  • Are there programs that iteratively write new programs?

    - by chris
    For about a year I have been thinking about writing a program that writes programs. This would primarily be a playful exercise that might teach me some new concepts. My inspiration came from negentropy and the ability for order to emerge from chaos and new chaos to arise out of order in infinite succession. To be more specific, the program would start by writing a short random string. If the string compiles the programs will log it for later comparison. If the string does not compile the program will try to rewrite it until it does compile. As more strings (mini 'useless' programs) are logged they can be parsed for similarities and used to generate a grammar. This grammar can then be drawn on to write more strings that have a higher probability of compilation than purely random strings. This is obviously more than a little silly, but I thought it would be fun to try and grow a program like this. And as a byproduct I get a bunch of unique programs that I can visualize and call art. I'll probably write this in Ruby due to its simple syntax and dynamic compilation and then I will visualize in processing using ruby-processing. What I would like to know is: Is there a name for this type of programming? What currently exists in this field? Who are the primary contributors? BONUS! - In what ways can I procedurally assign value to output programs beyond compiles(y/n)? I may want to extend the functionality of this program to generate a program based on parameters, but I want the program to define those parameters through running the programs that compile and assigning meaning to the programs output. This question is probably more involved than reasonable for a bonus, but if you can think of a simple way to get something like this done in less than 23 lines or one hyperlink, please toss it into your response. I know that this is not quite meta-programming and from the little I know of AI and generative algorithms they are usually more goal oriented than what I am thinking. What would be optimal is a program that continually rewrites and improves itself so I don't have to ^_^

  • linq NullReferenceException while checking for null reference

    - by Odrade
    I have the following LINQ query: List<FileInputItem> inputList = GetInputList(); var results = from FileInputItem f in inputList where ( Path.GetDirectoryName(f.Folder).ToLower().Trim() == somePath || Path.GetDirectoryName(f.Folder).ToLower().Trim() == someOtherPath ) && f.Expression == null select f; Every time this query is executed, it generates a NullReferenceException. If I remove the condition f.Expression == null or change it to f.Expression != null, the query executes normally (giving the wrong results, of course). The relevant bits of FileInputItem look like this: [Serializable] public class FileInputItem { [XmlElement("Folder")] public string Folder { get; set; } [XmlElement("Expression")] public string Expression { get; set; } /*SNIP. Irrelevant properties */ } I'm new to LINQ to objects, so I'm probably missing something fundamental here. What's the deal?

  • Consume restful webservice through web proxy

    - by Chico
    Hello, I'm trying to consume a restful webservice in java using the Apache Wink framework through my school web proxy requiring authentification ClientConfig clientConfig = new ClientConfig(); clientConfig.proxyHost("proxy.school.com"); clientConfig.proxyPort(3128); //nothing to set username and password :( RestClient client = new RestClient(clientConfig); Resource resource = client.resource("http://vimeo.com/api/v2/artist/videos.xml"); String response = resource.accept("text/plain").get(String.class); I've also tried to use the BasicAuthSecurityHandler but it seems to be used to authenticate directly to a web server, not the web proxy BasicAuthSecurityHandler basicAuthHandler = new BasicAuthSecurityHandler(); basicAuthHandler.setUserName("username"); basicAuthHandler.setPassword("password"); config.handlers(basicAuthHandler); It still fail with a HTTP 407 error code : Proxy Authentication Required. I've googled the best I could, nothing came up better to consume a webservice from a Java client through a web proxy, if someone has another idea, feel free to respond

  • How can custom properties be added to a column in Doctrine

    - by murze
    With doctrine if you execute this code $columns = $accountTable->getColumns(); foreach ($columns as $column) { print_r($column); } you could get for example this as result: Array ( [type] => integer [length] => 20 [autoincrement] => 1 [primary] => 1 ) Array ( [type] => string [length] => 255 ) Is there a way to add custom properties to a column, so that the result would be: Array ( [type] => integer [length] => 20 [autoincrement] => 1 [primary] => 1 [customproperty] => customvalue ) Array ( [type] => string [length] => 255 )

  • Combine Hibernate class with @Bindable for SwingBuilder without Griffon?

