• Expandable paragraphs with HTML and CSS

  I was wondering if anyone here would be as so kind as to help me out a bit. I am looking to make expandable paragraphs for my client's website. They would like to keep all of the content from their site, which is pretty massive, and they want a total overhaul of the design. They mainly wan tot keep it for SEO purposes. Anyhow, I thought it would be helpful for the both of use if there is some way to use expandable paragraphs, you know, with a "read more..." link after a certain line of text. I know that there are some JQuery and Java solutions for this, but we really would like to stay away from those options, if at all possible. When would like HTML and CSS, if we can. Here is kind of an example: HEADING HERE Paragraph with a bunch of text. I would like this to appear in a pre-determined line. For example, maybe the start of the paragraph goes on for, let's say, three lines and then we have the [read more...] When the visitor clicks "read more", we would like the rest of the content to just expand to reveal the article in its entirety. I would like for the content to already be on the page, so it just expands. I don't want it to be called in from another file or anything, if that makes sense.   I'm new to PHP and MySQL and I'm trying to store a users entered data from the following fields $skill, $experience, $years which a user can also add additional fields of $skill, $experience, $years if needed so in instead of 1 of each field there might be multiples of each field. • How can I efficiently manipulate 500k records in SQL Server 2005?

  I am getting a large text file of updated information from a customer that contains updates for 500,000 users. However, as I am processing this file, I often am running into SQL Server timeout errors. Here's the process I follow in my VB application that processes the data (in general): Delete all records from temporary table (to remove last month's data) (eg. DELETE * FROM tempTable) Rip text file into the temp table Fill in extra information into the temp table, such as their organization_id, their user_id, group_code, etc. Update the data in the real tables based on the data computed in the temp table The problem is that I often run commands like UPDATE tempTable SET user_id = (SELECT user_id FROM myUsers WHERE external_id = tempTable.external_id) and these commands frequently time out. I have tried bumping the timeouts up to as far as 10 minutes, but they still fail. Now, I realize that 500k rows is no small number of rows to manipulate, but I would think that a database purported to be able to handle millions and millions of rows should be able to cope with 500k pretty easily. Am I doing something wrong with how I am going about processing this data? Please help. Any and all suggestions welcome.

• form target iframe not working in IE7- in facebook fan tab

  This issue is similar to the one discussed in this thread, only mine is in a Facebook fan page tab (FBML/FBJS). The fix described in the referenced question works fine outside of Facebook, but for whatever reason I can't get it to work in the posted FBJS.   I have a single line of code, that consumes 25% - 30% of the runtime of my application. It is a less-than comparator for an std::set (the set is implemented with a Red-Black-Tree). I have many insertions for each extraction of the minimum. I thought about using Fibonacci-Heaps, but I have been told that they are theoretically nice, but suffer from high constants and are pretty complicated to implement. And since insert is in O(log(n)) the runtime increase is nearly constant with large n. So I think its okay to stick to the set. To improve performance I tried to express it in different shapes: return l._cost < r._cost || r._cost > l._cost || l._id < r._id; return l._cost < r._cost || (l._cost == r._cost && l._id < r._id); Even this: typedef union { float _f; int _i; } flint; //... flint diff; diff._f = (l._cost - r._cost); return (diff._i && diff._i >> 31) || l._id < r._id; But the compiler seems to be smart enough already, because I haven't been able to improve the runtime. • JavaScript doesn't parse when mod-rewrited through a PHP file?

However I'm wanting to shorten the path to the JavaScript file (aswell as do some caching) which is why I'm rewriting all JavaScript files via .htaccess to cache.php (which handles the caching). If I access the rewrited file- http://localhost/js/functions.js directly it prints the JavaScript code, as any JavaScript file would - so I'm confused as to what I'm doing wrong... Assuming that there are a number of these files included on a page, what has access to what and what is the best way to pass data between the files? For example, I assume that MethodMan() can be accessed by anything on any included page. It is public, yes? var someVar1 is only accessible to the methods inside that particular anonymous function and nowhere else, yes? Also true of var APrivateMethod(), yes? What if I want APrivateMethod() to make something available to some other method in a different anonymous wrapped method in a different included page. What's the best way to pass data between these private, anonymous functions on different included pages? Do I simply have to make whatever I want to use between them public? How about if I want to minimize global variables? What about the following: var PootyTang = function(){ someVar1 = $('#someid').text(); //some stuff }; and in another included file used by that same page I have: var TangyPoot = function(){ someVar1 = $('#someid').text(); //some completely different stuff }; What's the best way to share the value of someVar1 across these anonymous (they are wrapped as the first example) functions?

