  Hi, I am planning to make some big project (1 000 000 users, approximately 500 request pre second - in hot time). For performance I'm going to use no relational dbms (each request could cost lot of instructions in relational dbms like mysql) - so i can't use DAL. My question is: how web2py is working with a big traffic, is it work concurrently? I'm consider to use web2py or Gork - Zope, How is working zodb(Z Object Database) with a lot of data? Is there some comparison with object-relational postgresql? Could you advice me please.

• Device driver with generic communication media layer

  Greetings all, I'm trying to implement driver for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our head office. Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? • Neural Network Output Grouping 0.5?

  I tried to write a Neural Network system, but even running through simple AND/OR/NOR type problems, the outputs seem to group around 0.5 (for a bias of -1) and 0.7 (for a bias of 1). It doesn't look exactly "wrong"... The 1,1 in the AND pattern does seem higher than the rest and the 0,0 in the OR looks lower, but they are still all grouped so it's debatable. I was wondering a) if there's some obvious mistake I've made or b) if there's any advice for debugging Neural Nets... seeing as you can't always track back exactly where an answer came from... • Java interface to Windows communications? (OLE, OPC, DDE)

  I need to integrate an off-the-shelf Windows application with a Java application. At a few key points, I need the Windows application to send an "event" and some data to the Java application. The Windows application anticipated this need, and can be configured to "Poke a DDE Item", "Set an OLE Auto-Property" or "Write an OPC Item". I'm already using JACOB to call COM methods and set COM properties on a COM object. However, I'm guessing that's pretty unrelated to these "event" notification capabilities. Anyone have any experience calling FROM a Windows application to a "DDE Item", "OLE Auto-Property" or "OPC Item" that's actually in a JVM? Any pointers, advice, etc, would be appreciated.

• Additional spaces in String having read text file to String using FileInputStream

  Hi, I'm trying to read in a text file to a String variable. The text file has multiple lines. Having printed the String to test the "read-in" code, there is an additional space between every character. As I am using the String to generate character bigrams, the spaces are making the sample text useless. • How to Set Timeout for Ruby ODBC Driver for SQL Server?

  Hello, I would like to know how to explicitly set a timeout for the Ruby DBI ODBC driver, when connecting to SQL Server. I would like long running queries to simply timeout and cancel themselves, saving further server resources and Rails processes. This was happening while we were using the ADO based Ruby driver, but now that we've switched to DBD::ODBC we are no longer experiencing timeouts. I've looked around but cannot find out how to set the query timeout value. I've tried explicitly setting some values in the driver, and specifying both Timeout and ConnectionTimeout and Connect Timeout in the DSN configuration for the connection. No luck. Your tips and advice are very appreciated. Thanks! Seth

• Visual C# 2008 Express connection to SQL Server 2008 Express problem

  Hi guys, I have a problem with Visual C# 2008 express (SP1) connecting to SQL Server 2008 express. The "Add Connection" window (wherever initiated) doesn't list existing sql server and no option for sql server except a compact edition. Note that, I've got the VWD 2008 express (SP1) on the same machine which shows the window regularly (with SQL server listed) and SQL Server Management studio works fine with the server as well. I've seen other similar posts, did take some advices: reinstalled the VC#, services run ok, etc... but with no success with VC# so far. Again, on the same machine the VWD shows the dialog with sql server option regularly, but VC# shows only 3 options in "Change data source" dialog (1. Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB) 2. Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5, 3. Microsoft SQL Server Database File) Any idea? Thanks in advice, Phil

• Entity Framework - Medium Trust

  I'm trying to get the entity framework working in medium trust. I've tried splitting the files and using a separate assembly but I seem to have one problem after another. I moved the EDMX to a separate assembly, which causes a single .dll to be outpit to the sites /Bin directory. I'm referencing this as below from web.config. Whenever I try to access one of the entity classes, I get an ArgumentException: 'An item with the same key has already been added.' It's critical this works with medium trust, but I seem to be running out of options. Any advice greatly appreciated.

• Git checking out problem [fatal: early EOFs]

  Dear all, I'm running a Ubuntu (9.10) server with Git (latest from Ubuntu package manager) installed. Access to the Git is via SSH. On windows machines, I'm using Cygwin to push/pull code. I can push my project code onto the server but when I do a clone or pull, it returns a [fatal: early EOFs] error at about 75-80%. Upon further investigation, it seems like textual data has no issue when pulled/cloned but when the jar files and images are pulled from Git, the error will occur. Any suggestion/advice that can help to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.

• Silverlight Navigation using Mvvm-light(oobe)+MEF?

  What is the best approach for navigating between UserControls/Pages(out of browser experience)? I'm fairly new to Silverlight and even newer to the mvvm pattern. How well does the Navigation Framework Integrate with the MVVM Light Toolkit? A snippet for general application flow control with the two would be great. The plan was to use the Navigation Framework for general flow or using Jeremy Likeness's approach to region management(http://csharperimage.jeremylikness.com/search/label/regions) and swapping out regions as needed. I've seen a few places mention replacing the Visual Root, but that sounded like a hack to me. Any advice, snippets, or a nudge in the general direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• SQL Server: Profiling statements inside a User-Defined Function

  I'm trying to use SQL Server Profiler (2005) to track down some application performance problems. One of the calls being made is to a table-valued user-defined function. This function wraps a select that joins several tables together. In SQL Server Profiler, the call to the UDF is logged. However, the select that underlies the UDF isn't being logged at all. Because of this, I'm not getting useful data on which tables & indexes are being hit. I'd like to feed this info into the Database Tuning Advisor for some indexing advice. Is there any way (short of unwrapping the queries themselves) to log the tables called by UDFs in Profiler?