    - by Misha Koshelev
    Dear All: I have implemented a back-end for my application in Groovy/Gradle, and am now trying to implement a GUI. I am using Hibernate for my data storage (with HSQLDB) per http://groovy.codehaus.org/Using+Hibernate+with+Groovy (with Jasypt for encryption) and it is working quite well. I was wondering if there are any good tips for using @Bindable with, e.g., an @Entity class such as @Entity class Book { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) public Long id @OneToMany(cascade=CascadeType.ALL) public Set<Author> authors public String title String toString() { "$title by ${authors.name.join(', ')}" } } or if I am: (i) asking for Griffon (ii) completely on the wrong track? Thank you! Misha

  • When is a scala partial function not a partial function?

    - by Fred Haslam
    While creating a map of String to partial functions I ran into unexpected behavior. When I create a partial function as a map element it works fine. When I allocate to a val it invokes instead. Trying to invoke the check generates an error. Is this expected? Am I doing something dumb? Comment out the check() to see the invocation. I am using scala 2.7.7 def PartialFunctionProblem() = { def dream()() = { println("~Dream~"); new Exception().printStackTrace() } val map = scala.collection.mutable.HashMap[String,()=>Unit]() map("dream") = dream() // partial function map("dream")() // invokes as expected val check = dream() // unexpected invocation check() // error: check of type Unit does not take parameters }

  • Paypal - DoExpressCheckoutPayment null pointer

    - by user969894
    String nvpstr = "&TOKEN=" + token + "&PAYERID=" + payerID + "&PAYMENTREQUEST_0_PAYMENTACTION=" + paymentType + "&PAYMENTREQUEST_0_AMT=" + finalPaymentAmount + "&PAYMENTREQUEST_0_CURRENCYCODE=" + currencyCodeType + "&IPADDRESS=" + serverName; Having done an earlier call to SetExpressCheckout, I had to change a few parameter names because Paypal had changed it in the documentation but not in the code from the integration wizard. Now for DoExpressCheckoutPayment I've modified a few but I get a null pointer at strAck: HashMap nvp = httpcall("DoExpressCheckoutPayment", nvpstr); String strAck = nvp.get("ACK").toString(); if (strAck.equalsIgnoreCase("Success")) { return nvp; } Not sure what is wrong, any suggestions for debugging this or possible solutions?

  • set variables in an MVC application?

    - by Melissa
    I am trying to learn about the Orchard MVC application. I see the following code but cannot understand what it is doing. Can someone explain what this: User.As<UserPart>().Record.UserName = value; means? public class UserEditViewModel { [Required] public string UserName { get { return User.As<UserPart>().Record.UserName; } set { User.As<UserPart>().Record.UserName = value; } } [Required] public string Email { get { return User.As<UserPart>().Record.Email; } set { User.As<UserPart>().Record.Email = value; } } public IContent User { get; set; } }

  • Iphone -- init method of an abstract class

    - by William Jockusch
    I want to create classes Car, Vehicle, and Airplane with the following properties: Car and Airplane are both subclasses of Vehicle. Car and Airplane both have an initWithString method. The acceptable input strings for Car's and Airplane's initWithString methods do not overlap. Vehicle is "almost abstract", in the sense that any initialized instance should be either a Car or an Airplane. It is possible to pass a string into Vehicle and get back an instance of Car, an instance of Airplane, or nil, depending on the input string. Any particular design pattern I should prefer? In particular for Vehicle's initWithString and/or newVehicleWithString methods.