• How to alter Postgres table data based on its contents?

  This is probably a super simple question, but I'm struggling to come up with the right keywords to find it on Google. I have a Postgres table that has among its contents a column of type text named content_type. That stores what type of entry is stored in that row. There are only about 5 different types, and I decided I want to change one of them to display as something else in my application (I had been directly displaying these). It struck me that it's funny that my view is being dictated by my database model, and I decided I would convert the types being stored in my database as strings into integers, and enumerate the possible types in my application with constants that convert them into their display names. That way, if I ever got the urge to change any category names again, I could just change it with one alteration of a constant. I also have the hunch that storing integers might be somewhat more efficient than storing text in the database. First, a quick threshold question of, is this a good idea? Any feedback or anything I missed? Second, and my main question, what's the Postgres command I could enter to make an alteration like this? I'm thinking I could start by renaming the old content_type column to old_content_type and then creating a new integer column content_type. However, what command would look at a row's old_content_type and fill in the new content_type column based off of that?

  Hi, I'm working on a pair comparison site where a user loads a list of films and grades from another site. My site then picks two random movies and matches them against each other, the user selects the better of the two and a new pair is loaded. This gives a complete list of movies ordered by whichever is best. The database contains three tables; fm_film_data - this contains all imported movies fm_film_data(id int(11), imdb_id varchar(10), tmdb_id varchar(10), title varchar(255), original_title varchar(255), year year(4), director text, description text, poster_url varchar(255)) fm_films - this contains all information related to a user, what movies the user has seen, what grades the user has given, as well as information about each film's wins/losses for that user. fm_films(id int(11), user_id int(11), film_id int(11), grade int(11), wins int(11), losses int(11)) fm_log - this contains records of every duel that has occurred. fm_log(id int(11), user_id int(11), winner int(11), loser int(11)) To pick a pair to show the user, I've created a mySQL query that checks the log and picks a pair at random. SELECT pair.id1, pair.id2 FROM (SELECT part1.id AS id1, part2.id AS id2 FROM fm_films AS part1, fm_films AS part2 WHERE part1.id <> part2.id AND part1.user_id = [!!USERID!!] AND part2.user_id = [!!USERID!!]) AS pair LEFT JOIN (SELECT winner AS id1, loser AS id2 FROM fm_log WHERE fm_log.user_id = [!!USERID!!] UNION SELECT loser AS id1, winner AS id2 FROM fm_log WHERE fm_log.user_id = [!!USERID!!]) AS log ON pair.id1 = log.id1 AND pair.id2 = log.id2 WHERE log.id1 IS NULL ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1 This query takes some time to load, about 6 seconds in our tests with two users with about 800 grades each. • jQuery animation loop not working

  Hi, I'm trying to create a looping animation that starts on onmousedown and stops on onmouseout. The effect is a simple scroll that will continue looping until you release the mouse. I've created a function which performs the .animate method and it passes itself as a callback but the code only runs once. • CSS3 Border Radius property doesn't work in localhost?

  I'm having a very strange problem with css3 border radius property. My following CSS and html works fine with IE9 if i double click the file and open with the IE9 , however if the border property does not work in IE if i open the file through LOCALHOST (xampp insatlled on windows 7). The same file works fine on localhost with other browsers. • find on page neighbouring siblings jquery?

