• Restful authentication between two GAE apps.

  Hello everyone, i am trying to write a restful google app engine application (python) that accepts requests only from another GAE that i wrote. I dont like any of the ways that i thought of to get this done, please advice if you know of something better than: Get SSL setup, and simply add the credentials on the request that my consuming app will send. I dont like it cause SSL will slow things down. Security by obsecurity. Add a random number in my request that is in Xmod0, where X is a secret number that both applications know. I just,,,, dont like this. Check the HTTP header to see where is the request coming from. This option is the one that i hate the least, not alot of processing, and spoofing an HTTP request is not really worth it, for my application's data. Is there any other clean solution for this?

• Unable to login magento administration

  Hi Everybody, I have just installed Magento on Windows using WAMP. Installation was successfull without any errors or warnings. When i browse administration page, i can see login screen. After entering the correct credentials it is not displaying me the Dashboard/Control Panel. Its displaying the same login page. If i enter wrong credentials, its authenticating and displaying a message as "invalid username or password" I am unable to determine the issue. If anybody has been through this issue and solved it please help me. How can i login Magento administration. Note: While installation i have selected session=Database. Will that be a issue? • Scipy sparse... arrays?

  Hey, folks. So, I'm doing some Kmeans classification using numpy arrays that are quite sparse-- lots and lots of zeroes. I figured that I'd use scipy's 'sparse' package to reduce the storage overhead, but I'm a little confused about how to create arrays, not matrices. I've gone through this tutorial on how to create sparse matrices: http://www.scipy.org/SciPy_Tutorial#head-c60163f2fd2bab79edd94be43682414f18b90df7 To mimic an array, I just create a 1xN matrix, but as you may guess, Asp.dot(Bsp) doesn't quite work because you can't multiply two 1xN matrices. I'd have to transpose each array to Nx1, and that's pretty lame, since I'd be doing it for every dot-product calculation. Next up, I tried to create an NxN matrix where column 1 == row 1 (such that you can multiply two matrices and just take the top-left corner as the dot product), but that turned out to be really inefficient. I'd love to use scipy's sparse package as a magic replacement for numpy's array(), but as yet, I'm not really sure what to do. Any advice? Thank you very much!

• How to limit / throttle bandwidth with *multiple* connections

  I'm writing an app in C# that downloads concurrently (in different threads) using multiple connections to multiple servers, and I'd like to be able to limit the used bandwidth. For a single connection the solution would be simple; I'd use the solution posted here : http://www.codeproject.com/KB/IP/Bandwidth_throttling.aspx which calculates a sleep-time for the single connection. I'd like to know what the best way is to do this for multiple connections. Using the ThrottledStream posted above and dividing the bandwidth (say 2MB/sec) evenly among the connections isn't right, if I'd have 3 very slow connections and 1 very fast one they'd all be capped to 512kb/sec, so the fast one won't go above 512kb/sec and the other 3 wouldn't even make that. The preferred solution I think is to cap only the fastest connection(s) so the slower connections are used optimally. Does anyone have any experience with this, example code or any advice ?

  Some advice needed on how I can structure my models for my site. I have seen this post from Django project but still a little lost. Also come across Django-MPTT - but that's no help and possibly overkill. I'm looking to have categories & subcategories that are shown in the URLs like this: mysite.com/Level1/Maths/Calculations/Addition/ mysite.com/Level3/English/ mysite.com/Level2/English/Storytelling/ In my admin interface I'm looking to have drop downs for each level of category or subcategory. Also at each level I will be querying items (another model) like get all items that have the category 'Level1' AND 'Maths'. There could also be a situation where I have five or more subcategories. How is it best to create my models for best performance? It it worth using tagging instead?

• Compiling python modules whith DEBUG defined on MSVC

  Python rather stupidly has a pragma directive in its include files that forces a link against python26_d.lib when the DEBUG preprocessor variable is defined. This is a problem because the python installer doesn't come with python26_d.lib! So I can't build applications in msvc in debug mode. If i temporarily #undef DEBUG for just one file I get many complaints about inconsistent DLL linkage. If I change the pragma in pythons include file I get undefined references to various debug functions. I have tried compiling my own version of python but its somehow different enough from the python that gets distributed that I can't use my modules with apps built with the vanilla version of python Can anyone give me any advice on how to get round this?   Hi, I have a program that is compressing a string in an unknown way. I know a few inputs and the output produced, but I am not sure what is being used to compress the string. Here are my examples.   Hello, I would like to create a drawable in XML that should include: image drawable color drawable The color drawable provides white transparent color. So, as a result we would have image with some white transparent layer on top. • Can squid forward DNS queries to a DNS server?

  This might something be completely impossible to achieve, but before I give it a shot thought I might get some advice from a fellow geek. Would squid proxy DNS queries as well? I would like to forward DNS queries to go through squid and use squid's DNS error page, of course by customizing it. I see the DNS queries are hitting my squid box on UDP port 53. I can setup a port forwarding so that all these queries get sent to squid's port 3128. But would squid understand its a DNS query and forward those queries to the dns server set in squid.conf? I hope my question is clear but please shout up and I would be glad to give you some more info if needed. Thanks guys!

• Why does Google's closure library not use real private members?

  I've been a JavaScript developer for a while now, and I've always thought that the correct way to implement private members in JavaScript is to use the technique outlined by Doug Crockford here: http://javascript.crockford.com/private.html. I didn't think this was a particularly controversial piece of JavaScript wisdom, until I started using the Google Closure library. Imagine my surprise... the library makes no effort to use Crockford-style information hiding. All they do is use a special naming convention and note "private" members in the documentation. I'm in the habit of assuming that the guys at Google are usually on the leading edge of software quality, so what gives? Is there some downside to following Mr. Crockford's advice that's not obvious?