  • Android listview array adapter selected

    - by João Melo
    i'm trying to add a contextual action mode to a listview, but i'm having some problems with the selection, if i make aList1.setSelection(position) it doesn't select anything, and if i make List1.setItemChecked(position, true) it works but it only changes the font color a little and i want it to change the background or something more notable, is there any way to detect the selection and manually and change the background, or i'm missing something? the list: <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" > <ListView android:id="@+id/list1" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:choiceMode="singleChoice" android:drawSelectorOnTop="false"> </ListView> </RelativeLayout> the adapter: public class ServicesRowAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<String[]> { private final Activity context; private final ArrayList<String[]> names; static class ViewHolder { public TextView Id; public TextView Date; public RelativeLayout statusbar,bglayout; } public ServicesRowAdapter(Activity context, ArrayList<String[]> names) { super(context, R.layout.servicesrowlayout, names); this.context = context; this.names = names; } @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View rowView = convertView; if (rowView == null) { LayoutInflater inflater = context.getLayoutInflater(); rowView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.servicesrowlayout, null); ViewHolder viewHolder = new ViewHolder(); viewHolder.Id = (TextView) rowView.findViewById(R.id.idlabel); viewHolder.Date = (TextView) rowView.findViewById(R.id.datelabel); rowView.setTag(viewHolder); } ViewHolder holder = (ViewHolder) rowView.getTag(); holder.Date.setText(names.get(position)[2]); holder.Id.setText(names.get(position)[1]); return rowView; } } with the use of a layout: <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" > <TextView android:id="@+id/idlabel" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:gravity="right" android:text="@+id/idlabel" android:textSize="20dp" android:width="70dp" > </TextView> <TextView android:id="@+id/datelabel" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@+id/datelabel" android:textSize="20dp" android:layout_marginLeft="90dp" > </TextView> </RelativeLayout

  • Passing a parameter in the header (XML RPC)

    - by fudgey
    I'm trying to set up a server status for the MMORPG Champions Online. I got some basic information from the web master and this is all he told me: XML-RPC call to server: http://www.champions-online.com/xmlrpc.php function name: wgsLauncher.getServerStatus Parameter (language): en-US Now, I found a nice example to start with here, and I ended up with this code: <?php ini_set('display_errors', 1); error_reporting(E_ALL); # Using the XML-RPC extension to format the XML package $request = xmlrpc_encode_request("wgsLauncher.getServerStatus", "<param><value><string>en-US</string></value></param>", null ); # Using the cURL extension to send it off, # first creating a custom header block $header[] = "Host: http://www.champions-online.com:80/"; $header[] = "Content-type: text/xml"; $header[] = "Content-length: ".strlen($request) . "\r\n"; $header[] = $request; $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt( $ch, CURLOPT_URL, "http://www.champions-online.com/xmlrpc.php"); # URL to post to curl_setopt( $ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1 ); # return into a variable curl_setopt( $ch, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, $header ); # custom headers, see above curl_setopt( $ch, CURLOPT_CUSTOMREQUEST, 'POST' ); # This POST is special, and uses its specified Content-type $result = curl_exec( $ch ); # run! curl_close($ch); echo $result; ?> But I'm getting a "400 Bad Request" error. I'm new to XML RPC and I barely know php, so I'm at a loss. The examples from the php site show how to use an array as a parameter, but nothing else. I obtained the parameter string <param><value><string>en-US</string></value></param> from this XMLRPC Debugger (very nice btw). I entered the parameter I needed in the "payload" box and this was the output. So, I would appreciate any help on how to pass this parameter to the header. Note: My host supports xmlrpc but it seems the function "xmlrpc_client" doesn't exist. Update: The web master replied with this information, but it's still not working... it's getting to the point I may just scrape the status off the page. $request = xmlrpc_encode_request("wgsLauncher.getServerStatus", "en-US" );

  • How to prevent direct access to my JSON service?

    - by FrankLy
    I have a JSON web service to return home markers to be displayed on my Google Map. Essentially, http://example.com calls the web service to find out the location of all map markers to display like so: http://example.com/json/?zipcode=12345 And it returns a JSON string such as: {"address": "321 Main St, Mountain View, CA, USA", ...} So on my index.html page, I take that JSON string and place the map markers. However, what I don't want to have happen is people calling out to my JSON web service directly. I only want http://example.com/index.html to be able to call my http://example.com/json/ web service ... and not some random dude calling the /json/ directly. Quesiton: how do I prevent direct calling/access to my http://example.com/json/ web service?

