• Can anyone simplify this Algorithm for me?

  Basically I just want to check if one time period overlaps with another. Null end date means till infinity. Can anyone shorten this for me as its quite hard to read at times. • SQL Selects on subsets

  I need to check if a row exists in a database; however, I am trying to find the way to do this that offers the best performance. This is best summarised with an example. Let's assume I have the following table: dbo.Person( FirstName varchar(50), LastName varchar(50), Company varchar(50) ) Assume this table has millions of rows, however ONLY the column Company has an index. I want to find out if a particular combination of FirstName, LastName and Company exists. I know I can do this: IF EXISTS(select 1 from dbo.Person where FirstName = @FirstName and LastName = @LastName and Company = @Company) Begin .... End However, unless I'm mistaken, that will do a full table scan. What I'd really like it to do is a query where it utilises the index. With the table above, I know that the following query will have great performance, since it uses the index: Select * from dbo.Person where Company = @Company Is there anyway to make the search only on that subset of data? e.g. something like this: select * from ( Select * from dbo.Person where Company = @Company ) where FirstName = @FirstName and LastName = @LastName That way, it would only be doing a table scan on a much narrower collection of data. I know the query above won't work, but is there a query that would? Oh, and I am unable to create temporary tables, as the user will only have read access.

• Dumping an ADODB recordset to XML, then back to a recordset, then saving to the db

  I've created an XML file using the .Save() method of an ADODB recordset in the following manner. dim res dim objXML: Set objXML = Server.CreateObject("MSXML2.DOMDocument") 'This returns an ADODB recordset set res = ExecuteReader("SELECT * from some_table) With res Call .Save(objXML, 1) Call .Close() End With Set res = nothing Let's assume that the XML generated above then gets saved to a file. I'm able to read the XML back into a recordset like this: dim res : set res = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.recordset") res.open server.mappath("/admin/tbl_some_table.xml") And I can loop over the records without any problem. However what I really want to do is save all of the data in res to a table in a completely different database. We can assume that some_table already exists in this other database and has the exact same structure as the table I originally queried to make the XML. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or suggest a better way for me to copy the data loaded from XML to a different database?

• jQuery validation plugin - removing elements

  I'm using the jQuery validation plugin. On most of my input type... tags I have class='required'. When I submit the page, via JavaScript, the controls on the page that have this class are found. However, there are a handful of checkboxes that I don't need to validate. I've tried removing the class code completely from the input tag, also tried class='cancel', and class='required:false. When doing any of those things though when the form submits it can't find the checkbox control. How do I still keep the ability to do Request.Form and find my checkbox object but at the same time when the form submits don't apply validation to this particular control. Thank you. Edit here. This is what I'm using without the "checked" code and ternary operator. • Checking data of all same class elements

  I need the code to check the data-name value of all instances of .account-select. Right now it just checks the first .account-select element and not any subsequent ones. The function right now is on click of an element such as John Smith, it checks the data-name of the .account-select lis. If the data-names are the same, it does not create a new li with the John Smith data. If no data-names are equal to John Smith, then it adds an li with John Smith.   I'm working on an ASP.NET project in which the vast majority of the forms are generated dynamically at run time (form definitions are stored in a DB for customizability). Therefore, I have to dynamically create and add my controls to the Page every time OnLoad fires, regardless of IsPostBack. This has been working just fine and .NET takes care of managing ViewState for these controls. protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { base.OnLoad(e); RenderDynamicControls() } private void RenderDynamicControls(){ //1. call service layer to retrieve form definition //2. create and add controls to page container } I have a new requirement in which if a user clicks on a given button (this button is created at design time) the page should be re-rendered in a slightly different way. So in addition to the code that executes in OnLoad (i.e. RenderDynamicControls()), I have this code: protected void MyButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() } private void RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() (){ //1. clear all controls from the page container added in RenderDynamicControls() //2. call service layer to retrieve form definition //3. create and add controls to page container } My question is, is this really the only way to accomplish what I'm after? It seems beyond hacky to effectively render the form twice simply to respond to a button click. I gather from my research that this is simply how the page-lifecycle works in ASP.NET: Namely, that OnLoad must fire on every Postback before child events are invoked. Still, it's worthwhile to check with the SO community before having to drink the kool-aid. On a related note, once I get this feature completed, I'm planning on throwing an UpdatePanel on the page to perform the page updates via Ajax. • Copy a multi-dimentional array by Value (not by reference) in PHP.

