• Effects of HTTP/TCP connection handshakes and server performance

  When running apache bench on the same server as the website like: ab -n 1000 -c 10 localhost:8080/ I am most probably not getting accurate results when compared to users hitting the server from various locations. I'm trying to understand how or rather why this will effect real world performance since a user in china will have different latency issues when compared to someone in the same state/country. Say my web server has a maximum thread limit of 100. Can someone explain in detail how end user latency can/will effect server performance. I'm assuming here that each request will be computed equally at say 10ms. What I'm not understand is how external factors can effect overal server performance, specifically internet connections (location, or even device like mobile) and http/tcp handshakes etc.

• What Would Google Do?

  Last year I read Jeff Jarvis' book What Would Google Do? and found it very interesting. Jeff is a long-time journalist that's been studying technology, and more specifically the internet. He used his skills to reverse-engineer Google into a list of "Google rules," then goes on to describe a futuristic world driven by these rules. Its an interesting look at crowd-sourcing, openness, and collaboration across many industries, including retail (Google Shops). This year Jeff Jarvis will be a keynote speaker at CrossTalk, Oracle's user conference dedicated to the retail industry. This year's theme is... Retail Redefined: Redesign. Reinvigorate. Reimagine. I think that's pretty appropriate given the massive changes the industry has undergone during the last three years. The thing I really like about this conference is that we try to let the retailers do most of the talking. I'm very interested in hearing about the innovative projects they've got brewing, and where they think our industry is heading. I'll be speaking, but I'm not sure about what so let me know of any interesting topics.

• Use a Free Tool to Edit, Delete, or Restore the Default Hosts File in Windows

  The hosts file in Windows contains mappings of IP addresses to host names, like an address book for your computer. Your PC uses IP addresses to find websites, so it needs to translate the host names into IP addresses to access websites. When you enter a host name in a browser to visit a website, that host name is looked up in DNS servers to find the IP address. If you enter IP addresses and host names for websites you visit often, these websites will load faster, because the hosts file is loaded into memory when Windows start and overrides DNS server queries, creating a shortcut to the sites. Because the hosts file is checked first, you can also use it to block websites from tracking your activities on the internet, as well as block ads, banners, third-party cookies, and other intrusive elements on webpages. Your computer has its own host address, known as its “localhost” address. The IP address for localhost is 127.0.0.1. To block sites and website elements, you can enter the host name for the unwanted site in the hosts file and associate it with the localhost address. Blocking ads and other undesirable webpage elements, can also speed up the loading of websites. You don’t have to wait for all those items to load. The default hosts file that comes with Windows does not contain any host name/IP address mappings. You can add mappings manually, such as the IP address 74.125.224.72 for www.google.com. As an example of blocking an ad server website, you can enter the following line in your hosts file to block doubleclick.net from serving you ads. • Ubuntu can't find the correct max resolution with Samsung SyncMaster SA300

  i decided to install ubuntu also on my desktop PC (Windows has been exorcised from my life) but i am having some problems i didn't have with previous hardware configurations. My display is a Samsung SyncMaster SA300, on windows vista the maximum resolution (1920x1080) worked well, but now, ubuntu (after installing fglrx drivers) tells me that the maximum resolution is 1600x1200 I googled a lot last night, and i found a lot of people solving this (on different displays though) with xrandr. I was not able to do it, because xrandr keep complaining "you goddamn maximum resolution is 1600x1600". But last night, when i tried to select it, my screen went black, and i had to power off the pc. Any clues? am i on the wrong path?

I notice on paid wireless, they can provide a login page if user is not login yet, i think this is a way of implementing proxy. • Isolating VMware virtual machines from the network

  I have: VMware Workstation 7 running on a Windows 7 box (with a single NIC), with multiple virtual machines running a range of OSs. The host box is connected to a WRT54G router running Tomato firmware. The router is acting as a wireless bridge to another WRT54G that's wired to my broadband modem. I can access the VMs externally via VNC using VMware's Remote Display. Over time I've had these running: a. Using NAT networking (single IP) with port forwarding on the router and a custom port in VMware for each VM. b. Using bridged networking with static IPs assigned to each VM via MAC address, and port forwarding on the router to each IP running with standard ports. Either way, the host box, and other physical machines on the network are accessible from the VMs. Is there a way to isolate the VMs from the rest of the network, but still maintain internet access and remote VNC to the VMs?

  Im setting up a combined website and extranet currently, they both read from the same database on the same server as the site is hosted on. The reason being that the website is fed from the data that the staff plug into the extranet interface. it also links in to AD for authorising access to the extranet. I have the extranet in a folder within the website folder. What I want to do is only allow the extranet to be accessed from computers within our LAN, but allow the main website to be freely accessible to internet users. I have it set up as a generic web server currently, so anyone can view anything (well up to the point where the user is asked to log into the extranet of course! I have read a lot on this but nothing I read applies to, or works in IIS7.5

• CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me. • Wireless Bridge with NetGear and TP-Link

  I have a wireless NetGear WGR614 v7 (little old) router connected to the internet, but I can't get a good signal in the other end of my house. I have another new one, model TP-Link TL-WR941ND wireless router. I was able to do the stuff works using a wired cable, but now, I would like to do the same using wireless connections (bridge mode, some like WDS?) Now, the computer connected to TP LINK was able to ping my computer connected to NETGEAR, but we cannot go IP ADDRESS outside my network, only internals ones. What can I do to configure this? Is needed that BOTH wireless routers support BRIDGE mode or only one its good enough? Thanks a lot!!

