• Problem with .sh file

  I don't have any experience writing .sh files. I want to run the pvm2raw utility of this app from the Volume Library. • Revamped Joomla site to Google search engine

  I am about to upload a revamped site of Joomla (update from 1.5 to 2.5 + changes). I currently have a test bed subdomain that I am currently working on. In few days I am about to do the swap and replace the old site with the new one. I am worrying about Search Engines and specifically Google. The site currently has a very good rank (appears 2nd in the search), what actions do I have to take in order to be updated and preserve the rank? (except submitting the new sitemap I guess). It's not a difficult task but because I don't have the option to be wrong or mistakes to be done I an asking for a more "expert" advice.

• Defining the track in a 2D racing game

  I am designing a top-down racing game using canvas (html5) which takes a lot of inspiration from Micro Machines. In MM, cars can move off the track, but they are reset/destroyed if they go too far. My maths knowledge isn't great, so I'm finding it hard to separate 3D/complex concepts from those which are directly relevant to my situation. For example, I have seen "splines" mentioned, is this something I should read up on or is that overkill for a 2D game? Could I use a single path which defines the centre of the track and check a car's distance from this line? A second path might be required as a "racing line" for AI. Any advice on methods/techniques/terms to read up on would be greatly appreciated.

• How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

  I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

• Python Multiprocessing with Queue vs ZeroMQ IPC

  I am busy writing a Python application using ZeroMQ and implementing a variation of the Majordomo pattern as described in the ZGuide. I have a broker as an intermediary between a set of workers and clients. I want to do some extensive logging for every request that comes in, but I do not want the broker to waste time doing that. The broker should pass that logging request to something else. I have thought of two ways :- Create workers that are only for logging and use the ZeroMQ IPC transport Use Multiprocessing with a Queue I am not sure which one is better or faster for that matter. The first option does allow me to use the current worker base classes that I already use for normal workers, but the second option seems quicker to implement. I would like some advice or comments on the above or possibly a different solution.

• Metacity used with proprietary driver and proposed repository

  I enabled the proposed repository in a fresh install with the proprietary nvidia-173 driver. After the reboot, I noticed that minimizing and maximizing, there were none of the expected effect (using Ubuntu Classic, even with proprietary driver, Unity does not work - another issue). Furthermore I confirmed by trying to switch workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, and the square desktop wall was replaced by horizontally lined workspaces of Metacity. Of course, the upgraded Compiz could be responsible, but I can't figure out what to do - please advice. Additionally, if it's an issue with the softwares from proposed repo, how and what do I do to notify the developers of the issue?

• What is the best way to implement paginated text editing in Python?

  I'm trying to build a formatted text editor in python. I need the editor to be paginated on edit mode. Same as in all popular word processors - when the user is editing the document what he/she sees is a representation of the actual, physical, page. I've tried looking into PySide but I can't find any ready solution to this, nor I can work out a way to do it myself. I am totally open to new technologies, so if you think Python is not the right choice here I would love to hear about new stuff (especially when I'm this new to UI coding). It only needs to be cross-platform and let me do rapid development (hence me looking for an out-of-the-box solution to this). Please suggest the best way to implement this. • How to give control over keyboard back to X server after Alt + SysRq + R trick

  Situation: an application freezes the X server and no keyboard input works. So I use Alt+SysRq+R to take the keyboard out of raw mode (make the kernel take control of the keyboard away from the X server). I can then type Ctrl+Alt+F1, kill the bad processes, and everything works again. So far so good. But the keyboard is still in the hands of the kernel, making Alt+Left/Right shortcuts for Decr_Console/Incr_Console. This is annoying, and I want to give control over the keyboard back to the X server. I have tried typing Alt+SysRq+R again, this does not switch things back. I have also tried the command kbd_mode -u, but nothing changes. Any advice?

It has been my experience that projects get more complex and unmaintainable as more developers get involved in the development of the product. It seems that software at a certain stage of development has the tendency to get "hackier" and "hackier" especially when none of the team members that defined the architecture work at the company any more. I find it frustrating that a developer who has to change something has a hard time getting the big picture of the architecture. Therefore, there is a tendency to fix problems or make changes in a way that works against the original architecture. The result is code that gets more and more complex and even harder to understand. • Why Google Analytics is displaying wrong landing pages?

  I see all of my pages as Landing Pages in Google Analytics which cannot be true as I did not post those pages anywhere and I don't see any traffic hitting directly to that page. Also, I am using virtual page views on few buttons and I see those virtual pages as Landing pages too. For example, /click/request-a-quote 35000 views 35000 is too big a number to be ignored. Even if I ignore Virtual Pages Views, I see a lot of pages as Landing Pages that I am 100% sure that visitors ( atleast not so many users) are NOT hitting directly. Any advice, how to debug it? • Dual monitor working incorrectly on a Dell XPS 8300 with an AMD Radeon HD 6450

  I have been having trouble with Ubuntu on my Dell XPS 8300 (Actual image of the desktop). I have heard that the AMD Radeon HD 6450 has trouble with Ubuntu, and I believe that it is the source of the problem (though I am no expert by any means). When I boot the computer and choose to run Ubuntu, on a rare occasion both monitors (I have an AOC and a Samsung) will display their correct desktops, however most of the time, one of the desktops will be shifted away from its proper position and awkwardly positioned on the screen (showing the login box in the middle/right etc). If anyone has any advice on how to fix this, that would be greatly appreciated.

• As a Junior Software Engineer should I say that something has been done wrong if I feel so?

  I recently joined a company and it is my first job. When reading the code base, I felt that the code was not well written. It seemed to me that the code had most of the problems mentioned here and also seemed to have an Anemic Domain Model. There are no unit tests and they don't employ any code quality checking tools like findbugs or pmd. The problem I have is that the code is very difficult to understand. Maybe my conclusions are wrong because I am not that experienced. I need advice on whether to communicate the above facts to a superior or not. If I am to communicate, to whom(Tech Lead, Architect, Product Manager) and how? And if I do communicate will they take it badly since I'm a Junior and has no experience?

• converting 2d grid of squares to polygon nav mesh

  I haven't actually started programming for this one yet, but I wanted to see how I would go about doing this anyway. Say I have a 2D matrix of squares, all of the same size, some traversable and some not. How would I go about creating a navigation mesh of polygons from this grid. Is there any reading I can look at until I get a chance to get to my computer or should I just give it a go. My idea was to take the non-traversable squares out and extend lines from there edges to make polygons.. that's all I have got so far. Any advice?

• How do I get the Grub menu back after installing Windows on a separate disk?

  Tried sudo grub-install on sda1 but it complained about being a BAD IDEA. I had to install windows for a work related issue so I used a separate disk (I had used it for ubuntu on this computer, but bought a bigger disk so installed ubuntu on that and left the old one in in case I needed an old file). Windows installed fine but overwrote Grub. So if I choose the Ubuntu disk to boot first in BIOS I get a blank screen. I googled and followed this advice: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows However, when I get down to this section: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda1 I get this: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea… --recheck does nothing. Any ideas?

• How do I get "ruby" to do what "ruby1.9.1" does?

  I want to start off by saying... I really don't need to be using 1.9.2. I understand that you don't ever, ever use Python 3.2, so if the common advice is that I should use 1.8, I'll do that. But don't tell me to do that because it's easier. Whatever version I should be using, though, the question is still relevant: What's a good way to make one command do another command? (I suppose I could write a c program to launch ruby1.9.1, call the executable ruby, and put it in my bin, but this seems like less than a good idea)