  • SQLAlchemy - how to map against a read-only (or calculated) property

    - by Jeff Peck
    I'm trying to figure out how to map against a simple read-only property and have that property fire when I save to the database. A contrived example should make this more clear. First, a simple table: meta = MetaData() foo_table = Table('foo', meta, Column('id', String(3), primary_key=True), Column('description', String(64), nullable=False), Column('calculated_value', Integer, nullable=False), ) What I want to do is set up a class with a read-only property that will insert into the calculated_value column for me when I call session.commit()... import datetime def Foo(object): def __init__(self, id, description): self.id = id self.description = description @property def calculated_value(self): self._calculated_value = datetime.datetime.now().second + 10 return self._calculated_value According to the sqlalchemy docs, I think I am supposed to map this like so: mapper(Foo, foo_table, properties = { 'calculated_value' : synonym('_calculated_value', map_column=True) }) The problem with this is that _calculated_value is None until you access the calculated_value property. It appears that SQLAlchemy is not calling the property on insertion into the database, so I'm getting a None value instead. What is the correct way to map this so that the result of the "calculated_value" property is inserted into the foo table's "calculated_value" column?

  • GCJ Creates duplicate dummy symbol

    - by vickirk
    Hi, I'm trying to build a java application with gcj but getting the error below. multiple definition of `java resource .dummy' gcj versions are 4.4.1 on Ubuntu and 4.3.4 on cygwin/windows XP and I'm building it with gcj --main=my.MainClass --classpath=my my/*java Anyone seen this or know a workaround without installing an earlier version of gcj. If that is the way to do it does anyone know how to do that on cygwin or will I have to build it? Here is a minimal test case that gives this error public class A { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(new B()); } } public class B { public String toString() { return "Hello"; } } gcj --main=A src/A.java src/B.java

  • Map the physical file path in asp.net mvc

    - by rmassart
    Hi, I am trying to read an XSLT file from disk in my ASP.Net MVC controller. What I am doing is the following: string filepath = HttpContext.Request.PhysicalApplicationPath; filepath += "/Content/Xsl/pubmed.xslt"; string xsl = System.IO.File.ReadAllText(filepath); However, half way down this thread on forums.asp.net there is the following quote HttpContext.Current is evil and if you use it anywhere in your mvc app you are doing something wrong because you do not need it. Whilst I am not using "Current", I am wondering what is the best way to determine the absolute physical path of a file in MVC? For some reason (I don't know why!) HttpContext doesn't feel right for me. Is there a better (or recommended/best practice) way of reading files from disk in ASP.Net MVC? Thanks for your help, Robin

  • What is the "Dispatcher" design pattern?

    - by Ben Farmer
    What is the "dispatcher" pattern and how would I implement it in code? I have a property bag of generic objects and would like to have the retrieval delegated to a generic method. Currently, I have properties looking for a specific key in the bag. For example: private Dictionary<String, Object> Foo { get; set; } private const String WidgetKey = "WIDGETKEY"; public Widget? WidgetItem { get { return Foo.ContainsKey(WidgetKey) ? Foo[WidgetKey] as Widget: null; } set { if (Foo.ContainsKey(WidgetKey)) Foo[WidgetKey] = value; else Foo.Add(WidgetKey, value); } } It was suggested that this could be more generic with the "dispatcher" pattern, but I've been unable to find a good description or example. I'm looking for a more generic way to handle the property bag store/retrieve.

  • Avoiding dispose of underlying stream

    - by danbystrom
    I'm attempting to mock some file operations. In the "real" object I have: StreamWriter createFile( string name ) { return new StreamWriter( Path.Combine( _outFolder, name ), false, Encoding.UTF8 ) ); } In the mock object I'd like to have: StreamWriter createFile( string name ) { var ms = new MemoryStream(); _files.Add( Path.Combine( _outFolder, name ), ms ); return new StreamWriter( ms, Encoding.UTF8 ) ); } where _files is a dictionary to store created files for later inspection. However, when the consumer closes the StreamWriter, it also disposes the MeamoryStream... :-( Any thoughts on how to pursue this?

