• Creating a Ruby method that pads an Array

  I'm working on creating a method that pads an array, and accepts 1. a desired value and 2. an optional string/integer value. Desired_size reflects the desired number of elements in the array. If a string/integer is passed in as the second value, this value is used to pad the array with extra elements. I understand there is a 'fill' method that can shortcut this - but that would be cheating for the homework I'm doing. The issue: no matter what I do, only the original array is returned. I started here: class Array def pad(desired_size, value = nil) desired_size >= self.length ? return self : (desired_size - self.length).times.do { |x| self << value } end end test_array = [1, 2, 3] test_array.pad(5) From what I researched the issue seemed to be around trying to alter self's array, so I learned about .inject and gave that a whirl: class Array def pad(desired_size, value = nil) if desired_size >= self.length return self else (desired_size - self.length).times.inject { |array, x| array << value } return array end end end test_array = [1, 2, 3] test_array.pad(5) The interwebs tell me the problem might be with any reference to self so I wiped that out altogether: class Array def pad(desired_size, value = nil) array = [] self.each { |x| array << x } if desired_size >= array.length return array else (desired_size - array.length).times.inject { |array, x| array << value } return array end end end test_array = [1, 2, 3] test_array.pad(5) I'm very new to classes and still trying to learn about them. Maybe I'm not even testing them the right way with my test_array? Otherwise, I think the issue is I get the method to recognize the desired_size value that's being passed in.   I have the following code: var selected = $('#hiddenField').val().split(","); ... if (selected.indexOf(id) > 0) { ... set value ... } I'm dynamically creating a CheckBoxList, and trying to remember the state of the checkboxes by putting the selected IDs into the hidden field. I get an error stating that "Object doesn't support this property or method". My assumption is that selected is an array, which should support indexOf. Is that incorrect?

• how to synchronize database table and directory with php

  hello, I have a directory with files and a database table with what should be the same files. I would like to be able to synchronize the database table with the directory. What would be the most efficient way to do this? or would I realistically only be able to do this in a brute manner? Here's my approach: 1. retrieve all of the files in the directory as array 2. retrieve all of the filenames in the database table as array 3. loop through the file values in the directory array and use in_array() on the database table array to verify the filename is in that array, and if not then start building an array to insert the missing filenames. run db query to add each missing file row to database table 4. loop through directory array and use in_array() on the directory array and anything not found in the directory array will just be deleted from the table. Is there a better way to go about this? or something better for this in php than in_array()?

  I'm just learning JS, trying to do things without jQuery, and I want to make something similar to this however I want to use an array of images instead of just the one. My image array is formed like this var image_array = new Array() image_array[0] = "image1.jpg" image_array[1] = "image2.jpg" And the canvas element is written like this. (Pretty much entirely taken from the Mozilla site) function draw() { var ctx = document.getElementById('canvas').getContext('2d'); var img = new Image(); img.src = 'sample.png'; img.onload = function(){ for (i=0;i<5;i++){ for (j=0;j<9;j++){ ctx.drawImage(img,j*126,i*126,126,126); } } } } It uses the image "sample.png" in that code but I want to change it to display an image from the array. Displaying a different one each time it loops. Apoligies if I've not explained this well.

  Hi, C bothers me with its handling of strings. But i cannot think any solution. How do i find unique strings in an array. Example input : abc def abe abc def deg entered unique ones : abc def abe deg should be found.

  I have a string that contains a value "firstword second third", and an ArrayList. I want to split the whole string in to by spaces and add the splitted strings in to the ArrayList. For example,"firstword second third" can be split to three separate strings and added three times in to the ArrayList. "1 2 3 4" can be splitted in to 4 strings and added 4 times in to the ArrayList.   This question is related to BuddyPress, and a follow-up question from this question I have a .csv-file with 790 rows and 3 columns where the first column is the group name, second is the group description and last (third) the slug. The column sums are easy via the 'dims' argument of colSums(): > colSums(a, dims = 1) but I cannot find a way to use rowSums() on the array to achieve the desired result, as it has a different interpretation of 'dims' to that of colSums(). It is simple to compute the desired row sums using: > apply(a, 3, rowSums) [,1] [,2] [1,] 12 12 [2,] 15 15 [3,] 18 18 but that is just hiding the loop. Are there other efficient, truly vectorised, ways of computing the required row sums?
