  • Ubuntu 14.04 + nvidia-331-updates makes a blank desktop screen

    I upgraded my installation from 13.10 to 14.04. The problem is that whenever I install the Nvidia drivers from the GUI, upon reboot or trying to login again it only shows the wallpaper of my desktop and nothing else. The mouse does move around, but nothing works. I am unable to open a terminal or do anything else. If I go into the tty console and purge the drivers, then things seem to work again. I have an Optimus setup, with an onboard Intel and discrete Nvidia GTX770M card. It's a 64-bit architecture. I really need to work with CUDA, and was hopeful after hearing that nvidia-prime was released, but this is a real downer. Any help on this?

  • WMV will play audio but not show images (dark screen)

    This happens on one computer. On the other computer I can see the video. I've installed GStreamer, FFMpeg and Ubuntu Restricted Extras. On the computer where it doesn't work, I've tried both Movie Player and VLC. There must be some difference between the two computers, but how can I obtain all the system information in such a way that a diff could be reasonably done? Or just any other suggestion on how to solve this would be appreciated. :-)

  • Velvet screen after grub selection

    After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, the boot seems to stop after selecting the ubuntu option (same with the rescue one) in the grub menu. At first I thought this was related to grub-efi, as I've had similar problems after a Ubuntu 11.04 update which replaced grub-efi with grub-pc and got me stuck on a "elf magic" grub console (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/800910). While the 11.04 problem was resolved with a simple chroot and apt-get install from the live cd, that solution doesn't work this time. The drive with the bootloader is a sata3 ssd with 64 gb gpt (sdb1 20 mb efi boot partition fat16, sdb2 60 gb root ext4 and sdb3 4 gb swap) on a msi e350ia-e45 mainboard with a pair of 2 TB ext4 mbr drives for photos/music/movies. I've tried a few grub-install/update-grub with boot-directory sdb1 from chroot, but I cant seem to go anywhere. Even this guide: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#EFI (ofc I replaced grub2 with grub in the grub-install and efibootmgr commands) doesnt seem to get me anywhere. Any help or ideas are appeciated ;) edit: I guess its the combination of gpt/uefi that also seems to haunt f16 edit: same with 12.04 beta btw

  • Ubuntu partition won't display on screen

    I installed ggobi on my MacBook Pro, and it wasn't working right. I looked up some information, and found this site: Gtk Warning: Cannot open display I followed the vague instructions, but I think I just typed export DISPLAY=:0 directly into my terminal (I'm still in my Mac partition at this point). Fast forward a few days, and I try to go into my Ubuntu partition. It only gives me command line options. I remember my reckless input from a few days back, and I'm certain that it is the issue. My problem is that I have no idea how to get my previous display settings back. My Mac partition seems unaffected, but it'd be nice to get back into my Ubuntu partition. My last resort is completely reverting my computer to my most recent backup before I changed it, but if anyone out there knows how to fix this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    I did not have this issue with Ubuntu 11.10. Well, to be clear, I did, but it was easily remedied with compiz workarounds. I have tried both the propriety and open source ati drivers, and the intel HD 3000 (as far as I know) should be part of the Kernel already. So I am pretty much 100% stumped given my general lack of Linux knowledge. I really enjoy this OS, would hate to have to return to Windows (read: HATE) because of something as trivial as video playback. Some details: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e520 Intel HD 3000/AMD HD Radeon 6630m Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.

  • Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

    I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured.   • Oracle Linux screen freezes during installation

    I was installing Oracle Linux 6.4 on a server, and the screen suddenly froze. Here were the previous steps: I put in the disk, clicked install, checked the disk (no errors), did pre-install setup (clock, root password, host+domain name, etc.), configured two 40GB hard drives in a RAID1 array (no swap, 3100mb encrypted raid partitions, ~100mb ext4 partition mounting to /boot, encrypted ext4 RAID device with mounting to /), selected packages, hit continue. The system did its short preinstall processes, then when to the main installation screen with the long status bar. The installer proceeded like always, but around package 250 out of ~1000, the screen suddenly went black with a text cursor in the upper left corner of the screen and the mouse cursor in its previous place. Neither cursor moved and the only thing that triggered a response was a ctrl-alt-delete that rebooted it. I have run this in VMs before without this issue. Memtest hasn't reported anything, and the media check went smoothly. The machine has supported Ubuntu server without issues before. Any ideas? I have tried booting after that, but the grub bootloader tries to find fd0 for some reason (I have no idea why it would search for the floppy disk). UPDATE My server successfully installed, but won't boot up. I think that, for some reason, it is still using the old bootloader from the previous installation. Any ideas on how to fix that?

