• Spring-Security with X509?

  I am new to spring-security in general and am a bit confused. The project I am trying to integrate this with uses X509 certificates to identify users for signing in to the application. There are no usernames or passwords. We validate the certificates are good, and that they have been given access to our app. The question is how do I integrate spring in to this to get their roles using the X509 certificates? I have seen this: <http> ... <x509 subject-principal-regex="CN=(.*?)," user-service-ref="userService"/> ... </http> But I don't understand how this works. Will it still require something for a password? Or is the subject all it needs?

• What does transaction.commit() do when the flushmode is set manual in Hibernate?

  Here is a block of code in the Java Persistence with Hibernate book by Christian and Gavin, Session session = getSessionFactory().openSession(); session.setFlushMode(FlushMode.MANUAL); // First step in the conversation session.beginTransaction(); Item item = (Item) session.get(Item.class, new Long(123) ); session.getTransaction().commit(); // Second step in the conversation session.beginTransaction(); Item newItem = new Item(); Long newId = (Long) session.save(newItem); // Triggers INSERT! session.getTransaction().commit(); // Roll back the conversation! session.close();//enter code here I am confused that why the first step and second step need to be wrapped into two separate transactions? Since the flushmode is set manual here, no operations (suppose we ignore the insert here) will hit the database anyway. So why bother with transactions here? thanks

• WPF MediaPlayer doesn't play M4A?

  I am trying to use a MediaPlayer instance to play M4A files. For those of you that aren't familiar, MediaPlayer is the non-XAML version of a MediaElement. There are pretty much the same, but I don't want any XAML, so I use a MediaPlayer instead. Anyways, it plays some M4A files just fine. The NaturalDuration of other M4A files is 0, but it still plays. The remaining files don't play at all and the exception thrown is "Media file download failed." Playing all these songs using Windows Media Player works perfectly. Isn't the MediaPlayer and MediaElement classes built upon the same framework as WMP? I'm confused as to why it isn't working. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nick

• Asp.net RenderControl method not rendering autopostback for dropdownlist

Is there a work around to this?

  Hi, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get some matrix calculations working properly and started to wonder. If I have the following: glPushMatrix(); float m[16]; glGetFloatv(GL_MODELVIEW_MATRIX, m); glPopMatrix(); What should I expect the values of m to equal? Currently I'm getting these values and I'm confused as to where they're coming from: -1, 0, 0, 0, 0, -0.6139, 0.7893522, 0, 0, 0.789352238, 0.61394, 0, 0, 0.0955992, -1.344529, 1, I'm assuming there is something which affects this, but I'm not sure what. Could anyone help? I've tried changing pretty much anything but everytime I push the matrix stack I always get this matrix straight away! I don't think this makes a difference but I'm using OpenGLES.   Hello guys, I would like to insert the polygon containing Europe in my PostGIS database. I have the follwoing extremes points: NW = NorthWest Border(lat=82.7021697 lon=-28.0371000) NE = NorthEast Border(lat=82.7021697 lon=74.1357000) SE = SouthEast Border(lat=33.8978000 lon=74.1357000) SW = SouthWest Border(lat=33.8978000 lon=-28.0371000) Is the following a valid polygon: POLYGON((NWLon NWLat, NELon NELat, SELon SElat, SWLon SWLat, NWlon NWLat)) Is this a valid polygon? I do see some polygon with the follwing format POLYGON((), ()) ? When are they used? Why not a linestring? Any help will be apreciated? This is getting me really confused. Thanks

  I am using T4toolbox, I am confused what the generator is for. I can run the following public class Generator1 : Generator { protected override void RunCore() { Template1 t = new Template1(); t.Output.File = "t3.txt"; t.Render(); } } or I can run t4 script directly like the following. Template1 t = new Template1(); t.Output.File = "t3.txt"; t.Render(); But I can do the same using t4 script without generator as well. So I mean can do the same thing with two approach "script -- generator -- template" and "script -- template", am I missing something? Thanks

• When is a webapp called Beta, alpha, pre-alpha, or none

  I've come across many apps on the web that call themselves Beta. I've come across other apps that had an alpha designation. I've even come across some that called themselves pre-alpha, whatever that means (if you know please clarify). Then I've come across some really bad webapps that shouldn't have left the developer's computer and they didn't have any beta designations. I've also seen some well built apps that called themselves Beta, including Stack Exchange (the mother site of SO) which I believe is very full featured to be called a Beta. I'm a little confused. It seems people are doing it at their whims. Is there an established rule or a checklist that can help decide what stage an app is in (beta, alpha, pre-alpha, or none)? P.S. Please feel free to retag as appropriate.

• Trying to find a good strategy using Git for personal development on local/personal machine

  A noob here. I have a personal Macbook and I want to use Git to track the changes etc. I want to just init a repo on my macbook and work there. Is this a good idea? What if: I have a main repo somewhere in my Macbook HD, like, /Users/user/projects/project1 and clone it to another area on my macbook where I actually perform development? But there is a lot of redundancy in this. I am a little confused and want to know what are the usual steps folks take in a similar personal development environment. Thanks a lot.

• Rails ActionMailer problems on Mac

  I've been working on learning to use Rails the last couple days and I've run into something that I haven't been able to solve with Google. So I'm just creating a basic contact form that sends an email. Everything seems to be working ok in testing, which tells me that the form is working, and ActionMailer was implemented correctly, however, I'm having trouble configuring ActionMailer. I'm running OSX 10.6.2. I have postfix running and have verified that it's running using telnet localhost 25. When I try to use the form I get a "Connection refused" error. This is my current configuration: config.action_mailer.smtp_settings = { :address => 'localhost', :port => 25 } I thought I might need to set :domain but I'm kind of confused on what that should be set to in this situation.