  ok i've been searching for an answer to this (if there even is one) with no luck i have a succession of div elements as shown in the pic bellow: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/DrAcOliCh_2006/untitled-1.jpg?t=1300520458 the blue background is the absolute parent of the orange divs which are also siblings the DOM is not quite organized according to how the orange elements appear on the page because they are all draggable (i used jquery UI) and i moved them around inside the parent, yet, as some know, the DOM doesn't get reorganized when i move draggable elements around, so basically the siblings structure remains the same inside the DOM what i kinda need (again if that is even possible) is to determine the immediate on page neighbouring siblings of eachother; in other words, say we take that "FlashBanner" element which, on page, has the "Logo", the "Search" and the "ShoppingBasket" elements as immediate top siblings and the "Categories" and "Content" elements as immediate bottom siblings (and no left or right siblings) i have a manual solution to this, that is to pre-specify the on page neighbouring siblings for each element through a series of form fields and stuff (another story and another wall of text to explain), but that is not important atm as i want to know if it can be done automatically (i.e tell jquery to find them for me) appreciate any help, even an "it can't be done automatically", and thank you for your time hope this doesn't sound to ambiguous (or silly for that matter) and why i need to do that don't ask :P wall of text to explain cheers :)

• JavaScript functions in footer

  I'm currently using html5 boilerplate, which puts jQuery and your plugins into the footer. The only problem is, I use the same footer.php file in every page. How do I go about including page specific functions if the plugins aren't loaded yet?   We need to switch users without logging off so we can remotely administrate a PC running with a limited user that will disconnect from the VPN if the user logs off. Because we block CTRL-ALT-DEL the PC effectively hangs until it is powered off. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening so we can change users without the PC hanging when they log off?

• Handling very large lists of objects without paging?

  Hi, I have a class which can contain many small elements in a list. Looks like: public class Farm { private ArrayList<Horse> mHorses; } just wondering what will happen if the mHorses array grew to something crazy like 15,000 elements. I'm assuming that trying to write and read this from the datastore would be crazy, because I'd get killed on the serialization process. It's important that I can get the entire array in one shot without paging, and each Horse element may only have two string properties in it, so they are pretty lightweight: public class Horse { private String mId; private String mName; } I don't need these horses indexed at all. Does it sound reasonable to just store the mHorse array as a raw Text field, and force my clients to do the deserialization? Something like: public class Farm { private Text mHorsesSerialized; } then whenever the client receives a Farm instance, it has to take the raw string of horses, and split it in order to reinstantiate the list, something like: // GWT client perhaps Farm farm = rpcCall.getMyFarm(); String horsesSerialized = farm.getHorses(); String[] horseBlocks = horsesSerialized.split(","); for (int i = 0; i < horseBlocks.length; i++) { // .. continue deserializing the individual objects ... } yeah... so hopefully it would be quick to read a Farm instance from the datastore, and the serialization penalty is paid by the client, Thanks

• jQuery toggle pushing other elements around... bullies!!

  Ok, so in the left_col of my page, i have a list UL LI that incorporates a jQuery toggle to open a small box, which is "LoginBox". <ul> <li class="members"><a href="/members/signon.asp?userType=member">Members</a></li> <li class="employers"><a href="/employers/signon.asp?userType=employer">Employers</a></li> <li class="providers"><a href="#LoginBox" class="clicker">Providers</a></li> <div class="loginbox" id="LoginBox"> <p>Medical</p> <p>Dental</p> </div> <li class="brokers"><a href="/brokers/signon.asp?userType=broker">Brokers</a></li> </ul> when the jQuery is invoked, it pushes the elements below it down. As expected. What i dont get is that i have an H3 tag below this UL LI which has a background image. The text portion of the H3 gets pushed down, but the background image seems to stay put, and the UL LI that gets pushed down just covers up the background image of the H3. why would the text move, but not the background image itself? here is the H3 style: .sectionmenu h3{ background: url(/_images/h3-triangle.gif) left center no-repeat; color: #000; font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold; padding: 4px 0px 4px 10px; margin: 0; border-bottom:1px dotted #aeaeae;; } and the login box style: .loginbox{ display:none; width:100px; height:50px; margin:0 0 0 77px; }