  I know this has been asked a few (thousand) times around the internet but I was hoping someone whose in the know might be able to comment on my particular setup. I have a web server hosting one site (php/codeigniter) with a wordpress blog in a sub directory. The server has 2GB RAM, 3GHz CPU and I have offloaded the static assets to CloudFlare which is has reduced bandwidth for the actual server by almost 75%. The problem I have is when an email campaign is sent out that links to the site or blog, it slows down. Below is my settings in apache2.conf. Average apache process size is 80M and there is 1.5GB available for apache. <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 8 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 20 MaxClients 20 MaxRequestsPerChild 2000 </IfModule> I have already setup and installed apc and built some caching into the site and used w3totalcache on the blog. • Is copy paste programming bad ?

  With plain google as well as google code search tools it is easy to find how to program using some resource or solve certain problems ( such as a Java class, or a ftp block in perl etc) and so developers are so tempted to just purely copy paste the code (in a way re-use) - is this an incompetency? I have done this myself though I think I am a better programmer than many others I have seen. Who has the time to RTFM? In this age of information abundance, I do not think that copy paste programming is bad. Isn't that what sites like stackoverflow do anyway? People ask - ok here is my problem - how to solve it? now someone will post complete code and the person who asked the question would simply copy paste the most voted answer. No matter how small the problem is. I am working with a bunch of young coders who heavily rely on internet to get their job done. I see convenience (for example, you may be quite good with algorithms and such but you may not know how to use a BufferedReader in Java - would you read complete Javadoc for BufferedReader or look up some example of using it somewhere??) in copy pasting and modifying code to get the job done. What are the real dangers of copy paste coding that can impact their competency?

• F# WPF Form &ndash; the basics

  I was listening to Dot Net Rocks show #560 about F# and during the podcast Richard Campbell brought up a good point with regards to F# and a GUI. In essence what I understood his point to be was that until one could write an end to end application in F#, it would be a hard sell to developers to take it on. In part I agree with him, while I am beginning to really enjoy learning F#, I can’t but help feel that I would be a lot further into the language if I could do my Windows Forms like I do in C# or VB.NET for the simple reason that in “playing” applications I spend the majority of the time in the UI layer… So I have been keeping my eye out for some examples of creating a WPF form in a F# project and came across Tim’s F# Twitter Stream Sample, which had exactly this…. of course he actually had a bit more than a basic form… but it was enough for me to scrap the insides and glean what I needed. So today I am going to make just the very basic WPF form with all the goodness of a XAML window. Getting Started First thing we need to do is create a new solution with a blank F# application project – I have made mine called FSharpWPF. Once you have the project created you will need to change the project type from a Console Application to a Windows Application. You do this by right clicking on the project file and going to its properties… Once that is done you will need to add the appropriate references. You do this by right clicking on the References in the Solution Explorer and clicking “Add Reference'”. You should add the appropriate .Net references below for WPF & XAMl to work. Once these references are added you then need to add your XAML file to the project. You can do this by adding a new item to the project of type xml and simply changing the file extension from xml to xaml. Once the xaml file has been added to the project you will need to add valid window XAML. Example of a very basic xaml file is shown below… <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="F# WPF WPF Form" Height="350" Width="525"> <Grid> </Grid> </Window> Once your xaml file is done… you need to set the build action of the xaml file from “None” to “Resource” as depicted in the picture below. If you do not set this you will get an IOException error when running the completed project with a message along the lines of “Cannot locate resource ‘window.xaml’ You then need to tie everything up by putting the correct F# code in the Program.fs to load the xaml window. In the Program.fs put the following code… module Program open System open System.Collections.ObjectModel open System.IO open System.Windows open System.Windows.Controls open System.Windows.Markup [<STAThread>] [<EntryPoint>] let main(_) = let w = Application.LoadComponent(new System.Uri("/FSharpWPF;component/Window.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)) :?> Window (new Application()).Run(w) Once all this is done you should be able to build and run your project. What you have done is created a WPF based window inside a FSharp project. It should look something like below…   Nothing to exciting, but sufficient to illustrate the very basic WPF form in F#. Hopefully in future posts I will build on this to expose button events etc.

• How can I expire non-active sessions on my Netscreen SSG140?

  I have a Juniper Netscreen SSG-140. While experimenting with a VoIP service, I defined a custom policy that was to be used to permit the possible ports in use to be sent back to the VoIP server from systems connecting across the internet. Because I'd had problems in the past with VoIP systems getting broken when their UDP sessions were expired out faster than their keep-alives were generated, I set the timeout on this custom service to be 'never'. After much experimentation, I happened to notice that my session count on the firewall has grown from a couple thousand to over 36000. After discussion with the VoIP "expert", I set the timeout to be 30 minutes; however, all the sessions set up during the experimentation process are still there, more than 3 days later. Is there a way I can force these old sessions to get expired and removed from the session table, or am I looking at resetting my firewall? (Both firewalls, actually -- they are in a cluster.)

• How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

  I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.

• New router, old network, but devices won't talk to each other

  I plugged the new router in and get internet on both the computer and the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 only recognizes the computer when I turn the Smart Wall off in my Norton antivirus, and only when the computer is hardwired. How do I make it so that Norton will allow the computer and Xbox to talk? Reset the MAC address? I have no idea how to do this, and I'm starting to think it's the answer to my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  We have a RHEL5 Linux Server with few Windows XP client boxes. Using Samba server for share files between systems. My server working well in all systems but one Windows XP machine didn't connect to server. Here i give some screen shots for clear idea, For Check network connection i use ping, It working well. I use above way for connect to server. For all other systems it working well. I am getting error message like this. ** I am using squid for proxy in Linux, For me internet also working well in that Windows XP system. ** I Deleted stored user name and password for samba in windows XP. Help me to solve this problem.