• Is it possible to capture a window with windows 7 DWM thumbnail in it?

  I am starting to believe that you can do nothing with Windows API. I have two windows. One has a DWM thumbnail in it. What I want to do is, I want to be able to capture the screen of the window with the thumbnail into the other one. When I do this, using bitblt, everything is copied except the thumbnail. It just isn't there in the bitmap. So how does the DWM rendering work? I mean, if DWM renders thumbnails directly onto the DC of the registered window, then my approach should work. I'm confused. • Supporting multiple screen sizes with Android using ImageButtons

  I've read the Android documentation: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html but still have some questions. I'm trying to design a music application which basically has images of the instrument (ImageButton) that play a sound when clicked. However, I'm confused about how to have the ImageButtons scale to fit all the different screen sizes and how to position them. Which layout is best used for needing to position ImageButtons in specific locations on the screen? (i.e. cymbals on a drum set) FrameLayout, RelativeLayout? If I only really care about medium and large screens, do I need to create different resources (images) for both as well as a different XML layout to position them? I'm trying to find the simplest way to do this without having to create a separate layout XML file for positioning/size and separate image resources for each screen. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Virtual functions and polymorphism

  Suppose I have this: class A { public: virtual int hello(A a); }; class B : public A { public: int hello(B b){ bla bla }; }; So, A it's an abstract class. 1)In the class B, I'm defining a method that its suppose overrides the A class. But the parameter it's slightly different. I'm not sure about this, is this correct? Maybe because of polymorphism, this is ok but its rather confusing. 2) If I do: A a = new B;, and then a.hello(lol); if "lol" it's not of type B, then it would give compile error?, and if it's of type A from another class C (class C : public A), what would happend? I'm confused about the overriding and virtual thing.. all examples I found work with methods without parameters. Any answer, link, or whatever it's appreciated. thanks pd: sorry for my english

  I am trying to use CoreData to populate a UITableView. I have been using the developer "Locations" project, and I think I have everything correct. But, now I am getting the following error when I build: request for member 'tableView' in something not a structure or union Why would it be confused about tableView? I am using it many times in the methods. Now how to represent the beginning of a day. The below fails with DateTime dt = fmt.parseDateTime("11/4/03 00:01 AM"); Cannot parse "11/4/03 00:01 AM": Value 0 for clockhourOfHalfday must be in the range [1,12] I'm obviously confused with the standards, like what is the short representation of the beginning of a day. thanks.

INT, INTEGER, SMALLINT, TINYINT DEC, DECIMAL LONGCHAR, LONGVARCHAR DATETIME, SMALLDATETIME Is there some documentation somewhere which lists the min./max. capacities of the various data-types? For example, I guess smallint holds a larger maximum value than tinyint, but a smaller value than integer, but I have no idea of what these capacities are. Any help would be appreciated. • Using Qt to read and parse html files with QWebKit?

  I would like to read and parse certain elements of html files but I'm not interested in rendering it in any way. Basically I would like to go through all my div tags and get some of its style attributes. • Anti-aliased text on HTML5's canvas element

  I'm a bit confused with the way the canvas element anti-aliases text and am hoping you all can help. In the following screenshot the top "Quick Brown Fox" is an H1 element and the bottom one is a canvas element with text rendered on it. On the bottom you can see both "F"s placed side by side and zoomed in. • C++0x and the Lack of Polymorphic Lambdas - Why?

  I've been reviewing the draft version of the upcoming C++0x standard. Specifically the section on lambdas, and am confused as to the reasoning for not introducing polymorphic lambdas. I had hoped we could use code such as the following: template<typename Container> void foo(Container c) { for_each(c.begin(),c.end(),[](T& t) { ++t; }); } What were the reasons: Was it the committee ran out of time? That polymorphic lambdas are too hard to implement? Or perhaps that they are seen as not being needed by the PTB?

I have a SQL Server DB with these tables: Users (userID, userName, userPass, roleID) Roles (roleID, roleName) Pages (pageID, pageURL) RolesXPages(pageID, roleID) How is the best way to create a structure to store all this information while the user navigates the site, I mean, on the thread I should be able to check his role, his pages (the ones he can access) I have been reading and there is a lot of stuff there where Im confused, I saw the MembershipProvider, IPrincipal, IIdentity, etc classes but Im not sure what should be the best one for me. Any thoughts... Thanks in advance! Edit: Everytime gets more confusing... I just want to handle those structures at runtime and be able to mantain state during page callbacks or changing pages...

• Best approch for creating Base control

  Hi, I am looking for a solution for this scenario - I need to implement a feature to allow user to add various controls to canvas(WPF, custom and third party ) and then select any one of them and modify some properties in property grid(changes needs to be reflected in UI). I don't want to expose all the properties of any control only some of them(relevant to end user); apart from this there are some properties which will be common for all controls e.g. Title, Value(Value will be bound to some property of a control, say Text of TextBox and Content of Label) etc. I am thinking of putting all the common proeprties at one place. Things I am confused aout - How to create such base class, whether to use UserControl or Custom Control for this? How will the binding work between Control, base class proeprties and PropertyGrid? What type of object will I expose to property grid? Any idea on what approch should be followed in this case, any kind of input will really be helpful.

• How do uppercase and lowercase letters differ by only one bit?

  I have found one example in Data and Communication Networking book written by Behrouza Forouzan regarding upper- and lowercase letters which differ by only one bit in the 7 bit code. For example, character A is 1000001 (0x41) and character a is 1100001 (0x61).The difference is in bit 6, which is 0 in uppercase letters and 1 in lowercase letters. If we know the code for one case, we can easily find the code for the other by adding or subtracting 32 in decimal, or we can just flip the sixth bit. What does all this mean? I have found myself very confused with all these things. Could someone provide examples of how these things really work out?