  • Use the [Serializable] attribute or subclassing from MarshalByRefObject?

    - by Theo Lenndorff
    I'd like to use an object across AppDomains. For this I can use the [Serializeable] attribute: [Serializable] class MyClass { public string GetSomeString() { return "someString" } } Or subclass from MarshalByRefObject: class MyClass: MarshalByRefObject { public string GetSomeString() { return "someString" } } In both cases I can use the class like this: AppDomain appDomain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("AppDomain"); MyClass myObject = (MyClass)appDomain.CreateInstanceAndUnwrap( typeof(MyClass).Assembly.FullName, typeof(MyClass).FullName); Console.WriteLine(myObject.GetSomeString()); Why do both approaches seem to have the same effect? What is the difference in both approaches? When should I favor the one approach over the other? EDIT: At the surface I know that there are differences between both mechanisms, but if someone jumped out of a bush and asked me the question I couldn't give him a proper answer. The questions are quite open questions. I hoped that someone can explain it better than I could do.

  • VB.NET, make a function with return type generic ?

    Currently I have written a function to deserialize XML as seen below. How do I change it so I don't have to replace the type every time I want to serialize another object type ? • Use boost date_time to parse and create HTTP-dates

    - by John Price
    I'm writing a kind of HTTP proxy, so I need to be able to do 3 things: Parse an HTTP-date given any of the 3 formats specified in RFC 2616, sec 3.3, Convert a file date-time to an HTTP-date string, and Output the date to a string. For reference, theses are examples of the date-times I need to parse. I will output only the first format: Sun, 06 Nov 1994 08:49:37 GMT ; RFC 822, updated by RFC 1123 Sunday, 06-Nov-94 08:49:37 GMT ; RFC 850, obsoleted by RFC 1036 Sun Nov 6 08:49:37 1994 ; ANSI C's asctime() format I'm pretty sure Boost date_time can do all of this, but I'm having some trouble with number 1. Does anyone already have code to do this? Perhaps I'm not using google proficiently, but I can't find an example of how to do this with boost anywhere. Thanks for any help!

  • Calling 32 bit unmanaged dlls from C# randomly failing

    - by Bert
    Hi, I'm having an issue when calling 32 bit delphi dll's from c# web site. The code generally runs fine, but occasionally I get an error Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). This issue persists until I recycle the app pool for the site, and then it works fine again. On the same server, there is also a web service that is calling the same set of dlls. This web service doesn't seem to have the same issue that the web site has. Both applications are using .net framework 3.5, separate app pools on IIS. Here is the code I'm using to wrap the dlls: public sealed class Mapper { static Mapper instance = null; [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] private static extern bool SetDllDirectory(string lpPathName); private Mapper() { SetDllDirectory(ConfigManager.Path); } public static Mapper Instance { get { if (instance == null) { instance = new Mapper(); } return instance; } } public int Foo(string bar, ref double val) { return Loader.Foo(bar, ref val); } } public static class Loader { [DllImport("some.dll", CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall, CharSet = CharSet.Unicode, EntryPoint = "foo")] public static extern int Foo(string bar, ref double val); } Then I call it like this: double val = 0.0; Mapper.Instance.Foo("bar", ref val); Any ideas as to why it would "randomly" Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). The other problem is that I haven't been able to replicate the issue in the development environment. I thought that due to 2 applications calling the same dlls, that there could be some locks occurring. To replicate this, I created an app that spawned multiple threads and repeatedly called the 32bit dlls, and then used the web site to call these same dlls. I still couldn't replicate the issue. Some possible fixes that I can think of: Wrap the 32 bit dlls in web service (because the webservice doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem). But this may be worthless if it turns out that the web service also fails. Set up state server for the session state and periodically recycle the app pool for the site.This isn't fixing the problem, only avoiding it. Wrap the dll's in exe, and call that exe. Then I shouldn't get the same issue. But this also seems like a hacky solution. Implement the mapper class differently ? But how else should I be doing the call? The other draw back is that other applications are using this mapper, so I'd need to change there code too. Thanks