  Language: PHP I have a form which asks users for their educational details, course details and technical details. When the form is submitted the page goes to a different page to run processes on the information and save parts to a database. HOWEVER(!) I then need to return the page back to the original page, where having access to the original post information is needed. I thought it would be simple to copy (by value) the multi-dimensional (md) $_POST array to $_SESSION['post'] session_start(); $_SESSION['post'] = $_POST; However this only appears to place the top level of the array into $_SESSION['post'] not doing anything with the children/sub-arrays. An abbreviated form of the md $_POST array is as follows: Array ( [formid] = 2 [edu] = Array ( ['id'] = Array ( [1] = new_1 [2] = new_2 ) ['nameOfInstitution'] = Array ( [1] = 1 [2] = 2 ) ['qualification'] = Array ( [1] = blah [2] = blah ) ['grade'] = Array ( [1] = blah [2] = blah ) ) [vID] = 61 [Submit] = Save and Continue ) If I echo $_SESSION['post']['formid'] it writes "2", and if I echo $_SESSION['post']['edu'] it returns "Array". If I check that edu is an array (is_array($_SESSION['post']['edu])) it returns true. If I echo $_SESSION['post']['edu']['id'] it returns array, but when checked (is_array($_SESSION['post']['edu]['id'])) it returns false and I cannot echo out any of the elements. How do I successfully copy (by value, not by reference) the whole array (including its children) to an new array?

  Hello, I kind of stuck on how to implement this query - this is pretty similar to the query I posted earlier but I'm not able to crack it. I have a shopping table where everytime a user buys anything, a record is inserted. Some of the fields are * shopping_id (primary key) * store_id * user_id Now what I need is to pull only the list of those stores where he's among the top 5 visitors: When I break it down - this is what I want to accomplish: * Find all stores where this UserA has visited * For each of these stores - see who the top 5 visitors are. * Select the store only if UserA is among the top 5 visitors. The corresponding queries would be: select store_id from shopping where user_id = xxx select user_id,count(*) as 'visits' from shopping where store_id in (select store_id from shopping where user_id = xxx) group by user_id order by visits desc limit 5 Now I need to check in this resultset if UserA is present and select that store only if he's present. For example if he has visited a store 5 times - but if there are 5 or more people who have visited that store more than 5 times - then that store should not be selected. So I'm kind of lost here. • How can I automatically release resources RAII-style in Perl?

  Say I have a resource (e.g. a filehandle or network socket) which has to be freed: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; process($fh); close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; Suppose that process might die. Then the code block exits early, and $fh doesn't get closed. I could explicitly check for errors: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; eval {process($fh)}; my $saved_error = $@; close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; die $saved_error if $saved_error; but this kind of code is notoriously difficult to get right, and only gets more complicated when you add more resources. In C++ I would use RAII to create an object which owns the resource, and whose destructor would free it. That way, I don't have to remember to free the resource, and resource cleanup happens correctly as soon as the RAII object goes out of scope - even if an exception is thrown. Unfortunately in Perl a DESTROY method is unsuitable for this purpose as there are no guarantees for when it will be called. Is there a Perlish way to ensure resources are automatically freed like this even in the presence of exceptions? Or is explicit error checking the only option?

• Multiple threads modifying a collection in Java??

