• Limit the model data fields serialized by Web API based on the return type Interface

  We're updating our architecture to use a single object model for desktop, web and mobile that can be used in the MVVM pattern. I would like to be able to limit the data fields that are serialized through Web API by using interfaces on the controllers. This is required because the model objects for mobile are stored in HTML5 local storage so don't carry optional data while a thin desktop client would be able to store (and work with) more data. To achieve this a model will implement the different interfaces that define which data fields should be serialized and there will be a controller specific to the interface. The problem is that the Web API always serializes every field in the model even if it is not part of the interface being returned. How can we only serialize fields in the returned interface?

  Long story short, I have a struct (see below) that contains exactly one field: private int value; I've also implemented implicit conversion operators: public static implicit operator int(Outlet val) { return val.value; } public static implicit operator Outlet(int val) { return new Outlet(val); } I've implemented all of the following : IComparable, IComparable<Cart>, IComparable<int>, IConvertible, IEquatable<Cart>, IEquatable<int>, IFormattable I'm at a point where I really have no clue why, but whenever I serialize this object, I get no value. For instance, with XmlSerialization: <Outlet /> Also, I'm not solely concerned about XmlSerialization, I'm concerned about ALL serialization (binary for instance) How can I ensure that this serializes properly? NOTE: I did this because mapping an int,int dictionary seemed rather poorly typed to me when explicit objects with validation behavior were desired.

  My Classes are; class BaseClass { } class DerivedClass1 : BaseClass { } class GenericClass<T> { } class DerivedClass2 : BaseClass { GenericClass<DerivedClass1> subItem; } I want to access all fields of DerivedClass2 class. I use System.Reflection and FieldInfo.GetValue() method; Bu I cant get subItem field. FieldInfo.GetValue() method return type is "object". And I cant cast to GenericClass<DerivedClass1> or I cant get DerivedClass1 type. I try this with BaseClass BaseClass instance = FieldInfo.Getvalue(this) as GenericClass<BaseClass>; but instance is null. How to get instance with type or how to get only type?

• Reverting CoreData data

  I have an NSTableView which is populated via a CoreData-backed NSArrayController. Users are able to edit any field they choose within the NSTableView. When they select the rows that they have modified and press a button, the data is sent to a third-party webservice. Provided the webservice accepts the updated values, I want to commit those values to my persistent store. If, however, the webservice returns an error (or simply fails to return), I want the edited fields to revert to their original values. To complicate matters, I have a number of other editable controls, backed by CoreData, which do not need to resort to this behaviour. I believe the solution to this problem revolves around the creation of a secondary Managed Object context, which I would use only for values edited within that particularly NSTableView. But I'm confused as to how the two MOC would interact with each other. What's the best solution to this problem?

• Resizing Images with ASP.NET and saving to Database

  I need to take an uploaded image, resize it, and save it to the database. Simple enough, except I don't have access to save any temp files to the server. I'm taking the image, resizing it as a Bitmap, and need to save it to a database field as the original image type (JPG for example). How can I get the FileBytes() like this, so I can save it to the database? Before I was using ImageUpload.FileBytes() but now that I'm resizing I'm dealing with Images and Bitmaps instead of FileUploads and can't seem find anything that will give me the bytes. Thanks!

• C# property definition

  For C# properties, I can do this: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } which means that the Name property can be set within the class Employee & can be read publicly. But, if I want to restrict the set to only within the constructors of the Employee class, I need to do: public class Employee{ public readonly string Name = String.Empty; public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } But, for this case, I had to change the property to a field. Is there any reason this is not possible/allowed in C#: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private readonly set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } IMO this will allow us to have properties which can be set only in the constructor & does not require us to change properties to fields... For example, if the name was missing from the PrimaryContact instance the error would read "primary contact name is required". My current solution is to create a validation service that checks the model state for field errors then remove said errors and add them back using the specific language I'd like.

• Are there programming languages taht rely on non-latin alphabets?

  Every programming language I have ever seen has been based on the Latin alphabet, this is not surprising considering I live in Canada... But it only really makes sense that there would be programming languages based on other alphabets, or else bright computer scientists across the world would have to learn a new alphabet to go on in the field. I know for a fact that people in countries dominated by other alphabets develop languages based off the Latin alphabet (eg. Ruby from Japan), but just how common is it for programming languages to be based off of other alphabets like Arabic, or Cyrillic, or even writing systems which are not alphabetic but rather logographic in nature such as Japanese Kanji? Also are any of these languages in active widespread use, or are they mainly used as teaching tools? This is something that has bugged me since I started programming, and I have never run across someone who could think of a real answer.

  Given this field: char lookup_ext[8192] = {0}; // Gets filled later And this statement: unsigned short *slt = (unsigned short*) lookup_ext; What happens behind the scenes? lookup_ext[1669] returns 67 = 0100 0011 (C), lookup_ext[1670] returns 78 = 0100 1110 (N) and lookup_ext[1671] returns 68 = 0100 0100 (D); yet slt[1670] returns 18273 = 0100 0111 0110 0001. I'm trying to port this to C#, so besides an easy way out of this, I'm also wondering what really happens here. Been a while since I used C++ regularly. Thanks!

