• Displaying objects based on if a user is logged in or not

  I'm learning about PHP sessions for user authentication on my website. I know how to restrict the viewing of a complete page using sessions (simply check if the 'uid' session variable is set and if it is, show content, if not redirect to an error). However I'm trying to figure out the best way to selectively show and hide different objects (div, text, images) based on if a user is logged in or not. Is it as simple as checking for the 'uid' session variable and displaying based on if it set or not? Is there a more efficient way of doing this id there are a lot of conditional elements on a page?

• What is the correct HTTP status code to send when a site is down for maintenance?

  Is there a HTTP status code to tell Google (and others) to go away, index me again later? Basically, one that semantically tells clients that the site is down for maintenance? The ones I have considered are 304 => Not modified 307 => Temporary redirect 410 => Gone 503 => Service Unavailable I'm leaning towards the last one, but was just curious as to which one was proper choice. Thanks Update Is this the correct way to send it with PHP? header('Status: 503 Service Unavailable');

• CodeIgniter URI segments captured as variables?

  well, i have a function within a controller called test, and i can access it by going to http://localhost/nwk/control/test this is my function. I want to use the data given in the next segment from the "test" as a php variable. so if i put function test() { $var $this->uri->segment(3); echo $var; } according to the user guide if I enter control/test/data, my variable should be equal to 'data'? doesn't seem to be working. Am I missing something here?

  Hey Recently I'm interested in post's structure of worpress . They use a table named (wp_posts) and in this table they saved 3 related fields such as : post_title post_name guid It's clear that they save title of each story in post_title field , and slugs in post_name , and full url of a post in guild filed . But where the hell, they rewrite these urls in way it appears in browsers : http://localhost/wordpress/about/ There is no htaccess rules for this ! I checked rewrite.php and didn't understand an inch ?! If you were me , and u need to create such pages , what steps you would take !?

  Given a path to a REST style URL: http://site.com/rest/customer/foo/robot/bar/1 When you GET it, it returns a PDF to the foo-customer containing page 1 of the bar-URL. While foo is the name of the customer bar is an URL. The URL usually contains slashes and might look something like this: http://anothersite.com/interestingarticle.html As REST URL's separate arguments by slashes I can't just put it into the REST URL above. Which encoding should I use? I can't use Base 64 as it utilizes the slash as well. As a technical note I will encode the URL in a .NET-application and decode it in PHP.

• SQL Query taking too long

  I am trying to optimize the SQL query listed below. It is basically a search engine code that retrieves products based on the products name. It also checks products model number and whether or not it is enabled. This executes in about 1.6 seconds when I run it directly through the phpMyAdmin tool but takes about 3 seconds in total to load in conjunction with the PHP file it is placed in. I need to add a category search functionality and now that is crashing the MySQL server, HELP! • getting rid of repeated customer id's in mysql query

  I originally started by selecting customers from a group of customers and then for each customer querying the records for the past few days and presenting them in a table row. • Large strings: Text files or SQL DB?

  I am coding a forum system using PHP. I am currently storing a threads ID, title, author, views and other attributes in an SQL database and then storing the thread body (the HTML and BBcode) in text files inside a folder named after the thread ID. In practise it's really simple to grab the database values then just grab the thread body from the text file, but I was wondering if this is the 'proper way'? I have personally no problems doing this but if it turns out it is massively inefficient and I should instead store both the thread body HTML and BBcode in the database instead then I will change. However, to me it seems wrong to store such a (very possibly) huge string of multi-line text along with lots of different characters in a database - I was taught that databases are more for short field 'values' rather than website content. I would just like a definitive answer to this because it's been bugging me for ages as to wherever I’ve been doing it properly. Does anyone know how popular forum systems store threads?

• Can someone explain Kohana 3's routing system?

  In bootstrap.php, where you set routes, I'm having a hard time getting them to work. I read some documentation a while ago that I can't seem to find again that explains them. Here is one of my examples Route::set('products', 'products/(type)', array('type' => '.+')) ->defaults(array( 'controller' => 'articles', 'action' => 'view_product', 'page' => 'shock-absorbers', )); I thought that would mean a request like products/something would load up the articles controller, and the action_view_product method. But I can't get it to work. Can someone please explain to me exactly how they work, and what all the method parameters are?

