• Full text search for irregular rapper names with Solr

  I'm implementing full text search functionality on my rap website, and I'm running into some issues with rapper and song names. For example, someone might want to search for the rapper "Cam'ron" using the query "camron" (leaving out the mid-word apostrophe). Likewise, someone might search for the song "3 Peat" using the query "3peat". "The Notorious B.I.G." is a bit of a weird case: both "The Notorious BIG" and "The Notorious B.I.G." both work (I guess because the solr.StandardFilterFactory removes dots from acronyms?), but "The Notorious B.I.G" (i.e., minus the trailing dot) doesn't. Ideally all reasonable variations of these names should work. I'm guessing the answer has something to do with the solr.WordDelimiterFilterFactory, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm using Sunspot with Rails if that's relevant.

I've migrated the class to IronPython, created a library assembly and referenced it. Now, how do I actually get an instance of that class? • The most elegant way to encapsulate WinAPI callbacks inside a class

  Hello. I am thinking about elegant way to encapsulate WinAPI callbacks inside a class. Suppose I am making a class handling asynchronous I/O. All Windows callbacks should be stdcall functions, not class methods (I need to pass their addresses to ReadFileEx WinAPI function for example). So, I cannot just pass method addresses as a callback routines to WinAPI functions. What is the most elegant way to encapsulate functionality of this type inside a class so that the class have events OnReadCompleted and OnWriteCompleted (I am using Delphi as a primary language, but I guess the situation must be the same in C++ because class methods are different from simple methods by the fact, that the first hidden parameter of them is this link. Of course this class is not a singleton and there can be many of them created by app at the same time. What do you think would be the good way to implement this?

• Automatically minifying attribute/element names when using XmlSerializer

  When serializing a C# class using XmlSerializer, the attributes/elements representing the properties of the class will have the same names as they do in the source code. I know you can override this by doing like so: [XmlAttribute("num")] public int NumberOfThingsThatAbcXyz { get; set; } I'd like the generated XML for my classes to be as compact as possible, but obviously still capable of being automatically deserialized on the other side. Is there a way to have these names minified as much as possible without having to manually think of and annotate everything with a short string? The resultant XML being easily human readable isn't a concern.

• Normalizing Item Names & Synonyms

  Consider an e-commerce application with multiple stores. Each store owner can edit the item catalog of his store. My current database schema is as follows: item_names: id | name | description | picture | common(BOOL) items: id | item_name_id | picture | price | description | picture item_synonyms: id | item_name_id | name | error(BOOL) Notes: error indicates a wrong spelling (eg. "Ericson"). description and picture of the item_names table are "globals" that can optionally be overridden by "local" description and picture fields of the items table (in case the store owner wants to supply a different picture for an item). common helps separate unique item names ("Jimmy Joe's Cheese Pizza" from "Cheese Pizza") I think the bright side of this schema is: Optimized searching & Handling Synonyms: I can query the item_names & item_synonyms tables using name LIKE %QUERY% and obtain the list of item_name_ids that need to be joined with the items table. (Examples of synonyms: "Sony Ericsson", "Sony Ericson", "X10", "X 10") Autocompletion: Again, a simple query to the item_names table. I can avoid the usage of DISTINCT and it minimizes number of variations ("Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10", "Sony Ericsson - Xperia X10", "Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson") The down side would be: Overhead: When inserting an item, I query item_names to see if this name already exists. If not, I create a new entry. When deleting an item, I count the number of entries with the same name. If this is the only item with that name, I delete the entry from the item_names table (just to keep things clean; accounts for possible erroneous submissions). And updating is the combination of both. Weird Item Names: Store owners sometimes use sentences like "Harry Potter 1, 2 Books + CDs + Magic Hat". There's something off about having so much overhead to accommodate cases like this. This would perhaps be the prime reason I'm tempted to go for a schema like this: items: id | name | picture | price | description | picture (... with item_names and item_synonyms as utility tables that I could query) Is there a better schema you would suggested? Should item names be normalized for autocomplete? Is this probably what Facebook does for "School", "City" entries? Is the first schema or the second better/optimal for search? Thanks in advance!   I am implementing a single table inheritance inside Rails. Here is the corresponding migration: class CreateA < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up create_table :a do |t| t.string :type end end Class B inherits from A: class B < A end Now, it's easy to get all instances of class B: B.find(:all) or A.find_all_by_type("B") But how do I find all instances of class A (those that are not of type B)? Is this bad organization? I tried this: A.find_all_by_type("A") But instances of class A have a nil type. I could do A.find_all_by_type(nil) but this doesn't feel right, somehow. In particular, it would stop working if I decided to make A inherit from another class. Would it be more appropriate to define a default value for :type in the migration? Something like: t.string :type, :default => "A" Am I doing something wrong here?

