  I have big file with utf16le (BOM) encoding. Is it possible to convert it to usual UTF8 by python?   Say I have a table with a unique positive integer field. I currently have rows with id's of [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 35]. Is there a insert query that I could write that would assign the id field to the lowest unique positive integer (in this case 6)? It would have to do this atomically so there isn't the possibility of concurrent inserts wiping out each other or failing.

• Should I use my models in a library?

  I've got my auth library in codeigniter which accesses the database to check to see if the email/password combination is correct. If I'm sticking to the MVC practice, should I move the function that interacts with the database to my model, or is it best practice to leave it where it is so I can use it in the future? Doesn't make much difference to me, other than the fact I'd have to re-write the library and create the function in my model, but if that's the way it should be then so be it.

Why don't they write a new VM for a new language?

  Is there an easy way to setup an environment on one machine (or a VM) with MySQL replication? I would like to put together a proof of concept of MySQL replication with one Master write instance and two slave instances for reads. I can see doing it across 2 or 3 VMs running on my computer, but that would really bog down my system. I'd rather have everything running on the same VM.   I'd like to implement measurement unit preferences in a Ruby on Rails app. For instance, the user should be able to select between displaying distances in miles or in kilometers.