  I'm writing a fairly big interface using Silverlight. As I progress, the xaml file is getting fairly big and is becoming proportionally uglier. Questions Are there any resources out there to make the xaml more readable? For example, how would I display the order of attributes (e.g. height and Width first) so that it looks the most tidy? Another issue is that there are multiple ways to implement an interface with grids and stack panels. Is there a preferred approach when using one or the other? I am looking for advice and links to other resources that can be used as examples.

• Parse M3U file locations to fully qualified paths

  I would like to parse the file location information in an M3U playlist into fully qualified paths. The possible formats in M3U files seem to be: c:\mydir\songs\tune.mp3 \songs\tune.mp3 ..\songs\tune.mp3 For the first example, just leave it alone. For the second add the directory that the playlist resides in so it would become c:\playlists\songs\tune.mp3 and the same for the third case so it would also become: c:\playlists\songs\tune.mp3. I'm using vb under VS2008 and I can't find a way to recognise each of the potential location formats in the M3U file. System.IO.Path offers no solution that I can find. I've searched extensively for terms like "convert relative path to absolute" but no luck. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

• When using a package or framework is there a standard way to use version control?

  i.e. Do you put the whole package under VCS or just the components you are programming? Packages by there nature will get upgraded and that code will need to be added into the VCS, plus there is a lot of code that is static. Specifically I am going to be working on Joomla, adding and building modules, customising modules and the look and feel. Initially this will be just me but will expand to possibly two more developers as the project ramps up. My reaction would be just to VCS the lot, it means that i know it is all there and deployment via CI is easier(?). The alternative is to exclude the bulk of the code that is not being altered which could be error prone and laborious. As there is not a specific answer for this and i am looking for either experience or best practice advice i have marked it community wiki.

• What should I learn after HTML and CSS?

  I am 5 days into learning how to make my website, flying through my HTML & CSS book and having fun. I’m starting to consider what to order next. I’m not sure what to study next, so please give me some advice if you can. My end goal is to create a site that has a lot of the functionality that www.edufire.com and similar sites have, just for example. I think I’m learning well with the Head First Series, and the style will probably serve me well as an intro to programming. However, I don't think the books dive too deeply into any 1 subject. I could order: A: Head First Programming: A Learner’s Guide to Programming Using the Python Language B: Head First Javascript C: Head First PHP & MySQL D: a different programming book or E: another CSS or design book to solidify my basic HTML & CSS skills Any guidance would be appreciated. • Converting a large SQL Server Database to Azure Storage

  Hi guys, I have a very large database structure, (Data is not important at this point, I can migrate the info in the db pretty easily if the structure is done) , all reside in SQL Server and I even published it to SQL Azure, but thinking about the limitation of SQL Azure in size, made me decide to switch most of the tables that do not need all the bells and whistles of SQL Azure to Azure Table and blob storage. I was thinking of creating a TT template that dose that, but was wondering if their is a tool that do that. Any ideas or thoughts. The only tables that i would keep in SQL Azure would anything related to transactions like payments. Appreciate your thoughts and advice

• Sharepoint and SQL server Endpoint

  I created a LinkedServer on MS SQL Server 2005 pointing to my Active Directory. Nothing too fancy. Simple LinkedServer with ReadOnlyAdmin Account assigned to CONNECTAS Property. Then I created some storedprocedures to retreive some data from the LinkedServer. Again nothing too fancy. Just a few simple LDAP Queries. Then I created a SQL Endpoint to expose these stored procedures as Web services. Using Visual Studio 2008, everything is fine and dandy. It finds the endpoint, gets the list of the methods available and runs smoothly. Cool. But the Sharpeoint Add Web Service somehow doesn't work! It finds the WSDL file no prob. Retrieves the list of functions and parameterss n all but just simply doesn't run them! Any advice or where I should start checking?

  Hi all I ran into a problem in using svn and buildix. I have a project created in svn as well as in cruise control which was working fine. Since yesterday whenever I commit changes into svn they are successfully commited but buildix is not able to pick up those changes, Normally I used to run 'svn update' whenever this problem occurs but now this is not helping for this project. When I try to run 'svn update', I get Skipped '.' and when I try to run 'svn cleanup', I get svn: '.' is not a working copy directory I took the advice of some one and deleted the folder .svn in my project but that did not help.   I was recently wondering how http://500px.com calculates their "Pulse" rating. The "Pulse" is a score from 1..100 based on the popularity of the photo. I think it might use some of the following criteria: Number of likes Number of "favorites" Number of comments Total views maybe the time since the photo has been uploaded maybe some other non-obvious criteria like the users follower count, user rank, camera model or similar How would I achieve some sort of algorithm like this? Any advice on how to implement an algorithm with this criteria (and maybe some code) would be appreciated too.

• How (and where) to get aligned tRNA sequences (and import it into R)

  (This is a database / R commands question) I wish (for my thesis work), to import tRNA data into R and have it aligned. My questions are: 1) What resources can I use for the data. 2) What commands might help me with the import/alignment. • How do You Get a Specific Value From a System.Data.DataTable Object?

  I'm a low-level algorithm programmer, and databases are not really my thing - so this'll be a n00b question if ever there was one. I'm running a simple SELECT query through our development team's DAO. The DAO returns a System.Data.DataTable object containing the results of the query. This is all working fine so far. The problem I have run into now: I need to pull a value out of one of the fields of the first row in the resulting DataTable - and I have no idea where to even start. Microsoft is so confusing about this! Arrrg! Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not providing any code samples, because I believe that context is unnecessary here. I'm assuming that all DataTable objects work the same way, no matter how you run your queries - and therefore any additional information would just make this more confusing for everyone.