  Currently I have this in my layout: <body class="<%= controller.controller_name %>"> I want to add an additional class that will be the same for all actions in any controller where it's set, something like: class SomeController < ApplicationController body_class 'page' ... end class AnotherController < ApplicationController body_class 'page' ... end Which will result in: <body class="some page"> <body class="another page"> What would be the easiest way to achieve this? Can I use controller class variables for this?

• Applet problem with IPlanet and Firefox (class not found)

  I have an applet which loads nicely when accessed locally (both IE and Firefox). However, when I put my webpage in a webserver (local IPlanet), it refuses to load on Firefox (but still fine on IE).   I am in the process of porting a simple CSS grid system to GWT. My CSS file currently has classes like .size1, .size2 etc., and I have a CSS resource that looks like - class MyResource extends CSSResource { @ClassName("size1") String size1(); @ClassName("size2") String size2(); // And so on } However what I really want, is to have a single function like the following - String size(int size); which will generate the appropriate class when passed the size as an integer at runtime. This is needed as I perform some calculations to determine the actual space available/needed for a widget in javascript and then attach the appropriate class name. Is this something that is even possible with GWT?

  URL: Link (1) According to this wesbite .. you cannot implement Abstract classes but derive from them. This makes sense and I have read this many times. Like an interface, you cannot implement an instance of an abstract class, however you can implement methods, fields, and properties in the abstract class that can be used by the child class. But on MSDN URL: TextWriter CLass on MSDN TextWriter is an abstract class but it has two constructors defined ... and according to the MS 70-536 book, the following statement is valid: TextWriter tw = new File.CreateText("myFile.Txt") The static file class and it's CreateText method is fine by me as I have studied it on MSDN but can somebody explain this little contradiction I have found? Surely I am not the first? Why is instantaion of base abstract classes possible????

• Making archive from files with same names in different directories

  Hi, I have some files with same names but under different directories. For example, path1/filea, path1/fileb, path2/filea, path2/fileb,.... What is the best way to make the files into an archive? Under these directories, there are other files that I don't want to make into the archive. Off the top of my head, I think of using Bash, probably ar, tar and other commands, but am not sure how exactly to do it. Renaming the files seems to make the file names a little complicated. I tend to keep the directory structure inside the archive. Or I might be wrong. Other ideas are welcome! Thanks and regards!

  I have an abstract class Moveable with the method abstract void move() which is extended by the class Bullet and the abstract class Character, and Character is extended by the class Survivor and the class Zombie. In Survivor and Bullet the move() method doesnt require any parameters while in the class Zombie the move() method depends on the actual position of the survivor. The survivor and multiple zombies are created in the class Gui. I wanted to access the survivor in Zombie - what's the best way of doing this? In Gui i wrote a method getSurvivor() but i don't see how to access this method in Zombie? I am aware that as a workaround i could just pass a [Survivor survivor] as parameter in move() and ignore it in Bullet and Survivor, but that feels so ... bad practice.