  Hi, The project I am working on requires a whole bunch of queries towards a database. In principle there are two types of queries I am using: read from excel file, check for a couple of parameters and do a query for hits in the database. These hits are then registered as a series of custom classes. Any hit may (and most likely will) occur more than once so this part of the code checks and updates the occurrence in a custom list implementation that extends ArrayList. for each hit found, do a detail query and parse the output, so that the classes created in (I) get detailed info. I figured I would use multiple threads to optimize time-wise. However I can't really come up with a good way to solve the problem that occurs with the collection these items are stored in. To elaborate a little bit; throughout the execution objects are supposed to be modified by both (I) and (II). I deliberately didn't c/p any code, as it would be big chunks of code to make any sense.. I hope it make some sense with the description above. Thanks,

I run it for the numbers of iterations in miter and then get the final weight at the end. However, I'm not sure what to do with this weight. I've trained the perceptron and now I have to classify a set of tweets, but I don't know how to do that. EDIT: Specifically, what I do in my classify method is I go through and create a feature vector for the data I'm given, which isn't a problem at all, and then I take the self._learnedWeight that I get from the earlier training code and compute the dot-product of the vector and the weight. My weight and feature vectors include a bias in the 0th term of the list so I'm including that. I then check to see if the dotproduct is less than or equal to 0: if so, then I classify it as -1. Otherwise, it's 1. However, this doesn't seem to be working correctly.

• 2 different routes on one page?

  Hi I'm pretty new with MVC2 or MVC in general. If it's one thing I get caught up with it's routes. Like now I got this scenario. Im going from the regular site to Admin. The navigation tho dont get no action assigned to it. It's just <a href='Admin/'> The navigation is in the shared folder, and it is a strongly typed. Any Ideas? • C# TcpClient, getting back the entire response from a telnet device

  I'm writing a configuration tool for a device that can communicate via telnet. The tool sends a command via TcpClient.GetStream().Write(...), and then checks for the device response via TcpClient.GetStream().ReadByte(). This works fine in unit tests or when I'm stepping through code slowly. If I run the config tool such that it performs multiple commands consecutively, then the behavior of the read is inconsistent. By inconsistent I mean sometimes the data is missing, incomplete or partially garbled. So even though the device performed the operation and responded, my code to check for the response was unreliable. I "fixed" this problem by adding a Thread.Sleep to make sure the read method waits long enough for the device to complete its job and send back the whole response (in this case 1.5 seconds was a safe amount). • Need help writing jQuery to loop through table and inject markers into google map?

  I am new to jQuery. I've done some simple things with it but what I am attempting now is a over my head and I need some help. I am building a locator for all the firearms dealers in the US for a client. I am working within Drupal. I have a proximity search by zip code that works great. If you search by zip a list of paginated results shows up in an html table that can by paged through via ajax. I would like a map to be above this list with markers corresponding to the names and addresses being listed. I already have all the lat and long values in the table results. I want the script to update the markers and automatically zoom to fit the markers in the view when a user changes the sort order of the table or pages through the results. Also, I'd like to have a hover highlight effect over the rows of the table that simultaneously highlight the corresponding marker, and have a click on the table row equal a click on a marker that pops up a marker info window to be populated using jQuery to read the name and address fields of the table. Hope this all makes sense. I know I'm putting a lot out there, I'm not asking for someone to write the whole script, just wanted to give as many details as possible. Thanks for any help. • Quartz.Net scheduler works locally but not on remote host

  Hi. I have a timed quartz.net job working fine on my dev machine, but once deployed to a remote server it is not triggering. I believe the job is scheduled ok, because if I postback, it tells me the job already exists (I normally check for postback however). The email code definitely works, as the 'button1_click' event sends emails successfully. I understand I have full or medium trust on the remove server. My host says they don't apply restrictions that they know of which would affect it. • password validator using RegExp in Flex

  I have seen several examples in Flex for passowrd validator using RegExp. But every where the validation is happend for single validation. I have a requirement, like password validations like • At least one Upper case letter • At least one numeric character • At least one special character such as @, #, $, etc. • At least one Lower case letter • password lenght minimum 6 digits • password cannot be same as user name Can anyone provide me a code for this..? I have the code only for checking the password is valid or not . check the below code. • SEO: Where do I start?

