custom columns, click on columns and edit them in the configuration window that opens. Good: To use the DataGrid, you need a reference to the blah dll and declare the namespace in the XAML like this (blah), the data model should be like blah and if you want to define how the columns look like, you need to define them like this (more blah).   I need to take some data from one table (and expand some XML on the way) and put it in another table. As the source table can have thousands or records which caused a timeout I decided to do it in batches of 100 records. The code is run on a schedule so doing it in batches works ok for the customer. If I have say 200 records in the source database the sproc runs very fast but if there are thousands it takes several minutes. I'm guessing that the "TOP 100" only takes the top 100 after it has gone through all the records. I need to change the whole code and sproc at some point as it doesn't scale but for now is there a quick fix to make this run quicker ? • Overlay SVG diagrams on google maps

  Hello I would like to add an overlay image on a google map. This image is a SVG file I have generated (python with svgfig). PS2: The SVG is composed of different filled paths and circles, with transparency. If there is no solution to overlay my SVG, I can use 2 alternative solutions: rasterize the SVG convert the paths and circles in GPolygons But, I do not really like the 1st solution because of the poor quality of the bitmap and the time to generate it with antialiasing. And for the 2nd solutions, the arcs, ellipses and circles will have to be decomposed into small polylines. A lot of them will be necessary for a good result. But I have around 3000 arcs and circles to draw, so...

• dotNet Templated, Repeating, Databound ServerControl: Modifying underlying ServerControl data per te

  I have a server control that wraps an underlying class which manages a number of indexes to track where it is in a dataset (ie: RenderedRecordCount, ErroredRecordCount, NewRecordCount, etc.). I've got the server control rendering great, but OnDataBinding I'm having an issue as to seems to happen after CreateChildControls and before Render (both of which properly manage the iteration of the underlying indexes). While I'm somewhat familiar with the ASP.NET page lifecycle, this one seems to be beyond me at the moment. So... How do I hook into the iterative process OnDataBinding uses so I can manage the underlying indexes? Will I have to iterate over the ITemplates myself, managing the indexes as I go or is there an easier solution? [edit: Agh... writing the problem out is very cathartic... I'm thinking this is exactly what I will need to do...] Also... I implemented the iteration of the underlying indexes during CreateChildControls originally in the belief that was the proper place to hook in for events like OnDataBinding (thinking it was done as the controls were being .Add'd). Now it seems that this may actually be unnecessary. So I guess the secondary question is: What happens during CreateChildControls? Are the unadulterated (read: with various <%-tags in place) controls added to the .Controls collection without any other processing?

  Hi, I am using Eclipse with the Drools plugin to create rules. I want to create business rules and main aim is to try and provide the user a set of options which he can use to create rules. For eg:If an Apple can have only 3 colors: I want to provide an option like a drop down so that the user can know before hand which are the options he can use in his rules. Is it possible? I am creating a dsl but unable to still provide the above functionality for a business rule. I am having an error implementing a basic dsl also.   Something doesn't seem right about the source code for Flash Remoting's Date(AS3) <- DateTime(.NET) stream reader/writer methods, when it comes to handling UTC <- Local times.