• LInq to SQL - Partial Class - C#

  Hi, I have a system with 2 different projects, one is called LINQ_Extensions and the other is ORM_Linq. On ORM_Linq i have the LINQ diagram with the SQL tables "converted" in clases. One of the Class is called "Tipos_Pago" In the other project i have another class (partial class) "Tipos_Pago". I want to use the method OnValidate to validate the properties include in the class "Tipos_Pago", so i create this partial class. In the 2 projects i put the same NameSpace "ORM_Linq"(I changed the NameSpace of the project "LINQ_Extensions" to have the same of the project "ORM_Linq") After those chages, Visual Studio give me this error: Error 1 No defining declaration found for implementing declaration of partial method 'ORM_Linq.Tipos_Pago.OnValidate(System.Data.Linq.ChangeAction)' C..\Tipos_Pago.cs 13 22 Extensiones_Linq I don't have any Idea of what happend, can someone help me? • jQuery .closest returns undefined

  I've got the code below which works fine, however the jquery to add the items doesnt find the data-parent-room value and just returns undefined. • Error Instantiating an Inner Class in Parent's Constructor...

  In my application's main class (subclass of Application), I have a public inner class that simply contains 3 public string objects. In the parent class I declare an object of that inner class. public class MainApplication extends Application { public class Data { public String x; public String y; public String z; } private Data data; MainApplication() { data = new Data() data.x = "String"; } } After I instantiate the object in the constructor, I get a runtime error when I try to assign any of the inner class object's variables. Any idea what's up here??

  I have an api listener script which takes in get parameters. But I seem to be having issues when users tend to pass mixed case variable names on the parameters. For example: http://mylistenerurl.com?paramName1=Hello&paramname2=World I need my listener to be flixible in such a way that the variable names will be interpreted case-insensitively or rather still all in lower case like after I process the query string on some function, they are all returned as lower-cased variables: extract(someFunction($_GET)); process($paramname1, $paramname2); Can anybody shed some light on this? *much appreciated. thanks!

• c++ "interface"-like classes similar to Java?

  In Java, you can define an interface as a class with no actual code implementation, but only to define the methods that a class must implement. Those types can be passed as parameters to methods and returned from methods. In C++, a pure virtual class can't be used as a parameter or return type, from what I can tell. Any way to mimic Java's interface classes? I have a string class in C++, and several subclasses for different encodings (like UTFxxx, ISOxxx, etc) that derive from the base string class. However, since there are so many different encodings, the base class has no meaningful implementation. But it would serve well as an interface if I could handle it as its own object and calls to that object would call on the correct subclass it was inherited to.

  I am using a WCF service in my project. This service returns a class called "Store". I created a new local class which inherits from "Store". My class is called "ExtendedStore". My ExtendedStore looks like this: class ExtendedStore : StoreManagerService.Store { public int Id; .... } Now I am using the WCF service to cast to my class using the following code: StoreManagerService.StoreClient client = new StoreManagerService.StoreClient(); ExtendedStore store = (ExtendedStore) client.GetStore(); // bombs here I am not able to cast the returned Store class from the service to my ExtendedStore class. I get the below error message: Unable to cast object of type 'ConsoleApplication1.StoreManagerService.Store' to type 'ConsoleApplication1.ExtendedStore'. Shouldn't I be able to cast it? If not, is there a workaround?

• Input multiple file names in windows open file dialog box

  Windows 7 allows you to select multiple files to open at once by using ctrl or shift key. The "File Name" input field at the bottom of the dialog box would auto populate with the following sample: "aaa.txt" "bbb.txt" "ccc.txt" "ddd.txt" I have 14,000 files in a folder and I only need a range of files (approx 500). When I use the shift key to select a range of files, the "File Name" field auto populates all 500 file names. Windows would cut me off at the 260th character when I try to paste in a pre-generated string into the "File Name" field. Is there a way to bypass the 260 character limit so it would accept my entire string with 500 file names?

This means that it can often be more space-efficient to have properties such as 't', or 'b' rather than 'title' or 'body', however for fear of confusion I would avoid this unless truly required! I am aware of solutions of how to do it I am more intrested in when is it truly required?

Second, how can I target only the first or second of multiple classes to store in the 'containerClass' variable, e.g., <div id="main-content" class="apples bananas">? Very much appreciated! svs