  I have the following (simplified) models: class Donation(models.Model): entry_date = models.DateTimeField() class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class Item(models.Model): donation = models.ForeignKey(Donation) category = models.ForeignKey(Category) I'm trying to display the total number of items, per category, grouped by the donation year. I've tried this: Donation.objects.extra(select={'year': "django_date_trunc('year', %s.entry_date)" % Donation._meta.db_table}).values('year', 'item__category__name').annotate(items=Sum('item__quantity')) But I get a Field Error on item__category__name. I've also tried: Item.objects.extra(select={"year": "django_date_trunc('year', entry_date)"}, tables=["donations_donation"]).values("year", "category__name").annotate(items=Sum("quantity")).order_by() Which generally gets me what I want, but the item quantity count is multiplied by the number of donation records. Any ideas? Basically I want to display this: 2010 - Category 1: 10 items - Category 2: 17 items 2009 - Category 1: 5 items - Category 3: 8 items

  Trying to get my project updated to MVC3, something I just can't find: I have a simple datatype of ENUMS: public enum States() { AL,AK,AZ,...WY } Which I want to use as a DropDown/SelectList in my view of a model that contains this datatype: public class FormModel() { public States State {get; set;} } Pretty straight forward: when I go to use the auto-generate view for this partial class, it ignores this type. I need a simple select list that sets the value of the enum as the selected item when I hit submit and process via my AJAX - JSON POST Method.   Hi everyone, Can anyone show me how to use jquery in an asp.net nested masterpage. I have my main masterpage where I have added the link to the jquery libaray and also the validation framework. I have then created another masterpage with some styling and created a aspx page based on that masterpage. How can I attach the validation framework to textboxes within my page?   Suppose I have the following Domain class mapping to a legacy table, utilizing read-only second-level cache, and having a transient field: class DomainObject { static def transients = ['userId'] Long id Long userId static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' table 'SOME_TABLE' } } I have a problem, references to DomainObject are being shared due to first-level caching, and thus transient fields are writing over each other. For example, def r1 = DomainObject.get(1) r1.userId = 22 def r2 = DomainObject.get(1) r2.userId = 34 assert r1.userId == 34 That is, r1 and r2 are references to the same instance. This is undesirable, I would like to cache the table data without sharing references. Any ideas? [Edit] Understanding the situation better now, I believe my question boils down to the following: Is there anyway to disable first level cache for a specific domain class while still using second level cache?

• Syntax error converting the nvarchar value to a column of data type int.

  I have 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 stored as nvarchar inside Level in my db. I then have a dropdownlist with values 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. When a user makes a selection (i.e 1) (Level.SelectedValue.ToString). This builds an sql query via a param like this: "Select things From MBA_EOI Where level = 1" When I run the select I get the following error: Syntax error converting the nvarchar value '1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9' to a column of data type int. I was under the impression that I was dealing with an Nvarchar field and the selected value as string, where does the int conversion come in? p.s I have also tried Level.SelectedItem.ToString

• bad performance from too many caught errors?

  I have a large project in C# (.NET 2.0) which contains very large chunks of code generated by SubSonic. Is a try-catch like this causing a horrible performance hit? for (int x = 0; x < identifiers.Count; x++) {decimal target = 0; try { target = Convert.ToDecimal(assets[x + identifiers.Count * 2]); // target % } catch { targetEmpty = true; }} What is happening is if the given field that is being passed in is not something that can be converted to a decimal it sets a flag which is then used further along in the record to determine something else. The problem is that the application is literally throwing 10s of thousands of exceptions as I am parsing through 30k records. The process as a whole takes almost 10 minutes for everything and my overall task is to improve that time some and this seemed like easy hanging fruit if its a bad design idea. Any thoughts would be helpful (be kind, its been a miserable day) thanks, Chris

However, I keep getting the value as 'undefined', in spite of entering text into the newly added text box. This does not happen if the form already has a text box to begin with - i.e., if a text box is not being added via a js function. Anything missing / look wrong here? Thanks!

It contains : a table view on left, menu items on top, text field on right bottom and text view at central portion on right side. Using text view I can play with string being displayed but I cannot draw the line between messages or round rectangle surrounding user name and time stamp. • I can't get mailto links to open the Mail app from Mobile Safari when using jQTouch. What could be w

  Hi all, I'm developing an iPhone web app using jQTouch, and it contains a simple mailto: link to a valid email address, which should launch the iPhone mail application when tapped—but it doesn't. If I visit a "normal" web page in Mobile Safari which contains the exact same link, and tap on it, I get the expected result: the mail app pops up with the correct email address in the To field. Here's the link HTML (with the address changed) just in case I'm going nuts and have made a stupid mistake, but it appears perfectly fine: <p><a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a></p> Has anyone come across this when using jQTouch? Or can anyone at least suggest a way that I can debug this? At the moment when I tap the non-working link it flashes red (the active link state) and absolutely nothing else happens.