    Good Evening members 1) Recently i have installed the plymouth manager and i accidentally set my resolution to 1024X768-24 which does not fit my laptop exactly and everytime my system reboots an error message shows that error: incorrect settings 1024X768-24. I tried to change the resolution from the system seetings Display but now only this 1024X768 is shown in the drop down. Kindly help me to reset the display properties to default. 2) Additionally plymouth is also not responding when i click on it and i want to uninstall it kindly help me in that too.     So I just went through driver update. The os froze so I had to hard reboot the pc. Now I just get the login promt in terminal. so i try to run startx. codeError: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 304.43 but this NVIDIA driver Component has version 295.49| i just got this error... I have to type sudo su then modprobe ndiswrapper to get my wifi to work, so step by step instructions after that would be greatly helpful

  • How to change screen resolution for installation

    I am trying to install Unity on an old computer with a 1.7 ghz cpu but the installation windows only show the top quarter of the window (so unable to see or select all the prompts in the window). I have tired going to system settings, but because I cannot see all of windows, I cannot change system settings to make the resolution smaller. Is there any way to change the resolution so that I can see the full window so that I can complete the installation?

  • Issues with new graphics card and drivers

    With my onboard graphics card (Intel HD 4000) I was able to use 1680x1050 screen resolution. Using the same screen and an Asus ENGTS250 graphics card with 296.10 drivers installed, I'm not able to use that resolution anymore. Also, I've been having other trouble with driver installations. Using 340.52 or 337.88, I can't boot into Windows 7. I see the Windows Welcome screen and then the screen goes black, loses signal and the computer locks up. I think the drivers issues and the resolution problems go hand-in-hand. I have a feeling I could use a newer driver than 296.10 which would give me access to use the 1680x1050 resolution I want to use, but I'm terrified that if I update or install another driver, that the computer will lock up again. Can anyone recommend a [better] driver for me to use?

    I have an acer widescreen monitor set at 1024x768 running Ubuntu 12.04.4 precise, I have adjusted the resolution to match in display settings however the ubuntu side bar and files are all enlarged. its like it has zoomed in. I have read through all other related posts and cannot come up with a fix. The desktop was fine up until 3 days ago then it changed and I have no idea why, can someone help? Thanks

  • Cannot pass the login screen after upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10

    I just performed the upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The updater downloaded all packages but a few ones that the system said were already installed. When asked for it, I chose to install the new maintainer's version of grub. Now after that my system start up to the login page, some images won't load. Moreover, after I try to login, the graphical instance does not load, it just sits there showing the mouse pointer and nothing else.

  • Screen rendering problems after upgrading to 12.10

    Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10 I'm suffering severe rendering issues in unity: Some parts of any application (for instance Firefox, or emacs, etc) are blank, or are not rendered, or are blinking. Some fonts in an application are not correct rendered, maybe only some part (see Eclipse screenshot). There is some shadows in desktop background. It's something that occurs from time to time (it's works great for hours and suddenly start to give this rendering problems). I was trying to find a bug in launchpad but without success. My card (using i915 module): 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0042] (rev 02) I've tried to reset compiz/unity or gnome but does not help.   • popViewController does not autorotate back to allowed orientation

    I have two UIViewControllers, "A" and "B", where "A" overrides the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation to return YES for UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait, and "B" returns YES for all orientations. In my example "A" is the root navigation view controller, and I then use pushViewController for "B". After that I rotate the device into landscape, which successfully autorotates "B", then I pop "B" (back button or via popViewController) to return to "A". When targetting iPhone OS 3.1.3, "A" returns to the portrait orientation as expected. When targetting iPhone OS 3.2, I have two side-effects: "A" is displayed in landscape. The navigation bar does not update even though "A" is now displayed. The navigation bar still shows the items for "B". Only after trying to go back/pop one more time will the navigation bar animate to show the items for "A". If I instead attempt to push "B" again and go back, I have to pop twice before the navigation bar animates to show the items for "A". During these "intermediate pops" the view for "A" remains displayed. While researching this issue, I have seen other answers suggesting performing the rotation manually ([UIDevice setOrientation] or via a tranformation), however this does not help understand what the problem is, especially why it behaves differently between the two OS's. So my question is: must all of my UIViewControllers on the UINavigationController stack support exactly the same orientations going forward? And if not, then is there something that I need to do to make it behave as it did for OS 3.1.3?