  Hi, I am primarily a software developer however I tend to delve in some web development from time to time. I have recently been asked to have a look at a friends website as they are wanting to improve their position in search engine results i.e. google/yahoo etc. I am aware there is no guarentee that their position will change, however, I do know there are techniques/ways to make your website more visible to search engine spiders and to consequently improve your position in the rankings i.e. performing SEO. Before I started looking at the SEO of the site I did the following prerequsite checks: Ran the website through the W3C Markup Validator and the W3C CSS Validator services. Looked through the markup code manually (check for meta tags etc) Performed a thorough cross browser compatibility test. From those checks, the following was evident: No SEO has been performed on the site before. The website has been developed using a visual editing tool such as dreamweaver (as it failed the validation services miserably and tables where being used everywhere!) The site is fairly cross browser compatibile (only some slight issues with IE8 which are easily resolved). How the site navigation is, isn't very search engine friendly (e.g. index.php?page=home) I can see right away a major improvement for SEO (or I at least think) would be to change the way the website is structured i.e. change from using dynamic pages such as "index.php?page=home" and actually having pages called "home.html". Other area's would be to add meta tags to identify keywords, and then sprinkling these keywords over the pages. As I am a rookie in this department, could anyone give me some advice on how I could perform thorough SEO on this website? Thanks in advance.

• Generating lognormally distributed random number from mean, coeff of variation

  Most functions for generating lognormally distributed random numbers take the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution as parameters. My problem is that I only know the mean and the coefficient of variation of the lognormal distribution. It is reasonably straight forward to derive the parameters I need for the standard functions from what I have: If mu and sigma are the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution, we know that coeffOfVar^2 = variance / mean^2 = (exp(sigma^2) - 1) * exp(2*mu + sigma^2) / exp(mu + sigma^2/2)^2 = exp(sigma^2) - 1 We can rearrange this to sigma = sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) We also know that mean = exp(mu + sigma^2/2) This rearranges to mu = log(mean) - sigma^2/2 Here's my R implementation rlnorm0 <- function(mean, coeffOfVar, n = 1e6) { sigma <- sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) mu <- log(mean) - sigma^2 / 2 rlnorm(n, mu, sigma) } It works okay for small coefficients of variation r1 <- rlnorm0(2, 0.5) mean(r1) # 2.000095 sd(r1) / mean(r1) # 0.4998437 But not for larger values r2 <- rlnorm0(2, 50) mean(r2) # 2.048509 sd(r2) / mean(r2) # 68.55871 To check that it wasn't an R-specific issue, I reimplemented it in MATLAB. • How do I stop ValueConverters from firing when swapping the content of a ContentControl

  I thought what I was doing was right out of the Josh Smith MVVM handbook, but I seem to be having a lot of problems with value converters firing when no data in the view-model has changed. So, I have a ContentControl defined in XAML like this: <ContentControl Grid.Row="0" Content="{Binding CurrentViewModel}" /> The Window containing this ContentControl references a resource dictionary that looks something like this: <ResourceDictionary ...> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:SetupPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:SetupPanel /> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:InstructionsPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:InstructionsPanel /> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> So, basically, the two data templates specify which view to show with which view-model. This switches the views as expected whenever the CurrentViewModel property on my window's view-model changes, but it also seems to cause value converters on the views to fire even when no data has changed. It's a particular problem with IMultiValueConverter classes, because the values in the value array get set to DependencyProperty.UnsetValue, which causes exceptions unless I specifically check for that. But I'm getting other weird side effects too. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just do everything manually, like this: Instantiate each view. Set the DataContext of each view to the appropriate view-model. Give the ContentControl a name and make it public. Handle the PropertyChanged event for the window. In the event handler, manually set the Content property of the ContentControl to the appropriate view, based the CurrentViewModel (using if statements). This seems to work, but it also seems very inelegant. I'm hoping there's a better way. Could you please advise me the best way to handle view switching so that value converters don't fire unnecessarily?