• Windows 7 taskbar icon grouping with multiple similar windows

  When I have a number of similar windows opens, for example, multiple explorer windows, they are all grouped into the same icon on the taskbar. When I hover over this I get a thumbnail of the window, and a piece of truncated text which is supposed to help me work out what that window is. However I also like to have the full path shown in explorer windows, so the truncated text is usually C:\CommonPathToEveryWind... I have noticed that if I have over 14 explorer windows open, then Windows gives up trying to display these useless thumbnails, and instead gives me a nicely formatted list of paths. My question is how can I customise this behaviour, to either disable thumbnails all together for a subset of applications where a thumbnail is inappropriate (explorer, 'Everything'); or to lower the max number of thumbnails per grouped taskbar icon to 2; or just to disable thumbnails all together, (without loosing the entire windows theme) Edit: Just to make it clear what I currently get, and what I actually want. I do still want to keep the grouping behaviour, so that multiple instances of the same program, Explorer for example, only take one slot on the taskbar. • ASP ListView - Eval() as formatted number, Bind() as unformatted?

  I have an ASP ListView, and have a very simple requirement to display numbers as formatted w/ a comma (12,123), while they need to bind to the database without formatting (12123). I am using a standard setup - ListView with a datasource attached, using Bind(). I converted from some older code, so I'm not using ASP.NET controls, just form inputs...but I don't think it matters for this: <asp:SqlDataSource ID="MySqlDataSource" runat="server" ConnectionString='<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString1 %>' SelectCommand="SELECT NUMSTR FROM MY_TABLE WHERE ID = @ID" UpdateCommand= "UPDATE MY_TABLE SET NUMSTR = @NUMSTR WHERE ID = @ID"> </asp:SqlDataSource> <asp:ListView ID="MyListView" runat="server" DataSourceID="MySqlDataSource"> <LayoutTemplate> <div id="itemplaceholder" runat="server"></div> </LayoutTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <input type="text" name="NUMSTR" ID="NUMSTR" runat="server" value='<%#Bind("NUMSTR")%>' /> <asp:Button ID="UpdateButton" runat="server" Text="Update" Commandname="Update" /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:ListView> In the example above, NUMSTR is a number, but stored as a string in a SqlServer 2008 database. I'm also using the ItemTemplate as read and edit templates, to save on duplicate HTML. In the example, I only get the unformatted number. If I convert the field to an integer (via the SELECT) and use a format string like Bind("NUMSTR", "{0:###,###}"), it writes the formatted number to the database, and then fails when it tries to read it again (can't convert with the comma in there). Is there any elegant/simple solution to this? It's so easy to get the two-way binding going, and I would think there has to be a way to easily format things as well... Oh, and I'm trying to avoid the standard ItemTemplate and EditItemTemplate approach, just for sheer amount of markup required for that. Thanks!

• Winforms App Not Displaying Graphical Elements in Design Mode

  I wrote a bunch of code in the .cs file in c# for a winforms application. The application runs fine, and everything is in it's place. Something like this: using.. namespace Temp { public class Temp : Form { Button b1; TextBox t1; Temp() { b1.Text = "Some Text"; b1.Size = new Size(50,20); ... } void function1() { // stuff } static void Main() { Application.Run(new Temp()); } } } How can I modify my code (or fix it somehow) so that the design view displays the elements in their correct positions and view so that I can visually edit them instead of having to trial/error everything. Edit for Clarification My application runs fine. The problem is, that I didn't use designer to create the application and so in the designer view, the app is empty. But not empty when I run it, since everything is positioned programmatically in the .cs file. My question is, how can I fix this, so that the designer shows the objects correctly. There is no quick fix other than to redesign everything?

  I have a JavaScript file which is loaded up at the end of my HTML page. Rather than adding the script code for asynchronous tracking for Google in yet another script I would rather combine the two scripts together. • Storing values in the DataValueField and DataTextField of a dropdownlist using a linq query

  I have a website for dance academy where Users can register and add/drop dance classes. In the web page to drop a particular dance, for a particular user, the dropdown displays her registered dances. Now I want to delete one of the dances from the list. So I'll remove the row from the table and also from the dropdownlist. The problem is that everytime the item with the lowest ID (index) is getting deleted, no matter which one the user selects. I think I am storing the DataTextField and DataValueField for the dropdown incorrectly. I want this to hold the id of the dance selected by the user.