  • How do I reliably get the size of my iPhone view taking rotations into consideration?

    My application uses a UITabBarController, multiple UINavigationControllers, and supports autorotation. In order to properly layout the subviews within each UIViewController's main view, I really need to know the size available to the UIViewContoller. I need this size to take the UINavigationBar, the UITabBar, and the status bar all into account, and thus only return the size available to the content view. I thought for sure I could use the following from within the UIViewController's code: CGRect viewControllerBounds = [[self view] bounds]; However, there are a couple of issues with this approach: The first time the view is loaded, viewControllerBounds reports the view as being 320 pixels wide by 460 pixels tall. This is wrong. With a status bar and a navigation bar showing, the height should only be 416 pixels. However, if I rotate the simulator to landscape and then rotate back, the height of viewControllerBounds changes to 416. If I rotate the first view in the navigation controller to landscape mode and then push another view controller onto the stack, viewControllerBounds for the new view reports a width of 300 pixels and a height of 480 pixels. So the view's bounds didn't even take the rotation into account. Is there a better way to do this? I really don't want to have to start hardcoding the widths and heights of all the various UI elements the iPhone OS provides. I have tried setting the autoresizing mask of the UIViewController's view, but that doesn't seem to change anything. The views definitely seem to be displaying properly. When I set a background color that view looks like it takes up all of the space available to it. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • iOS6: do we have to set rootViewController in App delegate in order to support different orientations?

    The app was perfectly fine working in iOS5 in landscape orientation. However in iOS6, it started to use portrait orientation in all view controllers. The methods shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation are not called anymore. I read the new stuff about changed rotation mechanism in iOS6 and I was able to fix that by adding a line in my AppDelegate: self.window.rootViewController = _viewController _viewControler is the starting screen (Home-menu). All other view controllers implement shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method and returns YES for landscape orientations only. So, it's perfectly working solution for the app that needs to support only one orientation. However, the problem is I need one view controller (lets call it phone-VC) to be presented in portrait orientation. Now, if I want this view controller would be rotated then I need to return YES in Home-menu controller that is assigned to rootViewControler in appDelegate. However, I can't do that because this rootViewController is starting window that need to presented in landscape only, otherwise the layout with graphics in this window will break. But if I don't return YES from its shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation (Home-menu) then the same method is not called in my view phone-VC that needs to be presented in portrait. Any ideas? Does the assignation of rootViewController is mandatory in AppDelegate? UPDATE: the problem exists on device (at least on iPhone4).

  • How can I prevent the scaling of a UIWebview's content after reorientation?

    I'm building an iOS 5/6 app that has a UIWebView. It loads some HTML that I have embedded in my app. Now when I rotate my device, the WebView changes its size (as I want it to fill the entire width of the screen). And then it gets weird: some content gets scaled up and some content doesn't get scaled up. See this image with some example text in it: As you can see, the header (H6) stays the same, while the paragraph gets scaled up. Does anybody have an idea how to prevent this? I want the html to look the same in landscape as it does in portrait mode. I've tried setting the viewport scaling to 1: <meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0,max-scale=1.0"> but that doesn't help. The body's font-size style is set to 14px, but changing that to 14pt or a percentage also made no difference. Setting the width of the body to 100% also didn't help. Strangely, removing the line break (<br/>) that's in the text fixes it but I need line breaks to be in there so that's no solution. The only thing that does work is reloading the UIWebView's content after an orientation change, but that doesn't prevent it from looking wrong during rotation, and it resets any scrolling that the user may have done. Any ideas?

  • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

    I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button.     I m creating an app that has to display CFUserNotificationDisplayAlert even if iPhone Screen is Locked, currently i am using this code CFOptionFlags responseFlags = 0; CFUserNotificationDisplayAlert(20.0, 3, NULL, NULL, NULL, CFSTR("Hello"), CFSTR("Hello World"), CFSTR("OK"), NULL, NULL, &responseFlags); This works great on Home Screen but doesnt pop up if the screen is locked. Is there anything else i have to add to it to make it appear on the Lock Screen as well?