• glPushName + glPopName stack overflow and underflow

  Can anybody please explain me how to use glPushName and glPopName. I like to use them instead of glLoadName, but I laways get GL_STACK_OVERFLOW and GL_STACK_UNDERFLOW errors. (First, under then overflow). Example code would help me too. Thanks for any advice. Note #1: My Rendering/selection_rednering code consists of multiple glBegin(...)/glEnd() blocks, if this is any problem plus various Rotations and Transformations. Note #2: I know that GL selection / picking is deprecated, but I have to implement it within a Application which was developed a with OpenGL2.1 a while ago.

  Hello all, I have come across this great function/command. Colour to RGB, you can do this: col2rgb("peachpuff") //returns hex It will return one hex value. I want to extend this using Perl, Python or PHP but I want to be able to pass in, for example, "yellow" and the function returns all types of yellows - their hex/rgb/?/etc value. I already have a quick solution implemented, which involves mapping colour names to hex values but now I want to get more precise and use some formulas etc to determine what's what. However, as usual, I don't have a clue on how to do this! So I appreciate any implementation advice on how to do this. Thanks all

• CakePHP: shortcomings with indirectly associated models

  I'm having some issues with dealing with indirectly associated models in cakephp. My current model setup is as follows: Deliveries hasOne License License belongsTo Delivery License hasAndBelongsToMany Product (and vice-versa) License hasAndBelongsToMany ProductOption (and vice-versa) I'm trying to save information about ALL of these models inside ONE form. The shortcomings I'm running into are the following: The form helper only seems able to see the field type one level deep. saveAll() only seems able to save records one level deep (for multiple model forms). I'm searching everywhere for the solutions to these issues, but since I'm new to CakePHP, I'm not sure what the newest methods or "correct" methods are for dealing with these issues. • How to refactor large projects in visual studio

  I always run into a problem where my projects in Visual Studio (2008) become huge monstrosities and everything is generally thrown into a Web Application project. I know from checking out some open source stuff that they tend to have multiple projects within a solution, each with their own responsibilities. Does anyone have any advice for how to refactor this out? What should be in a separate project vs. part of the web project? Can you point me to any reference materials on the subject, or is it just something you become accustomed to with time?

• Visualizing Undirected Graph That's Too Large for GraphViz?

  Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for rendering an undirected graph with 178,000 nodes and 500,000 edges. I've tried Neato, Tulip, and Cytoscape. Neato doesn't even come remotely close, and Tulip and Cytoscape claim they can handle it but don't seem to be able to. (Tulip does nothing and Cytoscape claims to be working, and then just stops.) Does anyone have any ideas? I'd just like a vector format file (ps or pdf) with a remotely reasonable layout of the nodes. Thanks!

  Hi all, I've written a ASP.NET app that I hope to sell to businesses, I could host the trial but it's designed to connect to the customers data so customers will certainly want to install it to do a successful evaluation. I've never produced anything commercial before so I'm looking for advice on how best to limit the trial, a 30 day trial seems most common, do you simply rely on the clock of the PC/Server they install it on? • Bulk email notifications API for social networking site

  I'm looking to build a social networking site that notifies followers of a particular user when new content has been posted by that user. Since the hope is that the site will eventually have thousands of users with thousands of followers, I'd prefer to use an outside product/service to send the emails rather than building the functionality into the application and dealing with scalability issues. I've looked at MailChimp and a few others out there. Since my use case isn't really email campaigns, these providers don't seem like the right solution. In fact, MailChimp support confirmed for me that my scenario doesn't fit for them. I'm sure others have run into this same requirement. What are others out there using? I'm using .NET so would like to target something that has a .NET wrapper if possible. Any advice would be most appreciated!

Ultimately the service delivers an array of operations that each client can perform based on their selected role. I've opened a new Silverlight Business Application and tried to understand how authentication/authorization works in this template, as well as scoured the web to find examples to how to hook my webservice to the login box already created in the template, but I am completely at a loss as how to do this! Can anyone offer any advice?

  Is there anyway from a C prog to find whether the OS is currently running in 32bit or 64bit mode. I am using a simple program as below int main(void){ switch(sizeof(void*)){ case 4: printf("32\n"); break; case 8: printf("64\n"); break; } } Is this a correct approach ? Would this code work in all the scenarios like, If the hardware is 64bit and the OS is 32bit what would it return ? I don't have machine to test this in diff configurations. Thanks for the advice.

  Hello all, I've got a chunk of code that's passing an NSMutableDictionary (amongst other things) to a method in another class: [self.shuttle makeAPICallAndReturnResultsUsingMode:@"login" module:@"login" query:credentials]; The NSMutableArray credentials is previously defined like this: NSMutableDictionary *credentials = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init]; [credentials setObject:username forKey:@"username"]; [credentials setObject:password forKey:@"password"]; The method that receives it looks like this: -(id)makeAPICallAndReturnResultsUsingMode:(NSString *)mode module:(NSString *)module query:(NSMutableDictionary *)query The code works fine up until this point within the above method: [query setObject:self.sessionID forKey:@"session_id"]; At this point, the application terminates -- the console informs me of this exception: * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '* -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: method sent to an uninitialized mutable dictionary object' This leads me to believe that I must initialize NSMutableDictionary in some way in my new method before I can access it, but I have no idea how. Any advice?