• Command Prompt closes on Windows, using Wamp Server commands

  Hey guys, I am following the tutorial on PHP with MySQL. In that tutorial ebook, they recommend us to use commands to set password for the MySQL. The command goes something like this, "mysqladmin -u root -p status" Now, I am using Windows XP and whenever I enter the command, the dos screen flashes and terminates. I am unable to note down the results, so the question: is there any way to stop command prompt from terminating on Windows machine? Looking forward to hear from you guys, thank you!

  Actually I have some download link on my website something like "http://www.example.com/somesong.mp3". Now when user click on this link they get somesong.mp3 but I want to change it before they download. I found many scripts that made it possible but didn't get exact right script. Because I want that when the user clicks on download link the file downloading should be started just after the click with the new file name as I want to use. But in all the scripts which I downloaded, first the php processing starts for a few minute (I think it depends on the file size) and then rename it. Is there a way to direct force the file in header with new file name. Thanks.

• MySQL Limiting a query to one consistent value

  My current query returns a table like: +------------+ value1 | .... value1 | .... value2 | .... value3 | .... +------------+ I want: +------------+ value1 | .... value1 | .... +------------+ I want to only receive all rows with the first value. Normally I would do a WHERE clause if I knew that value, and I cannot use a LIMIT because each value has a different number of rows. Right now My query looks like "SELECT u.*, n.something, w.* FROM ... AS u, ... AS n, ... AS w WHERE u.id = n.id AND w.val = n.val AND u.desc LIKE '%GET REQUEST VARIABLE%';" This works great, except I get way too many rows and using PHP to do this ruins code portability and is superfluous.   what i want to do is that when you vote Y or N (two different radio buttons) and then it inserts into the "vote" column(in database) = Y or N(what you pickd), if nothing then echo error. I know how to do this like halfway, i never worked with radiobuttons before so i need you guys. Here's a two radio button right: Yes: <input type="radio" value="Y" id="voteYes" name="vote"></input> <br> No: <input type="radio" value="N" id="voteNo" name="vote"> </input> I gave the value N and Y, not the same ID, but the same name. • pre tag is being formatted strangely in page

  I am outputting some code in one of my pages, using a <pre> tag. The code is being output correctly, but for some strange reason, the first line of the code is indented (i.e. shifted to the right, by quite a large amount). I am not applying any style to that element, and I checked in FF Firebug and no styling is being applied, so I have no idea why the first line is shifted by so much to the right - any ideas? the code that generates the tag looks like this: <pre> <?php echo $script_code; ?> </pre> The generated code looks like this: <iframe src="http://www.example.com"> </iframe> Any ideas what may be going wrong?

  I want to take a variable called $encoded_str and and remove cd1, CD1 and anything between the first 'l' and the last blank space. So for example "lp6 id4 STRINGcd1" would return "STRING". • Lightweight open source CMS - current situation

  Hello, It happened that I need to pick up PHP based open source CMS. I did a small research and found many candidates. CMS made simple seems to be right choice, but I am not sure what's the current state, I know it was widely used time ago. I need it to be fully compliant with web standarts, lightweight (especially interface). It needs to be as simple as possible - basically just style and page content editing (news, maybe some image gallery) is enough. Sure content and style have to be separated from each other since content will be edited by non-programmer. One of the main goals is SEO so I'd like it to have friendly URLs. I think CMSes like Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are too big for this project. Are there any recommendations ?

• Formal name of Magento’s Class Override Design Pattern?

  Magento is a newish (past 5 years) PHP based Ecommerce system with an architecture that's similar to the Java Spring framework (or so I've been told) One of the features of the Framework is certain classes are not directly instantiated. Rather than do something like $model = new Mage_Foo_Model_Name(); you pass an identifier into a static method on a global application object $model = Mage::getModel('foo/name'); and this instantiates the class for you. One of the wins with this approach is getModel checks a global configuration system for the foo/name identifier, and instantiates the class name it finds in the configuration system. This allows you to change the behavior of a Model system wide with a single configuration change. Is there a formal, Gang of Four or otherwise, name that describes this system/design pattern? The instantiation itself looks like a classic Factory pattern, but I'm specifically interested in the whole "override a class in the system via configuration" aspect. Is there a name/concept that covers this, or is it contained within the worldview of a Factory?
